I hate jQuery. These AJAX calls breaking the code are driving me so mad..

what do you hate about it

Every event breaks after the AJAX call.
I am trying everything to rebind them after the .get() call but it just does not work.

every event?
what do you return from your ajax call?

every event
$.get(file, function(data) {
var content = $(".content.row", data);
$(".content.row").replaceWith(content);
});

you're replacing content
if you're doing any event binding on page load
you need to rebind when you replace content
as the DOM's changed

12:11 AM
I did try it
look lemme show you

i have the same problem ;) thankfully the FE guys I work with sort that shit out

that is only of the sixtyth attempts

yeah, you need to rebind anything you do on document load when you replace the content
as jquery doesnt know about the new stuff

I did! look
at the pastebin

are you sure that you didnt end up removing content-row
when you replaced it?

12:14 AM
I am having trouble finding common elements.
In this numerology program

I did not remove them
because it works once
then it breaks
it's been like two hours I am trying to fix it

you need to find someone who's actually good at this front end stuff ;)

@RobertHarvey I found common elements and trying to do all the condition via a loop instead of manually
But there isn't a common number of blocks of conditions
@RobertHarvey pastebin.com/bZQfHnMm The number of common if statements is shown here

@MattD: I'll just try to make a question on stackoverflow and see if anyone knows anything about it.

im a backend dev
my knowledge of this is "stuff needs to be rebound"
how you actually rebind it, i have no idea ;)
but id be hitting up google

12:21 AM
I did check google as well
it's been like two hours
and I can define myself as a backend dev as well so lolol

probably a good time to go for a quick walk
get a cup of tea
clear your head

I've eaten something already, piece of pandoro, some chips and water
@FrostEngineer! Tell me you're good with jQuery please :(

user20683
@GiamPy I know a little, I would not define myself as "good"

user20683
I've mostly worked in Python

12:23 AM
I see..

user20683
I mean I can figure stuff out

because it's been two hours I am getting crazy with something

user20683
but as far as expertise goes...not so much

basically ajax call breaks jQuery events
and I am aware I need to rebind the events because the DOM changed
however I tried like 60 different methods and it still does not work

any warnings in the chrome console?

12:24 AM
none

user20683

debugged through it?

user20683
Take your code, paste it here. Fix it until not red.

THAT IS AWESOME
thanks @FrostEngineer

user20683
@MattD warning, it's mean. Effective but mean.

12:26 AM
"Use spaces, not tabs." wut?
why can't I use tabs for indentation? :(

user20683
tabs are interpreted differently on different systems

user20683
and by different browsers

user20683
mostly IE

Do yall think Alex Jones is Disinformant/Shill/Jesuit

@ChrisOkyen What does being a Jesuit have to do with anything?

user20683
Questions about conspiracy theories need to go to Skeptics.SE

I was throwing a lot of explnations people have for him being part of the inside disinfo scoup if NWO / Illuminatti

never attribute to malice that which can be attributed to stupidity, and what @FrostEngineer said

Oh thats what Skeptics.SE is about
haha

user20683
12:29 AM
@ChrisOkyen It's about debunking all of that

Oh
So the site is a standpoint of "All Conspiracies are false"

user20683
no, the site's standpoint is that all things are false until proven otherwise.

user20683
they have a high standard of proof and documentation.

Is there any way to load jQuery in it @FrostEngineer?

12:30 AM
So they may agree to some truth to conspiracies

because it gives me errors for things that are not
such as
'$' was used before it was defined.
$(document).ready(function() {

user20683
@GiamPy maybe?

user20683
let me check

@ChrisOkyen you need to go read on liberty by mills.
@ChrisOkyen it neatly describes what the difference between fact and opinion is

I am sorry to anyone if you were hurt or offended by using the term Jesuit.
I apologize
@MattD Gotcha okay
I know a guy who went to William and Mary who is a skeptic and suggested me to read books on logic.

12:32 AM
screw being a skeptic, just be curious about life. learn, think.

psr
@GiamPy - Have you tried debugging pieces? Does console.log(content) give you your content, for example?

anyway
work to do :)

Yeah sorry

every works

Q: Is it possible to validate my jQuery JavaScript with JSLint?

newtogitI wanted to check my JavaScript with JSLint. I am also using jQuery and JSLint seems to be very unhappy about jQuery. So, if I have this code: $(document).ready{ $("a").click(function() { // foo }); }); I am getting a few JSLint messages: Error: Problem at line 1 char...

After the ajax call, everything breaks, @psr.
Otherwise, the first time, it does work.

psr
@GiamPy - Everything breaks? Your cpu catches fire?

It does!
No, just joking - every event breaks.
Every jQuery event breaks, that is.

@MattD I purchased the kindle version of On Liberty

what happens when you onclick on something you've supposed to have rebound
do you get an error?

12:36 AM
nope

where does the debug trace go?

nothing happens
literally nothing happens

Thanks

Q: Events not registering after replaceWith

stragerWhen I replaceWith an element to bring one out of the DOM, then replaceWith it back in, events registered to it do not fire. I need to events to remain intact. @psr: I have an idea. If, instead of replacing the div with another div, I just replace the content of the loaded div into the new div there shouldn't be any issue, correct?

psr
@GiamPy Probably. You could use I think .html instead of .replaceWith() - if I actually remember right.

Ok, it works, however there is a problem.
$.get(file, function(data) {
var content = $(".content.row", data);
$(".content.row").html(content);
});
data will contain also the <div> tags inside.
That means it'll be like:
<div class="content row">
<div class="content row">
<div class="small-12 small-centered column">
@psr: You understand?

psr
@GiamPy got to run, sorry.

it's okay
YES!
I've made it.
For god sake.
$(".content.row").html(content.contents()); had to use contents().
Finally.. after three hours or something.

What can be considered a "Web Application" ?

user20683
@GiamPy By large it's a marketing buzzword. It typically refers to applications that function as "Single Page Apps". So something like Twitter or Trello. The idea being that it's analogous to a desktop app but running with the browser as its platform.

I see.

In computing, a web-based application is any application that uses a web browser as a client. The term may also mean a computer software application that is coded in a browser-supported programming language (such as JavaScript, combined with a browser-rendered markup language like HTML) and reliant on a common web browser to render the application executable. Web applications are popular due to the ubiquity of web browsers, and the convenience of using a web browser as a client, sometimes called a thin client. The ability to update and maintain web applications without distributing a...

Anyway @FrostEngineer I have fixed the problem as you can see in the chat history by modifying the content of the div instead of replacing the div entirely.
That way the DOM element remains the same and elements don't break.

3:34 PM
@Ampt Thought I would take a lesson or two out of your playbook.

@GlenH7 What? Sorry, I was playing with my ultra-high-flex 8 gauge wire

user41796
bah, 8ga is nothin'

its not the 8 gauge that's cool, its the fact that it will bend in a loop smaller than your pinky.
made up of thousands of really really small copper wires

user41796
oh that is cool. Can't say I have ever heard of such a thing before. I thought you were being sarcastic and whinging about trying to flex regular 8ga wire which isn't that flexible

user41796
I can't remember what I had to pull when I upgraded my service panel to 200A. The correct answer being "whatever NEC specified as meeting the minimum requirements."

3:47 PM
yeah, we have to run some really high current wires to parts of the truck through very tight turns and had to get some crazy expensive cable. co-worker cut some and ended up not needing it so now I'm the proud owner of 3 foot of crazy flexible cable

user41796
I'm not sure I want to know how much that stuff costs per-foot. I'm thinking it's dollars-per at a minimum.

googling some of the markings on the cable to try and find a link]

user41796
:-) If I found the right / comparable one, it's looking like $2/ft for starters

haha awesome
compared to the regular 8 guage it's crazy

user41796
what are the markings, btw?

user41796
yay. Now I have something to search for this AM. I think the CSA rating will help ID the right type

haha let me know if you find it! I'm interested to see some of the specs on this thing
I was gonna put banana clips on each end and use in the lab hahaha

user41796
to some degree, cable is cable. Just because you can't utilize all of the properties of the cable doesn't really matter.

Well it was more for the comedic factor
it's flexible but it is the thickness of 8 guage wire
so compared to our other cables it would look ridiculous
it won't even fit into the end of the bananaclip
it's bigger than the terminator itself

user41796
@Ampt I don't know of many bananaclips that can handle 8ga, but all the stuff I did was Uni lab grade stuff. Never played with anything requiring anything close to 8ga

4:02 PM
@GlenH7 yeah that's the size of the stuff we use in the lab. We don't actually drive any loads in the lab, all of our modules get power over the CAN bus via a 12V, low-medium line
this cable runs to the high power modules to power their relays
stuff like salt augurs or hydraulic solenoids

Q: How do you handle multiple developer configuration in a project?

@MichaelT this would be an appropriate use of Maven, no?

user55340
5:07 PM
@Ampt yep. Though thats particular to php. The thing is if you commit your config, you've got to take care that all developer environments are set up the same. If there's a path in there to /home/ampt/lib/foo.lib sad things happen.

@MichaelT still need to dig into maven. Just haven't found the time yet. Gotta learn JS tonight as well for a lab due tomorrow

user55340
Having a tool like maven or gradle manage the dependancies and the immediate development environment in that case is a good thing. Other approaches would be a puppet or chef setup that keeps them consistent.

user55340
The nice part with maven or gradle is that it ensures consistent builds no matter where its built. Be it a dev machine or CI system. Consistency is key to being able to deliver software.

My cat's name is "Black Cat". My parents have a rule that stray cats don't get affectionate names. So, a stray black cat that showed up became named "Black Cat". However, he seems to respond to it (as much as a cat responds to a name) and it stuck when I adopted him (he was a house cat before he was a stray cat).

@GlenH7 This is why I generally stay away from answering questions. Get's my blood boiling a little bit

user41796
6:30 PM
@Ampt depends upon the rest of your rig. Audiophile grade speaker cables claim to have more of the oxygen driven out of the cable, so it's pure copper and thus lower resistance.

user41796
A countering school of thought is to simply run bigger cables than necessary and avoid potential resistance issues that way (pun intended).

as in 8 gauge? haha

user41796
or 2 or 3 runs of 12ga

user41796
I have never had supporting equipment of high enough grade to run A|B tests on speaker wire quality.

In the bad old days of not so long ago, before autorouting mailers and Internet became commonplace, people often published compound bang addresses using the { } convention (see glob) to give paths from several big machines, in the hopes that one's correspondent might be able to get mail to one of them reliably (example: ...!{seismo, ut-sally, ihnp4!rice!beta!gamma!me}). Bang paths of 8 to 10 hops were not uncommon. Late-night dial-up UUCP links would cause week-long transmission times. Bang paths were often selected by both transmission time and reliability, as messages would not infreque

Must have been a rather large site that was part of the hub in the day.

Fun paper to read about routing problems back in the bad old days of not so long ago. uucp.org/papers/pathalias.pdf

@MichaelT "back in the day" when computers were actually given names

user41796
fond memories

user55340
@GlenH7 Whats more, you knew how to get to the major hubs.

@MichaelT back when you needed to know how to get to the major hubs...

Reading in another document, wiscvm and seismo were two of the major hubs that connected multiple different networks. Bitnet (ARPA-BITNET vs BITNET-CS) and aarpa (ARPA-UUCP vs ARPA-ACSNET ) for example.

Thus, if you wanted to switch networks, you likely went through those two machines.

Do I smell a Collider Question?

user41796
@Ampt probably

Currently #20 on the hot list

@Ampt this question will probably hit hot list, with 6 answers in less than an hour meaning you're guaranteed to be disappointed, with brainless upvotes, lemming meh answers etc etc. @MichaelT it looks worth protecting now to prevent / tame coming damage, doesn't it?

user41796
enjoy the rep, y'all

user41796
@gnat Would you argue it's unlikely that someone with < 10 site rep could come up with a superior answer to what's already there?

@AshleyNunn idea: learn some TeX (to add to your resume).

Do people use TeX in industry?

user41796
@Ampt Did you mean +1 instead of -1 to your comment to Karl?!

user41796
ie. you didn't downvote

@GlenH7 It was a joke ;)
I thought his answer was good, but that wasn't what Uncle Ben said.
