hmm, I can never remember the u code for the flaring eyes when I need it...

heheh
@Seth how goes it
ooo damn VPSes from RamNode now come with IPv6 /64 blocks o.o
thats a lot of IPs o.o

@ThomasW. it's going ok. Pretty hot and humid over here

@Seth meh it's hot over here too, was a bit humid today

@Mateo yeah, I sure do too :D

Many many curses upon Microsoft's head and a few curses upon Apple's head as well.
I've spent well over 3/4 hours trying to first get the backup Hard drive partitioned correctly, then setting up the backups on both the Toshiba and the Compaq and letting those run for long periods. Both of those work just fine. So, I go to plug it into the Mac and I forget that it's formatted as NTFS. Obviously, Mac doesn't recognize/read/write NTFS normally, so it just didn't do anything.
I realize it's NTFS and eject it, then plug it into the Toshiba to re-format it. What-a-ya-know, Mac has wiped THE ENTIRE FLIPPIN, CAKE TAKIN', GOAT-BALL EATING HARD DRIVE - WITHOUT EVEN ASKING ME! Great job tech companies. Way to work together.
So, now I wait another ~15/30 minutes while I try to recover the data/partitions. Otherwise I'm back to square 1.
Reason Numero Dos why I use Linux. For the most part, things like this don't happen.

1:18 AM
lol

ugh, that's so painful.
I've also heard plugging NTFS drives into Android tablets will reformat them FAT32, but that was back in the honeycomb days.

:P...I'm sorta recovering it...though I think I'll just wipe it an start over...don't want to risk a corrupted backup...
@Seth ugh....that sounds dreadful
@Seth You are le chameleon!

@Seth: assuming they even pick them up
a lot of devices lack mass storage support

true, but I'd assume it has a USB drive for mass storage support..

Les robes sont rouges!
Tu es riche!
L'enfant!

1:22 AM
@RPiAwesomeness Iguana -.-

Sorry... :(

translate: Les robes sont rouges! Tu es riche! L'enfant!
Dresses are red! You are rich! The child!
o..kay?
@RPiAwesomeness ;p

lol, I'm taking french

So I guessed ;)

@Seth ACTUALLY, the first one translates to "The dresses are red."
Not "Dresses are red"
Un chat!

1:24 AM
@RPiAwesomeness I blame Bing translate.

@Seth Ew! You use Bing? :P barfs

The bot uses Bing ;)

Vous êtes une femme. (anyone? @FEichinger?)
ah
But still, ew

shrug. It integrates well with their (SE's) .NET stuff.
And sometimes it even beats Google Translate.

lol
The search engine sucks, but they do have good pictures
Bother and confusicate plural thingy-wingys! I always forget to tack on that -s

1:27 AM
@RPiAwesomeness Huh?

lol, it means You are a woman...just judging by your pic

I'm waiting for a Hard Drive to recover data and I'm taking French at the same time...

I know what it means. I don't see how it is relevant. And, I am not.

oops.
I was going by your picture
And it isn't relevant

1:28 AM
lol, hi @FEichinger how's it going

Meh. Bit stressed out, and tired.

@FEichinger Sorry if I caused you any problems :(

2:03 AM
Was doing the linux course and found this funny. If you read each option from top to bottom it looks like the process was running from something (a zombie process maybe), got agitated from all the running and went to sleep. After that it was feeling refreshed ^^

lol
LFS101?

yes
the
give me a sec
chapter 17

I'm not that far in yet :/
got distracted by a bunch of things

found a couple of typos on the course but my biggest problem is understanding some questions that look ambiguous from my point of view, maybe because English is not my first language.
same here, started the same day that the course opened, trying to finish it today.

I've gotten new hardware yay! needed to rebuild my old server (Thrice! Boo!) and I still haven't gotten around to moving some stuff that was on less reliable hosting (meh!)
(switched from ubuntu to fedora, then back to ubuntu. Then my boot drive failed)

2:18 AM
wow bad, what hardware were you using

old atom mini itx box
it wasn't just the hardware
well other than me booting it off a cheap chinese usb drive

you reminded me of something that happened last year on a university on my country. Was "showing off" Ubuntu 12.04 to some friends and how easy it was to install as a server and set it up.

lol
this is primarily a torrent box/samba server

crashed in the installer, had to change the bios settings, then crashed when installing with tasksel, then crashed updating with aptitude

2:19 AM
I did not know where to hide

My system installs are mostly painless

after almost 6 months somebody told me the memory was bad, with all the problems and the public looking at me I forgot about memtest

learned that lesson, next time i'll memtest the hell out of anything.

this is my current linux desktop ;p
Would actually make an awesome home server too

2:22 AM
wow that looks awesome

fairly cheap too

the only thing I have close to that is a cubox
of course not much power compared to yours, I mostly use it to learn how to setup stuff like that
btw what hosting were you using

x86, passively cooled
oh, friend of mine used to run a VPS host
He got bought out, so I donno how long I'll have free hosting with him ;p

I have a godaddy hosting service, the only thing out of there is the dns
the dns in godaddy suck
very slow

now, if my phone company would do ipv6 ...

2:25 AM
I could help but I can only offer FTP with the hosting

Most of my stuff's on buyvm (hostingwise) and namecheap (one email account, and all my DNS)
meh, its fine, I can do it myself

nice nice

Its the actual moving
and I'm trying to grok docker since a ttrss appliance on it would be perfect for my needs

yeah understand the whole "moving" process

2:43 AM
this is why documentation is awesome

RichardI see many, many questions written by users having trouble installing Ubuntu in a dual-boot configuration on their UEFI-enabled PC, that are being marked as duplicates of Installing Ubuntu on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 (64-bit) System (UEFI Supported). This would appear to be a problem, because th...

"On this episode, we talk with Mark Shuttleworth, Founder of Canonical and the driving force behind Ubuntu. Mark covers why code isn’t the only contribution to open source projects that matters, the importance of staying focused on you project’s “main thing” and Ubuntu’s future with different categories of devices. In addition, Mark touches upon what he admires of OS X and Windows, his thoughts on wearables and virtual reality, the most entertaining mispronunciation of Ubuntu and much more."

WhaaaaaatFirst off, I know that my Meta posts are never accepted as good, so hear me out on this one. Q: Allow 2k+ users to suggest edits

WhaaaaaatEvery now and then, a user is unsure about an edit they make. For the under 2k rep users, this is great. It goes to the review board and is dealt with. However, users above 2k aren't given this privilege (yes, I said privilege) of having their edits peer-reviewed. I think that users above 2k s...

@fossfreedom Well, there's nothing about Unity that can be made worse anymore, so why would they change a thing? :P

They managed to turn me ("I just need something quick to install so I can reset frequently.") away from Unity.
The burn was more than justified.

shell

interesting. Never really warmed to shell personally - far too many clicks and I dont like the single app menu idea. Have got used to using Unity now.

I mostly do dev work anyway, so all I really need is a bash instance and a browser.
And for that, Unity nowadays is really just getting in the way.

sotoAfter running, $ ls -l /bin/ping -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 34740 Nov 5 2012 /bin/ping I wonder, why doesn't Ubuntu use capabilities (i.e. raw sockets) rather than setuid?

Temporary hackip hopefully.

4:10 PM
Is @EliahKagan around? Can you explain what is going on here? (I just saw it in the reopen queue)

@Seth Hi.

Hi.
Ahh, now I think I see what happened.
Jorge changed the title of the master question, but it didn't update in the OP's answer. So what appeared to be a totally unmentioned question was actually what the OP was linking.

oh! My bad!
does AU not update titles of linked things after the fact?

@JorgeCastro It seems updated for me now.
Maybe there was a lag in updating it and/or it was a caching issue.

sounds like the sort of thing they'd batch process and not realtime, so that makes sense

4:15 PM
That's what threw me off.

Oh.

It makes sense that the answer wouldn't update.

Yeah, that makes sense.

why are you people saying that it's a duplicated again?
in one, the user successfully installed but didn't show at right click, the other the PPA wasn't being added due the proxy (or whatever)

@Braiam The OP reported that as the solution. But on reflection I'm not sure we should've closed it as a duplicate. It might be off-topic "a problem that cannot be reproduced" (no details from the OP on how the proxy problem was solved). Or if they can provide details and want to make the question about that, they could add details of how they solved the proxy problem to their self-answer and it could be reopened.

4:25 PM
vote to delete then?
ah dang, too new

@JorgeCastro 3 downvotes fix that

or just flag it, no need to hurt the guy's rep

@JorgeCastro his only 5 are due an upvote in his question
but meh, flagged

Totally unrelated to that: Can this dupe-closed question have its answer merged to the master question? (I could edit the answer in the closed question so it say something about "upstream" near the top, rather than just "the steps," if that would be considered to make it coexist better alongside other answers offering different methods.)

agree

4:31 PM
+1

through the method proposed is not the "simple" one
is the "where anything that could go wrong, will go wrong" method

@EliahKagan done.

What do you all (or anyone with an opinion) think about whether or not I should edit the beginning of that answer to clarify that it's specifically an upstream kernel method? Would that be good, or would it just make the answer busier and more complicated?

5:00 PM
Someone beat you @jokerdino: softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/a/11083/86
@EliahKagan You mean that is doesn't work for downstream kernels?

@Seth Great. Saved me time :D

@Seth Besides the parts specific to using kernel.org, it does work for downstream kernels. Usually for downstream building I see advice to use apt-get build-dep ... and then download, configure, and build a binary package out of a source package and then install the binary package. (Of course it does not have to be done that way.)
@Seth But yeah. If I just said "upstream" at the top it would be confusing and maybe convey the wrong thing.

5:20 PM
@Seth is this a dupe?

@EliahKagan Seems like you answered it yourself ;)
@jokerdino lol
@AvinashRaj Looking.
@AvinashRaj I can't really test it right now, but you're probably right. Not a dupe.

Thanks...

@Tim Why are you asking AU specific questions on the main meta?
Yes, the whole site is currently borked.
SE decided to start using CloudFlare and have had nothing but explosions since, alas.

I had a bunch of issues today as well

@Seth I guess he assumed (as I do) that the whole site is on read-only

Ah, true. I'd edit your MSE post to say that.

@Seth have done, can you vote for reopen?

I don't see a reason.

Tim
okay

They're turning CloudFlare off for now, until they fix the bug that keeps causing this.

6:40 PM
i'ts some kind of distributed caching thing or something right? so random things that are broke are diffrent depending of where you are? I knew a friend that used it kept getting missing images randomly...

I'm not really sure what the underlying issue is, but CloudFlare is a CDN so I'm guessing we just aren't getting important files JS files (or whatever)
Should be fixed in 5 minutes, they said.

Wonderful.

Hi @Whaaaaaat. I tried to upvote your meta question, but I kept getting error dialogues ;p

@Whaaaaaat yes/no, they renamed it to help center.

Tim
do you mean like for the main site?

No. For AU.

You mean, about how to use AU?

6:47 PM
It could be a repository of the biggest problems with ubuntu.

About the site itself?
@Whaaaaaat I'm not following..

Not how to use it, the actual QUESTIONS about Ubuntu that are asked over and over and over

hey
anyone know the calendar API?

Q: How to add arabic keyboard to Galaxy S3

Sido KoukiI have a Galaxy S3 and I have just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on it. I am having a problem adding the Arabic keyboard. I've tried many times to add the Arabic keyboard from the keyboard layout but it's always closed by itself. How can I add it? Also, why isn't there a terminal?

What.
That is so off-topic AND on-topic that "I can't even..."

@Seth Bottom post for Bleachbit. Seems like an ad to me.

@Whaaaaaat Oh, yes, I see that. You can link directly to answers with the <share> link under them ;)

I thought that increases some count for the answer though?
I'll do that from now on then.

6:58 PM
@Whaaaaaat nope.

Thanks @Seth! This is why I voted for you as mod.

Anyway, on looking at it, I don't think it is spam, just a really bad answer.
@Whaaaaaat :)

It just SEEMS spammy.

Yes, it does.
