9:00 PM
Why is Ashworth always trying to pick a fight with me? And who appointed him hall monitor anyway?

@Robusto with me everyone
It's just who he is, an old, grumpy man.

@Cerberus So it would appear. My answer was from 8 years ago, btw.
He has something like a 5:1 ration of down votes to up votes. Perhaps he was weaned on a dill pickle or something.

Some people are like that.

Come again?

@Robusto and I like that his comments boil down to "you're not wrong, I tried really hard but I can't justify calling your answer wrong, but here's some random how or why that you missed"

9:05 PM
@M.A.R. And you know he did try that hard to find a reason to downvote.

I echo when I'm tired.

@Robusto I think that's excusable if you're a masochist and frequent SO's main page (or ELU's, for that matter)

@Robusto You understood understood he said

@Cerberus You should get more sleep, doggy.

Watched Shawshank Redemption today

9:06 PM
@Mitch You floated in here just to say that that?
@M.A.R. IMDB's favorite film.

@Robusto Yes

@Robusto I always should.

Pretty great film TBH, but I dunno, how do you pick a 'best'?

@Mitch You you.

@Cerberus Dare dare you

9:07 PM
@Mitch You you.

I like Cerb's starred message out of context

@M.A.R. Yeah. Like people asking me if I have a favorite song. I have like 15,000 tracks on my phone currently, plus Spotify and other venues, so how in the hell am I going to choose a favorite?

@M.A.R. "Why do they call you 'Red'?" "Because I'm Irish"

In fact I think movies like this are their own testimony to not being the 'best', they're often a 'best'.

@Mitch They call him Red because you're Irish?

9:09 PM
@Robusto OK man lighten up...just name the top thousand then.

@Mitch It's whichever song I'm listening to right now.

@Robusto That would make more sense than he movie

So a man going through a river of shit and then staying clean, yeah Shawshank is the best movie about that probably.

@Robusto Sometimes I choose badly so That's not always the case for me

Mitch tries to lobotomize chat again.

9:10 PM
@M.A.R. Cmon... it was -raining-

@Mitch he still had all his limbs

@M.A.R. Oh, the one about civil society, thanks.

@Robusto bettern meds

@M.A.R. I put it on my "guilty pleasure" list. I like it, but I hate myself a little bit for liking it.

@Robusto why? Because it's a King adaptation?
There aren't many reasons I can think of for hating liking it

9:11 PM
@M.A.R. True, you don't want to get a cut swimming through all that

@M.A.R. Nah. I like Stephen King a lot of the time, but he has his limitations. He really doesn't write women well at all, for example.

I find Joan a neat name for some reason

@Robusto the only woman in that movie was the poster

@M.A.R. Especially when it comes before Jett.
@Mitch What about his murdered wife?
Conspicuous in her absence.

@Robusto I think I agree, but I'm definitely not that immersed in the little universe in his mind

9:13 PM
@Robusto I don't think there was an actress on screen for that

@Mitch so the guy was doing it with a guy with makeup?

@Robusto another in a long line of artists who have invested heavily in eyeliner

That was illegal back then.

@Mitch I wasn't talking about that movie in particular. The conversation had broadened, in case you hadn't noticed.

I think.

9:13 PM
@M.A.R. look man I wasn't looking that close
@Robusto too fast for me between the statement and response

@Mitch Maybe you should post a speed limit in chat.
I mean, I can certainly go slower.

Typing with your tongue is difficult when you have horns.

If you're going by.a picture, it's super easy because the picture is flat

Oh so you're one of THOSE people

Yes

9:17 PM
table flip
Can't be bothered for the real thing on mobile

Goddamit. Every time I play Risk or Monopoly

Or that 2000-piece puzzle
On another note, I wanna watch Mandy some time

Mandy Patinkin?
Mandy Moore?
Mandy Thursday?

No the Nic Cage Mandy
Mandy the dandy
It's apparently gonna be something like this century's Face/Off
Who needs sitcoms when you have Nic.

"Red is catapulted into a phantasmagoric journey filled with bloody vengeance and laced with deadly fire."

9:21 PM
Told you

@M.A.R. Travolta and cage should both have gotten Oscars for that movie

Oscars are overrated

OK then

Sadly, they're also overrated by the people in the industry probably
Except for Bay

Travolta and Cage should both have gotten paid for that movie

9:23 PM
Morricone never won a single Oscar
Then they had to give him two because they felt bad about it
@Mitch I think the journey is more important

Planet of the Apes never got an Oscar

Jealousy
Zack Snyder's Justice League never won an Oscar
OK that one is the system working

Wait... they made a movie?
When did that come out?

Yeah apparently it's its own thing
@Mitch couple of months or weeks ago, I'm not that good at tracking time

Comic book movies have their place but...
I have never cares a good goddam about Batman or Superman or Aquaman
@M.A.R. Time, like the Oscars, is overrated.

9:26 PM
Literally every shot is him black-and-whiting Whedon's oversaturated crap, and adding a couple of origin stories, and Henry Cavill's face doesn't look hilarious
It's still sorta funny.
@Mitch 4.9 out of 5
And it's 242 minutes

@M.A.R. oh

Indeed oh

you're joshing me right?

Lol it's such a clusterfuck if it wasn't for the fanboys and girls.

Superman - all powerful and always wins. Should be called Victoryman.

9:30 PM
@Mitch I wish there was one good DC movie after Nolan, but alas

Batman - a bunch of cool gadgets and a car, has a valet, is an orphan. So what?

@Mitch and totaaaaally dies in the first frigging Avengers thing the heroes do. Totally.

Aquaman - plumbs the depths of who the fuck cares.
Imean you have to go swimming to appreciate anything he does.

@Mitch sadistic billionaire who smacks petty thugs in corners with million-dollar gadget that could have built schools and roads instead.

I mean I like swimming. But every so often in the summer. Not while watching a goddam movie

9:32 PM
@Mitch bulletproof, has tattoos

@M.A.R. ???

@Mitch Snyder killed Superman in the first film of this "universe", BullvShit
I think you mentioned you've watched the movie?

@M.A.R. Oh. Once again a reference to something I can't remember well because I haven't seen it or plan to.

Then Superman is revived no problem to save the day in this Peter Jackson movie

@M.A.R. I have done no such thing
@M.A.R. as an Ewok?

9:35 PM
Batman v. Superman

or troll or whatever movies Jackson makes

@Mitch I think this sums it up nicely. When asked how dying felt, superman says "itchy".

sounds tragic
moving
i'm crying already

Crawling

good riddance

9:36 PM
I don't cry when I itch
Not often

but when I do, I ask for benadryl

Also another Oscars fact: They threw every one of the trash Star Wars sequels an Oscar at least.
@Mitch he sounds British and far away
One won two? I dunno
Also fact: TV shows are where it's at.
Speaking of superhero adaptations, Daredevil is a pretty bumpy ride.
Season 2 was so bad it killed the show.
Season 3 is so good it makes you sad at the cancellation
But the problem is so much happens at S2 that you can't just skip it

@Cerberus well, how could they? instant rimshot
Uh, why is @MattE.Эллен always the last thing on my clipboard.
Also since when does he's has a period in his name.
@M.A.R. oh same here. Heard good things about it on Half in the Bag.

9:54 PM
@RegDwigнt Tsk, tsk.

On the plus side, the average American will get 142% smarter once Ben Shapiro passes away.
If the average American can wait for that long.
Always look on the bright side of stats!

Him I do not know.

no big loss

@Cerberus you should be so lucky.
Someone posted something earlier today I think.
All his shit is like that.

Say what you will about Nazi's, but at least they're consistent

10:04 PM
Well that's not the thing. The thing is that he's literally too stupid to even make a solid Nazi argument.

@Mitch It is no stable democracy.

He could stop for a split second and think, and he'd have one. But that's too much work. What he picks instead basically amounts to standing in the middle of the marketplace and shouting "I'm a nazi nazi nazi, a nazi is what I am".
Like, that's not even an argument at all.

@Mitch A fun story.

@Cerberus on that note, when are you planning to read the Asimov in your tab No. 415274993.

Oh, uh.
When I get to it hehe.

10:21 PM
@Cerberus so I've been thinking about that for a while but in the end it's kinda a purely academic point really.
A democracy is only as stable as the society itself.
But the same is also true of a monarchy. Or an oligocracy. Or whatever China wants me to call it that they have. Or any other system.
Stability trumps all.
And democracy, by design, is much more unstable than the others. Because everyone is expressly free to completely change their opinion, and because there's constantly a new generation of voters growing up ready to declare any and all values of their parents nil and void.
So by design it is easier for a stable democracy to slip into stable totalitarism or whatever, than the other way round.
As long as China are doing as well as they are, there's no point in dispatching of the party. Just like for as long as the Netherlands are doing as well as they are, there's no incentive for you to dispatch of the king.
But even in the stablest democracy you'll always have people voting Genghis Khan. Simply because they're dissatisfied. Or because they're still just kids trolling for teh memez.
@Robusto brace yourself, this is my stupidest question yet. Do you have an idea on the ambitus of the slide whistle?
I've checked the wiki but the wiki sez nothing.
So now I'm just watching random videos on YouTube trying to figure it out somehow. There must be a smarter way.
Short of buying one, that is.

10:47 PM
@RegDwigнt Now that guy was a real leader.

@Mitch I didn't want to invoke Godwin. Or Trump.

@Cerberus If it wasn't clear, I didn't -mean- to do it, it's just that when you tell a little kid to relax while jabbing him with a needle, he may not relax.
The best part is that I didn't spray myself.
Little satisfactions.

I thought a kid in English was an it.

@Cerberus Oh. huh. Was democracy one of the criteria?

Well yeah it was. It literally said "I think most rich countries are still fairly stable democracies. "
Like. It was the only criterion apart from the stability. Duuude.

10:50 PM
It's not like China was the most stable over the past hundred years. But my expectation going forward is that it'll change little.

Tbh, nothing was the most stable over the past hundred years.

@RegDwigнt Oh. I thought it was just stability that was n question.

Hence the duuude, dude.

you can keep adding little things to it, but that seemed to be the one that was necessary

Yes, like Cheddar.
On second thoughts, don't.

10:52 PM
cheddar is great as long as you don't have too high expectations

Well, stable democracies get rich. Gotta figure what’s the cart and what’s the horse.

jumping into a threshing machine is great as long as you don't have too high expectations

@Mitch Well yes, that's what happened to the American democracy once they added cheddar.
Now it's sold in cans.
Hence my proposal to not add cheddar.

@Xanne China has eradicated (for whatever they like to set the bar at) poverty in their country over the past ... well over the past few years.

10:54 PM
@Mitch Well, not all of China is Shanghai, technically speaking.

@RegDwigнt To be fair, the stuff that is in cans is only cheddar-like in sentiment.

Is me point mate.
First you add cheddar, then you lower your expectations.
That never happens if you add parmesan.

@Cerberus I read that as "Only Arabia and China are not (-democracies-)" given that what we care about is stable countries as the primary criterion.

That's why Berlusconi keeps getting re-elected every five years. Total stability because parmesan.

@Mitch Eradicated poverty?

10:57 PM
@RegDwigнt They've had a very good record in creating roads and bridges and high-rise apartmens and automating agriculture and all those things the European countries did to move people out of the countryside and in to urban white collar jobs (or more manufacturing or service)
@Xanne 'eradicated' may be too strong a word

@Mitch Yes, indeed.
@Mitch Hmm I think there is still a ton of poverty in China?

@RegDwigнt sends in startup idea to AngelList
@Cerberus Quite a bit less percentage wise than 20 years ago

@RegDwigнt I mean stable as in, existentially stable.

Much less sice Deng, who encoraged capitalism.

Established democracies have havoc and mayhem, but they are generally not overthrown.
@Mitch Yes, to be sure.

11:01 PM
@Mitch the fuck is AngelList.

@RegDwigнt In a stable, well functioning democracy, it's not such a big problem if Genghis Khan is elected into parliament or something.

I'm a boomer. I'm barely done with catching up on the IndieGoGo scams.
Actually not even IndieGoGo. What was it. It was the other one. Not Kickstarter, either.

In a stable democracy, no single person should be able to wield enough power to overthrow the state. There should be checks and balances.

Oh wait yes it was indiegogo. The All or Nothing thingie. I couldn't sit through all of the fifty minutes.

@Cerberus That’s what the constitution is for.

11:03 PM
@Xanne Well, a constitution can be part of that.

@Cerberus well yes, that's what I'm saying. One year you're an existentially stable democracy, six years later you're invading Poland.

@RegDwigнt No, I would not say Weimar Germany was an established democracy.

Ohh semantics now. I love semantics.

Semantics (from Ancient Greek: σημαντικός sēmantikós, "significant") is the study of meaning, reference, or truth. The term can be used to refer to subfields of several distinct disciplines, including linguistics, philosophy and computer science. == Linguistics == In linguistics, semantics is the subfield that studies meaning. Semantics can address meaning at the levels of words, phrases, sentences, or larger units of discourse. One of the crucial questions which unites different approaches to linguistic semantics is that of the relationship between form and meaning. === Theories in lin...

I liked it when Heracles cleaned up the Augean Establisheds.

11:05 PM
Why bring in academic fields?

I couldn't think of a word.

How about bismuth?

I don't mind if I do.

Good.

That's Otto van Bismuth to you, though, kind sir.

11:08 PM
So, the USA and the USSR saved the world from the Nazi’s (and Japan and Mussolini) so socialism is wonderful.
Actually the 20th’s main problem was totalitarianism.

@Xanne Thank you. I was taught as much in primary school, but these days kids refuse to believe smh.
@Xanne also the clothes. Shudder.

Clothes? What clothes?

Mostly the 90s, the 80s, the 70s, and the 40s. I'm kinda okay with the 20s and the 50s.

Oh, you mean the whole century. Yes 20s were the best.

Anyway. There's like 30% nazis in Eastern Germany again, so it's high time Putin started gathering some troops at the Western border or something.
I hope he reads this chat.
I don't have his whatsapp.

11:15 PM
Now, now.
Not Nazis.

Oh yes Nazis, my dear.

Well he’s got to get the breakaway republics back before he can do Western Europe.

That's why I'm hugging your border, just in case.
Well, the one with Luxembourg anyway.

There are Nazis in the AfD.

@Xanne nah, you don't get those back, you just march through them.

11:17 PM
But I think not even der Flügel are Nazis, not most of them?

Nobody needs Poland. Not even Poland.

There are more flavours of far right than Nazism.

Well for one, AfD failed to get rid of the nazis. For two, I'm not even talking about the AfD.
There's more flavours of nazism than AfD.
Certainly in Eastern Germany. Every which flavour in the world.

But not 30%.
At any rate, I'm glad there aren't that many Ossies.

@Cerberus not everywhere no. Certainly not Berlin. But Saxonia and Thuringia? Oh yeah.

11:24 PM
How would you define Nazism, then?
I would say it requires the glorification of violence and dictatorship.
The essence of fascism.

Disposing of democracy, free press, immigrants, the Euro. And yeah what you said.

Violence?
And what would they put in place of democracy? A strong leader?

That is a very good question.
For that they have not.

Then I think I would not call that Nazism.

But if anything that only makes it worse. They don't have an alternative. They just want to see burn what is there.

11:27 PM
Still, a worrying type of far right.
So I expect the Verfassungsschutzpeople will keep a tab on them and act when necessary.
Or what do you call them.

@Cerberus that's a weird point to make. Can't I hold nazi views in despite of nobody else holding them?

I don't understand.

@Cerberus yeah they do that for the worst offenders, and even started doing that recently for the AfD. It's still up in the air.
@Cerberus well you said that if I don't have a leader you wouldn't call my nazism nazism.

I think what those people are is different from Nazism. I think it does no good to conflate terms. What will you call real Nazis?
@RegDwigнt No?

That's a no-true-scotsman type of question. I cannot answer that. In fact that's the main line of defense of any Nazi: insisting that they are not.

11:32 PM
I think it's very simple: you pick a definition, then you call people x if they fit it, otherwise you call them something else.
Picking a definition forces you to think about it, and it allows others to understand better what you mean.

Well if you shout "Deutschland den Deutschen, Ausländer raus!" in my face, that's my personal definition, mkay.

In addition, you prevent discussions from devolving from the core issue to terminology. Because you know that is what OCD people like me will do.
@RegDwigнt 1. Why? 2. That's vague.

1. because you asked for my definition. What do you mean why. 2. that's not vague at all. I know a life-threatening situation when I'm in one.

Why pick that definition?
It's unclear to me.

That's fair enough, but look. I don't care about your OCD as much as I care for my very life.

11:37 PM
Priorities!

Inorite. I'm OCD myself like that.

We should join a help group.

Top priority: not getting killed by a German for not being German. Second: LEGO. Third: sorting all the LEGO by part and color because OCD. Distant fourth: checking with you what other OCDs there are on offer.

I think your chances of no. 1 are rather low.
And where is linguistic pedantry in your list?

@Cerberus Precisely! Because I've set the priorities right!

11:40 PM
Do you work for the Verfassungsschutzpeople?

Now imagine I'd be sorting my LEGO in a no-go area of the Sächsische Schweiz. Not so good!

Oh, I didn't know Switzerland had been annexed by Saxony after all.

See. It's started already.
I'm not calling on Putin for help for nothing.

The great saviour.

Any saviour is great if he saves you.
Anyone is a jerk if he doesn't.

11:44 PM
Indeed.

Hold on, someone's trolling me back right now.

God?

Earlier tonight someone on MuseScore posted, "I will make any score for you in ten minutes and send you a link to it on my Google Drive. You don't need to buy Pro. Just tell me the piece that you need and I'll send it to you."
So I replied "Bruckner, Mass in F minor, please. I've been begging everyone for ages, but no one seems to have the ten minutes. Thank you!"

Perhaps he has some wacky computer programme.

Now they're replying back "Sure thing, can you send me the link to the score".

11:48 PM
You can send a link to a Youtube video?

That's a good idea actually.
Nope, nothing on YouTube.
That's a bummer. I would've totally sent them the link.
You have the best ideas. Sadly, they are completely infeasible! Why oh why.

I saw that one. No score in there.
No score in any of the others, either.
Though maybe it's only funnier that way if I still send it to them?
I'll save it for my next reply.

Oh, I thought he was going to send you the score.

That was pretty much exactly what I replied just now.
Also going by the profile picture it's a she.
Like, as in, what seems a genuine picture of them.

11:56 PM
A they, then.

@RegDwigнt Why should there have to be a score in the video?
She didn't ask for a link with a score.
If she does, you can say you award the video with a score of 10/10.

@Cerberus I amended that bit just now because they did and you're right it makes no sense if I leave it out.

I'm glad the élite at Muse Score continue to entertain you.

@Cerberus that's a bit too on the nose. You should know by now that my trolling levels have far surpassed that.

No comment.

11:59 PM
Any sufficiently advanced argument is indistinguishable from trolling.
