Q: iptables routing incoming IP to another destination IP question

Ryan GrantI have a test setup: server1:1.1.1.1 server2:2.2.2.2 client: 3.3.3.3 and I'm trying to have client ip 3.3.3.3 do a HTTP request from 1.1.1.1 server. However I want the 1.1.1.1 server to pass this request onto the real HTTPD server 2.2.2.2. I would like 2.2.2.2 to directly talk to client 3....

Q: UBUNTU: Uncomplicated Firewall : Automatic Duration

rkevs21I need some help, is it possible to have an automatic duration for several minutes using the Uncomplicated Firewall (built in firewall) in Ubuntu using the ufw shell commands? Like, when I want to allow a SSH service for just 5 minutes (not cron). Is it possible? How can i do that thing?

@NathanOsman check this out google-gruyere.appspot.com
anyone else who wants to see how people can mess with your website look at the posted link as well

2:25 AM
kill it with fire: askubuntu.com/q/524961/62483
@NoTime should I watch it?

@Lucio my link or the question?

no idea what are we talking about now O.O

that question can probably be resolved by doing boot-repair
and update grub
the link I did is fun/informative/safe way to hack a site

oh good
hey, you can help me with something :)

I can see if I am able to

2:33 AM
yeah, you are :)
networking

what exactly do you have an issue with?

theory
there is something I don't understand
The thing is..

im massaging wife atm so 1 hand typing
7

@NoTime O_O

its ok shes chatting online too
So you are trying to understand how a server on VM works?
not massaging now

2:38 AM
eh oh yeah
still shocked

what? shocked why?
@Lucio ?

whatever

i was massaging her neck. Not sure if you were thinking something else

no, no really
I mean, really?
ok, I forgot what were we...talking before you..etc
networking?

you started asking about http server in a vm

2:46 AM
ah great
yeah
a server on a VM
if it is running on 0.0.0.0 I can access it on the host machine
if it is running on 127.0.0.1 I cannot
@NoTime why?

thaat is a loopback address

but I can access it from the VM machine

127.0.0.1 is a special address that you use to test your NIC and the TCP/IP stack

I know that
ping blablabla

Sorry I am not sure I am getting the question right

2:49 AM
but what about the server?
I mean, why can I access the server on 0.0.0.0 from the host machine?
I don't understand how does networking works in a VM

It depends how it is set up, but your computer has an internal IP address that it uses for the VM, which it talks to over a "network" (really it's kinda just going through a socket which the virtualware is accessing)

right

The Internet needs a new transport layer protocol.

the VM is given an external IP, which is translated into that address (VM address on your computer)

@NathanOsman but I don't understand the current one :(
@NoTime mine is 192.168.xx.x

2:53 AM
Um.. so I don't think I am explaining this right
yeah thats a internal network address

@NoTime no, no, you are, I was talking with nathan there
what about that internal network address
is it accessible from the host machine only?

Kinda like a subnet.. if that makes sense
it goes in and out through a socket basically

I didn't get that subnet and socket part

a socket is just IP and port together

yeah, but you said "kinda like a subnet"

2:56 AM
yeah I am trying to think how to explain how the guest is separated from the rest of your network/computer

ah right
that is where I want to go :D
how the heck is this separated??
I'm pure ears :)

Do you understand subnets?
I am trying to relate it, that is about the best way I can (use analogies and such)

I know what subneting is
I know 'till layer 4 in OSI model

Ok. So when you subnet, you kind of create a brand new network, that when simple has 1 point of entry (in this case let's say a server)
Think of your host machine as a server

yep
I get that

2:58 AM
It is connected to the external network (your physical network connection)
it gets an IP like 10.0.0.23

my host machine is, but the VM?
wait, which computer do you mean?

Host as in machine hosting the virtual machine/guest

the host machine gets an IP like that one
yeah, yeah

ok.
so then it "sends" traffic to your guest on a socket.. in your case lets say 192.168.0.1:55889
that would be the gateway from your virtual network

yep
@NoTime does that happens when the VM (guest) is turned on?

3:01 AM
once it hits the gateway, it sends the packet using the internal ARP table to the guests IP (that was mapped with a virtual MAC address)
@Lucio you mean the sending of the packet?

yep
the whole process that you are explaining

@Lucio I am not sure how the resources are shared exactly, if it also goes through the virtual circuit/virtual network

O.o

you should get wireshark if you want to follow it completely :)

hehe, that will help :)

3:04 AM
run it on both machines then send a ping from guest to host

I will use it, didn't knew I could play with VM with it :P

and traceroute from guest to your networks router
you would need it on both machines probably
since.. logically the virtual machine is on a different network
does that make sense yet?
or at least kinda

yeah, that makes sense
you are explaining it perfectly slowly :)

It feels like it would be easier to do with a diagram along side of me saying it

that would be like heaven
but unnecessary
hey, I want to know more

3:07 AM
What part? I am not really an expert on this :)
I am sure some of this has parts that aren't perfectly right

now I get why 127.0.0.1 is unaccessible from outside
thanks for that! @NoTime

No problem.. I want to draw this for you too

@NoTime what?
I have more questions for you :D

ok gimme a couple minutes busy sorry

no worry, I will wait

3:20 AM
ok @Lucio check this out maybe it will help

http://imgur.com/h8Swqxi

Oh, I have one too:
Not needed to put the names, very intuitive ;)

That looks like a map to me

heh, they are computers!

I understand it I just wouldn't know what it was if I didn't know what it was :P

@NoTime Oh, you added a "Virtual Access"
@NoTime haha, you got it, came on

3:23 AM
I am kinda thinking of it like a router too.. 1 port has 2 IP addresses

What does that "VA" represents?

Basically what i just said :) it's the "gateway" from virtual network to physical(host) machine

but you wrote 2 IPs... 192.168.x.1 and 192.168.x.2
that is what I don't get :/

Machines have 1 IP, they hit device on 1 IP, goes out on different IP

isn't the "go out" part the broadcast?

3:26 AM
The flow of packet would hit all the IPs left to right
then back to guest right to left

That is too much science for me.
6 mins ago, by Lucio
user image
..back to the roots

Ok just think 192>192 | >10>10>10>|?>Internet

You can see that C is the guest and A is the host
@NoTime nevermind

@hbdgaf idc. it's fun.

As you also can see, B is another machine on the local network than A

3:28 AM
there is a kinda gateway between C to A

right
...

and there would be a device between A and B unless peer to peer network
with a crossover cable

indeed
one of the best

heh

now the question:
How does B access the server running on C?

3:30 AM
NAT

hum
did you see the sun at the top left?

yeah

that means you have to more specific :)

heh
ok Network Address Translation

yeah, I know what it means xD

3:31 AM
It uses sockets as well

I'm asking what do I do with it :P

ok so.. your packet from C goes to A it has a little peice that says HEY I BELONG TO THIS NETWORK

oh, I see you are going for port forwarding...
go on

The virtual device goes HEY ALL TRAFFIC FROM X IP PORT X WILL BE TO THIS GUY

ohai.
are we discussing networking?

3:33 AM
not, pizza flavors

ooo. I like canadian bacon.

Then the virtual device removes that from the packet and forwards it as the source IP (with socket)

@NoTime win!

Hello there!

@Lucio Does it make sense more now?
Hi everyone

3:34 AM
@NoTime a lot!
I have No Time on my side :P
trying theories

@NoTime and @Lucio , do you guys do any bash scripting?

I need to pee though.. Ill step out on this conversation :)

@Lucio, I just viewed your profile. And by the looks of it, you do some bash/shell scripting. Right?

@NoTime oh gosh, you are too honest
@KingShimkus heh, dunno how but count with me :)

Huh?

3:38 AM
sorry

@Lucio 1, 2, 3? oh yep count on

@KingShimkus Yes, I do.
@Mateo oh

@KingShimkus Me personally I would rather run something in python and try to do what I could with doing commands inside python (not very efficient though)

@Mateo count on me?
thank you bro! :)

@KingShimkus I think you can ask your question now :)

3:41 AM
@Lucio and @NoTime... Well, if you don't mind... Do mind sending your .bashrc file over? I have been doing a lot of a bash scripting lately and I'm just curious what their .bashrc consists of.

@NathanOsman did you check that link out?

yeah, wait a second

@Lucio, thank you so much.

wat

@Whaaaaaat you seem like you would enjoy hacking right?

3:42 AM
@NoTime hm? mayyyyybe.
I may or may not have hacked into my middle school's servers and displayed text on every computer simultaneously.

@Whaaaaaat google-gruyere.appspot.com this is something made by google.. sandbox vulnerable website, with instructions how to harden, and to do attacks

followed by a BSOD

it's kinda fun

@Whaaaaaat, see I would do that.... But they blocked command-prompt. :(

@KingShimkus you should have just asked for someone how use Ubuntu ;)
what OS are you running?

3:43 AM
Ubunut 12.04 LTS
I know how to use Ubuntu....

@KingShimkus Physical Access can be a pain...

Chatroom seems more busy tonight
can you guys open this link and see some of the stuff I did ? google-gruyere.appspot.com/908393829432 or is it only me who can access it

Yeah it does...
@NoTime, I can open it.

You should work on that CSS though...

3:46 AM
@NoTime snrk

Thank you so much @Lucio

lol
no problem

It's not my page :) it is one I attacked

Thanks for the link.

3:49 AM
@NoTime I can't get it working :(

@Lucio the gruyere page?

no, the VM thing

are you using virtual box or vmware or another one?

sweet. my gruyere freezes chrome now :D

@NoTime the first

3:52 AM
heh there is so much fun stuff you can do @Whaaaaaat

XSS :D

@Lucio let me open virtual box and look at how I have stuff set up

There is something wrong between your idea an what I am doing

Ok so you are trying to host an webserver on your virtual machine "host C" for your "host B"?

@Whaaaaaat, do you have a job?

3:55 AM
@KingShimkus Nope.

@Whaaaaaat Loving your profile man, #voteWhaaaaaatForModerator

:D

@NoTime sorry
yep
The C is a guest

yeah sorry

and yeah, I want to make a "public" server for my internal network
but limited to my internal network ;)
I can do it for my host machine A, but no idea how to access it from others like B

4:00 AM
is your guest bridged?

O_O

Basically you want to put your guest onto your network instead of subnet (because it would be easier that way)

Right now I'm using NAT to have internet on the VM and host-only to have SSH access without port-forwading
what now?

I am not sure how to do everything (and am less familiar with networking in virtual box vs vmware).. I can look :)

I thought it was going to be simpler :(
what the...

4:07 AM
what did you do to the fiber cable?

heh, that is what am asking. Look the link

@Lucio it looks like you might just need to go into your network settings change it to Bridged, then give it an IP address (for your ACTUAL physical network)

Oh hell, this could work but for sure I'll break the VM

snapshot

Settings aren't saved as snapshot

4:09 AM
whatever the savestate one is
yeah it's snapshots :)
oh wait... I see
it's really only one thing if it doesn't work, just disable the "new" adapter

oh yeah, settings are also stored in the snapshot
@NoTime what??
which new adapter
I did nothing till now
I was trying the settings store thing

Keep Adapter 1, change Adapter 2 to Bridged

oh fuck, ok
bye bye host-only
cable connected?

yeah

done
I'm a bit scare now :S

4:14 AM
Im trying with my virtualbox too

we are twins :D
@NoTime that is a great source btw

the blog?

yep
> You will need to do more configuration when you need to forward traffic or expose services like a web-server to the outside world
I see ¬¬

I am trying to do nmap to see if I even have a new ip on my network :)

oh daemon, you're a fucking engineer
I fucking love you

@Whaaaaaat heh DoS?

@NoTime yep
is gone foreva :D

@Whaaaaaat do a directory transversal upload a py script in place of one that exists, it says congrats server was 0wned

@NoTime lol. let me think of how to do that.

you have to .... ruining fun (C)

4:23 AM
you make an account named .. then upload the file.. but I can't remember the main one's name it's something .gtl

ik
writing code.
make a new instance plz.

then quitserver, and when it loads back up it dies
before the numbers like 98012083180 or whatever type 'resetbutton'

make a new instance plz?

click that
then do the captcha.. i have flash and stuff disabled
so i have to close browser if I want a new session

my system wont show captcha either

4:26 AM
I gotta go right now though.. sorry guys
have to do some family stuff
0/

ok, thanks for all!
see you next time

nevermind what, he is gone, no time for that

hey everyone! Go to this: google-gruyere.appspot.com/913477467408
WARNING: MAY CRASH BROWSER

everyone: ../me..
that was.. silly

4:33 AM
i think it BSODs the system with IE.
nope. but it does completely crash firefox and eat up 4GB of RAM

yep
it doesn't crash it anyway
you still have the kill script option

on windows it does

oh
I thought we were talking about computers

LOL

I confused that furniture :P
what server does it run?

4:41 AM
?
Google's. I assume it's linux

nop
I am talking about the cheese
the gruyere server

Google.
I think Linux.

but what server?
something that use python

python.

the HTTP thing
kk

4:49 AM
my house's transformers are arcing. is that normal?

googling arcing
couldn't fetch enough info
@Whaaaaaat what does it means?

mini lightning bolts on the transformer ears.

Ahhh, for a moment I thought you were talking about toys xD

thats generally bad

the electric transformers
yeah, you better run from there before you house start burning
if you can, just if possible, unplug them

4:53 AM
the transformer on the pole in front of the house.

>>

these:

ahhh now we are talking about
nah, everything is fine

?
it's normal for it to arc?

I guess so if you live on australia

4:56 AM
united states

'nuff said

so is normal?

hell no.
