@karlkoeller Congratulations Karl.

9:11 AM
@HarishKumar Thank you very much, Harish. And thanks to all people here.

9:32 AM
@karlkoeller congrats

@DavidCarlisle Thank you very much. I've learned very much from you, so part of the badge is yours :-)

@karlkoeller Good job! A great new entry in an exclusive club!

@AdamLiter awwwww <3
@karlkoeller: Congrats! :)

9:48 AM
@egreg Thank you very much. I repeat to you what I've said to David: I've learned so many things from your answers, so part of the badge is yours, as well. :-)
@PauloCereda Thank you very much. I'm very happy to have earned the badge!

@karlkoeller Beware, David will claim the money. :)

@PauloCereda doesn't matter it all comes from your card anyway

@PauloCereda Ha ha... I will offer him a beer.

@DavidCarlisle Oh no! :) New card by the way. :)

@egreg xstring...

Q: How do I remove the number in the end of a reference?

zehHow do I remove the page number in which a reference was cited using bibtex and natbib? My references look like: Alfred Renyi. On a new axiomatic theory of probability. @HarishKumar No problem.
Wow now it puts comments
I don't understand why all their effort go to question closing related stuff, as if that's the whole issue of SE network.

@percusse Oye, you too wrote the comment! Thanks again then. :)

O
I switched over to debian on linux from windows, and the formatted LaTeX that's being rendered by math.stackexchange looks a lot different. Anyone know what this is? Does it have something to do with System Fonts?

Q: Series of Cyclotomic polynomials

EthanHow can I show that if $\Phi$ is a Cyclotomic polynomial, $$\Phi_n(x)=\prod_{1\leq k\leq n}_{(n,k)=1}(x-\zeta_n^k)$$ With $\frac{d}{dx}\Phi_n(x)=\Phi'_n(x)$ Then, $$\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{1}{n^4}\frac{\Phi'_n(e^{2\pi})}{\Phi_n(e^{2\pi})}=\frac{45\zeta(3)}{\pi^4e^{2\pi}}+\frac{7}{4\pi e^{2\pi}}$$...

\Phi_n(x)=\prod_{1\leq k\leq n}_{(n,k)=1}(x-\zeta_n^k)
the first line under
How can I show that if Φ is a Cyclotomic polynomial,

From a random picked question

@Ethan No, it doesn't.

11:12 AM
it doesnt render?

@Ethan Double subscript

It has a syntax error double subscript
Ah what @egreg said

@Ethan Use \substack:
$$
\Phi_n(x)=\prod_{\substack{1\leq k\leq n\\(n,k)=1}}(x-\zeta_n^k)
$$
@Ethan I guess MathJax has fixed the wrong idea about \sum_{x}_{y} stacking the subscripts.

@egreg yes I know but short answers highlighting the error rather than long answers puling in the whole of ctan is more my style:-)

the large sigmas and other text look different when im on windows
it doesnt look like that to you does it?

11:17 AM
@Ethan It depends on the font used for rendering

Right click and change the math renderer

here
how are you rendering yours?

html+css

i get SVG,MathML,Fast HTML,HTML-CSS
yeah thats what im using

@Ethan 2.5 beta:-)

im using html+ccs? it looks different on yours though percusse?

im gona try installing some OpenType fonts

@Ethan as far as I can see math.sx is using mathjax 2.5 beta and specifing the mathjax web (wof by default) fonts so locally installed fonts shouldn't be needed but it depends on browser support for web fonts,

@ChristianHupfer Hallo, Herr Chef!

@PauloCereda: Chef is quite misleading in German :-P It means 'jefe` ... boss too, not only maitre de la cuisine...

@ChristianHupfer Don't you go Spanish with me. :P

@PauloCereda: Porque? :-P

People think our capital is Buenos Aires and we speak Spanish. :)

12:40 PM
@PauloCereda: I thought it's Lima :-P

@ChristianHupfer porque is a Brazilian word, but it's grammatically incorrect. Since it's a question, you need to separate words, Por que? Then in an answer, I can use Porque. If you use it in the final of a question, you go with por quê and the very same applies if it acts like a noun, using porquê. :)
@Christian: what's our capital, then? :P
@ChristianHupfer oy

@PauloCereda Berlin?

@PauloCereda: Brasilia?

@DavidCarlisle Very close. :)
@ChristianHupfer Yay, congrats! :)

@PauloCereda: You're right, I've forgotten the space /sob

12:43 PM
@ChristianHupfer you should have used xspace

@ChristianHupfer :) I think Spanish might have some similar rules. :)

@PauloCereda: It's wrong in Spanish too :D :D

@PauloCereda the rule is easier in German, you just omit all spaces
2

@ChristianHupfer: the funny thing is, Spanish sounds to us like an archaic Portuguese, and the exact opposite happens to Spanish-speakers: they think Portuguese sounds like a very archaic Spanish. :)

@DavidCarlisle: .... which is accidentally written by you? ;-)

12:44 PM
@DavidCarlisle LOL

I feel insulted by an Anglo-Brazil alliance ... :-(

@DavidCarlisle: I think German hyphenation is NP-hard. :)
@ChristianHupfer The Queen!

@PauloCereda: Where, where? Do I have to stand up? :-P

@ChristianHupfer That, or if they started playing God save the Queen

Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänsmütze
@PauloCereda: I don't stand up even if the German national anthem sounds somewhere :D

@PauloCereda: I'll don't buy that arara ... it's scratched :-P

@ChristianHupfer Oh no! :)

@PauloCereda: By the way... bought a new machine ... I will install Linux this evening ... and perhaps, I'll give Fedora a try

@ChristianHupfer Yay! Nice to hear. :)

@PauloCereda: I've to download it first...

12:51 PM
@Christian: if you need some suggestions on how to setup things: github.com/cereda/f21-setup

@ChristianHupfer or even windows 10

@DavidCarlisle: This is not "How to irritate People -- the next generation...." :-P
@PauloCereda: Thanks, I made a bookmark.

@ChristianHupfer ;)
@ChristianHupfer Well I never!
I love the movies sketch from that movie. :)

@PauloCereda: I did not have seen it for almost 15 years ... should have look on Youtube perhaps, on occasion

@Christian: on a serious note: please poke me if you need any help with Fedora.
I believe they might have a KDE spin if you want to install it right away.

1:00 PM
@PauloCereda: Promised... Is it better to install it first or after another Linux (Double boot machine, plenty of disk space)?

@ChristianHupfer I usually have one distro per machine, but I believe there might be no difference. Fedora is able to find out another distro in the disk.

@PauloCereda: So there is no grub issue then?

@ChristianHupfer Hopefully not. :) Maybe @yo' knows more about it (although I think Tom isn't using F21 yet).
Oh we can also ask @michal.h21. :)

@DavidCarlisle: I think, I've got some Win 3.11 installation floppy disks left... Shall I give it a try? :D

@ChristianHupfer best version ever. do it.

1:07 PM
@DavidCarlisle: Alas, I can't ... my new machine does not have a floppy drive :((((((((((((((((((((
@PauloCereda: Downloading Fedora 21

@ChristianHupfer Yay!

@PauloCereda: I'll report to you ;-)

@PauloCereda Does he still have it?

1:26 PM
@JosephWright no long lines!

@PauloCereda: Finished downloading Fedora 21 :D

@egreg He has it! So tomorrow will be a great day. :)
@ChristianHupfer Yay!

@Johannes_B question edited 40 minutes ago

@yo' Ok, that could explain this. :-)

3:51 PM
@JosephWright know anyone who understands lccodes...

@DavidCarlisle Meaning?

@JosephWright so I'm trying to understand the diff in tl2e7
@JosephWright it's very small and if I put this at the end of fontenc.sty it goes away
\ifx\Umathchar\@undefined\else
\def\reserved@a{T1}
\ifx\encodingdefault\reserved@a
 \uccode170=138 % \l    \L
 \uccode181=149 % \k{t} \k{T}
 \uccode186=154 % \v{z} \v{Z}
 \uccode255=223 % \ss    \SS

 \lccode223=255 % \SS     \ss
 \lccode255=255 % \ss     \ss
\fi
\fi

@DavidCarlisle Sounds about right

But I was trying to understand why there are not more lccodes in particular lccode of 149 is already 181 but it's a control character in unicode so id expect it to have lccode 0 (and it does in tl2014 xelatex)

3:54 PM
@DavidCarlisle My conversion of the Unicode data still needs checking! I might have something wrong
@DavidCarlisle I was working from the Perl script, but I don't write Perl so may have messed up

@JosephWright ah. I certainly expected a lot more diffs as T1 basically fills up the C0 and C1 blocks with latin2 letters so I'd expect whole runs of characters in those ranges to change lccodes. I'll see if I can debug the output then worry about the script.

@DavidCarlisle OK
@DavidCarlisle Ah, I see what is going on

@JosephWright not sure the email exchange moved us any closer to resolution:-) so I was going to propose a rather conservative addition as above just resetting the 2e lc/uc codes if fontenc is used in xe/lua tex and ends with T1 being the default encoding

@DavidCarlisle For ltunicode I just wrote the equivalent of unicode-letters.tex, which is really meant for IniTeX
@DavidCarlisle OK
@DavidCarlisle I guess we either need a 'reset' block in ltunicode or to arrange that all of the T1-related code is skipped in ltfinal if XeTeX/LuaTeX are in use
@DavidCarlisle Will get back about Chris's queries in a bit
@DavidCarlisle Which of my two options do you prefer?

@JosephWright +latter I think, it's probably clearer if it is structured as "if classic tex T1 based codes else new UCD based codes fi

4:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle OK: I think I prefer that one too!
@DavidCarlisle I'll sort the code in a bit: have some 'real' work to get done today

@JosephWright OK no problem, be in touch later.

@DavidCarlisle Actual change quite easy: am running tests now
@DavidCarlisle I've now got a much bigger diff!

@JosephWright :-)

@PauloCereda They do. I'm using it now.

4:37 PM
@cfr Yay!
@cfr: I follow the Fedora dev list and I'm quite excited to see new KDE 5 and Gnome 3.something (the one with the new notification system) in the rawhide for F22. :)

cfr
@ChristianHupfer What's the other distro? EFI or BIOS boot?

@cfr: I am not sure at the moment ... I think EFI

cfr
@PauloCereda Don't know anything about Gnome or its notification system. I hope KDE 5 is not as unstable as KDE 4 was when I first used it!

@cfr I heard great things about KDE 5. :)
@cfr: New notification system. ^^

yo'
@ChristianHupfer I've tried to install F20+W8.1 once. I failed, and since it was a UEFI notebook, the only way how to recover was by removing the hard drive and doing something. I didn't wish to do that so I sent it back to the vendor and told them I don't want such a crappy machine. They gave me my money back (well, they don't want to have to deal with all the "openness" discussions I think so they say they "don't tolerate people re-installing system", but they do, because they have to).
For the machine I use now, I decided I better pay EUR 120 to a PC servis to set the computer up for me, and I'm happy :)
@PauloCereda reminds me of gnome3 /eek

4:42 PM
@yo' It is Gnome 3. :) But notifications were elsewhere.

yo'
@PauloCereda ah a goot hit :) I'm happy I'll (hopefully) never see that one again.

@yo' The current notification scheme is terrible. If Gnome really implements this new system, I'll fall in love.

@DavidCarlisle See mail

Is there any tool like pdfjam on Linux to split a pdf - file with A2 - papersize to A3-papersize pages such that they can be printed on A3 sheets and glued together later on (We've got no A2 printer, unfortunately :-( )

cfr
@ChristianHupfer In theory, that should be easier. In practice, it depends how well behaved the installers are. Fedora's did not used to behave well at all (as of Fedora 19) but hopefully they've improved things. Don't let the second distro's installer create a second EFI boot partition. And don't let it format the first EFI boot partition either. Also, don't let either of them make an EFI boot partition smaller than 512MB. I would tend to let Fedora handle boot because of the SE Linux complications.

@FaheemMitha well, in Gnome 2 I basically use: panels*, notification area*, sensor applets*, multiple desktops* and keyboard shortcuts. The ones marked with * are missing in G3

[But it really depends on the other distro.]

@yo' Hi :) I'm not sure... I began to change my gravatar every now and then.

@cgnieder ok :)

@yo' They are all there, but you need to find them. :) I could give you some hints if you want, there are also some extensions that might help get things the way you are used to. :)
@cfr: mom is nearby with her F21 + Cinnamon computer playing games. Yay! :)

@cfr: I think, I should unpack the machine right now :-P

cfr
4:46 PM
@PauloCereda KDE 5 does have multiple desktops, right? [Please tell me it doesn't have activities, but I suppose that's too much to hope for.]
@ChristianHupfer Generally speaking, I also prefer to unpack a machine prior to installing a boot loader. But opinions obviously differ on this question ;).
@ChristianHupfer If the machine is approved for Windows 8, you know there are complications, right?

@cfr They have multiple workspaces IIRC, and activities as well, but the got into one unified control panel. :)

@cfr: Stickler to the rules, right? I just had no time to do so... :-P

cfr
@ChristianHupfer Fedora should be fine as they paid MS for the privilege, but personally I'd disable the thing on principle.

@cfr: The machine has no OS installed so far.. I could have Windows 7 installed on demand, but I rejected that insult ;-)

@ChristianHupfer quite right. demand windows 10

5:01 PM
@DavidCarlisle Wouldn't your 'load the patterns twice' plan have the issue that the language allocation numbers would be messed up entirely?

@JosephWright s/messed up/cunningly redesigned/

@DavidCarlisle :-)

@JosephWright it would be a massive change but you could make say even numbers be 8bit patterns odd numbers be Unicode patterns and change babel to pick up the right thing

@DavidCarlisle But we don't control the language numbering!
@DavidCarlisle In any case, is this really sensible

@JosephWright no but babel has to know about the scheme in force so could in principle know about a new scheme
@JosephWright probably not

5:06 PM
@DavidCarlisle I know the LaTeX approach emphasises stability in a way some others don't, but there have to be limit!
@DavidCarlisle I'm back with my 'if you are using a Unicode engine you have to accept change' position
@DavidCarlisle My guess is the key is stability for XeTeX-specific documents with XeTeX and LuaTeX-specific documents with LuaTeX (and that is a moving target anyway)

@JosephWright considering we implement floating point rather than rely on an engine that has it I'm not sure inputting twice as many hyphenation patterns as needed so as to support multiple engines isn't clearly over the limit.

@DavidCarlisle Not quite the same, but I see your point

@JosephWright some days, the context view of just one engine seems eminently sensible

@DavidCarlisle Yes, perhaps, but not while it's a moving target and even then there are issues (my position on the font loader is I think not unique to me)
@DavidCarlisle Could all be done but I don't think gets us out of some of the open questions we have

@JosephWright sure there are issues with the engine but just having one rather than three simplifies things:-) But actually coming back to luatex since it loads the patterns dynamically it (presumably?) would be possible to use classic patterns if using T1 in that case

5:12 PM
@DavidCarlisle I think so
@DavidCarlisle wiki.contextgarden.net/Encodings_and_Regimes suggests ConTeXt MkIV manages this 'behind the scenes'

@JosephWright agreed, it's just that "latex runs on three engines, sorry they are incompatible, it's not our fault" is not the easiest sales pitch to make

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I do know that
@DavidCarlisle I suspect it's done a different way: move the slots of the font around so they match Unicode (i.e. convert everything to one encoding)
@DavidCarlisle I have some thought son this: will e-mail

:19701536: OK, I see you checked in ltfinal, I'll run build check here..
@JosephWright oh, tl2e7 shows glue differences now, as well as the bigger lccode diff?

How to handle this kind of question? Too broad? unclear? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/155283/…

@Johannes_B Voted for unclear: nobody can help without knowing what document class is being used.

@egreg just did the same. One could write up a generic answer, but that isn't really worth it.

@Johannes_B No answer can be helpful for future readers. The post should be deleted in due course.

@Johannes_B I don't know.

@Johannes_B Don't worry about that: either they get auto-zapped or they get enough views to justify hanging about

yo'
@Johannes_B I hadn't written any cheques for 26 years. Then I moved in France

@yo' One year? Three months!

yo'
@JosephWright depending on where prbbly

@yo' Yes
@yo' In the UK, banks don't generally feel they have to honour them after three months
@DavidCarlisle Didn't check the full details

yo'
@JosephWright well, 3 months make much more sense to me. Because this way, I can't really cancel my account if there are pending cheques

6:02 PM
@yo' No? In the UK you can, you'd just have to stop the cheques

yo'
@JosephWright well, you can, but it's you who gets into a complicated situation is someone claims the cheque afterwards

6:16 PM
@PauloCereda: First light with my new machine, OpenSuSE 13.2 so far, almost out of the box, apart from some network problems.

@JosephWright sfcode999 v sfcode1000

@ChristianHupfer Cool. :)
Ordered my new passport. :) Who knows what can happen this year. :)

@PauloCereda: SSD is really fast :D
@PauloCereda: Do you plan to travel?

@ChristianHupfer Ja. :)

yo'
going to a concert, see you later, pals! Something for @egreg: Mahler, Martinů, Brahms :)

6:21 PM
installing graphic drivers... and then ... TeXLive ;-)
@yo': See you: Have fun!!!

@yo' See ya, Tom! Have fun!
@ChristianHupfer SuSE?!

@PauloCereda: I'll give it a try although the latest versions were a little disappointing

@ChristianHupfer Oh. :(

@PauloCereda: Fedora will follow, promised!

@yo' Enjoy. If you can. :P

6:25 PM
@egreg That's mean. :)

@PauloCereda I surely wouldn't enjoy. I'd probably be bored or laughing. Yes, a symphony by Martinů once made me laugh.

@egreg :D
@egreg: I ordered a common passport. Although I could get a nice EU one. :P

@PauloCereda Why not? Although I don't know if you can enter the Schengen area with a Brazilian passport and then using the Italian one once in. On the other hand, there are no border controls in the area.

@DavidCarlisle Ah

@egreg It takes a lifetime for asking one, and I need to have one as quickly as I can (there's an interesting paper on hold for now, so let's see how it goes in the end). I might ask one in the end of the year.

6:40 PM
@JosephWright so with latin2 using T1 encoding you get by default different inter-word space, incorrect upper/lower case and incorrect hyphenation. In some ways things were better beforfe you fixed it with a "creative merger" of T1 and Unicode as most of the affected slots are control points so shouldn't be in unicode input anyway, so giving them T1 values does the right thing most of the time, but hyphenation is still messed up of course and without that I don't think it's worth doing anything

@DavidCarlisle I'm just trying to do what is already in XeLaTeX/LuaLaTeX 'in the wild'

@JosephWright I know. But what you actually did might have been better than what you intended to do:-)

@DavidCarlisle I suspect the format-builders will want no change so if we do half a job they'll still do the rest anyway

@JosephWright I doubt they really thought about this, do they know that a simple "hello (eastern european) world" latex document does if processed with xelatex?

@DavidCarlisle That's true: I'm not actually sure how wrote the original XeLaTeX version of the code (Jonathan Kew wrote the XeTeX version, but that's somewhat different)
@DavidCarlisle We could ask Karl, but I think it's clear that xelatex.ini inherits the position from xetex.ini that documents processed with XeTeX should really be Unicode both in input and font terms
@DavidCarlisle Interesting point
@DavidCarlisle As you say, the hyphenation is a killer
@DavidCarlisle I think we probably do need to document that things are different here

7:09 PM
@JosephWright yes but we should probably also make fontenc as well as inputenc warn on xetex in that case, if we can't make it work, that's probably going to affect a lot of existing documents where people haven't noticed hyphenation is not working

@DavidCarlisle So basically we should require fontspec or at least load Latin Modern/Unicode encoding? (!)
@DavidCarlisle I'm not suggesting we actually do that, BTW
@DavidCarlisle Of course, does work in English

3 hours ago, by David Carlisle
@JosephWright new plan: everyone speak English.

@DavidCarlisle Indeed

8:12 PM
@yo' You seem to be the query expert. From the top of your head, do you know if we have a query that spits out tag-statistics? For example tag tikz 75 % answered, 7% closed, 1 % unanswered.

Q: On using InDesign or Scribus

portonMy book editor says that we need to professionally reflow the text with Adobe InDesign software (not just in a word processor). She asks $350 for the job, which seems like too much money. Do I assume correctly, that after me inserting non-breaking spaces where needed I can just allow the softwar...

One for us :-)

8:54 PM
@JosephWright we should offer $345.

I wish everybody would follow this advice before posting code on the internet:
as already commented, texample.net is a nice place. but do yourself (and others) a favor ... enlist the good will of someone whose expertise you trust and ask them to review your code for clarity and the absence of questionable or obsolete techniques. your skill will grow, and with good examples in front of the public, you will become recognized as a "trusted advisor". — barbara beeton Jan 14 at 21:07

@DavidCarlisle :-)
@DavidCarlisle Agree with you on Chris's mail

2 hours later…
yo'
10:39 PM
@egreg I enjoyed. Next week, it's Brahms :)
@Johannes_B The closest I can do: 360 open Qs without any answer out of 8605 open Qs in

@yo' I wonder if @egreg can resist posting an answer to 15 of them to get his gold badge?

@DavidCarlisle You're tempting me. :)

10:57 PM
@egreg you were tempted already

FWIW: The issue is not whether Windows 8 is installed but whether the machine is Windows 8 approved. If it is, 'secure boot' has to be enabled by default. However, if the option was Windows 7, you presumably have 'insecure' boot (at least by default) and don't have to worry about that can of worms.
I quite like Fedora although it would not be my first choice as a primary distro. (I kind of use it as my second distro - on my work machine, on my mother's machine, but not on *my* machine...)

11:43 PM
@cfr: I know that: I've installed Linux already on such 'secure boot' stuff about one and a half year ago. But I had to kick Windows 8 from the disk ... ;-)

@cfr What's your primary distro?
(please don't be Ubuntu please don't be Ubuntu please don't be Ubuntu please don't be Ubuntu please don't be Ubuntu please don't be Ubuntu please don't be Ubuntu)
