Q: I Don't Understand Polymorphism?

user1411571I feel like I don't understand how polymorphism works in Pyhon. Here is something I put together. class _Tag(object): def __init__(self): #DisjointedTag and JoinedTag will bypass __init__. #Also, self will not be defined within this class. #Bottom line, this class is ...

I'd like to float an idea for a feature on Meta: Best of Code Review 2013. The idea is, we establish categories (e.g. Most unexpectedly difficult question, Best follow-up/revised question, Best use of images in a question, Best use of images in an answer, Best hidden bug discovered in a review, Best Socratic review, Most tactful advice in an answer). Each category has its own community wiki Meta post; members submit nominations as responses to it, with a short justification.
5
The prize: upvotes all around.
If you like the idea, we'd have to work out some rules first.

I'm okay with it. Let's see what others think.

@200_success I think that is a cool idea.

So, for instance, someone creates the categories (as answers), and others post their nominations?
Nominations in the answers, I mean.

Question; can someone reference me a good article for Javascript Scalars? It's an absolutely alien subject to me.

@Jamal Yes. We would settle on the categories in advance, probably in a preliminary Meta post. Then, once the event starts, anyone can post their nominations.

8:41 PM
I've tried googling, but only found hyper-technical references.

@PhilFromHeck Do you have an example of a question?

@PhilFromHeck That might be a better question for somewhere on SO.

Well, someone on Code Review suggested I used Scalars instead of storing an array of booleans, and a separate boolean.

Not good for SO, either. Merely asking for resources is off-topic.

@PhilFromHeck That would be me.

8:43 PM
I went through their critiques and have fixxed almost everything, except for that.

A: jQuery-animated navigation menu

200_successFor beginner code, that's reasonably good. Instead of calling setTimeout() yourself, why not let jQuery handle the animation for you with .animate()? Your indentation is wrong, as evidenced by } } } at the end. I believe that two spaces is too stingy for readability, and also encourages...

nods
Could you maybe point me towards a resource so that I can educate myself? If you don't know of a good one, I can always expand my search.

By scalar, I mean a variable that isn't an array.
I'll try to edit the original answer to elaborate.

Ah okay, so just like a series of booleans instead?
Alright, cool; thank you very much 200_success!

Anyone have idea what game this is? Spades, perhaps? I'm trying to improve the title as well as retagging.

Q: Better way to write the following code?

ZarathosIs there a better, more elegant solution to the following method? Boolean[] spades = new Boolean[10]; // 40 cards deck foreach (Card card in m_Cards.Where(card => (card.Suit == Suit.Spades))) spades[(Int32)card.Rank] = true; // Rank goes from Ace (0) to King (10) if (spades[0] && spades[1] &&

8:56 PM
@Jamal I don't mean as a question on SO, but perhaps something to ask on a chatroom on SO.

Oh. That'd be okay, then.

1 hour later…
10:08 PM
@Jamal OP is Italian, and some Italian decks have 40 cards. I can't figure out what game it is, though.
A playing card is a piece of specially prepared heavy paper, thin cardboard, plastic-coated paper, cotton-paper blend, or thin plastic, marked with distinguishing motifs and used as one of a set for playing card games. Playing cards are typically palm-sized for convenient handling. A complete set of cards is called a pack (UK English), deck (US English), or set (Universal); and the subset of cards held at one time by a player during a game is commonly called a hand. A deck of cards may be used for playing a variety of card games, with varying elements of skill and chance, some of which a...

@200_success: I'll leave it be, then. I'm finished with retagging for the day.

10:27 PM
I predict... that StackExchange's next posted question is off-topic.

Q: Received Ruby error message 'undefined method'

nanotechz9lI verified the syntax is correct via the net/http ruby docs. I've already declared require 'net/http' which allows the post method so I'm unsure whats going on here. A point in the right direction is appreciated. Error: auth.rb:16:in `': undefined method `post' for # (NoMethodError) Code: ...

@JamalSavant!

I'm good. :-) I was expecting SE to pull a fast one on me, but nope.

11:07 PM
hi all

Hi!

whats a bounty good for in this context?

It depends on the bounty-issuer. Someone else may really like another person's question and would like to see good answers.
And apparently he wants that hat. ;-)

oh its just about those hats again

Q: Hangman Code is buggy

AnonMy Hangman game works perfectly for some words, but for others I get this nasty error message. Any ideas why? My code is not SSCCE but I've uploaded my image to this post so you can re-create the the error message. When you enter the letter 'r', you get the error message. To change to another wor...

11:15 PM
lol not enough rep for direct edits, now my edit on a CR question must be reviewed ... how meta

Done.

Now I feel bad that I did only do the lazy editing to the codeblock ^^

I won't hold you against that. It's the most obvious flaw anyway. Moreover, that question is off-topic, so I'll close it myself unless some are around to put in votes.

do you mind explaining me why it is offtopic?

Simply put: it's only talking about an error, and it's also not asking for a review of the code. We only review working code here (that is, working to the best of the OP's knowledge). Such questions belong on Stack Overflow.

11:22 PM
Saw the question, voted to close, expect more to follow.
Came here to say "Why can't people read the on-topic page?"

Tell that so so many people on SO. :/ looks at close queue

I sometimes find it hard to categorize my questions regarding these faq criteria
however, I am more afraid of rejection so I don't post in the first place

Does my code work?
If it does not work, use StackOverflow, that's what it's for.

no there is a missing ℝ at line 3

Believe it or not, I've mainly stopped asking questions on SO for that reason. I also find most of my answers from existing questions anyway.

11:25 PM
@Jamal: Then your problems are not exotic enough

That is true. My answers here are like that as well. But, they were enough to help get me to this position, and I hope to be able to give more "advanced" answers someday.

hopefully every answer you give will be more advanced than the previous ones, otherwise you are not learning

They seem to be, a bit. A lot of it is still from my personal knowledge, as I had to gain a lot of it online. College only teaches you so much.

thats also an SO question, isn't it: codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/37959/…
SO made me a better programmer in 5 months than 3 years of college had done so far
4
the college simply lacks enthusiasm and is not up to date

That question could also work here, but it does seem a bit borderline. Any close votes should help determine that.

11:31 PM
i don't have enough rep

Agreed. In many of my C++ classes, I've felt convinced that I knew more than others. I was also bothered by the fact that the Standard Template Library is hardly even mentioned.

exactly

I know. I'm referring to those able to vote. You are, however, encouraged to flag-to-close as you see fit.

at my university we have no class about c++ whatsoever
they simply assume you know it
and if you don't, then you get tought the worst way
C plus iostreams

My next programming class is an intro to OO, using Java. And I've never programmed in Java before.
One older instructor of mine was okay with void main(). That was never proper C or C++.

11:34 PM
I stumble upon it (Java) every so often
yeah it would be a start if those teachers would even do that part right ^^
the sad thing is that most people don't care

@Jamal when Java starts to boggle you, drop me a line ;-)
(I know a good shrink)

It'll at least give you a chance to surpass the instructor. :-) My last C++ professor also didn't seem to know much about the STL. I used it in one of my programs, and luckily it was still accepted.
@rolfl: I definitely will. ;-) I already have this book, but I haven't opened it yet.

may I ask where this was?

What do you mean?

college?

11:38 PM
Looks like some central american temple?

Yeah, college.

no I meant which college?

Oh. Texas State University (it's also on my profile).

ok

One more year, and I'm finished.

11:39 PM
note [to myself] "avoid Texas State University Instructor" ^^
do you know where you are heading?

Some are very good, though. No college has perfect instructors.

yeah the word perfect forbids this

Probably into software. It interests me the most, and I really took a beating in computer architecture.

I heard one college has Stroustrup thoguh

Texas A&M.

11:41 PM
so you can't get much closer to the source (regarding C++)

True. Oddly enough, he has less-than-stellar reviews on RateMyProfessors.

being a language designer does not make you a good professor
I
have enjoyed some of his talks though

Oohhh, just got three hats!

but maybe I am a bit of a C++ language geek there ...

True. I just wasn't expecting as many negative ones. Beyond that, it's still nice to read what he has to say online, along with the other leading experts.

11:43 PM
@rolfl: Did you rob a store?

Nope, 23 hats in total now.
22 on CR, makes me tied at #2 with Simon.... That will irritate him.
also #85 across the whole SE network.

@Jamal: Do you feel preprared for working "in the wild" by the education given to you right now?

Thank yo for participating in our short survey, your answers will be anonymized appropriately, and the appropriate authorities informed ... ;-)

Hello @retailcoder

11:48 PM
I would say no. I'd at least need to finish my classes, and also consider an internship if possible.

@syb0rg hey

Good day off, @retailcoder?

@rolfl yeah, just saying hi, got some more things to do here before I can spend my votes :)

@Jamal: The closest we got to current state of the art programming was a theoretical course where we heard something about those patterns they were all talking about 10 years ago

@retailcoder - you go away for the day, and, somehow, without really trying, I scored 5 hats today.

11:50 PM
@rolfl nice! I don't think (well I hope!) I played any part in this though :)
@rolfl bah, I'm still #1 :p

Naah, they are all 'innocuous' hats.... peanut gallery, upboat, full house, and dotr, as well as the milliners for passing 20.
All things that have just taken a natural process to gain.... (and you're probably surprised I did not have already).
If I wanted to, I could work for 3 more hats and catch you .... sock-puppet, archeologist, make-it-rain

You're a monkey. You should be working for bananas. Hats are for humans.
2

I'm ten short of R.E.S.P.E.C.T too
with 5 minutes to go ;-)
@retailcoder - 1 minute!
OVERKILL!

@rolfl Did you mean 10 reputation, or 10 upvotes?
