11:46 AM
room topic changed to deadEarth: The Chargenning: Where characters are rolled but never played [deadearth] [lulz]
in RPG General Chat, 5 hours ago, by lisardggY
No game does "sudden, meaningless death" better than deadEarth. Usually even before gaming starts.
in RPG General Chat, 5 hours ago, by lisardggY
No, I do not recommend deadEarth. I do recommend reading the review and laughing hysterically.

It always surprises me that this book was ever published.

So, I start by rolling Moves:
2d6

It feels like the sort of system a bunch of teenagers would spend months writing out in painstaking detail.

And Resiliency (1d6+3).
1d6

11:49 AM

Strength starts at 0.
Ageing is... d%, apparently.
2d10

I'm 42 years old. Moves -3, Skills 800 + d6x10, Strength +0, Resiliency -1, and 3d6 radiations.
> Unfortunately, age tends to catch up with even the strongest of us. No one ages gracefully on deadEarth. Every year after the age of 40 apply a -1 modifier to either resiliency, strength, or moves.
I'ma drop resiliency by 2; it seems the most liable to be able to take the hit.
Height is 48 + 6d6, in inches.
6d6

65'' tall, or 5'5''.

11:55 AM
Ok, old and short.
The review had some shortcut for rolling skills, didn't it?

For weight, I roll 5d6 and look at this table which was miraculously omitted from the 2nd edition.
3
5d6

17, so weight = height x 2. I'm 130 lbs.
Yes, I seem to recall that.

There should be a web-based ability-generator, instead of rolling 2d6 100 times.

No link to it.

11:59 AM
Just a teasing promise.

Bah.
Oh, height/weight influences stats.
+2 Moves, +0 Resiliency, -1 Strength.

So we're at -1 Strength, right?

My current stats: Moves 2, Resiliency 3, Strength -1; Skills 800 + d6x10; 3d6 radiations.

So far, at "barely able to carry own weight". Nice.

My max carrying weight is 30 + (Str x 10) lbs.
So... 20 lbs.
Now it's time for skills.

12:04 PM
Ah.

So I'm rolling 2d6 per skill, but I'm just looking for 2s and 12s.
8d6

None.
8d6

None.
8d6

12:06 PM

So my.... 12th skill down... is a natural ability.
8d6

Zip.
8d6

Zilch.
8d6

12:07 PM

So close, but that's across a pair of 2d6s.

I'll look up the 12th in the list.

(That's skills 21 through 24.)
8d6

Skills 25 through 28, nada.
8d6

12:08 PM

Nothing in 29 through 32.
8d6

Ok, that's a natural ability in Broadcasting.

Naturally.

> Broadcasting. Knowledge of waves and how they are used to transmit information through the air and cable. Includes knowledge of electronic encryption and decryption coding. Use this skill to broadcast secured and unsecured audio and video and to intercept such messages. Prereq: Electronics

12:10 PM
@NokImchen Hi!

hi @BESW

You're welcome to hang out here, but if you're looking for tabletop role-playing discussions the main room will probably be more productive.
I'm rolling a gag character here for a hilariously terrible system‌.

is there a room where experience scientist help console young students like me to decide which field i should go for PhD?

There's the Academia stack exchange site: academia.stackexchange.com
Which has a chatroom where people might be able to help. Also, depending on the field, you could find experts in physics.stackexchange.com, biology.stackexchange.com,. etc.

Good luck! I'm sorry we're not in a position to be of more material assistance.

12:14 PM

Skills 37 through 40 incoming.
8d6

Another red herring.

Nothin' interesting there.
8d6

12:15 PM
Woo!
That's 44, right?

I think so.
8d6

No enchilada.
8d6

Natural inability in Haggle.
> Haggle. Skill in negotiating a trade of goods. Roll your haggle against another player's haggle to negotiate a trade. Whoever wins gets the better end of the deal. A single trade may consist of many haggle rolls. Prereq: Appraise

12:16 PM
Now for 49 through 52.
8d6

Whoo!

52 is an ability!

Natural ability in Intuition.

53-56:

12:17 PM
> Intuition. Your ability to generally make sense of the world around you, to understand nonverbal communication and foreign languages, to sense the danger level of a situation, and to read the apparent intent of others. Prereq: Senses.

8d6

I'm on a roll!
55th is inability, 56th is ability.

Natural inability in Jury-rig. Natural ability in Martial Arts.

57 through 60:
8d6

12:18 PM

Nnyup. 61-64:
8d6

Boo. 65-68:

Getting close to the end, now.

8d6

12:19 PM

Ooer. What's 65?

Navigate.

69-72:
8d6

Threes are wild.

12:20 PM
Hm?

Lots of threes.
Nevermind.
Go on.

Oh. Yes.
73-76:
8d6

77-80:
8d6

12:21 PM
81-84:
8d6

85-88:
8d6

89-92:
8d6

12:22 PM
What's 91?

> WS Blade.
Use swords, axes and knives

93-96:
8d6

Ooh, close.
And lastly, 97-100:
8d6

12:23 PM
Ok.

Close again!

So our guy has a natural ability in Broadcasting, Navigation, Intuition, Martial Arts and Blade fighting.

42 years old, 5'5'' and 130 lbs. Moves 2, Resiliency 3, Strength -1; Skills 800 + d6x10; 3d6 radiations.

And a natural inability in Haggling and Jury-rigging.

I think I'm some kind of itinerant post-apocalyptic Walter Cronkite.

12:26 PM
Kung-fu Cronkite.

So, I can add do one of these things now:
Add 1d6 to any one of age/height/initiative/max carrying weight/moves/resiliency/shielding/weight.
Roll 2d6x10 and gain that many skills points.
Gain the ability to purchase extra radiation rolls at 10 skill points per roll.
I think I should add to either Str or Moves.

Ooh, age. Let's add to age.
*cough*
Yes, Strength, probably.

1d6

Right now he can barely carry a suit of clothes.

12:29 PM
Str of 2!

Woo!

I can carry... 50 lbs.

Wait, but isn't a strength of 3 equivalent to a Schwarzenegger?

Yes.

*sigh*.

12:30 PM
Apparently Ahnold can carry 60 lbs before being encumbered.

Adding a whole d6 to a score that usually ranges from 0 to 3 is silly, but hey, that's probably the least of our problems here.

Skills now.
d6

Joy. I have 810 skill points.

But you can use the points for radiations instead, right?

12:33 PM
No, I chose to add 1d6 to Str instead.

Ah, I see, yes.
I see now that the "goal" of the game is to gain Renown for your character. Which makes sense, except for the fact that in addition to completing quests, you can gain renown by being mentioned on the publisher's website, or from mutations. Of course.

Of course.
So, given the goal is Renown, what should I go for in skills?

Play to your strengths, I guess. Start with the abilities.

Hmm. Not too hard, it looks like.

Martial Arts needs Brawling, so that's a place to start.
4d6 in Brawling lets you take Martial Arts.
6d6 in Martial Arts will give you another Move.
So that's 100 points right there.

12:37 PM
Is it? Don't you get the first two dice for free?

Do you? Must have missed that.

The guy's blog said something like it, but I'm not seeing it in the manual.
> Remember that list of 100 skills I mentioned? You start with all the ones you qualify for at 2d6. But most of them have prerequisites so they start at 0d6 until you have 4d6 in the prereq, at which point you qualify for them and they go up to 2d6.

"qualify for"?

Meet the preqs for?

Which is every skill that has no prereq?

12:42 PM
Aye?
That's how the blog makes it sound.
So, I need Brawling to go from 2d6 to 4d6, then Martial arts from 2d6 to 6d6. That's 60 points.
Now, for Broadcasting... that's got a pretty big tree but I think Intuition is a side branch on it.
Math -> Physics -> Electronics -> Broadcasting.

Senses -> Intuition.

20 points in three different skills is 60, total of 120 spent so far.
Aw. Still, I like that.
Senses 4d6 (20 points).

And WS Blade and Navigation are no pre-req.

Let's bring everything we've mentioned so far up to 4d6. +20 Martial Arts, +20 Senses, +20 Blade, +20 Nav, +20 Broadcasting.
Spent 240 out of 800.

Ok, he's a tech- and media-savvy martial artist/blademaster.

12:48 PM
I wanna go for Bemuse.

What synergizes with that?

(I can stun people with blather.)

Oh, definitely.

It builds off Senses/Intuition/Reason.

Excellent for an on-air personality.

12:49 PM
Exactly!
So that's another 40 points to pump Reason and Blather Bemuse to 4d6 each.

Bemuse.
How about Troubador?

Okay, Charisma seems reasonable as a buy-in.

Weight Training is apparently the simplest way to increase Strength.

20 points for Charisma, 20 for Streetwise, 20 for Troubador. 340 spent.
+40 points in Weight Training, then. 380 spent... I feel like this stuff is way too cheap.

Is he a walker? Horse-rider? Motorcyclist?

12:54 PM
Bah. Let's skip to the radiation.

Yay!

3d6 radmen, I think?

Dicebot doesn't do d1000, I guess.

3d6

12:55 PM
15 radiations. Let's go.
umm, 12.

That's, what, 3d10?
3d10

> 677 Drool. You are a slobbering fool. cost: none. range: self. effect: binary.
2 of 12:
3d10

> 388 Animality.
You know the beast inside you, and so does every other animal you come in contact with. All domesticated animals become wild around you, and any wild animals you encounter will try to attack you immediately and before all others. All beast handling and beast ride skill rolls are at least difficult for you.
cost: none. range: self. effect: binary

12:58 PM
...shame. I was planning to have him ride a horse.
3rd of 12:
3d10

3
10
8

Navigate is again a natural ability.

> 308 Sense of direction. Navigate is now a natural ability. cost: none. range: self. effect: binary

4th of 12:
3d10

3
10
8

12:59 PM
What, again?

[blink]
If you roll a binary radiation more than once, reroll.

Reroll?

3d10

169 Flaming death.
You burst into flames in 3D6 hours killing yourself and doing 4D6 damage to anyone within 20 feet of you. cost: none. range: self. effect: binary
Woo!
