The world's largest sea sluice was officially opened today.
The second photo shows the moving of a spare door.
The sluice next to it, half open, was also the world's largest when it was built, in 1929.

@CowperKettle I think sometimes I'm inclined to comment that it's partly the price of having all sorts of gadgets handy. I mean, the consumer can't be entirely blameless. On the other hand maybe there was a couple of arseholes in history that are mainly responsible for whatever is wrong with the world right now, with regards to corporations and stuff. Honestly I think that not only do I not know enough to comment, I don't know enough to think about it.
@Cerberus sluice of life movies don't make much money anymore.
@Robusto here I think something weird is going on, because every few years we get a "proper" winter, with the snow and subzero degrees (celsius) and stuff. Then for something like four years nothing happens much in the winter. This year is one of those proper winters I think. At least this month has been.

@M.A.R. Me, I moved to New Mexico to escape snow and ice and endless cold. And by cold I mean too cold to ride my bike. I can still ride it most days in the winter here, but December and January often have weather that must be braved.
But back in Massachusetts they are cold, with snow on the ground, and are going to get hammered this weekend. The only exercise available would be clearing snow, and that is not the kind that relieves stress.

Here, the weather is quite warm for late January. It's now only minus 12°C
And will be minus 9C by afternoon, which is nice for jogging.
Bicyclists are everywhere in the streets.

@Robusto well our streets are barely fit for walking at the moment

@M.A.R. Too much ice?

"Happy 2021, my niggas". A graffiti I saw today on a temporary corrugated iron wall.
The poster in the lower left says "Rotation work. Salaries from 20 000 rubles". Hm. $270 per month. That's a true King's salary.
This one says жир (zhir), meaning "fat" or "lard".
The ones on the left say "zhirok", which is the hypochoristic, endearing form of "zhir".
Sometimes some guy with an air operated gun fires at windows in cars and buses just for fun. e1.ru/text/incidents/2022/01/27/70404560
A bus in Yekaterinburg had its window broken by a gunshot, when the passenger compartment was almost empty.
Probably some guy with an air rifle, sniping from a window for fun. Maybe some boy.

> When looking at an X-ray, clinicians are typically asked to identify any abnormalities and then classify them. During this visual search and recognition task, researchers have found that radiologists' decisions were based not only on the present image, but also on images they had previously seen

@CowperKettle isn't the ground frozen solid?

@M.A.R. It has been since about 10 of November
Snow starts thawing on March 20th at the earliest
I'm running in studded (cleated) boots for soccer, the cheapest there were at the store. They work just fine.
They probably cost some $12 at the factory door.
Here, about $20
And right after I come home, I put a couple of electric UV disinfection pads inside the shoes
They produce heat and glow.
I've no idea whether they actually work against germs and fungi
But I had so much trouble de-funging myself with powerful drugs several years back, that I go to a lot of lengths.
I have some bottles of antifungal spray too, to spray inside the boots now and then, just in case.
I really hated it when my nails started disintegrating because the fungi ate them.
After long bicycle rides, with feet constantly wet from getting into mud and puddles and bogs, I guess I really had a zoo on them.
I have some small pillows filled with silica, to get shoes dehydrated during trips.
Die, fungi, die.
AliExpress sells a roided up version with a timer. Nice. aliexpress.ru/item/1005001616166523.html
Also no idea whether it works.
Someone should take swabs and take them to a lab to check.
Back in my childhood, we just put valenki felt boots on the radiator
Russia's new law on electronic online elections has just passed first reading in the State Duma pnp.ru/politics/…
Once the bill is signed into law, it will be much easier to falsify electoral results.
I wonder if there's electronic online voting in elections in Iran. Or people have to go to voting stations in person.

@CowperKettle Hmm interesting, we shall see.
@CowperKettle We were told never to put any shoes or boots near heating.

@Cerberus Why?

6:48 PM
@CowperKettle I think because heat is bad for leather and glue?

7:22 PM
@Cerberus Ah! Yes. But felt boots had neither
They were completely made of felt
Valenki (Russian: ва́ленки, IPA: [ˈvalʲɪnkʲɪ]; sg valenok (Russian: ва́ленок, IPA: [ˈvalʲɪnək])) are traditional Russian winter footwear, essentially felt boots: the name valenok literally means "made by felting". Valenki are made of wool felt. They are not water-resistant, and are often worn with galoshes to keep water out and protect the soles from wear and tear. Valenki were once the footwear of choice for many Russians, but in the second half of the 20th century they lost most of their appeal in cities, due to their association with rustic dress. == Description == Valenki (synonymic a...

@CowperKettle okay so how on Earth do you actually jog on that?
@CowperKettle oh, used to have a pair of such shoes, but never took a liking to them
@CowperKettle athlete's foot?
Yeah, fungi are bastards. They're everywhere, and if they find a spot to grow, they're hard to get rid of.
@CowperKettle none. People have to manually vote every time the voting count actually matters. Back in 2020 they withheld the news of Covid having infected Iranian individuals until after an election. Then suddenly not only had people been infected, but they had also died.
@CowperKettle no hard feltings

Our government has done a bloody good job of disillusioning people this past decade. I do think they weren't insecure enough to pull crap like this back then. Most of my family from 10 years ago would probably call my family right now unbelievers.
Anyway some of the scariest infections are systemic mycoses. Most bacteria and protozoa can't hold a candle to fungi that find the host to be cozy.

9:07 PM
@M.A.R. I always find it strange how threatened some people feel when others don't share the same beliefs as they do.
