Q: May I use a railway velocipede on used British railways?

user100347If a railway is still in use in UK, am I legally permitted to use a railway velocipede on it? (Or) Is it dangerous even if I can take it off the railway when I hear a train coming?

I can hardly believe this question is serious

Just how slow are the trains in the UK? Here in Germany, by the time you heard a train, it would already be way too late.

@Kyralessa they can get pretty fast here too! The answers already cover the legality of this (i.e. very much illegal), but this would also be an incredibly dangerous thing to do.

Downvoted. This is extremely dangerous. Besides information as that it is not allowed on railways in use is readily available online.

@Willeke I think the safety aspect is a reason for an up vote actually - in case of the remote possibility that there’s anyone else out there who has the same question and the same lack of an ounce of common sense

@Willeke Many, perhaps even most, of the questions here on Travel SE can be answered with a trivial Google Search. Do you honestly mean that 'readily available answers' qualify for a downvote?

@Kyralessa Main line trains running between the major cities run at up to 125mph (200kph) in the UK.

"Can I kill myself on a railway?"

@Tor-EinarJarnbjo, it is the safety aspect that rates the down vote.

This is just troling. Hop off when you hear a train? Sure, why wouldn't you be allowed to do that? Nevermind the hazards of the third rail...

@Willeke Wait, we have a mod downvoting because they don't like the question? (Which is essentially your only reason.) Isn't that the complete opposite of what this site is for, and what mods are for? Why in the world are you a mod?

@only_pro The question is pure trolling HNQ. You might as well ask if the UK Navy would let you fire the guns while touring HMS Belfast if you brought your own shells... you know, and promised to aim for an empty spot of the Thames.

@J... Maybe it's trolling or maybe it's not. Either way, it's a perfectly valid question. etmuse did the correct thing by providing an answer. There's no reason to downvote.

@only_pro I guess we disagree - I think this is junk and would be fine with plain deletion.

@AndyHames that is true, but there are some branch lines that are part of the UK national network where maximum speed limits are between 20 and 40 mph - redesigning sharp curves and gradients for higher speeds would be pointless, because of the short distance between stations.

I'm not so sure this is trolling, as the user has only asked one other question and it is also related to rails. Perhaps they couldn't find an abandoned railway to ride their velocipede and are looking for other options... (of course this is ridiculously dangerous and illegal, but I don't think the user is a troll)

@J... Some UK rail employees still use a modern version of the BUDA pump car shown on the OP's link, to do maintenance at sites where there is no easy road access. I usually see one such crew returning back to base in the evening several times a year, on a local branch line. Asking if one can do the same sort of thing as a private individual isn't "trolling" IMO.

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it's not a serious question.

"When I hear a train coming". You certainly have no experience with trains.

Trains in the UK go at 125mi/h (200km/h). I don't understand when you say "I can take it off the railway when I hear a train coming"? You would be lucky if you manage to jump away in time.

I have to laugh at the one guy suggesting this question is going to stop others "trying to do the same thing".... yeah and it's going to encourage a much larger fraction to now think of it as an option that didn't exist before. Voted to close.

@only_pro, I did not see a reason why as a mod I should take immediate action. I did see a reason why I as a person should down-vote. And why I should explain that vote.
