How far away is spiral galaxy NGC 4921? Although presently estimated to be about 310 million light years distant, a more precise determination could be coupled with its known recession speed to help humanity better calibrate the expansion rate of the entire visible universe. Toward this goal, several images were taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in order to help identify key stellar distance

@Everyone G'day sir! I've seen you active in ... you know where. Re that question... yeah, I know it's far from perfect, and I've tried working with OP to clarify it, but it got a pretty good answer in the meantime so I though oh bugger let's just leave it and I've added loads of info to the answer and deleted the comments.

no worries
barks Where did you see me active, Young Man?

@Everyone Where you had issues with that question. I was just following breadcrumbs

issues? I'm not even married!

thus the italics

Uh.. What do you mean, breadcrumbs?

4:41 PM
I talk in riddles tonight :) But I'm not allowed to talk about who flagged some question or why, so I won't be saying anything about your flag on that question because you felt it needed mod attention LOL

blinks
I need sleep, I think

I'm joking of course, of course I'm allowed to talk about it... that's why some flags show the author and others don't
nothing wrong with asking for a mod to additionally review something
on the site!!

Ah ...
Sorry /+: Not really registering things today - distracted

@Everyone What do you mean sleeping? We have two launches tonight, young man!

'm older than you; it's too cold to stay up

4:48 PM
@Everyone You are? No you're not! Not according to your profile you ain't

Of course I am

Just because I behave like a confused teenager that doesn't mean I'm a teenager ... I might be just doubly confused :P
@Everyone your profile says you're 37

Right

@Everyone That makes you 2 years younger then
I'm still one of the youngests popes in history tho :)

Nothing around that says it's the years of life that matter. Most people will agree it's the life in your years that matter more

4:51 PM
@Everyone so you're saying time runs slower for you?

(+: I forgot to tell you how cute the new grav is
Ngek. I run faster than time.

@Everyone @RoryA said it looks like I had skies over my shoulder LOL

I don't get it )+:

*skis sorry

Ah
It does look like skies. how did you come up with the graphics? ink-scape?

5:06 PM
@Everyone neah I never even used inkscape, is it any good?

(+: I was hoping you'd be able to make a recommendation.
What do you use?

I'm starting a data-collection thingy, so I can make nice graphs and things.

brb. Sir Dumptywants out

But it doesn't work :(

5:09 PM
@Everyone some ancient version of Paint Shop Pro mostly, and it comes with Animation Shop Pro too for animated gifs

Oooh! #protip: Trying to pass a .php file to sh doesn't really work too well.
Woohoo! Now every hour my server will be collecting:

- And a timestamp. You know, for stamping things.
And then I'll be able to make graphs and thingys of stuff.

5:23 PM
@Undo for stamping time you mean?

@TildalWave Or that.

upgrade them to spacetimestamp ... you know, so they're more politically correct
forget geotagging, that's last century stuff :)

:D
My goal is to make myself a psuedo-moderator stats dashboard.
The main issue is that I need to get the data :P

how are you plugged in, via SE API?

@TildalWave Yup, /info.

Just discovered that my chemistry teacher is trying to log everywhere we go on his site, with IP and UserID. Freakiness: 3.
Also discovered that he wants us to install a keylogger so that he can tell if we're paying attention to him. Freakiness: 33.
He also abuses HTML tables to display content. Freakiness: 34.
And he uses purple navigation bars! Freakiness: 10

@Undo heeeeeelllllll no
use a virtual machine if he enforces that

@JohnB I simply refused to install it.

that's the better option

(well, I installed it but sandboxed the crap out of it, including a little script I can turn on that would cause it to report that I am constantly typing abcdef... over and over and over really fast.)
(and I only attend his class on my machine that isn't used for anything)
An old iMac G4 we have sitting around that I use as a server monitor.

@Undo You should do what i did with my G4. Turn it into a refrigerated mobile beer tap.

6:35 PM
@DavidFreitag I would, except for two problems: (1) I don't drink beer, and (2) I have a better use for it :P

@Undo Mobile refrigerated soda tap?

Hmmm....
Now you're talkin'.

And you can still have a functioning piece of hardware. Mine is also a fileserver with three 2TB drives in it.

@DavidFreitag You completely overhauled the internals?

@Undo Ayep.
Micro ITX mobo with a mini PSU and a few HDD's and a second NIC, that's it.

6:37 PM
Did you get the display to still work?

It's a PC now, i gutted it.

Oh.
:(

Well, more to the point it's a linux box now.

There was one guy that overhauled the whole thing, made a hackintosh, and had it running ML.
@DavidFreitag That's better :D

With a 16GB SSD for the main drive.
@Undo Don't forget, PC is hardware, not software. Apple are both.

6:39 PM
@DavidFreitag I know... but when people say PC, they usually mean... the dark side.
But linux is great! I wonder if I could put Ubuntu on the G4?

@Undo I use windows on pretty much ever computer i own. Linux is on all of my various servers.
Possibly, it depends on which version it is and whether or not the CPU is a PowerPC
But even then i think most Ub releases have a PowerPC version

@DavidFreitag It's PPC, I know that.

Q: Mac G4 with no OS: can Ubuntu be used?

ToddI was given a Mac G4 without the operating system. It had Mac OS 10.4. Is there an Ubuntu version I can use for the Mac like there is for my PC? If so, what version? And are there any special tricks for Mac? Or is it fairly simple as it is for PC. (I'm not at all familiar with Mac, but the compon...

Just found it :D
Might as well try it...

I would burn a desktop edition and try running it without installing it first.

6:45 PM
Yup.
Think 12.04 is good?

Personally i would choose lubuntu instead.
Choose the "Mac (PowerPC) and IBM-PPC (POWER5) alternate install image" edition

Oh, great!

Otherwise Unity (the desktop manager for 12.04) is utter crap.

How big a CD do I need? Will 700mb work?

6:47 PM
Whoa, it's awful close.

Download says it's 691MB
But it'll fit.

696 MB.
:P
Can I choose to wipe the machine straight from the CD?

Awesome.

Grub will boot and you should get several options including "Try without installing" "Install" "Memtest" and a few other things.
You can even start the install from within lubuntu if you decide to.

6:49 PM
Awesome.

Should be a link on the desktop once you get in saying something along the lines of "Install now"

828 KB/s - 178 MB of 696 MB, 10 mins left

@Undo And yeah, i was looking at the alternate install one, my bad
Heh, i get 8MB/s down speeds at work :]

(no, not edited)

@Undo yeah but not to whichever server hosts lubuntu images :P

6:55 PM
Awesome, no?
@TildalWave No, that was only at WWDC that I got those :)

At long last, the first GTO attempt from SpaceX is today.

@PearsonArtPhoto Whoa, where's our chat event??!!??
Tildal?

@Undo Oh that doesn't count, I could brag with 10Gbps then when I worked for one of our local ISPs

Lol.
I actually crashed a few apps there because they counted on there being some delay between sending a request and getting info.

6:57 PM
@Undo Eww an apple developers conference? I hope you used protection.

@PearsonArtPhoto g'day sir!

@David Lol, no :)

We're throwing a launch party for it at work.

@PearsonArtPhoto I already ordered some exclusive snaps from the Banana river :)

6:58 PM
Launch in just under 4 hours. They should be starting to fill the tank with LOX soon, according to the timeline.

don't forget about the Soyuz/Progress one in about 1 and a half hours
@PearsonArtPhoto oh cool

@DavidFreitag To put the .iso on a disk, do I just drag it in and burn it, or do I need to do some kind of dance?

i think they have a mac version if you need it.

@DavidFreitag I already have Disk Utility :P

I'm following Spaceflight101 LIVE on Twitter for live updates, they usually have it all, sometimes more info than you get through other, official channels

7:01 PM
@Undo I'm not sure about Macs, but it needs to be burned, you can't just write the ISO to the disk

L-3 Hours 40 Minutes: At this point, first & second stage RP-1 loading should be beginning. Waiting for confirmation... #SES8.

Ok, great. That's what I needed to know.

You may also need to make it bootable, i don't know if the software you use will do that automagically or not.

If I burn the disk from the .iso, that should be enough, no?

Most likely

7:04 PM
@PearsonArtPhoto so if I read it correctly, there won't be any of those annoying holds on the countdown?

tries to think of why I would want to erase it after burning

Stress test?

I guess... seems a weird option.

I don't see an "Erase after burning" option..

@DavidFreitag Where are you looking?

7:06 PM
@Undo On the screenshot you just pasted in

@DavidFreitag very bottom checkbox.
Ohhh!! It says before!

@Undo You mean "Erase disk before burning"?

I really need to start reading stuff :P

I'd say :]

@DavidFreitag I put the disk in and restart the machine, right?

7:16 PM
@Undo Yar.

Good.

You might have to mash some of the function buttons to get it to boot from the drive though

ooh, shiny startup screen.
No button mashing was required.
@DavidFreitag Dang, it crashed :(

@Undo Oh?

@DavidFreitag A bunch of white text on black background.

7:25 PM
@Undo Doesn't sound like a crash to me...

--- Exception: 300 at tubler_detect_headphone+0x1c/0x50 [snd_powermac]
Looks like a crash. And nothing's happening

There she is, live from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan

@Undo Consult the Google. :\

@DavidFreitag One result.
:(

@Undo Did you verify the disk you burned?
@Undo Also, see this. It might have something usefull: wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCKnownIssues

@RhysW how else would I know if the wine is off?

C'mon you're not watching the launch stream? That ignition closeup was really cool

I just gave it to the people at Programmers, they are already plotting about how to use it to annoy their mods.
