Hi English-language readers! This blog post is not for you; perhaps you’d like a hat instead? No? Well, when last we spoke of creating non-English versions of Stack Overflow, some of you were certain we should’ve gone the easy route and just leveraged a machine translation service instead of creating real sites for real people to use. I humbly invite you to read the rest of this post using the mechanical babelfish of your choice, and see if you think such tools can be relied on for important work… …

OK you may resume wildly voting on my posts now.

@DoubleAA Butter doesn't need to be chalav Yisrael (even without Rav Moshe's heter). [citation needed]

yodeya.com/a/50328 has my theoretical vote for deletion as a 10,000-rep user (not actually being cast because that'd effect deletion). Deletion is for answers of "extremely low quality: There is little to no scope for improvement", which I think describes this one pretty well; moreover, it's taking up a lot of screen real estate. Three deletion votes delete it, so if it garners two, I'll actually cast mine.
... b'li neder. Assuming I see the two deletion votes.

@msh210 I disagree. I think he makes his case plausibly. I'm not convinced that he's right, but I don't think it's so off-the-wall as to merit deletion.

We have a user with that gematria in fact. — Double AA ♦ 12 hours ago
Pinging @Shokhet ^^^
@IsaacMoses I concur. @msh210

@DoubleAA With whom?
@DoubleAA Oh! Now I get it. Yay for Yiddish

3:52 PM
@IsaacMoses I posted that based on what I'd read, which had been before the addendum was, er, added. I guess you're right for the current version. (Which means I was wrong about the earlier version that there's "little to no scope for improvement".) But I'd up your "I'm not convinced he's right" to "I'm fairly well convinced he's wrong".
@IsaacMoses I think it was a comment on the oddity of transliteration (which iirc is noted by @Shokhet himself) rather than on Yiddish spelling.
Did I get that right, @DoubleAA?

@msh210 Me, too, rather.
@msh210 His profile points to this as explanation for the transliteration, apparently indicating that it's based on a surname that's spelled in Hebrew with a 'chof', which I presume is due to Yiddish transliteration

I'd be surprised to learn that "ritual slaughterer" in Yiddish is spelled with a khaf, @IsaacMoses.

@msh210 I'd've been surprised to learn that "Judah" in Yiddish was spelled with a final 'alef', but apparently, it is

I should clarify:

Welcome to the Bam, @BSteinhurst

4:05 PM
I'd be surprised to learn it's spelled שכט. (Otoh שעכט wouldn't surprise me.)

@IsaacMoses Thanks but just passing through this morning.

Er, sorry. (Mobile. Can't see as much of the above at a time.) That's "slaughter" not "slaughterer". The point stands, though: I tend to doubt שכט is a word.

4:40 PM
Yiddish doesn't have formal spelling rules, just loose convention. If it represents the pronunciation of the word, you can never really say it is wrong. Just saying ...

Q: Setting aside Shabbat to answer the President's call

Isaac MosesIn an old MSNBC news story about Jack Lew, a Shabbat-observant Jew who was just appointed to be the new White House Chief of Staff, there's a story about his getting a call from President Clinton when Lew was his budget director. It says: Lew later consulted with his rabbi, who said that taki...

A: If Lev Melech B'yad Hashem, why bother voting?

Isaac MosesIn an apparently-open letter dated October 3, 1984, R' Moshe Feinstein urged Jews in the United States to vote as a means of expressing hakaras hatov (appreciation) for the democratic system in the United States, which allows for a safe haven in which Jews can live and practice Judaism. The lette...

@IsaacMoses I meant the former, but it's particularly appropriate with the second of those posts.
It gives Uncle Sam a Vivi-like face and a British Parliament-like wig.

@YeZ Heh. Good point about the wig. Did you see how I had Jew-bling earrings in it before?

I'm supposed to have a hairboat, but my icon doesn't have any hair.

Q: Is it OK to say "Jew-bling"? ... Closed as off-topic.

7:46 PM
I feel like i'm changing my hat every few minutes. I need to stop.
But i did retake 1st place (currently tied with @IsaacMoses)!

YeZ
@IsaacMoses No, I missed that.

@IsaacMoses Yup!

@Scimonster Again?

@IsaacMoses Yes. I'm a hat-chaser. (At least here - too hard to keep up on MSE and SO.)

YeZ
8:04 PM
@IsaacMoses You put back on your Jew-bling?

@YeZ It's getting close to Chanuka. I don't want to be without my stars of David.

YeZ
@IsaacMoses Fine, but the bow-tie did finish off your black-hole-face very nicely.

@YeZ Gotta step back from the assimilation sometimes.

YeZ
@IsaacMoses Even at the cost of having a well-defined face!

Thank you, whoever just allowed me to pull ahead of @Scimonster.
Awooooo!

8:13 PM
@MonicaCellio - thanks for the edit! It's a privilege to share a post with you. :) And quick update on it: Jon is "going to raise it with our developers this week", but at a busy time. There's hope of progress on that front, anyway, which is good for us all, IMO.

@Davïd Just curious, what's this about?
@IsaacMoses NOOOOOO

@Scimonster Sorry - that was a bit overly cryptic. ;) We had a serendipitous joint project today, as it happened. Looks like it might come good!

@Scimonster (That wasn't you, was it? Cause that would be cute.)

@IsaacMoses What hat?

8:29 PM
@Scimonster Werewolf hunter

@IsaacMoses Why the edit? :P

@Scimonster Eh. Wasn't that funny

No, it wasn't. But i almost did.

@Scimonster You could try to reverse the effects by downvoting it.
Not that I would recommend gaming the hat system by messing with SE voting.

@IsaacMoses You don't lose badges anyways. I upvoted because i like the Q.

8:32 PM
@Scimonster Thanks.

The only badges that can be lost are tag badges.

YeZ
@Scimonster Can you lose hats? What if I delete and undelete an answer?

@YeZ I don't think you lose hats. Try it!
I have a funny latke hat. It doesn't really look like a latke.

YeZ
@Scimonster What do I need to delete? A positive or negative voted answer?

@Davïd hi! Glad to help, and thanks for making the suggestion. Great to hear it might gain some traction. So how're things with you?

8:41 PM
@YeZ I think you get it for either.

YeZ
@Scimonster Do you think I need to give it enough time to cache before undeleting?

@YeZ Probably.
I wonder why i don't have Fascinating, Maam yet.

YeZ
@Scimonster is that different than fascinating?

@YeZ Yes, maam.

YeZ
@Scimonster waiting for hat....
Can I get the badge for deleting a +3 answer and then undelete?

8:45 PM
@YeZ Yup.

@YeZ Sounds pretty sketchy

@IsaacMoses Yes, but technically permitted. (@YEZ)

YeZ
@IsaacMoses Well, I must try it in the name of science!

@IsaacMoses I just got a bunch of pings to Bam....you were discussing Joseph's answer to my "האל" question?
(I didn't read the addendum thoroughly, yet)
@IsaacMoses It's unclear to me as to whether this comment was made with regard to Joseph's answer, or something Yiddish.....I don't really follow that conversation, there.
@DoubleAA . . . .Don't we have users with many gematriyos? — Shokhet 13 secs ago
You're wearing my hat!!! Give it back! :P — Shokhet 6 secs ago

@Shokhet No, he's wearing his own hat. Yours is just superimposed. :P

8:57 PM
@Scimonster Did you give up on hats? ....I don't see one on you, now.

@Shokhet Zoom in, i have a funny latke.

@Scimonster Waffle?

@Shokhet Yup. Or a funny latke.

@Scimonster Similar to a "pasul menorah"? ;-)

@MonicaCellio A bit busy, but I get the impression that's a fairly widely shared feeling just now! Glad to say, I collected some "Gelt" earlier today - a little late, but better late than never! :)

8:59 PM
@Shokhet And the partial seder plate

@Scimonster If you got that, you should totally wear it :)

@Shokhet I didn't, and doubt i will. :/

@Scimonster You stand a good chance of it on Lifehacks, actually.
A very good chance

@Shokhet Possibly. Or SO.

Three answers in two minutes. I'm impressed! ;-) — Shokhet Dec 10 at 0:02

Well, GTG.

TZT, @Scimonster! חנוכה שמח :)

@Davïd I like how you collect gelt by giving away rep. :-)

This was a very fast answer. I'm impressed!

9:41 PM
@Shokhet I'm not sure if this is the place to discuss, but do you actually think Rabbeinu Efraim said that Binyamin was a werewolf?! I know that's what Slifkin claims on his blog but I didn't think anyone else believed that

@Matt Why wouldn't this be the place to discuss it?
@Matt I just skimmed the answers on that question....I didn't really do good research on it.

I don't use that chat much so I thought it might just be for discussing things more relevant to the site. In that case I'll just make a statement: IMHO, Rabbeinu Efraim never said that Binyamin was a werewolf (and that would be a pretty irreverent statement to make, I think)

I see. I've never seen it inside....and you're probably right that it's not really respectful to Binyamin.
D'you know where I might find a copy, so I could see what Rabbeinu Efraim actually said?

Well, the respectful issue would probably depend on whether you think werewolves are people lehalakha (like for tumas ohel, etc)... I would ask that as a question here, but...

I never thought about that. That would be an interesting issue to see raised here.
Why not ask?

9:57 PM
@DoubleAA, when you get down to it, saying that Binyamin was a werewolf is hardly less odd - except that it's a rishon who says it. — Alex Jan 20 '12 at 20:09
Alex for some reason seemed to have taken it literally FWIW. משיב חכמים אחור ודעתם יסכל I guess.

So does Slifkin. Less odd than what? And perhaps considering that the "not a real question" option as a vote to close doesn't exist anymore, maybe asking this question isn't so risky
2

@Matt Less odd than Esav being a vampire. See the earlier comments there.

sorry yeah I found it. and Eisav being a vampire isn't as odd, since it's not a matter of reverence for someone whom chazal have interpreted as a tzaddik

TZT everyone. Watch out for werewolves. :)

10:03 PM
Ah, that's an excellent example. Now I'm going to ask if werewolves and vampires are mitamin b'ohel... and elves! I should ask about elves!

TZT @Scimonster :) .....if I spot one, I'm ready ;-)
@Matt Define "elf," before asking, though....that's a tough one.

True. I already know about mermaids, luckily. There's a comment of the Raavad to Toras Kohanim which categorizes them as sea-creatures

They're mentioned on Bechoros 7b-8a (or thereabouts), if I'm not mistaken....but no mention about tumah

indeed, though the rishonim differ as to how to interpret it (it might just be referring to boring old dolphins or something like that), but I was going to ask about their halakhically human status

@Scimonster Ringring ringing. Telephone for me. Hello? Oh, am I two hats past Scimonster now? Wonderful. Thank you. <click>

@IsaacMoses <flag>Juvenile</flag>

10:11 PM
@Matt You might want to post a Q/A set about mermaids -- that would be interesting.
Also, you might want to ask separate questions about werewolves and vampires -- there is certainly room to say that they're different.
^^^ IMO, based on nothing in particular

Q: How shall we celebrate Mi Yodeya's fifth birthday?

Monica CellioOn 6 December 2009 (19 Kislev 5770) question #1 was asked, launching this excellent site. The fifth anniversary of Mi Yodeya's arrival in the world will, B"H, be coming up on 6 December (secular calendar) or 11 December (19 Kislev). How shall we celebrate this? (Yes Isaac, I noticed what you s...

10:25 PM
@Shokhet I think I was shortly after the 2.0 started.

@HodofHod Ah. That would probably explain it, then.

Yeah. I don't think it was listed in the network list till then, which is how I found it.

@Scimonster Nice!!!

10:27 PM
@Scimonster Y"K!!

I'm about to ask a question about shinuy .....do we have a shinuy tag? None popped up in the tag suggestion thingy

Not that I know of. Does shinuy need its own tag? What's the question?

A about shinuy.

Well, use your best judgement :)

So far, I've tagged [how-to], [shabbat], and [hotzaa-carrying-reshuyot]
Incidentally, it would also fit this question, that I linked to in mine.
I haven't found many questions that it would fit, though.....

10:35 PM
@Shokhet IMO, better to use the tag, and if the community thinks its sufficiently unnecessarily, we can remove it later. Better to use more tags than fewer, is my way of thinking.
The worst is when it's just [halacha] and nothing else.

@HodofHod Aha. I hear what you're saying.....
@HodofHod :)
Wording....., or just ?
.....some tags here add an English translation to them, some don't.

[shinuy-deviation] perhaps?
That is, I'd definitely recommend an English translation.

@HodofHod I know, then it feels like Stack Overflow. :O

@Scimonster *gasps*
:D

10:52 PM
@HodofHod That's a good idea.....I might just go for that.

You gave me an Evil (definitely) Genius (debatable) idea: think if I wrote a script to suggest tag edits based on keywords already contained in the title or body of a question, I could build an army of sock puppets with 1000 rep each.

@HodofHod Don't you already have a script that does that?
Oh, tag edits.....gotcha
Interesting idea.

...no. ?

no what?

Oh, you mean the suggest tags script I have? That suggests them to you, this would suggest them to SO review.

10:55 PM
IINM, you have a script that suggests tags for a question that the person asked. That's what I was thinking of.
@HodofHod Right, got that :)
Be careful, though....your sock puppets might create tags by accident.
They'd have to choose from a list of pre-existing tags.

@Shokhet Right. It'd have a pre-compiled list of likely tags.

11:22 PM
@HodofHod I asked it already. Now I think I'll edit the tag wiki for [shinuy-deviation]

11:34 PM
I'm not sure why there is an off-topic VTC here. IMO it's a perfectly okay question to ask, as it's about understanding a gemara. — Shokhet 40 secs ago
