I'll have a new list of stuff from Zephyr later too. It won't be super interesting because the stackbot is posting the same thing over and over (except for the final character of strings).

4:42 PM
@Undo Is SmokeDetector keeping an eye out for StackBot posts?

@Caleb It can't. It doesn't search answer bodies.

@hichris123 Savvy mate.

Q: Add a realtime answers tab to stackexchange.com

UndoWe already have an awesome realtime questions tab for every question that comes in over the whole network. But in the spirit of Optimizing For Pearls, Not Sand, shouldn't we also have a realtime answers tab? It'd be really neat to see the answers coming through for each question in the network,...

@Caleb There is a bot that does that, but it scrapes the question page, and we're not really sure if that's a good solution yet.

@hichris123 Well, it works.

@ProgramFOX Right, but it takes a lot more data, more code, and isn't exactly allowed yet by the powers that be.

4:50 PM
@hichris123 It's true that it takes more data. But how is it not exactly allowed? There were some devs/CM that checked out our room once. They liked it.

@ProgramFOX not allowed == no one has ever said it's ok. It's basically crawling, and at a high time that might hit the servers pretty hard.

Oh, I see.

@hichris123 You could use the events route on the API, couldn't you? It's not as instantaneous, but in this particular scenario I imagine detection is the key concern over timeliness.

Yeah, that was worded wrong.

I haven't really had time to look at how all this works, so. :P

4:53 PM
@TimStone Wait, does that cover all sites? That's the problem with other API methods, not sure if it's this one too, because they only cover a single site.

Ah, yes.
I forgot about that.
Although it could still be done for commonly-targeted sites.

@TimStone True.

yeah, I really want to do answers in a non-hacky way with Smokey

I agree. It would be awesome to have.

and I'm not so concerned about bandwidth (I can absorb the five cents or whatever it costs a year to run it), but I've gotten my hand slapped once by a CM, not really wanting to do it again.
(also, my monthly bill for a server, a couple GBs of S3 never-ever-going-to-disappear storage is now $4. For a VPS. I win.)

:O
Where have you purchased the server?

AWS

cool

5:49 PM
$50 upfront per year, but it's totally worth it.

@Undo I'm totally thinking of getting a reserved t2.micro instance. It's like $145 upfront + no monthly.

@hichris123 that must be for a 3-yr term?
wait, no monthly?

@Undo yep
@Undo There'd probably be some for bandwidth + RDS, but other than that...

wow, that's an awesome deal

3-YEAR TERM
Payment Option	Upfront	Monthly*	Effective Hourly**	Savings over On-Demand	On-Demand Hourly
Partial Upfront	$109	$1.46	$0.0061	53%	$0.013 per Hour
All Upfront	$151	$0.00	$0.0057	56%

5:56 PM
When my current one expires, I'll prolly switch over to one of those
that's a bunch of money

yup
Model	vCPU	Mem (GiB)	Storage (GB)
hs1.8xlarge	16	117	24 x 2000
@Undo ^

that's enough storage, alright.

lol

                    }

@Undo So you took that task...

@SantaClaus of course.
