12:00 AM
@Cerberus I actually spent the bulk of the day playing Devil's Advocate against the community mods.
Minus the two hours of interruption for a violin lesson.

Was it worth your while?

It never is. Unless you mean the violin lesson, in which case it always is.

I see.

Alas, I would be transcribing the Mass in F minor instead, for we genuinely have to sing it next year, but I just don't have the score to transcribe it off of.
So right now instead I'm just transcribing Kommt, ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen for piano solo.
I'm only halfway in, and only have a week left because I want it published on Good Friday.
(And don't tell me that that was two weeks ago, because those who observe the calendar commonly believed to be correct will have observed that it wasn't.)

Do you use special software to transcribe scores?

12:05 AM
Yes, the software is called MuseScore.

Oh, I see.
Does it use gestures?

Gezondhijd.
Whatcha mean by that? I'm not Tom Cruise.
I mainly use the keyboard and the mouse.
Oh, their reply is just in.
> No, no, no. Basically on musescore unless you have a subscription you cant download and/or print anything out- And it looks like you have a subscription so this isn't a problem for you. But users like me who don't want a subscription and just want the score are out of luck. Basically, I've figured out a way to get the score for free without a subscription. I don't arrange any music.
Sorry for any confusion.
Well if the mods are watching, gotcha.
And if they aren't, their loss not mine.

Ah, that does make sense.
Something like this, except using the mouse.
Where you draw stuff.
I once saw a video of this using mouse gestures, but I can't find it any more.

Oh yeah you can use a touch display or a touch pen. You can even hook up a keyboard and just enter all the notes into the software simply by playing them.
I'm still thinking about that. At this point I'm just as fast simply typing in the note names on my laptop.
Like, a keyboard is a keyboard because it's a keyboard.

12:26 AM
And in lockdown times, getting up every couple minutes to walk from the laptop to the piano and back is only welcome exercise.

@RegDwigнt If you mean the range, I don't know for sure, but I suspect it would be a single octave. Basically you have a stopped tube with a mechanism to move the stop, so it should go from whatever low note to whatever high note an octave above that.

I see.

That's what it sounds like in my memory, too.

I think that guy in that one video above did have a bigger range.
I have zero ear training. I can't tell if that's two octaves or two and a half.
Also, I was genuinely surprised at all the articulations he got out of the thing.

@RegDwigнt Well, he was tonguing some and slurring (sliding) some.

12:30 AM
Anyways, the reason I asked was because earlier today someone posted a concerto for the slide whistle with orchestra. And I'm a sucker for such things. (Like, literally the other day I listened to that typewriter concerto for the billionth time because YouTube keeps suggesting it to me like once every month.)

Yes. And if YouTube suggests it, you must listen. That's the law.

So yeah anyway. Obviously the creator of the score had to cheat and use the flute soundfont. So I kept wondering how much of it would actually be playable on a slide whistle.

BTW, Frazier mentioned Osip Mandelstam again in the context of visiting Twin Rivers (?) Penitentiary in Vladivostok.
I guess that's where Mandelstam spent his final years.

I haven't listened to the whole concerto yet, but the first movement now seems doable to me, ambitus-wise, and also articulation-wise. I'm still undecided on the projection. At times he has like the whole woodwind and strings sections as accompaniment.
@Robusto yes he died in a transit camp there. Was supposed to get taken to a Gulag.

Well, I don't really know. That will have to be my final answer. Most woodwinds have that octave of fundamental and the rest handled with harmonics.
With the break at the octave.

12:34 AM
Not so much years, like the last two months IIRC. Like in December he got ill and January or February would've been his birthday, and he died just a week short of that.

The clarinet, of course, breaks at the twelfth, which makes clarinetists not only odd but oddly magical.

Actually, I was wondering if that was the purpose of the weird notation I posted the other day.
Where was it again, sec.

I have no idea how they play those things, with their stacks and stacks of side valves &c.

Which part of the notation?

12:36 AM
This might actually make sense if you're playing it on a pan flute, and don't have a high G-A-B and instead have to go down to overblow.

You mean the X's?

@Robusto the octava altas.
No the Xs is just percussion.

Yes.
The ottava just means play it an octave higher.

Anyway I know nothing of pan flutes. Can't you just take a pan flute that goes that high.

But that's a weird way to use that.

12:37 AM
Is me point.
And this is the only explanation that I can think of where it would make a modicum of sense.

You don't need, like, any leger lines to play the octave G.

But this is MuseScore, so it's safer to go with Occam.

Well, now that I think of it, that might be right. If it's a pan flute that doesn't have the G in its pipe stack, you would have to overblow the octave.
And the world makes sense again.
I love when that happens.

Well anyway. I'd just indicate the ambitus at the beginning of the piece, so the musician picks the flute that covers it.
Also, my money is still on it being a simple rip off the original N64 MIDI. There's weird shit like that in there all over the place. Every time I do that myself (though I mostly do SNES), I have to correct every other note manually. Might as well enter it all from scratch, frankly.

I suppose.
@RegDwigнt Isn't that what horn players used to do in the days of valveless horns? You'd get a clef and pick the horn to match?

There's, like, always two bars of rest at the beginning. And the time signature is usually 4/4 no matter what the actual signature is. And there's like flutes playing chords and shit like that. And I won't even mention that an Ab is the same as a G#.
@Robusto right! Very much so.
You actually have that in the Symphonie Phantastique, where Berlioz uses like three different horns if I recall. Well at least two. One in Eb and one in C or F I think. The third one, no idea.

@RegDwigнt You should make a MuseScore group called the N-Harmonix!

There is one. Not with this inventive a name. But yeah. A bunch of people talking nothing but enharmonic spellings.
Constantly bickering whether a Cbbb is okay as written. I shit you not.

I'd almost prefer you to be shitting me in this case.

Eb and C.
Well what do you know. Uploaded April 19th. Now I know what I'm watching for the next eight hours.
I'm actually subscribed to that channel. And I think we discussed some of his Ravel or Scriabin or Isle of the Dead or something.
But I got no notifications of these here.
I only get notified of typewriter concertos.
@Robusto that's what I occasionally troll them with by saying. Your sheet music is instructions for musicians. If they can't fucking read what you write, you might as well not write it.

1:10 AM
Word.

Of course the entire rest of the community I troll by saying "there's no A flat in an E major triad".
And the only — the only — reply I ever get is "i dont get it can u explain pls"
Either which way, it's both the same audience, age- and experience-wise. The Cbbb kids just think that it makes them very super much cooler than the rest.

Leet-speak for would-be musicians/composers?

Nobody on MuseScore is a would-be musician.
The three and a half people that are actually genuine musicians are actually genuine musicians. And the rest wouldn't be caught dead holding an instrument.
Same for composers, alas.
Mostly it's for twelve-year-old girls to complain that their ex is a jerk, and for eight-year-olds to brag how they're lying to their mom and their mom is too stupid to notice lol.
Apr 7 at 22:48, by RegDwigнt
Like, the other day one of them posted a video of an underage girl getting shot in the face. Titled "try not to laugh". And everybody commented "lol".

1:28 AM
@RegDwigнt Dafuq? You mean really shot, like with a gun?

Nah, worry not, it was an animated cartoon, so that makes it perfectly fine I've been told.
Yes, really shot like with a gun to the face.

A cartoon of that?

The only comments that didn't say "lol" complained that it was blocked at their school.
@Robusto basically a doctored-with scene of Moana where the big dude then shoots her.

Still anti-social behavior. I suppose they think they are merely puerile.

To one of those who complained it was blocked at their school I took the liberty of replying "Rightfully so. And the OP should be banned from this site as well."
Which got me into trouble for being a horrible bully.

1:31 AM
Can you flag the fucker?

@Robusto oh yeah make no mistake it's a Columbine in the making.

This world is fucked.

@Robusto I did. It was still up ten days later. And then I gave up checking.

Can't they go on TikTok for that shit?

@Robusto there's 14-year-olds on there discussing world politics and complaining that they can't vote for Trump now, but as soon as they can they will.
@Robusto is what I keep asking. But you have to be very diplomatic lest you be blocked. But if you're very diplomatic, nobody understands what the fuck you're saying.
You have to be blunt. But you can't be.
So I just shrug, close the browser and transcribe some Bach instead.

1:34 AM
Not worth the time.
Life is too short to deal with idiots.

It's not my highschool they'll be shooting dead. Sucks to be so horribly cynical, but the choice is not mine to make.
Half of them can't even use the site according to the ToS. But when I point that out to the mods or stuff, the mods are like shut up, and the staff just don't read it.
For that matter, you can't use TikTok below the age of 13 either. Or YT or Twitch. But everyone's like yeah whatever. Who cares about laws. And when YT can get away with saying that, why shouldn't MuseScore.

Kids these days, just look at the Beloit mindset list.
I just tried to and found it has been redesigned. Ouch. Still: For incoming students, the world political stage has always been post-9/11; Vladimir Putin has always been the leader of Russia, Tayyip Erdogan has always been leader of Turkey, and the United States military has always been involved in Afghanistan.

Angela Merkel has always been the chancellor of Germany.
And who can even name the German president. (Not many Germans can. True story.)

1:57 AM
Das glaube ich. The big search engine gives the second suggestion under "president of Germany" as "vs. chancellor."
And then all the Godwin points.

I might be able to name all the chancellors if I give it a proper think, possibly almost in the correct order as well. But Presidents? Not even the last five I don't think.
There was Rau, Köhler and Wulff. Then, um. Gauck.
Now Steinmeier, but I have no idea if there was someone in-between him and Gauck.
Oh and Herzog was before Köhler but after Rau (I think?), but I don't think Köhler immediately followed Herzog.
Ugh.

What is the term, I'm embarrassed to ask.

Five years.
But Köhler gave up after like three. And Wulff was chased off after like two.
Herzog was like two terms maybe? Rau was like forever.
But that's, like, still in my living memory. I'm not starting in 1945 here.
More like 1990s and on.

Stimmt ! Outside of my content area by just a few mountains.

The chancellors are easy. Because their terms are shorter by a year, but they usually stick around for many more. Kohl served four terms. 16 years. Then Schröder served almost two. And then Merkel for another four. So that's like 40 years covered right there.
Fuck me I'm old.

2:06 AM
Five years is a decent presidential term length. Anything less is kind of silly, it's in and out.
Although the upside to that brevity has been visible.

I think it also makes some sense that it's off by a year from the other cycles. So you are guaranteed some stability even after a government change.
And vice versa. When the President goes, the government both stays and has been around for long enough for you to have gotten used to it.
It's only in-sync every 20 years, unless of course a Köhler or a Wulff screws it up by leaving early, but that was extremely unusual, or even unprecedented I want to say.

Logical cycles and stability?! Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
I'm old and should stop reading through the mindset lists: "The primary use of a phone has always been to take pictures."

I suppose.
I think we still have the rotary phones back home, unless my mom threw them away. Which she probably has.
Well anyway, that's me for tonight. It's four in the morning here and I have a choir rehearsal tomorrow.
See y'all latorz.

Char cloth, also called char paper, is a material that is used as tinder when lighting a fire and is the main component in a tinderbox. It is a small swatch of fabric made from a natural fibre, such as linen, cotton or jute, that has been converted through the method of pyrolysis into a slow-burning fuel of very low ignition temperature. Pyrolysis is defined as "a thermochemical decomposition of organic material at elevated temperatures in the absence of oxygen”. Although this material is usually made from swatches of organic fabrics, campers and outdoor enthusiasts have also discovered that a...
Interesting, even Multitran has no Russian translation for this
Russian army has been ordered to start returning troops back from the training areas
Thus, most likely no war.
Each day with no war is a chance for Ukraine to pull itself out of the corruption hole.

I went shopping and noticed this guy
I called him a Velo-Nazgul
Well, not aloud of course, but inwardly

@CowperKettle: Do you have stonefruit where you are? Frazier talks about it. I can't remember the Russian name for it, begins with a K though.
Also, he says Krasnoyarsk has the most beautiful women in the world, and more of them than any other city he's ever been to. Also that they frequently get sold into sex slavery by organized crime.
He traveled there in the '90s, I think, but I doubt organized crime has abated much since then.

In botany, a drupe (or stone fruit) is an indehiscent fruit in which an outer fleshy part (exocarp, or skin, and mesocarp, or flesh) surrounds a single shell (the pit, stone, or pyrene) of hardened endocarp with a seed (kernel) inside. These fruits usually develop from a single carpel, and mostly from flowers with superior ovaries (polypyrenous drupes are exceptions). The definitive characteristic of a drupe is that the hard, "lignified" stone (sometimes called "pit") is derived from the ovary wall of the flower. In an aggregate fruit, which is composed of small, individual drupes (such as a...
@Robusto Russian women are generally considered very beautiful.
When I see some footage from the UK, I am amazed at how many woman seem plain to me compared with Russian women I see in the streets.
@Robusto A kind of drupe starting with K, and edible?

@CowperKettle Is костянка the word?
@CowperKettle Yes.

@Robusto Kostyanka is the translation of drupe

Grows on the ground, like a strawberry, but tart and sweet with a hard stone in it.

It's not a particular species, but just a generic term for all kinds of drupes

1:14 PM
Ah.

Rubus saxatilis, or stone bramble, is a species of bramble widespread across Europe and Asia from Iceland and Spain east as far as China. It has also been found in Greenland.The green stems are 20–60 cm tall and covered with minute needle-like prickles, and leaves are usually compound with three leaflets. The spherical fruit is red and 1–1.5 cm in diameter, and contains large pips. == Description == The stone bramble is a perennial plant with biennial stems which die after fruiting in their second year. It sends out long runners which root at the tip to form new plants. The stems are rough with...
Could it be this? In Russian it's Kostyanika

That sounds more like it.
Four syllables instead of three.
Because I'm a musician I remember beats more easily than phonemes.

I have a terrible memory for plants. I remember getting F grades in my biology classes, and all the classroom rolling on the floor laughing when the teacher showed me pictures of plants and I tried to guess their Russian names.

Haha. I can't remember plants and flowers well either.

I have added about 50 different plants to Anki to remember them.
With pictures.
For instance, bullrush
With bits of poetry to easier memorize them.

1:17 PM
I think you mean bulrush.
Bulrushes is the vernacular name for several large wetland grass-like plants in the sedge family (Cyperaceae). The name is particularly applied to several sedge family genera: Cyperus, the genus which includes the plant species likely referred to in the Biblical account of the Ark of bulrushes Scirpus, a genus commonly known as bulrushes in North America, which in previous circumscriptions has also included species now classified in the genera: Blysmus Bolboschoenus Scirpoides Isolepis Schoenoplectus TrichophorumOutside of the sedge family, the name is used for Typha, a genus in the famil...

> Where will-o'-the wisps and glow-worms shine,

Like a wild beast in his lair.
In this particular poem it was bullrush

Who's that?

The Slave in the Dismal Swamp
H.W. Longfellow

It's bulsrush everywhere, as in the biblical story of Moses found in the bulrushes.
@CowperKettle AH.

Later I learned that "Dismal Swamp" is the name of an actual swamp

1:19 PM
Heh.

I memorized this poem by heart in 2012

Nice.

The Great Dismal Swamp is a large swamp in the Coastal Plain Region of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, between Norfolk, Virginia, and Elizabeth City, North Carolina. It is located in parts of the southern Virginia independent cities of Chesapeake and Suffolk and northern North Carolina counties of Gates, Pasquotank, and Camden. Some estimates place the size of the original swamp at over one million acres (4,000 km2). Lake Drummond, a 3,100-acre (13 km2) natural lake, is located in the heart of the swamp. The lake, a remarkably circular body of water, is one of only two natural...

@RegDwigнt A company that links investors with entrepreneurs to possibly invest money in their fabulously high return startup idea.
@Xanne Yeah I wasn't sure of the timing, of when the poverty reduction measures really started showing progress. But Deng was the beginning.

@CowperKettle It's not nice to talk about Holland that way, you know.
Oh, it's another swamp.

@Cerberus LOL
I never thought of Holland as a swamp
I usually imagined it as fields of flowers

@CowperKettle If we stopped maintaining the dikes, it would return to the swamp it always was.

@Robusto Yes, I checked. It's bulrush. And the quote I quoted is mangled.
The Slave in the Dismal Swamp - here's the good version
> In dark fens of the Dismal Swamp
The hunted Negro lay;
He saw the fire of the midnight camp,
And heard at times a horse's tramp
And a bloodhound's distant bay.

> Where will-o'-the-wisps and glow-worms shine,
In bulrush and in brake;
Where waving mosses shroud the pine,
And the cedar grows, and the poisonous vine
Is spotted like the snake;

A good poem because it conjures up images in one's mind.
I so much hate the rhymeless, imageless, whining 20th century poetry in English.

You mean late?

@CowperKettle ...growing in very damp soil
kind of marshy

@Mitch so just Y Combinator, then.

poor building location

It's not marshy now, because the mills pump day and night.
And day again.

@RegDwigнt yeah but no. kind of Y combinator adjacent.

And also in between.

So our exports cause a ton of greenhouse emissions.

I barely know what I half way heard

1:52 PM
I received email with the following sentence:

"Thank you for the clarification. Just need me detailed information next time."

What does this mean: "Just need me detailed information next time" ?

@Cerberus how about breaks for tea?

@Hairi "me" probably should be "more"

@Hairi I would read that as "I just need more detailed info".

Maybe it's just a kind of Southern slang. "I need me some more info next time".

@CowperKettle Yeah. The way you spelled it is a word, though, but it means to charge at someone and knock them off their feet.

1:52 PM
With "me" used in a non-standard way.

This is from American native English speaker

Or maybe "Just send me more detailed info".

I though she must not be mistaken

typos happen

@Hairi Looks like a typo.

1:53 PM
Well whatever they meant to say, the meaning is the same every which way.

hypos tappen

@Cerberus nice. so all those tribes are trudging through, well, I won't use the word swamp, but, really mushy soil -all- the time.

Yes I guess what she meant. I just wondered - probably this is a normal sentence and I just dont understand it

Well it could be but for that you would have to have more of their writing.

Now I understand it was probably mistype. Thank you all.

1:55 PM
Yeah I'm with Matt on this, myself.

@Mitch You're a few thousand years out of date.

Buffaloes don't live that long.

@Hairi It could be she was thinking of one sentence, then changed her mind in the middle of writing it to another sentence. That happens a lot. Both sentences were presumaly grammatical but she forgot to edit the mix up out.

Especially not when they get buffaloed by buffalo buffalo.

By the way, since when are our names no longer shown in chat?

1:56 PM
Since you downloaded one browser extension too many.
Them's showing fine for me.

It seems to me that in this chat you are all fluent in English .
I thought it is more for guys like me - learners :)

@Cerberus I get that a lot.

@Hairi well learners have to learn from someone. I can't learn the violin from someone who doesn't play the violin.

Not complaining. Thanks god we have such place :)

1:57 PM
@Hairi Try English Language Learners: ell.stackexchange.com

@Hairi For learners, there is this site:

@Hairi Just so you know, you can't learn violin here

And we're not just fluent in English. Many of us are fluent in several languages.

@Cerberus yeah that happens to me occasionally. On Vista. When @MattE.Эллен eats all my 3MB of RAM again.
On a proper computer that does not seem to happen.

@Hairi Also we just talk about anything anyway

1:58 PM
I never talk about anything. I always talk about something.

@Robusto Cool

@Hairi yeah we're all non-native speakers here. Especially @Mitch. And @MattE.Эллен is like from Newcastle, so he keeps silent most of the time.

Me, I'm only really fluent in English. The other languages are serviceable but compare in brightness as the moon does to the sun. In other words, I couldn't write poetry in them, unless we lessen the requirements for poetry .

@RegDwigнt not a Geordie, me. I'm a southern softy

@RegDwigнt :)))

2:00 PM
@Robusto I have good news for you. Those requirements have been lessened.

@RegDwigнt Good. I'll get right on that. Just as soon as I do everything else I need to do first.

This is at 90% zoom.

@MattE.Эллен I know you aren't. You're a pesky Cockney, you.

80%.
So it will have to do with window width.

Download more RAM.

2:02 PM
Could one of you make your window much narrower and see what happens to our names?

@Cerberus The same thing happens when I reduce the window size.

Yes, when I set my screen to landscape instead of portrait, I see the names again even at 100%.
@Robusto OK, thanks.

That's their way of using CSS declarations to shorten the names.

It's strange, because there is enough space.
This fixes it.

2:06 PM
@RegDwigнt LOL, "Come, you daughters, help me complain"?

@RegDwigнt Merci.
Looks perfect.
Don't change it.

@Robusto lament.
You pulling my leg now. It's the opening of the St. Matthew Passion.

@RegDwigнt I know.

I know that you know.
Let me think.

I search high and low for things to laugh about in chat.
Often I am disappointed, but not this time.

2:08 PM
I think to make it "complain" you could do "mich beschweren".

I should think we're laughable enough.

That would be quite funny.
@Cerberus NOU

@RegDwigнt Sounds good. Can you do that?

I'm trolling MuseScore enough as is.

@RegDwigнt Apparently, though, not harder than those who don't realize they are trolling it.

Her mit euch, Tussen, laßt uns shitstormen.
Now I just need to write 90 bars of ten-voice counterpoint to go with that and we're golden.

Ich beschwere mich über Trolle.

Du bist schon schwer genug.

Danke.

Gern geschehen.
Did you watch that St. Matthew video in German/Japanese/English? I forgot to ask.
> With no warning at all, in the first fifteen seconds alone they switch from English to German to Japanese.
And it goes on like that for twenty minutes.

@RegDwigнt Yes. But I have to go, I'm late for my ride. I'll discuss later.
I have to go go.
Laterz.

2:17 PM
CU!
I'll go look into the Gloria for the choir rehearsal tonight.
Oh wait, it's the Credo, actually. Ugh. That's even worse!

Till Lindemann have sung the Russian WWII song "My Favorite Town". It's a kind of "White Cliffs of Dover", only in Russia.
A song describing how good it would be to return to your favorite town after the war.

@CowperKettle do you mean 'Dover Beach'? Is that what it was about, going home after the war?

@Mitch Yes, probably, I just recall this song always mentioned on BBC TV when it still aired in Yekaterinburg
A kind of song loved during the WWII
There are several songs that people came to love in the USSR during the war, including this one (on the video above). Probably Lindemann knows Russian.
I know nothing about Rammstein. Besides their old "Du Hast" video.

Hi, I need a second opinion or some advice, I wrote "[...]all drivers, or enough drivers[...]" in a document, and someone gave me feedback saying that I have to change it to "[...]all drivers, or enough number of drivers[...]". It sounds weird to me, but I can't pinpoint what the problem is, or if it really is valid. It sounds so off. Is this second one correct? If not, how do I explain the problem with the second version?

@JackOfBlades You are correct, this other person is not.
When the word enough comes before and modifies a noun, the noun must be either plural or uncountable; I would say it is not used before a singular, countable noun like driver.
The reason is that enough signifies a quantity, which can either be "this many" or "this much"; you can say enough drivers (plural), enough water (uncountable), but not ?there is enough child at the party: if you do, it suggests that child is uncountable, e.g. a type of meat to be served to the guests. And *there are enough child is simply ungrammatical.
An alternative could be a high enough number of drivers, where enough modifies the adjective high before it; but enough drivers is less clunky.
