Is an answer that didn't seem to understand the question not-an-answer?
meaning he attempted to answer the question, not just a "comment" like the normal not an answer, but he doesn't seem to get what the questioner is asking

@YEZ If it doesn't address the question, it's probably valid to flag it as not an answer.

@IsaacMoses and I assume to recommend deletion as such also?

@YEZ seems to me

Q: Naming after two people

YEZCan one person be given one name (as opposed to a double name) which is meant to "correspond" to two different deceased individuals? I.e. Chaim and Shprintza have a daughter. Chaim's grandmother was named Genendel and Shprintza's grandmother was named Genendel. Can their daughter be named Gene...

^^^ why do I get the "may have an answer" banner for one close vote? Is that something only I see?

@YEZ Sorry, that was my close vote
just got the privilege, a little trigger happy ;)

YEZ
@Shokhet I think you can actually retract within a time frame. But still curious about the banner.
If you click on the close link again, I think you can retract.

@YEZ I don't see the banner, if that helps you

@Shokhet OK I assume that's my answer.

Vote is retracted

@Shokhet mazal tov on 3k, btw!

@YEZ Thanks :)

@YEZ only the OP sees that banner while there's a duplicate-vote pending (but the question is open). I suspect it's meant to give the person who wants an answer to his question a little extra, early help -- hey, maybe this answers it for you, and why wait until five people vote to tell you that? (I know that in this specific case it's no longer relevant; I'm answering the general question.)

YEZ
@MonicaCellio Thanks.

@Shokhet oh, congrats on 3k!

@MonicaCellio Thanks :)

Q: Ayin hora - evil eye

R. MoI have observed a Phenomenon among older european jewry ( i.e. yiddishe mammes and babbes) not to display pictures of their children or grandchildren ( eineklach) in open areas for fear of ayin hora. [And if they do show someone the pictures ( when they can't hold themselves back), there is a cu...

I think this question can be reopened know (vote cast)
And I turn around and it's reopened ( @DoubleAA )

Q: Use the new tag tip feature for [halacha]

ScimonsterWe've long had a CYLOR disclaimer in the halacha tag wiki. A few days ago, SE gave tag specific pop ups. Could we enable this here?

Q: What Stack Exchange questions are of interest?

msh210What questions on other Stack Exchange sites are relevant to Mi Yodeya? I'm thinking of ones that might be on-topic or almost on-topic on MY (or entire tags of such questions). (But I'm not interested in a question that's relevant only to a specific MY question, and linked therefrom, and not oth...

@Shokhet How do they decide whether a question is objectively-answerable over there?

@IsaacMoses There was just a whole conversation in their main chat room today about it (scroll back to before the D&D discussion)
I expect it's something similar to what we do, but I'm not sure if there's anything official

@Shokhet "What can you imagine that would work in this fictional, fantastical scenario" seems more open-ended than most SE sites would handle

@IsaacMoses I know.
Chat conversation starts here

@Shokhet Thanks

I think the maskana was, if you can limit the field (either science as we know it, or a specific brand of magic), and can tell me why one thing would be better than another ("easily repeatable, cheap, portable, reliable"), then it's on-topic

@Shokhet Sounds like they're thinking in the right direction (i.e. similar to how we do ;^) . This golem question, I see, limits solutions to "science as we know it" and attempts to define the golem parameters clearly, but the suitability of answers still depends on what fanastical ideas about golems you assume.

@IsaacMoses Sounds about right.

@Shokhet I haven't read everything from the chat (that room runneth over :-) ), but that's how I view scoping on that site. Questions still have to be good SE questions; this is not a brainstorming site, a discussion forum, etc. So, questions need to be clear about constraints and we need to be able to tell whether an answer is an answer.

@MonicaCellio I agree (for whatever that's worth.....I was a WB member for a week, and 3 days of that was Yom Tov ;)
How come we never discuss D&D in Bam?

@Shokhet I committed to the proposal, so I've been there longer but also had more days off. :-)
@Shokhet I suspect there's no such thing as a short D&D discussion, and we all tend to be mindful of taking over the room with stuff that's really not related to Mi Yodeya at all for long stretches?

9:30 PM
@MonicaCellio Fair enough :)

@DoubleAA Very very strangely, I just received an upvote on this:

Q: Add Wiktionary to Chat Onebox

TRiGChat already oneboxes Wikipedia links, so it would surely be quick and easy to add support for other MediaWiki sites. I'd particularly like to see Wiktionary added. Please.
