Does deleting and un-deleting clear close votes?

@apaul34208 I don't believe so

mod votes close it. No more are required
when it's reopened the close votes are gone
doesn't deal with deleting

Oh never mind looks like a shog thing
Still a dup. no?

no
one deals with oil
the other is presumably dirt and dust type stuff

12:23 AM
Looks like the same question he just doesn't like the answers on the prev one. Wouldn't a bounty be more appropriate?

Q: Self-deletion and un-deletion without any changes should reinstate the original close/delete votes

BartCurrently, when a user self-deletes a post and subsequently undeletes it, any votes to delete or votes to close magically disappear as if they never happened. While that might make some sense if a user deleted a post to then significantly update it, it seems to make no sense in the case where not...

implemented ^^

@J.Musser I thought that was the case... Apparently @Shog9 reopened the post for some reason.

4 mins ago, by Zach Saucier
the other is presumably dirt and dust type stuff

@apaul34208 prolly all the edits.

@ZachSaucier The same answers would still apply, I think he's talking about oil from hands/fingers.

12:48 AM
Are personal productivity questions on-topic? I can't quite put my finger on it but this question bugs me.

@apaul34208 Yeah, if asking for a hack, and they aren't off-topic as defined by the scope

1:03 AM
@apaul34208 it's not asking for a hack, it's asking for general solutions

@Gilles I was thinking that may be the case. Couldn't think of a hack beyond "Write it on the back of your hand..."

@Shokhet Mind slowing down with the 'too chatty' comments? I keep having to flag them. This site is messy enough with all the '+1, thanks' type comments. Thanks!
Really, comments should only be used to ask for more information or to let someone know something essential. Voting is for thanks.

1 hour later…
3:49 AM
@J.Musser I usually make those comments on the first review queue -- the purpose being to make new contributors feel welcome, and try to help them integrate into this community. I usually put tips and critiques in those comments, as well.

4:02 AM
Most of the worst examples I had removed.

@J.Musser There are exceptions to that of course. I said "usually," not "always." ....besides, I think there is a tangible benefit to those comments, mainly that a new user knows that his post was seen and thought about.
This is SOP on many SEs I'm on.
.....especially in light of a comment on Meta by Robert (that I couldn't find) that said that it will be hard to retain contributors to this site while we figure out scope and such

@Shokhet That's what votes are for

@J.Musser Not all new users understand what votes are (those with the association benefit should), but nothing says it like a comment.

@Shokhet That's not a good reason.

@J.Musser Did you just see that spam/offensive flag?

4:07 AM
@Shokhet Yeah.
It was invalid.

.....I just started seeing those a little while ago, and I'm still not sure what to do with them....this one seemed fine (even in context), so I clicked "invalid," and SE told me that I can't counterflag messages that don't have flags....?
@J.Musser Oh, you took care of it? I see....

@Shokhet You got there too late.

@J.Musser I see.

Once you have 10k combined rep, you can see those flags on all of se chat (not mse chat though).
You have to be fast, or all the other 10k-ers on the network (who are in chat) will get there first.

@J.Musser I know; I'm still not sure what to do with them....link only messages, for example, depend greatly on context. Offensive also -- depends a lot on context and history between those users and in that room.
@J.Musser That was the first one that I didn't automatically click "not sure" on :P
....still learning.

4:11 AM
If there's a link in the post, and it was marked offensive, some people say better safe than sorry, but I always follow, just to be sure.
@Shokhet If it's not blatantly offensive, you need to run through transcript and look at context.

This was also the first flag that I figured out that the timestamp wasn't the link (as it is for comments, and oneboxed chat messages), but rather the room name (which doesn't take you to the room, as I originally thought)
@J.Musser Right. Although my definition of "blatantly offensive" might not mean anything....say, if the poster was recounting a story that happened, and was saying that someone else had said those things

@Shokhet If they are blatantly offensive, he's posting it at risk of being flagged.

@J.Musser Hm. Like I said, I'm still new at this chat-flag stuff.

@Shokhet Yeah, newly 10k. :)
Which is actually a respectable amount of rep.

:) .....not so newly 10k, but this was about the fifth chat flag I've seen, if memory serves
@J.Musser I know; I'm not complaining :)

4:16 AM
I'm complaining cause I don't have 30k yet :(
jk

:)

@Shokhet I just read your about me, and it made me wonder if you had the informed badge.
haha
You don't.
congrats on the convention badge, btw, that's a good one.

@J.Musser That takes about two seconds to fix
@J.Musser Oh yes, that should definitely go in there

@Shokhet I know, easiest badge ever.

....this is the second site I got that one (convention, not informed)

4:27 AM
@Shokhet I got it first >:D

@J.Musser Really? grumble

@J.Musser Fixed, now :)
@J.Musser Correct. ....as room owner, shouldn't you move that to AU's chat? :P

@Shokhet they're all dead

@J.Musser ....they don't chat?

4:29 AM
Just letting you guys flag it quick so it doesn't hang around

I see.
@J.Musser It's been three minutes, and it has a score of -6 ....those should be accompanied by flags, hopefully.

No, the chatbot picked it up, and posted in that room
@Shokhet That's bad
It means smeone dved

@J.Musser Oh? ....I've seen spam on MSE stay for 15-20 minutes
@J.Musser No, spam/offensive flags add an automatic DV; try it
(I think)

@Shokhet Yes. A spam flag will -1, and 6 spam flags will kill. That means that if it's at -6 and it's still there, someone dv-ed. That makes it more confusing to keep tabs on.

@J.Musser Ah. I see.

4:34 AM
I was the 10th person to get the beta badge. :( that's not very early

@J.Musser Didn't we all get that at the same time?

@Shokhet yeah, but we are in a certain order.

@J.Musser I didn't think that there was anything to that, was there?

@Shokhet What?

@J.Musser There was an order, for sure, but I thought it was just because the system couldn't give everyone badges simultaneously.
.....maybe alphabetical?

4:36 AM
@Shokhet Yeah, we are in order of userid

Ah. That would make sense.
....so you got your Beta badge before I did, right? (too lazy to check manually)

Some things are in alphabetical order.
Like moderators on the moderators page.

right
....there's probly an MSE post about this, somewhere

Speaking of which...
nothing is happening.

@J.Musser ?

4:39 AM
@Shokhet ?wut

we do this too much, don't we? :P

what

....nothing is happening, where? on MSE? in TOTM? somewhere else?

@Shokhet with the moderators.
No one is appointed yet.
Haha, you're catching up vote-wise

Oh. I wouldn't expect that for a while.....worldbuilding took a while to get their mods
@J.Musser votes gotten? given?

4:41 AM
@Shokhet SR was like next-day
@Shokhet on the nomination

@J.Musser Oh. I hadn't checked that, recently.

@J.Musser Cool. Now I have more votes than Matt S. :)

Q: How medical is too medical?

ShokhetSo apparently, we've agreed that medical questions are off-topic here, largely because accuracy matters, and we can't take the responsibility to judge serious medical issues through the SE format -- it just won't end up working well. I agree with that. However, I think that some medical question...

Ah, there's your q.

Yup. I didn't announce it, because I figured @MacGyver would do that for me
@J.Musser I was just there :P

I left u a comment
Want thoughts

@J.Musser Okay. I responded there.

Uh, your as bad at proving a point as I am.
:/
@Shokhet I answered that one
just for fun though

@J.Musser I saw; I upvoted, but also saw apaul's comment
@J.Musser I responded to your response.

lol
@Shokhet I responded to your response to my response

@J.Musser I'm in the middle of responding to that.

tbh, I don't get your last one.
....we'll change the scope as needed. This is good for now, and I think removes some of the "gerrymandering" we're all scared of

5:02 AM
@J.Musser drupal is some kind of joke on MSE, something about always getting spammed....what's up with that?
Why would anyone spam Drupal, of all sites?

5:13 AM
....with that, I think, I'll call it a night. Good night, @J.Musser! :)

Q: Why was this question about cleaning sticky floor closed as off-topic?

WipqoznThis question has been closed as off-topic: How do I clean my sticky floor after a party night? The only reason justification given by the closers was from Zach, who said: Since cleaning it with a mop and floor cleaner doesn't work, it means you'll need a really heavy duty solution which me...

Q: While the site is in beta, explain why you're closing a question

SternoI keep seeing questions getting closed as off-topic without any real explanation about why they're off-topic. This site is in beta, and we're still struggling with nailing down the scope. Now more than ever it is important to explain to users why their questions are being closed, rather than clos...

1 hour later…
5:07 PM
@MacGyver I'm really glad you made that, @Sterno. I've been debating bringing it up myself.
In fact, it's the lack of reasoning that made me post this question on meta. I was just going to make a meta saying we shouldn't close questions reasons eluded to in @ZachSaucier's comment, but since that was the only comment bout the post not being good for the site I wanted to get more fleshed out reasoning before proceeding.

@Shokhet Drupal gets by far the most spam on SE, tagged by MSE. SO actually gets a lot less.

@J.Musser Strange. Wonder why that is.

@Wipqozn No one knows.

Q: How to work around European size hardware measurements

YeZI have some furniture which was made in Europe. The bolts and what-not are all in European measurements. Some of the bolts came loose and were misplaced, and some of the pieces necessary for converting stages of the furniture were missing. I went to the local hardware store, and they did not s...

Is this strictly off-topic or just poorly worded? Seems like it could be salvaged with a simple edit.

@apaul34208 The question isn't clear enough imo.
I'm really not sure what he's trying to ask.
Is he referring to metric vs imperial, or something else?
It's very confusing.
It's currently close worthy for being unclear, but not off-topic.
Can't really close as off-topic if we're not sure what they're asking.

6:29 PM
@Wipqozn The 4 close votes at the moment are all "off-topic"
I would understand a too-broad or unclear
But like I said a quick edit should improve clarity

6:48 PM
@apaul34208 Yeah, I'd say those close votes are wrong.
Also, people seriously need to start giving reasons why they're closing things as off-topic.
Right now users are just pointed to our help centre, which is currently useless for determining what our scope is and explaining why something is off-topic.

Hiya @Sue

Sue
@J.Musser Hi back!
Way cool! Do you multi-chat or usually one room at a time?
I've seen other people here who've been nice to me, like Shokhet.

@Sue I'm in 10 chatrooms right now. Sometimes more sometimes less.

Sue
Yikes! That's why you have so many friends!
Before I forget, I lost my link to the Sandbox-can you give it to me when you have a minute?

@Gilles Nous pourrions, je suppose.

Sue
I'm having so much fun. Going to have to work on my French. You seem like the type who doesn't sleep a lot-do you parlez à votre amì Francais when it's nuit here?

@Sue Me?
I get at least a good 3 hours a night.

Sue
Oui!
That's about what I figured!

Uh, that's not bad though.
Quelle est la quantité normale de sommeil chaque nuit ?
Je ne suis pas sûr

Sue
8 heures je ponce (think!?). C'est la recommendacion.

11:38 PM
@Sue je pense
8 heures, c'est beaucoup pour un adulte
3 heures, c'est dément : il y a vraiment des gens qui survivent avec ça ?

@Gilles oui, absolument

Sue
Pour moi, 6 hheures.

In animals, sleep is a naturally recurring state characterized by altered consciousness, relatively inhibited sensory activity, and inhibition of nearly all voluntary muscles. It is distinguished from wakefulness by a decreased ability to react to stimuli, and it is more easily reversible than being in hibernation or a coma. During sleep, most systems in an animal are in a heightened anabolic state, accentuating the growth and rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems. Sleep in non-human animals is observed in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, and in some...

Sue
Ha ha!

How do you say 'how are y'all' in hebrew?
איך כולכם נמצאים ?
way too hard, you can't type it.
You have to copy/paste chars.

Sue
I took Latin in high school, had to choose between that and Greek. Now that I'm a Christian, wish I'd chosen Greek!

@J.Musser Nope, I type in Hebrew :P

@Shokhet I can't figure out how

Sue
I have some Jewish relatives fluent in Hebrew, can't imagine learning it as an adult.

@Sue I studied it before, but I'm far from fluent.

Sue
@J.Musser a Which-French or Greek?

@Sue Hebrew.
And Greek, how'd ya guess?
And some latin, and other languages.
