2:49 AM
The wrong time of day for the launch, it probably won't flyby Mars that closely, I don't think the car is actually going to be free floating, and I could name more.
T-16 hours, give or take.
Both boosters won't land at the same time.
The astronaut doesn't have his seatbelt on...
I'm still not sure if there will be some kind of detachment.
It might be that the PAF will separate from the booster. The car won't be completely free floating, but it would be a bit more then it would otherwise.
Okay, it's going to be an Earth/Mars cycler. Interesting.
And to achieve that will require a burn after a 6 hour coast period. Wow...
Huh. Looks like the side boosters will land almost at the same time.

6 hours later…
8:41 AM
@PearsonArtPhoto What about the little one in the roadster on the dash?
The animation didn't have the mini roadster on it!

6 hours later…
2:28 PM
"David Bowie's classic hit Space Oddity will be looping on the radio as the car is hurled into an elliptical orbit that stretches out to Mars' orbit around the Sun." That's very surprising, why bring a radio rather than just play a local recording? bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-42950957

3:21 PM
I'm sure it means via the speakers.
The Tesla entertainment system.
T-3:10
Wait, the real one does have a seat belt... Sigh.
Falcon Heavy sends a car to Mars https://youtu.be/Tk338VXcb24
Looking at that picture, I think the car/frame will separate from the PAF, so it kind of will be floating in space.

3:42 PM
@PearsonArtPhoto The selfie stick scaffolding is not in the video either. I expect it is not accurate, and is more notional.

Yeah, the selfie stick is new...
I'm wondering when they did that. I bet they did it in the last week or two.

4:10 PM
Still on track for T-2:20
Our site is a bit more popular then normal...
And my reputation is on a very upward trajectory recently...

4:43 PM
launch pushed back to 2 pm EST

Upper altitude winds.
I tried editing this question to make it better.
-2
Q: Why is the Falcon Heavy first launch being given such a risk of failure?

munishWhy is there is so much fuss about falcon heavy exploding on the way? I don't understand why would a they purposely design a rocket having a good chance of explosion during launch. If they are not confident in it, why are they launching? Looks like a lot of risk and waste of time and money to m...

Let me know if that helps the close and downvotes?

5:14 PM
There seems to be a third stage, which maybe carries out 2 burns, from press kit:
> Mission continues on an experimental long coast and third stage two burn to
target a precessing Earth-Mars elliptical orbit around the sun

Rachel Ferrigno on February 06, 2018

Today we’re excited to announce a partnership with Pluralsight, the enterprise technology learning platform.

Stack Overflow’s mission has always been the help the world’s developers; whether it’s helping them get answers to their coding problems through Q&A, or helping them build their career with Jobs. Pluralsight has many of the same goals—helping the tech community grow their skills, share their knowledge, and create progress through technology—making the partnership a win-win for all involved. …

@geoffc looks better. There is a reasonable question in there somewhere.

@Edlothiad It's weird wording; it means a third burn of S2

Yes, parse it as "long coast and (a) third (stage two) burn"

@Edlothiad isn't it the third burn that stage two makes?

5:15 PM
@uhoh I thought so. Tried to dig at least part of it out of there...

@DylanSp Ah, I see, sorry that had me quite confused

I think i should have waited for a couple more downvotes to then fix it. I forget what badge that can earn...

@RussellBorogove Ok, I was struggling to read it as a third stage, but it sounded weird.

@geoffc you accidentally acted altruistically!
It's 1 AM here. I forget when the FH launch window opens, can you tell me in UTC?

@uhoh And I deeply regret it now. Intensly. I think I will go revert my edit, wait for a few dowbvotes, and then redo my edit. Ya, I think Iw ill go do that. :)

5:17 PM
@geoffc I think that was a hat not abadge.

(Official term is 'points piggy' a term I own!)
noon here in EST, launch at 2PM EST. -5 from UTC?

1830 UTC

1900 UTC now.
@Edlothiad Well drat!

OK thanks! :-)

@geoffc I think it's the waffles hat

5:19 PM
You can ask google "2:00 PM eastern time in utc"

I earn points for stuff I write for a vendor I work with in two different ways. I am 'known' there as the official points piggy of the group. They tease me about it quite a bit. But I gots me lotsa points!

> answer a question scoring -3 or lower; the question eventually becomes 3+ and your answer becomes 5+

@Edlothiad Double drat! I might just hit that one, if all goes well. Doh!

keeps getting pushed back, actually, probably due to a no-go decision made for fuel loading. 2:50 pm EST, 1920 UTC

Favorite Simposn moment - Homer is driving to the La Brea Tar Pits, hits a petrified deer. Yells out Doh! Marge says "A deer"! Lisa pipes in from the backseat a "Female deer" Hahaha
@DylanSp Stupid wind.

5:21 PM
EST is a half timezone?

er, 1950.

@Edlothiad No, I was going from 1:30pm

Ah yes, I'm getting confused...
Is there anywhere to watch it other than the spacex stream or is that my best bet?

Spaceflightnow.com has a for pay feed that is their own camera.

Ah yes, I think I'd read about that, so just those 2? (I've never actually seen one of these "live")

5:25 PM
SpaceX will have the best feeds, owning the cameras as it were. SFN has a camera on site that is unique. Others may as well for this launch.

T-1:30 currently
The launch was delayed until 2:00
YouTube usually is the best.
There no doubt will be many feeds to watch this time.
I bet most of the major news networks have a team down there, and why not get video? Streaming it might not happen, but I bet there will be a few.
Wait, hold an hour... So 2:30?

2:50EST seems the latest.

Wow, that late. Hmmm.
I expected at least a 30 minute delay, so...
Yeah, you are right. So T-2:15 currently.

Drat. I have to be somewhere at 3PM where I cannot look at my phone. Douoble drat. Wife will kill me if I ditch to watch a launch... Triple drat.
I remember watching the first landing, want that feeling again! Dang it!

Could you tell her you're watching a car go faster than a car has ever gone?

5:36 PM
Yeah, I bet it will happen some time between 3-4.
If it happens today at all.

@Edlothiad How is that any better? You clearly are not married. :)

@geoffc Dang it, I've been made... *runs*

Another fun question, if someone wants to take it.

@Edlothiad Hhahahahah. :)

How long will it take the Tesla Roadster to beat the all time record for the fastest car?
I hit the rep cap today already, I'll give that one freely to whomever wants a bunch of reputation.

5:39 PM
If you don't mind, I'm now very curious

5:51 PM
pushed to 3:05 pm EST (2005 UTC)
weather geeks on r/spacex are pessimistic about the upper level winds dying down before the end of the launch window, for what that's worth

:( If it's tomorrow I'll miss it, shucks
3:05 pm EST means it can only be pushed back another 55 minutes before it's scrubbed?

yeah.

Newbie question: Is that 55 minutes before it must reach T-0 or 55 minutes before they're ok for launch?

I don't really trust /r/spacex with the wind, so...
It must launch by 4:30 I thought, it was a 3 hour window?

6:15 PM
Hmmm, okay then.
Yeah, it seems it was only 2.5 hours...

Are any of you guys subscribed to Astronomy Now or is this the wrong place to ask?

You can ask, and we'll let you know if there's a better place to ask.

@Edlothiad Astronomy isn't now. It's all in the distant past.#lightcone #Iknowitsabadjokesorry

6:35 PM
Uhoh just created, then deleted a question referring to the headline "SpaceX's First Falcon Heavy Rocket to Launch 4th Electric Car to Leave Earth"
4th passenger car, maybe. I count 3 (LR) +2 Lunokhod +4 Mars rovers...

I'd openend the link, but I don't know if uhoh wants it to stay hidden or not.

I'm going to rule that if it doesn't have seats designed for a human, it's not a "car"
waves sceptre, vaguely

Elon Musk has drove the car, it's a car...

Would it be rude to edit my question to extend to Lunar rovers, etc.

I saw the deletion, maybe it was the 4th Tesla Roadster?
#KSPaceNews Today is @SpaceX 's test flight of #FalconHeavy. This first launch will be taking Elon Musk’s #Tesla car to Mars orbit. It's launch window opens at 1:30 p.m. EST (18:30 UTC) . Launch webcast will go live about 20 minutes before liftoff. http://spacex.com/webcast
If I didn't know better, I woudl have thought that was a mission in KSP...

6:47 PM
The Falcon Heavy countdown clock has resumed, targeting liftoff at 3:45pm EST (2045 GMT). But another wind evaluation is planned in about 20 minutes. https://spaceflightnow.com/2018/02/05/falcon-heavy-demo-flight-mission-status-center/
I don't mean to get people's hopes up, but ^

Well, I've edited my answer to include the Apollo rovers, so...

@PearsonArtPhoto Admittedly hard to tell the difference!

@RussellBorogove Ah you're too quick!

I get that a lot :/

@RussellBorogove 7 blessings to you!

6:56 PM
> There is one collision avoidance cutout in the remainder of today's launch window at 3:56 p.m. EST (2056 GMT). The Falcon Heavy cannot launch at that time to ensure it does not get too close to another object already in space.
I had no idea they actually did that kind of check...

Surely they have to? They wouldn't just launch things and cross their fingers would they?

Space is really big.
The odds of any two objects being close to each other are really small.

But even in LEO, isn't there still just a ridiculous amount? Or is that just exaggerated by plots and such of it for the want to show each data point and therefore exaggerating each data point

There is a large amount, but...
The plots are really exaggerated.

That would make sense, things like this tend to skew my perception:

7:03 PM
I think a satellite will on average have a close approach (Within 100m) of another tracked object about once every 20 years or something.
About once a year at 1 km distance.

Ok, that's quite a gap.

There is something like 4000 tracked objects in space. Not that many really.

@PearsonArtPhoto 40,000 or 4000?

4000 satellite or boosters, about 20,000 total objects.

The collision avoidance margins are pretty big, I think, at least for ISS avoidance maneuvers they are. A 1-meter long piece of orbital debris will have like a 1km no-go radius to allow for errors in tracking, etc.

7:07 PM
That's for the ISS. And they only happen, what once every few years?
At 2:17 the call to fuel the rocket will be made.

The SpaceX live stream is saying 8:45 UTC/3:45 EST

Yeah, that's still the plan. I think they are going to try and go for it, but there's a high chance of falling outside the window.

@PearsonArtPhoto it appears your question, kindly stolen by me, has hit the HNQ

@Edlothiad Get ready for a rate cap!

I figured it would.

7:14 PM
@geoffc As the question asker that would take 40 upvotes! I don't know if the Falcon heavy craze will take it that far in the next 4.75 hours!
It's one of 4 Space Exploration questions on there now!

@Edlothiad So post an answer! Only half as many.

@geoffc @RussellBorogove has already posted an excellent answer, and everything asked on here is far beyond my expertise. I'll have to study and learn a bit more from the experts before I crank out any answers!

Wow, we are popular today!
I've noticed our view count has been going up for a while...

I have Steve Squyres to thank for bringing me here.

@Edlothiad That monster! has he no shame?

7:17 PM
What did he do to get you here?

@PearsonArtPhoto Shhh... The hostages are stil being held and he cannot say without getting them in trouble.

Huh, Musk is saying 2/3 or 50-50? " I feel like we’ve got a two-thirds chance of success, but in reality we only have a 50-50 chance.”"

Huh. A month ago we had one of the highest peaks in views, although we are close to taking over that with today.

I read his book Roving Mars, while I was interested in space and it's exploration before and always was a bit curious in it and fascinated by the engineering that goes on to make it possible, that really triggered a very curious bone in my body that just made me want to go hunting for more.

We actually passed the New Horizons view peak.

7:20 PM
@PearsonArtPhoto Are these stats from Mod tools, or public somewhere?

Loading propellants...
Mod tools.

@PearsonArtPhoto Good sign! They think it is likely.

Or they realize that they don't have much to lose at this point.

Pioneer plaque parody
Hahahahahaha.
No clue if this is real and on the Tesla, but dang funny.

7:39 PM
So how are the two side boosters going to land? Are there two LZs?

Yes
LZ-1 and LZ-2

@PearsonArtPhoto Two pads at LZ-1. The area is LZ-1 I think, not each pad...

Are they these two here? Or is this just LZ-1?
Ok so it is these two pads?

Yes
The black one is the first one, the smaller one is the second one.

Alright, exciting! I'm assuming they've mainly been using the black one, or even exclusively?

7:41 PM
Yes

I thought there were two different sets and they couldn't land that close. Hmm...

Ya, very close all things considered.

Well the animation made it seem like it was those two

T-1 hour.

trying to open the webcast (yes, I know it's not started yet), I get "this video is restricted. try signng in with a google apps account"
anyone else getting that?
I'm on my work PC, which might be why

7:53 PM
Seems to be working fine for me, Although I'm at home
Works in Incognito (not being signed in)

same results in incognito. probably a work thing. :(

Are there no mirrors elsewhere?

don't really want to go poking around sketchy youtube mirrors on my work machine. can't access the fan-run audio-only stream either
might be able to watch it on my phone, though

there's an official youtube and a SpaceX hosted version, I think

T-45:00
Loading LOX

8:03 PM
ah, found a local news site's stream. better than nothing

It will be hosted on YouTube, at T-0:15:00

gives me the aforementioned error messages, @Hobbes

@PearsonArtPhoto I wouldn't want to lose the vehicle due to out-of-spec weather. Or did you mean something other than 'they'll launch whatever the weather'?

No, but yo can't launch unless you fill the rocket.
If they had the rocket fueled, then they are somewhat committed to attempting.
I don't know what the scrub time is for a super chilled, but I think it is hours.
But right now, they can fuel the rocket, and if the requirements aren't met, they can always postpone. They can't launch much later in the day, so...
Make sense?
T-30:00

8:18 PM
yes

T-20:00
Didn't expect live video to be up already...
I can watch it, but not listen to it. Will listen later.
T-15:00
Is the video quality bad for anyone else?

The Youtube version looks very good here

Pretty good for me on the Spacex stream

Must be my network connection, so...

Ahhh I am excited

8:32 PM
Saw a previous launch, got a bit excited...

@PearsonArtPhoto They just called it LZ1 and LZ2 on the webcast, so I sit here corrected. :)

:-)
Occasionally I get these things right, even without sources.

@geoffc However they showed the two you described as opposed to two separate sites each with a large pad
@RussellBorogove I'm excited, I can't imagine how you guys are feeling

Wow, they are close to each other. Hmmm.

@Edlothiad The pic Pearson posted was correct and what they showed. The only question is one of nomenclature. Not sure there are ANY rocket landing facilities on the planet, that have more than one pad/site. :) Shuttle Landing Facility is one. Where else?

8:35 PM
Did I show a pic?

10 minutes to go!

@geoffc Shrug, I haven't the least idea

Not Pearson, pic was by edlothia. Oops.
1.2 million people watching the Youotube stream!

Wow.
That's like, what, almost 100x normal?

1.2 million ANYONE is pretty dang fine. They need to do some more advertising in here.

8:38 PM
camera view from inside the fairing: instagram.com/p/Be3m_LNgOYY

Don't panic!!!!!
Hahahahahahahahahahaha

And it will only increase as time goes on.

1.334 million now.
Wonder what Youtubes record is?

T-6:00

~8 million, when Felix Baumgartner did his skydive

8:39 PM
3 cores means 3 times the venting LOX.
Don't light a match down there.
Wonder if they decide to use sparklers like the shuttle did, but D4H doesn't?
@DylanSp Thanks.

at least, and that was back in 2012: bbc.com/news/technology-19947159

Probably some video game series or something

Anyone know how to grab the i mages from Instagram?

Biggest was actually the royal wedding.

A Giraffe birth had 232 million: dfw.cbslocal.com/2017/04/18/…

8:42 PM
Wait? I watched Dianna and Charles and it was NOT on Youtube. Whatcha talkin bout Willis?

@geoffc Right click on the image, click inspect, should be there in a div

1.64 million now.

This is the photo of the roadster above:
That giraffe birth was incorrect, was ~2 million at one time

Can you oget the other one please, with Don't Panic on the dash?

Lemme watch launch

8:45 PM
Who gets the AWESOME job of saying "Falcon Heavy is Go for lauch"

It's now the fastest car ever!
And of all time, now:

Max-Q is gonna be gorgeous!
With 27 engine plumes.
That is an awesome plume!
Alright!!!! Seperation!
Don't Panic!

!!!

2.3 million viewers.
1.5 min to booster landings

That was incredible!

8:53 PM
If both side boosters burned at the same time, they might get simulatenous landings!

boosters down! pretty much right at the same time
boosters landed, I mean

Oh baby!
Together, side by side! Beautiful!

second stage in orbit!

I was kinda hoping for fireworks, but oh my goodness that was gorgeous!

stll no word on the center core

8:56 PM
@Edlothiad The first time it landed was amazing. But this is better! Times 3!
Tesla does not technically advertise. But this is great fodder for Tesla!

Is the live stream going to end?

ended the stream without telling us what happened to the center core! aaaargh
my guess is it didn't manage the landing...although there was lots of cheering from the employees

Stream ended, wow...

@geoffc ^

Surprised a bit they didn't hold the stream for the second burn like they normally do.

8:59 PM
Stunned at how synced the side cores were in their reentry process

@PearsonArtPhoto yeah, me too.

Sorry, had my computer broadcasting to everyone at work, so...
Still, very neat.
It seemed they had some problems tracking the second stage.

I can understand them not holding it for 6 hours for the third burn, but still...

I'm slightly disappointed by the fact the streams ended without getting confirmation of the main booster, and the fairing recovery

@RussellBorogove I thought they were going to stagger them.
