9:00 PM
GF says I talk about programming when I sleep :)

@Robusto You were supposed to be playing John Cage.

@JohanLarsson So you can be boring 24/7? ^)^

@JohanLarsson The dream is normal, your girlfriend is weird.

Mitch wins

I didn't know there was a contest.
Or that you were the judge.

9:01 PM
2x but now you know

Well, I choose not to compete. So there.

@Mitch Most of mine are anxiety-laden.

Jez
so who here is interested in health?

Most of life is anxiety-laden, isn't it?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I haven't seen you with elastically attached boobs yet.

9:03 PM
@Robusto I thought of the band's weight as my interest in the marriage versus the wedding (the stone).

He's into Spandex?

@Cerberus There's lots of things you haven't seen me with.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 A valid interpretation too. The best interpretation of a dream is the one you supply yourself, of course.

I knew it was coming in the dream. I don't think he said anything, just got out of his chair and down on a knee, and then handed me the ring.
For me to put it on myself.
Hmm.

@Jez I even asked GF, she is a nurse. Not sure she will join.

9:05 PM
Which reminds me: what's with the "down on one knee" thing? Why is that a thing?

@Robusto I suppose.
@Robusto More noble looking than down on both knees?

Jez
@JohanLarsson why not? have you joined, btw?

Except why do women want that kind of obeisance?

@MattЭллен So cute!! I need a pet bat. I love bats.

9:06 PM
Marriage proposals are just a way of lying with your knees, I guess.

@Jez I'll join now, prolly not gonna be active. Always hesitate to write English in public places except chats.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Do I want to see you with those "things"?

I never knelt when I proposed to my wife.

@Robusto how many times did you propose?

Jez
@JohanLarsson why? your english is fine.
i don't get why we're not top of the hot tab

9:07 PM
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Once. It was mutual. We just agreed that it would be a good idea. We'd been living together for four years by then.

@Robusto Of course you didn't, that's silly.

Jez
we've quite a few committers lately, we're hot hot HOT

@JohanLarsson There is no need to hesitate!

@Robusto we're going to rent a house together in a few months.

Especially if you write probably and going to.

9:08 PM
After you've been living together for four years you pretty much know if it's going to last. And so far it has.

@Jez link it again? I came to healthcare & fitness

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 That's a bigger step than the actual marriage, believe it or not.

@Cerberus they're just adorable :D

Quite.

Jez
@JohanLarsson url for healthcare and fitness?

9:08 PM
@MattЭллен I wonder how tame they will be as adults.

foundit now

@Robusto we've been living together in 650 square feet of space for a couple of years, minus a bunch of my stuff and my cat.

What does commit even mean?

@Jez: "are you really a doctor? :-) "

@Cerberus dunno. probably quite, at least towards their carers

9:09 PM
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Is the cat coming with?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I read through this question a few times and now I feel like I don't understand English anymore.

@Jez: absolutely.

@Robusto I hope so :\

Get it in writing.

@MattЭллен Like...lions?

Jez
9:09 PM
@JohanLarsson means you're meant to ask a few questions when it goes beta
im sure you can think of a few

@Cerberus I don't know? Who can explain your tastes

@Cerberus yeah :D but cuter and less man-eatery

@Jez - And please don't ever ask me a medical question again.

@RegDwigнt Or humanity.

Jez
@medica have i done something to offend you?

9:10 PM
@Cerberus are pregnant humans even humans?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Let's not take our chances, then.

I would ask medica, but she doesn't want to hear medical questions.

@MattЭллен I want!

@Jez am I really a doctor?

@RegDwigнt More like legos.

Jez
9:10 PM
@medica oh right. sorry. i was joking, didnt mean to touch a nerve.

@Cerberus only in America is LEGO legos.

@Jez hmm, hesitating now. Don't want to make promises I can't keep.

@Jez Your doctor prescribes you an oral antibiotic for a fungal infection, and you ask if I'm really a doctor?

@JohanLarsson it's more like ten. Not just a few. But I think it can be answers, too.

Jez
@JohanLarsson oh c'mon. it's not like there's a penalty if you dont, and you just need to ask like 5 questions over the course of a year or two

9:11 PM
@medica I can vouch for your web-side manner.

@Jez yeah, right.

@RegDwigнt I know, I needed the plural. I just say Lego: it's not an abbreviation, is it?

Jez
yipes, someone diffuse this situation! :-(

@Robusto well, apparently Jez disagrees.

@Cerberus it is. For leg godt.

9:12 PM
@medica He's wrong about a lot of stuff. Don't worry about it.

Jez
i don't think my brand of humour went down well. i'm quite deadpan, @medica

@RegDwigнt That is awful Dutch.

@Jez you started it, you diffuse it.

@medica I did not read it as if Jez was making fun of you.

@Cerberus yup, they call it "Danish".

But then I have never been offended on the internet.

@RegDwigнt There you go. Not good Dutch.

Jez
@medica ok, well i'm not really a programmer. i just pretend to be, online

@RegDwigнt cheezy Danish

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I have all six of those now.

9:13 PM
@JohanLarsson What did he say?

Sep 19 '14 at 18:51, by RegDwigнt
@Jez your complete and utter lack of humour never ceases to amaze me. Are you sure you are actually a Brit? You keep proving time and again that you're a German.
Diffusing situations as we speak.
You are welcome.

@JohanLarsson Maybe not. But I gave him my advice after a very lengthy conversation. One of those pieces of advice was to use soap. He says his doc told him not to use soap, and asks if I'm really a doctor.

30 mins ago, by Jez
are you really a doctor? :-)
+ some context

But I wasn't supposed to be in here anyway. I only came in to tell @MrShiny that he should start posting questions in English.

I think the smiley means he was just kidding.

9:14 PM
@RegDwigнt Me too, except I only have two bears and my wife has earmarked those for the kids, and I currently only have one reindeer and one snowman, and those are also earmarked for the kids.

@medica I read it as if he was just inviting you to more discussion. But I don't even know the language.

@RegDwigнt Ahh so that is really the origin of the name.

@RegDwigнt That's it. Rain on Mrs. Hiny's parade and leave.

But I am hoping to see discounted snowmen and reindeer today when I go for the monthly mini model build

1 min ago, by RegDwigнt
You are welcome.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 stop whining, you have three carrot-missile bunnies.

9:16 PM
@RegDwigнt yes, and 3 bats and 3 turkeys, the latter two being only $5 at the time.

@JohanLarsson Gracias.

@Jez So, if you want to believe a doc who prescribes erythromycin for Tinea Cruris, you just go ahead and believe her about everything else, too.

Jez
@JohanLarsson for a non-English speaker, you're using Google Translate very well

Actually I have 4 carrot-missile bunnies, but one is unopened

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 see, 10 Eurobucks here.

9:16 PM
But don't ask me anything again.

@Jez you know what I mean.

Anything again?

Jez
@JohanLarsson frankly, not really, no.

@RegDwigнt arg! you're not supposed to ask that!

Jez
you speak english fine
at first i thought you were joking, but now i don't know

9:17 PM
The room, the room, the room is on fire. Björn mudderfogger, Björn.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I did make sure not to ask her specifically.

@RegDwigнt how considerate of you

Yes. Over 11 considerate in fact.

I'd say your consideration knows no bounds, but you just provided a bound

It's a supremum.

@Robusto It hurts worse if you do both knees

9:19 PM
> Consequently, the supremum is also referred to as the least upper bound (or LUB).
Huhuh, wiki said lube.

@RegDwigнt I thought that was Russian for love.

Close.
Lyube (Russian: Любэ, also romanized as Ljube or Lube) is a Russian band from Lubertsy, a suburb of Moscow. Lyube's music is a mixture of several genres, with influences from both Russian folk music, rock, Russian chanson, and Soviet military songs. The band was founded in 1989, and since then have released 16 albums. Lyube's producer and main songwriter is Igor Matvienko. == History == Igor Matvienko was a music producer and composer working at the Soviet music studio SPM Record when he came up with the idea to start Lyube in 1988. His goal was to put together a band with patriotic themed songs...

I was pronouncing it with a y-glide already.

> ... is a band ... have released ...
What is this grammar.

@medica Wait... why are you asking us? Presumably you would know better.

Jez
9:21 PM
@JohanLarsson care to elaborate a bit?

@Jez Just that I'm not sure I can get all the subtle stuff right. /whining from me about this now. Got old fast :)

Jez
and that means you "cant speak the language"? lol

It is my standard disclaimer when someone asks questions here and I take a guess.

I can't speak OVER 9000 languages. Beat that.

Think t is fair to mention it.

Jez
9:23 PM
@JohanLarsson anyway... you signing up to health.se?

@Mitch I wasn't actually asking the room. It was a question Jez asked me. I know a lot about me.

Mitch is making jokes. It's what he does.

Jez
@medica it was not a question, for the record.

@medica Can I ask things?
@Jez not sure.

@RegDwigнt and growing!

9:24 PM
@Robusto and for the record (and I hope he knows this) I love his jokes.

Jez
@JohanLarsson i committed to Bitcoin ffs, and found 5 things to ask about that :-)

@Robusto @Mitch's jokes, I mean.

Jez
health is such a huge topic, there are a plethora of interesting things to ask (and answer!)
@medica nice try, but you obviously meant my jokes :-)

@Jez and ignore! Don't forget to ask and ignore.

@medica getting close to the bottom of the transcript ... and the bartender responds "Why the long face?" rimshot

Jez
9:26 PM
@medica yep, ignoring is important.

@Mitch eww, again?
What is a rimshot anyway?

Jez
@JohanLarsson linky:
114
Health

Proposed Q&A site for medical specialists, students, dietitians and anyone with health-related questions

Currently in commitment.

Is that in basketball?
I just assumed it's basketball.

@medica oh..hm... no I think it is when a drummer hits the metal edge of the drum instead of the drum head itself.

9:29 PM
@JohanLarsson that kinda scared me... :-O
@Mitch Oh!

that's what it is literally...but it refers to when a drumer does thae 'ba da -TISCHHHH' sound.

Jez
@Mitch or when a basketball player's shot only hits the rim.

How would one ever know that?! Live and learn. @JohanLarsson - thank you!

snare-bass-highhat... er something...like when Groucho Marks make a comment like "If I were your husband, I'd take it"
You know, Groucho Marks and Spencer.

@Mitch That's Churchill!

9:31 PM
@medica OK...when Groucho Marx says "Take my wife...please"

I don't know enough people, clearly, to learn modern English.
@Mitch That's... who was that?

Vincent Price?

lol

Sid Caesar?
Henny Youngman!!

no, his wife maybe!

9:32 PM
:D

Or like when Groucho Marx said "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people."

@Mitch That's it!
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 LOL

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 scooped!

I'm not sure what we're doing here.

funny people.

9:33 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It was pretty funny when he said it

Jez
@JohanLarsson i don't get why you appeared to be seriously considering committing when you so readily changed your mind

lol

I’m glad my re/de/be/un-head answer got more votes than my Streep one did today.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 In the practical sense or existential sense?
@tchrist links? (for both)

@Jez I thought it was just signing up. The promise part put me off, sry.

9:34 PM
I took a whole semester on Karl Marx. Ten years later, the only thing I remembered was communism and the opiate of the people. What a shame.

Who would be so churlish to not upvote Streep?

Jez
@JohanLarsson what did you think "signing up" meant? lol

@medica Millions of people would be gnashing their teeth at you insouciance.
Only a handful of Cubans left now.

@Mitch I gnash my teeth at me a lot, too.

Jez
@medica in other news, the dentist gave me a pretty good oral hygiene report
i'm going back next week to have a mouthguard made to help deal with the fact that i tend to grind my teeth

9:36 PM
@medica It's easier to ignore the others.

@Mitch I'm pretty excited by the idea of going to Cuba. I want to scuba dive there.

@medica Nice! real plans?

@Mitch In the I'm-losing-the-thread-of-this-chat-again sense.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 there's a thread?
Ever?

@Mitch Yeah, really! I've been waiting a decade for this.

Jez
9:37 PM
@JohanLarsson are you literally saying that it's too much effort to ask or answer a few questions over the course of a year, with no punishment if you don't?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 We can go back to pregnant legos if you want.

@Mitch They have terriffic nature preserves and have excellently managed coral reefs.

@Mitch ah! so that would be a lego lass
and we're back to Balrogs

@medica I like the idea of doing that, but realistically, ...wait.. they are pretty geared up for tourists, right? but mostly Canadian and European?

> A programmer had a chat on ELU. He thought to himself, "I know, I'll follow the thread of the chat on ELU!". has Now problems. two he

9:39 PM
@Mitch Yes.

@Mitch Lots of Americans already go to Cuba. They just come here first to fly there.

@Mitch I want to see their preserves. They're the best thing close to us. And my husband won't scuba dive in the Great Barrier reef. :-( Scared of sharks. Like they don't have them in Cuba, but I'm not going to say anything!

Don't they have to have their passports not stamped somehow on purpose?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 What about passports?
@Mitch jinx

!!coke

9:42 PM
:D
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 One more thing to envy Canada about. sigh

@medica small jelly fish that kill you. um other stuff that kills you. scary movies about everything in the water that kills you. That's all I got about Australia. Sorry, Australia.

@medica Hm, I'm not sure? But I know they go there.

@medica where are the reefs? The Florida side or the Carribbean side?

@Mitch Sydney funnel spiders. Blue ringed octopuses. Australia has more poisonous creatures than any other continent I think
@Mitch Caribbean, I think
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I have been hoping for this for years.

@medica Exactly. Nice quiet people who may or may not inform you that that cute little furball that you're petting WILL KILL YOU WITH ONE LOOK.
@medica Oh...so it was you that started all this. Well played.

9:46 PM
Some poor British woman had a baby here prematurely. Now her bills are over 200K. :-( American health care. pfft.
@Mitch :-O

@Jez It is more about making a promise I'm not sure I will honor.

Jez
@JohanLarsson as i explained, it's not mandatory
so your promise is basically "I will try to ask/answer 5 questions" :-)
you can't really fail that

It looks like I killed the room. Sorry about that. I will go now.
Bye to all.

Jez
cya

@Jez ok comitted now. Guess I'll have to steal the hemorrhoid q.

Jez
9:50 PM
lol :-)
im sure there are many questions about piles

@JohanLarsson There's lots of room there for more questions. Im sure of it.
Jinx!!

Jez
we're not quite sure why they form. isn't that crazy?
something to do with increased pressure in anal blood vessels

@Mitch Ok Mitch, your turn to commit now imo!

Jez
jez agrees
health is so wide a topic i actually predict that once Health.SE gets up and running, there may be proposals to split it
the two that spring to mind are mental health and dentistry
at first, though, they will be tags on Health

Haha.

Jez
9:58 PM
pediatrics
that's another one

@Cerberus Why so happy?

Jez
but there may be an advantage to just having all the health experts concentrated on one site instead
we're gonna want quality answers on a topic as important as health

@JohanLarsson Because of all the funny things said in this room.
@Jez I don't think it will ever happen.

@Cerberus Commit to health now. Make Jez happy.

SE probably don't want the liability of medical advice.

Jez
9:59 PM
thing is, there are various health Q&A sites on the web, but none with the quality of stackexchange, along with the voting mechanism
@Cerberus how come
@Cerberus all one needs is a disclaimer.

Meh.
Honestly, I wouldn't trust my health to the votes of random people around the Intertubes.
2

Jez
what's the lawyer's argument? "my client drank bleach because of this site." "the site clearly said that its advice was not definitive and that one should consult a physician before trying treatment"
@Cerberus yeah, but the answers can have good quality references too. like with Skeptics. that way you're not just taking someone's word for it.

Time to go get free Lego. bye all

Good luck.
@Jez We'll see.

Jez
10:05 PM
@Cerberus why not commit and increase the quality of the answers (the ones you know, anyway)?
0
A: I'm tired of writing out the phrase "himself or herself". What are my options?

JezTwo solutions spring to mind. One is to use (as is done with standard gendered pronouns) the singular they: They hit themself on the head. The other (my personal favourite) is to use a gender-neutral pronoun, thon being the most English-sounding and simple to learn in my opinion: Thon ...

i couldn't resist :-P
