1:51 AM
What is with all the idiots tonight?

No idea. I'm writing emails to Sandra about a possible deal.

@Iain most of bunnie huang's stuff is ;p

2:11 AM
is there some particular word used to refer to the owner of an information system
like the top guy, the guy who controls it all
sorry for being rather vague
??

@Ethan what sort of information system?
data steward? data custodian?

if you had to refer to the largest variety of them, but could only use one word
what word would you use

define "owner"...

@Ethan It's called a CIO.
@ewwhite Does the deal involve Sandra learning what's On-Topic on ServerFault and How to write proper questions?

They post a Wireshark screenshot, with black bars to censor things like hostname, but the don't black out the hex right next to it. :P

2:21 AM
@RyanRies Nice. Wonder if they work for Target.

@MichaelHampton If you'd like to avoid a few hundred comment flags, it'd be nice if you would join us here:

@voretaq7 around?

@Undo You need a Mod or specifically voretaq7?

Any SF mod, @Magellan

2:32 AM
@MichaelHampton qualifies as well.

And @MarkHenderson

You see, we have a wide selection of Michaels available.

I'll find one eventually! ;)

Can't trust the Aussies. Me included, since I work APAC shift.

2:33 AM
Oh, @sysadmin1138 would work too

Dang. I had no idea he was an SF mod.

I need a way to just say something like @@mods@serverfault like they do in TL.

Why am I being invited to some random Chemistry chat room?

@MichaelHampton Because we have lists of comments ready for you to delete.
(otherwise we'll turn our flag scripts loose ;))

2:35 AM
@Undo OK, then flag them.

@Magellan Burn... Her email was properly formatted and very clear on details.

@MichaelHampton Please?

@ewwhite A Christmas Miracle!

Believe it or not, I have things to do that don't involve Server Fault. Just flag the comments and someone will get to them as soon as it's practical.

Ok, great. Will do.

2:37 AM
@MichaelHampton Now you're just being ridiculous. We know you work 18 hours a day and don't sleep. =P
OTOH, soon I will be running around taking care of babies for 18 hours a day not sleeping. So I should just shut my trap.

@MichaelHampton Is there a mod who's life is Server Fault? We would contact them, then.

@hichris123 Don't make the sysadmins cranky. Nobody likes cranky sysadmins.

We really don't want to flood their queue, but we can if they make us.

@Magellan But... me not a computer.

@hichris123 We get along great with the computers. It's the Devs that make us cranky.

2:41 AM
@Magellan Then why's Server Fault exist if the computers and code works? :)

@hichris123 Heh. Noticed your profile. Have you had a job in IT yet?
It's usually the Dev's fault.

@Magellan No, still in school.

You should also take a moment to view my chat profile.

Not that the Devs won't spend months blaming Ops for something not working.
I have the joy of yet another meeting tomorrow with one of my Devs whose predecessor decided not to build a back-out mechanism into a Java deployment app that does a major database schema change. One way upgrades on something that is mission-critical....

A text adventure game in a pixel-based programming language!

2:50 AM
could PayPal be described as a networking service
@Magellan

@Ethan yes?

could it be described as one

Is this your homework?

yeah somewhat
sorry

Then Fuck Off and do your own thinking.
Christ. Both my kids know better than to ask someone to do their work for them.

2:54 AM
Its just one question and its not technically homework I'm still on winterbreak

Wait. You're the guy that wanted help earlier this year figuring out a way to cheat on an exam, weren't you.

No I was asking for help with my calculator

In order to upload a textbook to it so that you could cheat on a test.

Oh that
No I talked it out with whats his face

@Ethan On the upper right hand corner of the chat screen, there's a room subject. What's the first sentence of that room subject?

3:01 AM
@Magellan my bad I'm sorry

:12884282 Because it's not on-topic. And we're certainly not here to cater to people who don't want to think for themselves. And really, when you think about it, you've chosen to ask the one group of people in the IT profession who will be least sympathetic to you wanted to squirm out from your responsibilities.

sorry

Sorry don't mean shit in the real world. Results matter.

3:13 AM
@Andrew I have no idea if that is horrifying or beautiful

3:25 AM
@Undo Your script is broken.

@MichaelHampton Which one?
Oh, the flagger one. Yeah, noticed that. Fixed.
(in my defense, Manish wrote that code :P)

3:42 AM
People that don't take two minutes to read about what the performance counters that they're monitoring actually mean deserve a special place in hell.

Q: iSCSI drive running at 100% but SAN and Network are not

GregWe have a virtual server running on VMware. This virtual server has a number of iSCSI drives attached to it (E, F & G drives). It has 2 virtual NICs - 1 for normal network traffic and 1 for iSCSI. Both NICs are connected at 1Gbps. We are running Windows 2012. Every half hour we run a process tha...

You knew you were going to get a follow up question there :)

@JourneymanGeek the language is called Piet.

@RyanRies I know

2 hours later…
6:00 AM
Anyone have experience doing a P2V of a Windows 7 workstation into vSphere?

2 hours later…
7:35 AM
So I hit 10k overnight
and the flagged posts thing that now shows up confuses me
there's a 'Flag or disagree' button on flagged posts, but clicking it only has options for flagging, not for saying "neh, it's ok"
ah, one needs to vote to make it go away, that's odd...
and doesn't work either...

G'day
@DennisKaarsemaker Congratulations

@DennisKaarsemaker be not amazed at the 10k tools

@Iain It takes more than a non-functional flag button to amaze me :)

@DennisKaarsemaker isn't there are option to disagree ?
Yes, It has invalid flags is an option

7:50 AM
ah, don't know how I missed that. Dumb :)
so, I did that, and now it shows up in the review queue so I can disagree again
and the little red '1' next to 'review' in the top bar also doesn't disappear

I have a piece of userstyle that hides that section of the top bar so I (mostly) don't see it

I don't mind seeing it if there's something to do
but this seems rather pointless

I can't be doing with the review audits, so I just ignore the whole thing by not seeing it

8:08 AM

@DennisKaarsemaker It would be a bit less pointless if we had more flags coming in.

4 hours later…
12:40 PM
What a little shit
Lol you are talking such as there are 10000 parameters configuration to make. But in 14 simple screenshots i showed all of the network configuration parameters. There aren't any other related network configuration option. I checked everywhere. I believe you have no idea how to solve this problem. — MonsterMMORPG 2 mins ago

So begins the Monday hate

While it is convention that the IP used for the gateway be the lowest in the subnet, it isn't a requirement, and you didn't even mention the subnet assigned. Your provider will generally tell you the gateway address; it is theirs to give you the right one and yours to type it in correctly. I guess @MDMarra was wrong to give you the benefit of the doubt in that. — Falcon Momot 28 secs ago

@PatoSáinz Beats a reload-the-whole-page-for-each-image-slideshow I suppose.

He also asked the same question last night, which I responded to, and he promptly deleted

yeah. what a twat.

So you're stalking him then? :)

No idea how he's making that work with a single physical interface and no VLANs, but good for him.

I turned down a job offer from DeviantArt.
I didn't want that on my resume.

technically, the same thing anyway

@PatoSáinz How are 'bronies' not a subclass of 'furries'? Perhaps I do not know enough about either of these.

Anonymous
@jscott you are right... bronies are a subset of furries

@jscott oh god burn all the things
anyway, I'll inflict you with this ghost from the past before I go to bed...

12:53 PM

@MDMarra You probably like Speed Metal... Did you know about this? - More speed metal bands use computerized drum machines because human drummers can't keep up

<3 kick drums with two pedals instead of one
I wonder if anyone has yet made a kick drum that has bicycle-like pedals
and a gear ratio

@ewwhite I knew that, and I don't listen to it

To tone his legs, crucial for foot-drumming, he wears 3-pound ankle weights.

@FalconMomot They'd also need one of those fancy @ewwhite Bluetooth cadence sensors.

12:59 PM
from the hyper-V guy's game forum
(now I'm stalking)

is it a troll?

It's him telling his faithful followers to install the Alexa toolbar

oh, an SEO mong.
sigh

@MDMarra Less stalking, moar Speed Metal

there are lots of smart people at google who can make the searching work.
you don't need to go out of your way to get into an arms race with them as you try to manipulate their ranking.

1:01 PM
I used to listen to metal, then hardcore, now I pretty much just listen to The National
And pop punk from the late 90s

@MDMarra My wife loves them. I'm kinda on the fence. A bit morose and slow.

@MDMarra we would have similar taste, if you would only listen to more metal.
the late 90s pop punk is really nice music for getting work done. it doesn't make you think a lot, but it's fast and sounds nice.

Metal got less interesting when I stopped playing guitar so much

you're listening to the wrong metal perhaps

Born of Osiris, Acacia Strain, etc
It's not that I dislike it, I just never feel like listening to it anymore, so it's been removed from my iPhone, which is essentially a death sentence

1:06 PM
aah
that stuff in particular can get so dark.
I never got why they named that band acacia strain, of all things

They're just weird. They have a side project that's more hardcore called Cockpunch

I mean, acacia is kind of associated with death sort of, but not generally

Blegh, snow...

yes, snow is for people who worship the devil and eat small children and keep spiders as pets.

@NathanC you choose to live in Maine, NO COMPLAINTS!

That would be like @pauska claiming his day was overloaded with looting and pillaging. I mean, he's a Viking.

1. Best chair money can buy.

because if a dj has to be standing all night with his controller... why wouldn't you be able to code all day accurately whilst standing up

@MDMarra I'd like you to come over and try it!
Comfy office seating... #swopper http://t.co/c8VMfddL2Y

@ewwhite swopper?

@ewwhite Are they $1k+?
Dude, no back. What is this, Siberia?

it's just a chair without anything for the back

In mother Russia, chair leans on you.

It's like sitting on an exercise ball... without looking like a douche.

2:47 PM
800bones. dang.

I don't want to sit on an exercise ball. I want to sit on a chair.
With arms
And a back
And levers that make me more comfortable when I fiddle with them
@jscott one of my engineers just came up with this
"To install the agent for customers that don't have SCCM and have a remote workforce, we use a GPO to create a scheduled task that triggers on a successful domain time sync event. it'll execute as system and install the office telemetry agent from a share that has "Domain Computers" with read access granted on it."
Then the last line of the script unregisters the scheduled task and puts the computer in a group that's excluded from processing the GPO

SCCM is RAM-hungry...well, at least the SQL Server part is

@MDMarra I have an Aeron, too... but this is moar comfy

@NathanC Not especially. 8GB should be plenty for the DB backend for your size, right?

@MDMarra If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

2:51 PM
True...for just messing around I only have a 4 GB VM...but I might be able to toss more at it

haha
@NathanC you'd cringe at the SQL backend I just had a customer spin up
4 servers, 8vCPU 32GB RAM

Honestly, a bit hairy, but if it works...

damn..
I have a pair of servers in a failover cluster but those are in our production domain
I created a (valid!) domain for my 2012 testing needs

ya!
@jscott I cant think of a better way
The remote workforce doesn't VPN on startup, they do on logon, so GPO software deplyoment doesnt work. I suppose you could have a central machine loop through psexec and keep a tally of what it's installed where but thats filthy too
@NathanC 2 of these were in an AlwaysOn AG for SCOM and SCORCH, the other two were standalone boxes for SCSM. 1 for the SM database, one for the data warehouse
So it was really three production instances across the four boxes

Sheesh...I'm thinking we're gonna need another server...
I'm pushing the two hosts we have above the 85% usage mark RAM-wise

2:55 PM
Depends on how large you are but yeah. If you're going to deploy all, or most of System Center, it needs resources on the backend
Not to mention separate SQL Servers for some componenets

and some components have to be by themselves

SCOM must be installed on an instance that's SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, as does SCORCH
SCSM should be installed on an instance that's Latin1_General_100_CI_AS

I just had the SCOM install fall over because I renamed the machine after i installed sql server...so now I have to rename it and do it all over again >.<

SCOM, SCCM and SCSM need separate reporting services instances so if you colocate SSRS on the local SQL box, that wont work

Thank you btw, @MDMarra, I upgraded the wife's 2011 MBP to SSD and 16GB RAM. Works a charm, once I found pmset to prevent auto-hibernate.

2:57 PM
Yeah...it's a good thing I'm working through installs in a test environment

@jscott oh nice. glad to hear it

This way I can see how much I really need and how all the pieces fit

I'm keeping track of all the resources needed in a spreadsheet even :>
@MDMarra Ya, I've looked at that, but there's some stuff that isn't really listed ...like for SCOM, you need WDS and WSUS and a few other components, for example
although, WDS should've been obvious

If you want to do OSD and OS patching, yes

2:59 PM
@MDMarra SCOM won't install without the roles
