From the Earth-orbiting International Space Station, flying some 225 nautical miles above the Caribbean Sea in the early morning hours of July 15, NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman photographed this north-looking panorama that includes parts of Cuba, the Bahamas and Florida, and even runs into several other areas in the southeastern U.S. The long stretch of lights to the left of center frame gives th

What can the growth of structure in the Universe tell us about how regular matter and dark matter scatter? The authors develop a simple framework and get model-independent constraints; read on for the answer.

Hmmm what's going on with the feed? LOL

@TildalWave You broke it!

6:09 PM
I didn't touch it, honest

@TildalWave It was very refreshing, in Provo, UT, at a TEENY tiny airport, seeing 2-300 people in line, to go see the inside of a B-29. And TONS of kids.
Nice to see the interest.
Last night, sitting in the lobby of the hotel with friends, EMT's come in from an ambulance. Was worried it was one of the B-29 guys, they were pretty old looking, some of them.
But was not.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17/MAS17) was a scheduled international passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. The Boeing 777-200ER crashed near Hrabove in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, about from the Ukrainian border with Russia on 17 July 2014, carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew members. This area is currently part of the ongoing 2014 insurgency in Donbass conflict zone. Initial reports stated that the Ukrainian government suggested that the aircraft was shot down at an altitude of by a surface-to-air missile. With 280 passengers and 15 crew members on board, this is the la...
sigh Another one :(

@Undo
@Undo I saw that it went down on the news... Shot down is bad news. 777 is a pretty big airplane too!

Yeah
295 people. Terrible

SAM against an airplane is really bad news for everyone.
Israel already requires counter measures on commercial airplanes. Get ready for that in the rest of teh world.
Converesly, Rafael has a fairly cheap DIRCM system for commercial air transports.

counter measures == flares?

IR - Diode lasers that detect the incoming missle start beaming energy at it to crash its seeker head.
DIRCM - Directed IR Counter MEasures.

6:40 PM
huh

Not useful against radar guided, which if hit at 30K feet is more likely than Manpad, which is typically IR.

Can Buk missile even hit something that high?
strike that, I thought Buk was handheld, I got wrong impression from a few feeds
@Undo Since when does Wiki cover news?

Meh, they have a crazy active community.
It's not really news, but it might as well be. They try to have up-to-date info for developing events.

@Undo Too active IMO
it happened today, that's news
and most of information coming in is still being gathered and a subject to interpretation
so no ordinary news, but sensationalist one

7:08 PM
I'm not involved enough in Wikipedia to care :P

7:35 PM
a missile? in space? where?

@Everyone Shot down MH17
passenger jet
But it was on the ground, not space :P

We're not sure.
