JLU needs more questions to thrive.

I've been spending time coding instead of studying Japanese, though. Even though I'm just a learner, and there are plenty of things I don't know, I'm not sure what to ask

Anonymous
I do keep thinking of questions to ask, but I never write them down, so I forget... T_T

あはは
私も、書いておかないと、すぐ忘れます

On English Language & Usage, a lot of the questions are asked by native speakers

Anonymous
Here on Japanese Language & Usage, it's mostly learners

I guess that's because this site is in English :-)

Are there many Japanese sites like 知恵袋?

Anonymous
I think I've seen others on Google searches but I forgot what they were

「教えてgoo」っていうのがあるよ
あと、OK waveかな

Anonymous
@ちょこれーと Oh, right! I forgot, I even signed up for OKwave

1:15 PM
へえ!私OKwaveも教えてgooもアカウント作ったことがないわ
知恵袋よりも「釣り」がいないから平和そう。

I made an account but I forgot to ever use it

But OKwave sends me email sometimes :-)

でも、知恵袋って間違いも結構多いし、訂正しようと思っても締め切られていてできないことが多い。ある意味、間違いや俗説を再生産している面がある。
「そういう説もある」程度に受け取った方が無難。

2:09 PM
Hello ! I don't speak any Japanese. I was brought some Japanese delicacies from Japan and I'd like to know what it is and what's in it. Could somebody help ?

sure, if we can :)

heh... the second one is manjuu, I'm surrounded by the stuff
third is a safety label... I haven't read all of it yet, but don't see any identifier for what the foodstuff is

The three labels are from the same box.

ahh... the 1st and 3rd both look to be "Don't eat if the package has been opened... etc etc etc" type stuff
2nd one says it's a 16-pack of manjuu... someone better with names than me can probably read that brand name

2:16 PM
@jkerian Thanks a lot.

2:49 PM

あ、回転焼きって、大阪だけらしい
関東では「今川焼き」とか
is a Japanese fish-shaped cake. The most common filling is red bean paste that is made from sweetened azuki beans. Other common fillings may be custard, chocolate, cheese, or sweet potato. Some shops even sell taiyaki with okonomiyaki, gyoza filling, or a sausage inside. Taiyaki is made using regular pancake or waffle batter. The batter is poured into a fish-shaped mold for each side. The filling is then put on one side and the mold is closed. It is then cooked on both sides until golden brown. See also *Wagashi *Bungeoppang References

Ooh, someone said my sentence specimens were ギリギリ大丈夫

Someday, I plan to pay attention to the difference between の and こと.

Anonymous
But that's a long-term goal. I have to work up to it with stuff like "I'd better not put だ after いい"

7:22 PM
@ssb fresh manju from onsen land changed my mind on it
i only previously ate it before as omiyage and it was meh

A: What's the difference between wa (は) and ga (が)?

jkerian(This answer was originally at this question, but it seemed more appropriate here) は and が are a bit complex because they have several meanings, and some of the shades of meaning of wa and ga are a bit hard to distinguish casually. The best coverage of this that I have read is "The Structure of...

This answer seems to be about the semantic distinction between は and が, but there are also important syntactic differences, I think

Anonymous
I think I wrote this example down from Shibatani 1999:

Anonymous
鳥が飛ぶとき鳴く [ 鳥が飛ぶ ] とき鳴く When the bird flies, X cries
鳥は飛ぶとき鳴く 鳥は | 飛ぶとき 鳴く The bird, when it flies, cries

Anonymous
鳥が attaches to 飛ぶ, the verb in the embedded clause

Anonymous
鳥は skips over the embedded verb and attaches to the matrix verb, 鳴く

Anonymous
8:11 PM
So in a sense, the entire rest of the sentence predicates on the topic 鳥

Anonymous
And of course, は can appear in places が can't: ではない/*でがない

Anonymous
And, I think, when は marks a topic, it must be clause-initial

Anonymous
Whereas (again, I think) が can almost always be scrambled from its unmarked position unless it's referred to later by e.g. 自分

Anonymous
Except in idioms like 気がする

Anonymous
So it could be good to have an answer that covers the syntactic differences as well as the semantic differences, since the choice isn't always between は and が. Sometimes there's no choice: only は makes sense, or only が makes sense. And sometimes the choice is between は and something else.

I don't really feel qualified to write an answer about は vs が. I still get some of my は vs が exercises wrong, despite reading a lot about it :-(

Anonymous
But maybe someday!
