@Xanne A very good term for memorizing this sense of gored
I've added it to my Anki
@Cerberus Yes, a lot of posts on social networks etc. by doctors or would-be doctors
I'm not an expert so I'll just wait and see

@CowperKettle Just curious, why do you frequent those sites?

> A form of cannibalism popular in early modern Europe was the consumption of body parts or blood for medical purposes. This practice was at its height during the 17th century, although as late as the second half of the 19th century some peasants attending an execution are recorded to have "rushed forward and scraped the ground with their hands that they might collect some of the bloody earth, which they subsequently crammed in their mouth, in hope that they might thus get rid of their disease."
@Cerberus I don't know. Addictive
I tried abstaining, but my personal record is about 1.2 days
30 hours.

Some difficult hours, eh.

macaros is "blessed" in Greek.
We have the Russian name Makar (Макар)

1:24 AM
Could be from Greek?

Yes, it is from Greek.
It was very popular in the 17-18 centuries, almost vanished after 1917, and is now slowly returning
Currently is the 130th most popular male name in Russia

The most popular names of the last 20 years. gazeta.ru/social/news/2021/09/17/n_16549250.shtml
Alexander, Mikhail, Dmitry, Ivan, Daniil, Artyom.

Mostly fairly traditional names?
Not sure about Daniil.
But it's probably old.

From Ancient Herbrew דניאל
Daniel (Aramaic and Hebrew: דָּנִיֵּאל‎ – Dānīyyēʾl, meaning "God is my Judge"; Greek: Δανιήλ Daniḗl), the hero of the biblical Book of Daniel, is a noble Jewish youth of Jerusalem taken into captivity by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, serving the king and his successors with loyalty and ability until the time of the Persian conqueror Cyrus, all the while remaining true to the God of Israel. The consensus of most modern scholars is that Daniel is not an historical figure and that the book is a cryptic allusion to the reign of the 2nd century BCE Hellenistic king Antiochus IV Epiphanes.Six cities claim...

Yes, I know.
But I don't recall hearing it that much in Russia.
But that may be a coincidence.

I have a friend named Alice (Алиса, Alisa)
It came to Russia through Lewis Carrol
And grew in popularity due to Alisa Seleznyova, a sci-fi heroine of the late Soviet times
And the movie "Guest From the Future" in which a scholboy accidentaly travels to the future
Really brings up the late USSR, it grew shoddy and dilapidated. Poorly repaired buildings and poorly made movie props. In a stark contract to movies of the 1960s.
But a nice movie if you consider the target audience
A movie for kids
Alisa also features in this great sci-fi cartoon.
It is really great and worth watching.
The Guest from the Future movie suffers from the same drawback as the Harry Potter movie.
The boy playing the main hero is a dimmer character than some of the "bad" characters in the movie.
Like, Draco Malfoy overshines Harry Potter in Harry Potter.
I don't know how a movie director should go about picking the actor, or modifying the plot, to amend such a drawback
This one is a source of Russian memes.

@CowperKettle In Holland, we have two different numbers: deaths definitively assigned to Corona, and excess deaths.
The latter will contain a number of unassigned Corona deaths.

I've just now tonight heard at least three different pronunciations of omicron on the news. I therefore expect ELU rants and questions, perhaps rancid questions, about this "discrepancy" to show up in short order.

11:48 PM
@tchrist I have found that ELU tends to be very non-topical.
No controversies here about OED's WotY
