I hate it when someone leaves a link only answer on a post where I have answer, because it makes feel odd about commenting.. :(

@gandalf3 Sounds too broad, I was thinking a more specific keyword anyone could pick up

ah
okay then

12:33 AM
@gandalf3 are they teh same answers?
is there a standard comment for telling someone not to leave just link answers?

Not really
I usually say something like "link only answers are discouraged", etc.
@Vader From what I can tell.. The blog post is more detailed, of course.

@gandalf3 don't feel odd about commenting about it. If anything, it should be less awkward since you're asking them to step up since you are putting in effort, they should too
I think it's more awkward calling someone out for not putting in effort you haven't put in
I do feel weird about downvoting a link only answer when I've answered though

I already commented on it btw
@gandalf3 I too think that's a little awkward since you already are involved with that question.

Okay

12:51 AM
@gandalf3 in your liquid answer you have a piece of water, but it is jut a plane? How does cycles know how to render it?

@Vader It's attached to the glass, but it actually doesn't make any difference (If I select it and separate it, it comes out the same)

weird, how come? its just a plane

@Vader Basically, when a ray hits the plane and is refracted (there is a slight chance that it could be reflected), the ray bends (at an angle according to the IOR) until it encounters the next surface (the inside of the glass). Because the inside of the glass has a material with an ior of 1.09 (1.45/1.33), it gets "unbent" to the point it was before entering the liquid until it hits the outside of the glass, where it gets "unbent" the same amount as a ray entering the glass.

nods along
I see

Rather than thinking of objects/substances (glass, water), think of interfaces (glass/air, water/air, water/glass)

1:00 AM
okay

It's the same reason why you can render a pool with an ocean modifier by just putting planes around and under the ocean.

Oh, that makes more sense now

@vader @iklsr @charles @gandalf Hey Guys, check this out!

Just the other day, I saw on GizMag.com a story about how the company H3D had developed a handheld radiation camera containing a cadmium-zinc-tellurium, room-temperature gamma ray detector of unprecedented precision that's much lighter and half the cost of cryogenic devices that lays a gamma-ray map over an image of an area. The device is designed to give nuclear power plants a faster, cheaper way to detect and map dangerous hot spots and leaky fuel rods using a camera that maps radiation in real time. Here's the article:

Q: How to move object to a fixed position using hotkeys?

DokkatWhen I move an object using, for example, g x 0 has no effect at all. Seems like that kind of shortcut works relative to the current transformation. How can I use the same, except modifying its global position instead?

Q: My Objects won't render

SkeleCrafterWell, I make Minecraft Animations and I was moving from Blender 2.69 to Blender 2.70. The version move was successful. It rendered properly n' stuff. I was playing around with nodes and render layers. After a while I took a render. and all of a sudden every thing did not render. Only the things I...

Q: Exporting UV coordinates by face elements

spearmunkieI'm trying to write my own export script, and I'm not sure how to reference the uv coordinates as an element array, similar to how .obj format works (ie. you have a list of all uv coordinates "vt s t" and each face selects the correct index). I looked at previous threads on similar things, but th...

@iklsr @vader @charles @gandalf ok, I give up...why do people sometimes type with random capitalized letters in words? like CoDeManX or iKlsR? is this some kind of meme? I can't find any explanation on the net.

no idea
I just use it to separate words.

really? it seems to be some kind of hacker related thing or something
oh, yeah, I do that too, but when it gets really random, I don't get it
I was wondering if it's some kind of hacker subculture meme

Nope.
iNameVariablesAndFunctionsLikeThis
but that's about it.

yeah, I do ThomBlairIII but iKlsR does it all the time, whenever he types a random name for something, he puts random capitals in it...I noticed he does it for all random names...
like, if you download any image he's posted, it has names like these: pzAty.png, doOSU.jpg
I found it...it's called "mixed case font" or probably mixed case typing
actually, I'd like to have the ability to do it, but I never learned to do it when I learned touch typing and my pinky fingers don't want to capitalize letters that fast
it'd be a really handy ability for touch typing passwords! I'm jealous!

Q: Copying objects in 3D view along with nodes and other stuffs

JimmyJommywhile I am trying to copy a object (with nodes) (e.g. cube) to another blend file. Can anyone tell me how to copy the object with nodes and other properties? Or copy the ...

does anybody know how to import one blend file into another or merge blend files?

3:58 PM
@ThomBlairIII you can append a scene/object/mesh

ah hah...thanks, I'll look that up
@CharlesL linking too it appears...youtube.com/watch?v=jIJ5n21J3EY
thanks!

yeah
but if you link, you can't edit the imported object
you'll have to edit the source .blend

@CharlesL in_pytohn_you_shoudl_name_them_like_this

@Vader yeah, that's the convention.
I still prefer camelCase, though.
but I do use the regular python naming conventions when programming in python: github.com/charles-l/video2gif/blob/master/video2gif/…

only classes use camecase

4:11 PM
I use camel case in java, C/C++ and Lua.
I'm not quite sure whether it's convention to use it in lua
but it's my default convention, so that's what I use

it is for java and Cs

@vader @charles hey guys, why do some questions show up here from "Proog" and some from "Sintel"?

they are bots
SIntel for main, Proog for meta

proog posts meta stuff
yeah

what is meta stuff?
is meta short for something?

meta is for discussing stuff about main

how is it decided what questions are main & which are meta? is it the tags?

Q: Textures in cycles are black

Maik Klein I created a bridge, created the uvs and created a material with a texture in cycles. I can see the textured result when I set the viewport shading to material, but when I try to render the image, the material just appears to be black. Any idea why this could happen?

omg...Elephants Dream is the most archetypal illustration of emo consciousness I've seen in quite a while
:P
sick theme
skillful animation etc, but not healthy
Sintel was equally well made, but similarly disturbed...who comes up with these themes?

Q: Blender object material wont accept texture

NickI recently bought a model pack from video copilot but when I got it and tried to import the .objs into blender the object renders black and the texture isn't showing in the material(the sphere representing the material is blends default gray color).

5:09 PM
I don't think sintel was disturbed

5:25 PM
@ThomBlairIII hmm
Firstly, I don't name my files like that, imgur does that.
Secondly, some do it for style I guess but mine is an old alias. When I created my first online account years ago, I used an alias Kewl Luser.
iKlsR = i am Kewl Luser

@iKlsR why the uppercase 'R' then?

@CharlesL swag

lol

iKlsr looked a bit sad

LOL

It was originally iKluser
but too long to type

hahaha
it looks funny too
and it looks like an apple product

this was about 12 years ago

KlsR

the iPod came out in 2001...

It would feel too weird without the i.

@iKlsR when do we downvote meta posts?

5:31 PM
@CharlesL Yh, I wasn't thinking anything about apple at that time.

when we disagree?

KlsR isn't that bad...
@iKlsR uh-huh
I think you're secretly an apple fanboy.

@Vader Upvote for agree, downvote for disagree

okay

And you just put up a hostile front so no one suspects you of it.

Q: Overuse of images in answers

ideasman42Some answers are including images just to show a menu-item. eg: original post I'm concerned that doing this too much makes posts harder to update (if blender changes), where: 3D View Header -> Mesh -> Clean up -> Fill Holes ... would do just as well. ??

??
what about it?

Do you disagree with it?

yes

depends on which menu
There really isn't a name for all the menus/panels/views
and there are menus all over the place

yeah

5:34 PM
If the question is at a beginner level, I think you should post a screenshot.
If not, the text is fine.

I always post screenshots

@Vader same

@Vader Well, drop your opinion there. Tho, 2 mods agree so I doubt it will change anything but as I said, it's a personal choice. However, it makes no sense to clutter the post with a 640 * 480 image whereas a single line of text would just as well suffice.

b/c n00b might look at the same question in the future

@Vader Yes, and the main reason being that in the future, the menu option(s) might be moved.

5:35 PM
@iKlsR well that's just stupid, I should not have to worry about that. But the text version would become irrelevant then as well
@iKlsR How does a 640x480 "clutter the screen" would you rather see whitespace?

Blender is constantly under development, I don't think it's a good idea to cement menu options or parts of the interface in images. It would only lead to more confusion as one would assume that since it is an image it is there.

@iKlsR I think if people get confused, they'll drop a comment. Then someone will be able to edit it.

@Vader As I said, personal choice but it will most likely be stripped if need be. Just use text.

but the same would go for the text version

@Vader text is easier to edit.

5:37 PM
@Vader You're not understanding.

I do not plan on doing version control on my answers

If you see a line of text and an image, which are you more likely to believe?

@Vader but someone else might.

@iKlsR neither/either
@CharlesL well they can get rid of the image then if they want to,

@Vader No need to. If someone sees it in the future, it can be updated.

5:40 PM
check mate

@vader I just didn't like the super sad ending to Sintel...the baby dragon at the end didn't really make up for all the heartbreak that made the whole plot up till then. But I really liked the beginning when Sintel and her dragon were playing & happy...that was awesome!

its was by far the best BF movie so far
ToS had a bad story

I just am already taking my max dosages of antidepressants and apparently there isn't any more powerful antidepressant out there for me yet, so I like to stay focused on happy things

oh jeez

ToS also was pretty sad etc. and the plot was interesting in some ways, like from a sci-fi point of view, but it did have a bit to be desired in terms of dialogue and plot coherence

A: Copying objects in 3D view along with nodes and other stuffs

iKlsRI am assuming you are talking about material nodes etc. If you append the object into the new file, it will bring over anything attached to it automatically such as materials and any node setups associated with it. Use ShiftF1 or go to File > Append and navigate into the blend file as you would a...

Q: Simple UV Mesh Unwrapping Scale issue

user3049527I'm having problems using the UV mapping in blender 2.67. ZCoderHow should I deal with the horizon in a scene? I have tried blocking it with fog,a hill, or even water but they all tend to look tacky. showing none of the sky tends to make it look flat. what should I do to make the horizons look nice instead of just cutting off into the sky?

in python you mean?

@Qwertieϟ just convention
unless they're constants

thats the proper nameing convention for python

in which case it's all caps
or a class, in which case the first letter is capitalized.
