hii

welcome

12:28 PM
@BMitch I did up vote (I thought), but I also edited at the same time, so maybe something went wrong (possibly user error).

@Tester101 lies, damn lies, and voting statistics. lol

12:50 PM
I thought this question had already been asked, but I can't find it.

Q: How do safety labels on light fittings work with energy saving bulbs?

Tim GradwellMy lamp says "Max 40W or Energy Saving 8W". I have a halogen bulb which says "28W = 36W". Is it safe to use with the lamp? Why / why not? (Sorry if the answer is easily available on the web - I did search before posting here!)

@BMitch NOOOOOOOO!
Don't migrate CRAP!!!
How do I block a migration?

@Tester101 too late
now we can ask our questions and put it on hold pending enough details

From now on, instead of closing questions, I'm migrating them all to Electronics.
What happens if I "Clear Migration History"?

1:10 PM
@Tester101 Oh, and just as an FYI, I'm going to reopen that question in a minute when I'm ready to post my own answer. Even if we can't say what's wrong, we can describe how to debug the problem.
If you've got a problem with that, come at me bro! :)

Install a new bulb. Done
Ooh. Clear Migration History, clears the migration history. Now I think I can migrate it back...
@BMitch Post your answer, and I'll leave this one be. But next time, I'm migrating it right back.

@Tester101 closing it on your site rejects the migration, clearing the migration history and sending it back makes things wierd

@Tester101 Don't hold a grudge against electronics.SE by picking on innocent question askers. :)

@BMitch I feel bad that the OP is caught in the middle, but Electronics has a history of migrating crap.

electronics.se gets some weird quasi electronics quasi diy questions that just don't have a good home. Hobby projects here, and probably crappy questions on ee from an OP that doesn't know a soldering iron from a blow torch.

1:23 PM
@waxeagle Making it weird is what I do.
If it's crap there, it's crap here. Flinging your crap over the wall, doesn't make it less crappy.

Tell that to the monkeys at the zoo

Oh, they know.

I'll give them credit though, at least they asked this time.
Usually they just fling crap at us without warning.
We need GarbageDump.SE, where everybody can just migrate their junk.

lol, start the proposal on area51, I'll get some popcorn for the flame war.

1:29 PM
@BMitch sadly, you would not be the first to start that proposal

@waxeagle I'm not starting it, someone else has to fling that poo.
I'm just planning on eating my popcorn from a poo free viewing area.

How about The Black Hole (BlackHole.SE)?

@Tester101 I suggest converting this to an answer:
this GE document specifies a water pressure of 40-120 psi, for the ice maker to function properly. Which as BMitch points out in chat would mean the 1-2 gallon container would have to be about 100 ft. above the fridge. — Tester101 Oct 30 at 13:54

A: Is it possible to use the ice maker on a refrigerator without a water supply line?

Tester101Comment converted to answer as per this suggestion this GE document specifies a water pressure of 40-120 psi, for the ice maker to function properly. The water pressure must be between 40 and 120 psi. Pressures below 40 psi may cause a malfunction of the icemaker (i.e. producing hollow...

@Tester101 thank you. +1, now community won't bump it.
I frequently give out +1's to make community shut up. Always hate seeing a new activity notification only to find out it was community.

Someone's building a basement for their bathroom?

Q: Bathroom Basement

IsabellaA contractor wants to build a raised floor for my bathroom basement that he is building for me instead of breaking the concrete. The plumbing would be underneath the floor. Is this a viable and safe alternative to breaking concrete? or he just wants to keep the costs down for himself?

@BMitch lol, actually a good question, I'm going to be looking into a similar thing if I ever get around to putting a bathroom in my basement...with the added factor of how to deal with the fact that the septic outlet in my house is up about 5' from where I'd be putting the bathroom.

For the stairs going down to a bathroom's basement, I'd recommend a non-slip surface.

Bathroom basements are very handy for accessing plumbing, monitoring for leaks, and storage.

is this what happens when EE.SE rejects all these questions?

Q: How do the windings in a residential transformer create a neutral and why are the hots opposite phase?

DougPretty self-explanatory I think; just wondering why neutral "manifests" from the windings and why it "outputs" (for lack of a better word) a negative-phase hot? I guess my perplexity comes from thinking that the [+hot/neutralwindings/-hot] are all the same wire so assuming that is correct what c...

for you @Tester101, I migrated that one to EE.

Welcome to Project Update Thursday
This will be a special 15 minute edition of PUT, after that, I'm closing up and no bookmarks if no one has any updates.

I did my kitchen sink work that I talked about a while ago. Removed the broken instant hot water heater, replaced the broken disposal and installed my new kitchen faucet.
Also changed out the valves on the supply lines for quarter-turn ball valves.

did you do the sink too, or just the faucet and disposal?

Just the faucet and disposal. And the supply line valves, which are now quarter turn.

I replaced my valves too, such an easy project, and quarter turn valves are so much better IMO

Only one unexpected trip to Lowe's to replace the dishwasher supply hose. I pulled the dishwasher out to unplug the hot water heater, but didn't look at it then. Come to put everything back together, I see that it had been severely crunched at some point in the past.
I'm lucky it hadn't burst

8:07 PM
was it a thin copper line?

Built a fence.

(woah, I cut you guys down to 15 minutes and suddenly everyone has updates, next week you're only getting 10 minutes, speed PUT FTW!)

No, braided metal sheathed hose, but the sheath was broken through in a couple of spots with sharp pointy bits everywhere

@ChrisCudmore wood fence?

Yeah, PT. 6 ft shadow box.
Built a jig to space the boards. Went quite quickly.

8:09 PM
And Lowe's dropped the price of my faucet by ~ $30 for Black Friday. grumble

Found a guy that would put the posts in for $25 bucks each, $250 minimum. Had 8 posts up in an hour.
I was quite impressed.
1 guy on drill, 1 on post, 1 on concrete and one on grabbing things the other guys need.

Nice, I may need to pull a few of my fence posts and either reseat them or replace them. But I only have two posts to do, and some concrete work that I may want to do first. (Fence near my front stoop)
@NiallC. That's when you buy a second faucet on black friday, and then walk right back in to return your purchase with the old receipt.

@BMitch I thought about that. :)

You can ask them if they'll price match retroactively, but buy and return is a lot easier.
ok, 15 minutes is up, speed PUT is over
Thanks for joining us for this week's PUT

I also picked up an oscillating multitool in the sales:

8:17 PM
ohh shinny, I expect another PUT update from an oscillating tool project from you next week :)

And learned that a foam back roller works well for maneuvering in and out of the sink cabinet.

Like a cut-down pool noodle?

@BMitch Would you prefer a cutting-type project, or a sanding-type project?

Awesome idea!
An oscillating type project would be preferred.

@ChrisCudmore That might work. I have a therapeutic one from straining my back a couple of years ago.

@NiallC. hangonaminute that looks like somethinelse

I just used a few pillows myself

The roller allows you to position yourself in front of the cabinet, then just roll in. No awkward bending to get your head through the door or under the sink
