Q: node.js Syslog server recording to ms-sql database

ChrisGNZI am just starting to learn node.js. I'm average at Javascript, still getting my head around closures. I am really struggling to get my head around the node.js event driven programming paradigm. This 43 line program is one of my first attempts and is designed to listen for Syslog messages on...

@syb0rg Have they tried giving programmers various drugs and then testing their ability to implement fizz-buzz?
5

@retailcoder - yes they did.
I believe it is another medication-related application called obamacare.
3

lol. I thought you were going to say "they called it "
So the conclusion is what? Over-engineered solutions come from sober programmers? Caffeine-driven coders yield the shittiest code? Smoked-up ones get it to work in creative ways, and give 'em LSD and they'll leave out all semicolons?
Hi @WayneConrad! Nice bio :)

1:37 AM
all I see are stars
@WayneConrad must be a friend of @rolfl's looks like the same kind of photography
and very nice Bio
lol

1:50 AM
@Malachi keep up the no-smoking; and congrats, 6 weeks is awesome! I haven't had a cigarette since Dec.31, and haven't strangled anyone too... yet.
2

@retailcoder I am hoping that I will have more money by not smoking, but somehow I still don't have any money..... how does that work?

You're spending it all on coffee ;-) (and heating)
For the record, it does not matter how much you save, and how frugal you are, you will never have enough money ;-)

Q: how to code a program using java inheritance in a class Time using tickBySecond, tickByMinute and tickByHour with a continious time

@ChrisW I upvoted (and retagged with ) your question, looks good (except I'm not too warm about the s_ prefix for static members.. not too warm about static members either, but I believe you have a good reason for these static fields to be ..static. Right?
@StackExchange that's one Hell of a title.

@retailcoder, Thanks! Been working on that bio for almost (dang) 40 years. Glad you liked it.
@Malachi :) I don't know rolfi, but he seems like a fine critter.

@WayneConrad - welcome ... nice to know I'm not the most mature primate around ;-)

Q: Please correct my program that will output continious time

@Malachi Say you spent $8/day on cigarettes. Put $8/day in your savings account! :)
2

@Malachi FWIW, I never smoked, and I never had too much money either ;-)
And, technically, non-smokers have less money, because they are retired for longer.

Just noticed, @Jamal's user Id is #22222. Yes, that's out of the blue.

Like, I hope you're not using your CR user ID as a PIN anywhere! OTOH an ID like that is going to be quite handy once CR is on the SEDE.

@user___999_: RTFM!! 6 minutes between duplicate off-topic posts!

I was gonna say. Is it always like that?

Like what?

2:18 AM
More bad questions than good?

nah

Nope. We mostly get good ones, but CR seems to be quite active today. Good thing I was around to moderate.

I'm glad this is a statistical anomaly. And thanks, Jamal.

Something happened with traffic on the site recently though. Up until recently we consistently had > 13K visits/day, now down to <7.5K

It could be the holidays. I'm not too sure. I can view other stats, but I cannot disclose that information.

2:20 AM
^^ don't mention it then. teaser! :p
can you disclose if you can see that in a chart over time?

Just so you're aware, that's all.
I haven't looked in detail yet. But whatever can be revealed, may be revealed in our next review, whenever that may be.

I hope our next review will be a graduation announcement :)
@rolfl critter
I just like that word. Reminds me of the sheeps in Warcraft II :)

@retailcoder - We need more high-rep users still.... as much as the cleanup has helped, I think only svick has crossed 10K
@WayneConrad - thanks for killing some zombies, by the way.

My guess is that voting can still hold us back. That may be our only issue, or it may not be. We'll just have to wait for the Meta post.

@rolfl you'll be there before I blow my 32 candles in June.

2:27 AM
@rolfl: 200 is getting very close, too.

indeed

You're welcome. I noticed the call to action on meta. Sounded like fun. I need more targets. Thinking of looking for SO [ruby] questions that I can flag to be moved here :)
5

Also, assuming I cross 10K, I will make it only 4 active +10K users . palacsint last answered a question last october, and winston is essentially in the wind.
loki, svick, 200 and me would be it.

@retailcoder I just have to make sure that my wife doesn't find out about it...lol jk
@retailcoder the Money I put into the savings account by not smoking I mean...lol

Is that enough to 'graduate' a site when only 4 people can access moderator tools, and only 1 can protect, and no-one can edit wiki

2:33 AM
^^ you mean 4 mod tools, 5 protect + wiki-edit
Hello @syb0rg!

Hey

Meta-CoD post has 1023 views. 1 more and it'll be an actual 1K! ...there!
^^ I need to work on my OCD.

Yeah, we may still not be ready for elections the number of high-rep users we have now. But as long as this site remains active, we'll stay online.

How is this possible?
89
A: Mutually exclusive properties

palacsintJust a quick note: a Status (or ConnectionStatus) enum with ONLINE and OFFLINE values would be more readable here.

@WayneConrad Hello there! Haven't seen you around these parts before.

2:41 AM
@rolfl if I remember well, that one made it to the top network questions, and it was featured in the newsletter.

@syb0rg Hello! First time here. I started out looking for potato chips. How I got from potato chips to here, I don't know, but it seems comfy here.
9

Jamal would have converted that to a comment (except jamal has only 20% of palacsint's rep).
3
hmmmm 30%

@Jamal I think the last comment by @WayneConrad should be pinned.
We need a new pinned comment

done

@retailcoder How does one come across the pinning powers?

2:45 AM
One 'owns' the room.

^^ that. Or 'owns' a diamond

Can there be multiple owners?

Not that I want to be one, jw

I can appoint anyone as a co-owner if they want.
@rolfl now there's 3 full rows of users with >5K. codereview.stackexchange.com/…

2:48 AM
@Jamal Why is this question locked?

@syb0rg Honored! Have some chips.

Wayne, you're new here, and yet you inspire a meme....

A simple "s" ruins it all?

i just noticed that I don't know if it works or not.....

@Malachi I just tested it out, you theory is correct.

@syb0rg probably something to do with the Secure Socket Layer and this Chatroom or the engine they use

FWIW the "HTTPS" is crossed striken-through in my Chrome address bar

@retailcoder Meaning it isn't "secure"?

I guess so
or is it striked-through?

Meta.SO that is.

make sure you research MSO before you post there, they downvote dupes like there's no tomorrow.

@Malachi - ever figue out why you make it XML ? (Someone just upvoted that answer).

isn't it grammar?

@syb0rg - it makes a big difference to the meaning ..... Your going down is about the time I 'went down', like 'your trip to Texas', but You're going down is about the time I am going to in the future .....

@rolfl I think that it had something to do with what you said about it being the only way to take one answer out or something, I haven't had a chance to look at that code lately i might get a chance here tonight, I have to work on those sites in Production, i have to put fixes back in them every time the main application is updated, package deal sort of thing

3:31 AM
@rolfl I know. Blame my robot side.

Your robot side doesn't have a spell-checker?
3

he's linux not Microsoft
probably uses British English too

Ah. No wonder I didn't see the squiggly red line.

@retailcoder nobody caught that like you did.

@Malachi damn you Americans, you say "British English" like it was copied from the Americans..... You should be saying "probably uses English too, instead of American English"
3

3:33 AM
Thou shall speaketh thy true English

@Jamal It's in alpha.

@rolfl or Proper English instead common English?

@Malachi - fair point ;-)

even though English is a melted language, and it continues to melt

This must be what it's like to be in an EL&U chatroom...

3:34 AM
let's face it, in Britain there's Scottish, English, Cockney, Yorkshire, Scouse, and all of those are English, yet unintelligible.

I read "Scottish, English, Cocky, .."

Isn't there Latin somewhere in there too?

uh
English roots are Germanic, not Latin...
------------------------------------------ OFF TOPIC --------------------------------------------

@Malachi - if the need is to have just a single-string output, there are better ways in t-sql to do it than de-xml'ing the XML.

@Malachi and that feels weird?

i am not sure that is why I was turning it into XML. I am going to run the query again when I am done doing my updating stuff
@retailcoder it's been a while

Yeah. I haven't hit vote-cap in a while, too.

things have changed slightly about me since I quit smoking

all of the above?

You don't get frost-bite?

@rolfl very true, I quit before the cold stuff came, like 4-5 weeks ago
@rolfl Remind me about that XML thing on Monday, I have to do more digging, i have to find a valid BondID so I can run the query in SSMS

@rolfl I am agree with @Malachi and Gareth on the close-vote. @Malachi, I don't agree with "I am agree" though :p

@retailcoder i don't think I can edit that, but give me a link to the question..... I dont' remember which it is

@rolfl, I am agree with Gareth on this one. — Malachi Jan 3 at 14:38

well, you already pinged him :)

I just forgot a word in the comment telling you that you can't be a Nazi because you are Canadian. should say something like "eh, I don't know @retailcoder... " you think that is serious enough?

@retailcoder Can you use Valgrind to prove your point?

The leak is proven already. But fixing the bug doesn't add business value. Go figure.
fixing a bug only adds business value when the bug is filed by an end user
and then they complain "why is this app so slow"

@retailcoder Do you have a link to customer support for your company? I need to send them an email about a slow application.

that was more to measure how bad I thought the question was and not really saying it should be deleted, I forgot my <sarcasm></sarcasm> tags

I have silver-badge for reviewing First Posts ... the queue is building, I am happy to go in there and review,but maybe there is another keener out there?

I have a silver badge in there also. is there some waiting to be reviewed?

Only 4 things ;)

Is it even possible to have a question in this language that is on-topic? codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/26648/…

yes

Yes... although readability and Brainfuck are an interesting combination. :-)

Brainfuck's formal "parent language"[edit]
Except for its two I/O commands, brainfuck is a minor variation of the formal programming language P′′ created by Corrado Böhm in 1964. In fact, using six symbols equivalent to the respective brainfuck commands +, -, <, >, [, ], Böhm provided an explicit program for each of the basic functions that together serve to compute any computable function. So in a very real sense, the first "brainfuck" programs appear in Böhm's 1964 paper – and they were programs sufficient to prove Turing-completeness.
Brainfuck is an esoteric programming language noted for its extreme minimalism. The language consists of only eight simple commands and an instruction pointer. It is a Turing tarpit, designed to challenge and amuse programmers, and was not made to be suitable for practical use. It was created in 1993 by Urban Müller. Language design Urban Müller created brainfuck in 1993 with the intention of designing a language which could be implemented with the smallest possible compiler, inspired by the 1024-byte compiler for the FALSE programming language. Several brainfuck compilers have been ma...
@Jamal And I can't star the comment either

Theoretical star!

the wiki says that Brainfuck is a Turing tarpit
A Turing tarpit (or tar-pit) is any programming language or computer interface that allows for flexibility in function but is difficult to learn and use because it offers little or no support for common tasks. The phrase was coined in 1982 by Alan Perlis in Epigrams on Programming In any Turing complete language, it is possible to write any computer program, so in a very rigorous sense nearly all programming languages are equally capable. Turing tarpits show that theoretical ability is not the same as usefulness in practice. Turing tarpits are characterized by having a simple abstract ma...

I wonder if rolfl could review this? :-)

if reviewing BrainFuck code is off topic then I would say that anything coded for amusement would be off-topic, if they were trying to shorten the code as much as possible and not trying to follow some sort of format that would be different
but the OP was only asking about how to DRY the code in a specific location

Q: Clock Widget in Android

jiduvahSo I have built a clock widget. It basically has to hands and displays a time, either the current time or a selected time. There is another option which tells the clock if it should move around as the time does. Is this a good way to do this? It seems to work well in my app but I was wondering ...

Q: Review this screenshot scaling code for readability

he isn't asking to fix the code, it sounds to me like it works @Bobby, OP just wants to be able to do it would Repeating code. the language itself is obscure, but think about a non-computer person looking at HTML, Javascript, C#, Java, VB, Python, etc. they are all obscure to a non-programmer type person. the language is obscure, but this code is not obscure in terms of the language. — Malachi 24 secs ago

It looks like I should untag the rest, too. That's the only one with actual Brainfuck to review, while the rest are mostly interpreters.

@rolfl someone just tried to edit one of your answers

Looks good.

oh I reject it and you go ahead and approve it.....

fixed a bug ;-)

4:28 PM
I didn't know if it was right or not, I figured it was something you should have edited, that is why I rejected it. but since you are ok with it!!

Hey monkey, can you review Brainfuck code? ;-)

mmmm ... brainfuck

I realize now that since there's only one actual program for that tag and COBOL, they'll eventually die if they don't get tagged with someone else. On the other hand, there are only 55 Brainfuck questions on SO.

good edit on that Python Question @Jamal

Which one?

4:41 PM
@Jamal nope, I don't plan on touching that (brainfuck).... it is, aready, and I don't want to make it worse.

(flags homepage as offensive)
hello!

waits for someone to start a bounty for the lulz

which one? which one? you just slow down and let me edit some when I get home tonight!!!

Alright. :-) I'm still trying to slow down on the editing.

Q: ASCII table in Brainfuck

TyiloI made my first Brainfuck program today, which prints the numbers 0-255 and the corresponding character. I was wondering if I could improve my program, as I'm repeating myself a lot (e.g. 3 x copy & paste "comparer" function): max == 255 LF == 10 space == 32 '0' == 48 '9' == 57 ':' =...

Heads-up: I'm not going to refund that bounty.

@Malachi I think you've just thrown 100 rep into outer space.

probably. maybe we will get some people to actually look at it though. doesn't it show up in more places now?

4:58 PM
probably...

can we get it featured on StackOverflow somehow? like so they will see it?
I like the idea of Brainfuck, I just don't have that much time on my hands, that's why I don't wear a watch.
@retailcoder hopefully my last 3 answers will make up for the Bounty. 4 accept votes would almost do it

5:16 PM
@Jamal I think you should restore the tags to the questions where a brainfuck interpreter is being implemented.

@200_success: Okay. I thought I was going overboard at first since only one question has actual Brainfuck.

In this case, it serves as a topic tag, like . It helps attract people with expertise or interest in brainfuck.

Alright.
@200_success: Just the interpreters, or all of them that originally had the tag?

The Turing Tarpit idea is interesting. Definitely makes sense. Probably also why it's possible to build something like the Raspberry Pi now, as opposed to, say, 30 years ago. There just wasn't much in the way of easily adaptable infrastructure back then.

@Jamal What else did you change?

5:25 PM
@200_success: Nothing else, except for other usual edits.

Moderators...... always changing things....

ahem

@200_success ?????

We believe deeply in community moderation. That’s why we appoint Pro Tempore Moderators and, ideally, democratically elected community moderators for every site in our network. But what do community moderators do? The short answer is, as little as possible!

From the very first version of Stack Overflow faq way back in mid-2008, our goal has always been to give power back to the community:

Stack Overflow is run by you! If you want to help us run Stack Overflow, you’ll need reputation first. Reputation is a (very) rough measurement of how much the Stack Overflow community trusts you. R …

@Jamal I think things were fine the way they were before.

5:30 PM
@200_success: I'll change them back, then. Thanks for letting me know.

@Jamal OK, thanks.

I was just thinking that, since it's a language tag, only questions with that language should use it. But I guess Brainfuck is the exception here.

Q: Python Modular Square root, performance

MichalI wrote the following code in order to solve a Project Euler question (451). It involves summing the largest square roots of 1 mod n such that they are less then n-1. The problem is I need to sum them for 3 < n<2*10^7. I realised that because they are symmetrical we can search for the smallest on...

@200_success: On another note, please do tell me if I am doing too much here (and of course others can weigh in as well). Perhaps I'm still not sure just how much moderation CR needs now, also considering the fact that the other two haven't been very active. Tim Post has seen no issues with me so far, but also doesn't want me to get burned out already, which is a fair point. Once the other moderators do make an appearance, I can step back a bit.
