Haha. "Herd mentality".
Good news for Mr. President, we've long developed that.

@Robusto You didn't really expect the Senate to move with all due celerity, now did you? The quote at the end is real, however, and from today when both your favorite Florida Senators announced they were to introduce said bill in time to delay our annual clock-fucking day by a year and a week. It's likely to pass. After all, what else do they have to concern their august selves with between now and then?

Does anyone else keep accidentally spelling alarm as alaram?

11:00 AM
@Færd - But contemporary linguists of the past were like, 'Sure, why not.' Or whatever; it's weird.

11:31 AM
@Mitch - I wonder what my FIL remembers; he was a teenager then. About all he's ever said is that they marched through Germany, giving the people what little they had on them; and that he would never forgive the Japanese (b/c of the POWs he knew, not b/c his brother was stationed at Pearl Harbor at the time. They survived by hiding under the trees; the bombers hit the buildings, barracks, etc.).

@MattE.Эллен no, but I quite often spell alarm as sub umbra alarum tuarum iehova.
A common typo.
Not to worry.

@Mitch - People have to be judged by the time they lived in. I was happy as hell that Bush Sr. knew how to use his Air Force...but my son, trained in urban warfare, would see that as an atrocity. Where I would see house-to-house combat as stupid...like W (and I'd assume he didn't GAF about his own army). One generation...people don't fight like their parents; they just don't.

11:49 AM
@RegDwigнt sets iehova to wake me up at 6 a.m. in the morning

12:29 PM
@MattE.Эллен isn't that a classic Irishism: fillum for film, uh... shoot...aren't there others like this?
but they're rhotic so...

@Mitch maybe I can sneak into Eire, if I only talk in text

@KannE It's also a matter of prevalence. Was there a systematic habit of doing terrible things or just one-off anecdotes.

@Mitch worm? many short words that end "[consonant]m"

12:38 PM
my typos are so poetic

@MattE.Эллен forvo doesn't have an example of someone irish saying that.

 Hear the loud alarum bells—
                 Brazen bells!
What tale of terror, now, their turbulency tells!
From Poe's "The Bells" ...

hi cockalorum

@MattE.Эллен but yeah I think that must be a pattern in Irish English...except there are very few words I can find that would establish a pattern beyond 'film'.
a pattern of one.

@Mitch maybe "born"?
I would guess it would work the same with n

> @Cerberus puppy guarding the gate of heck.

@Mitch Oh, you've found my daughter!

> Soviet leader Brezhnev is showing his elderly mother around the Kremlin. He's showing her the expensive paintings on the wall, the fine china, the authentic oak desk he uses and the Mercedes the gov provides for him. "Look mother, look at all we have achieved!" His mother replies "Yes, yes, Leonid that is all fine and well but what if the Communists come back?"
(a Soviet joke)

1:35 PM
@CowperKettle Nice.

2:22 PM
@Robusto He has many good songs
But this Bells rendition is outstanding.

@M.A.R. Iesus set his alarm to wake him up at 3 days later.
Though the Bible is not very clear on whether he really used this song.

2:48 PM
@RegDwigнt Clearly the worst song from the '80s, a decade that had more than its share of terrible songs.
@CowperKettle Yes. I remember him from a looong time ago.
A tragic case.
In fact, there's nothing from him that isn't from a long time ago. He killed himself in the mid-'70s.
A talented guy, but after the Democratic Convention in Chicago in '68 he devolved into paranoia and madness.

@Robusto Yes, I know. I first learned about him reading a book by Stephen King in the 1990s, and then I downloaded his songs in the early 00s

5:23 PM
@CowperKettle Here's one of his songs about the '68 Democratic Convention:
Lincoln Park and Grant Park are Chicago parks where most of the violence occurred.

@Mitch - I don't know; I think it's all bad. But it's a matter of record, so I don't know what you mean, really. There's all this "unknown" stuff on video. It's unknown in HS history class, maybe not anymore; I don't know where else.

8:15 PM
@KannE What I meant about prevalence was whether it was a single or small handful of instances out of many, a few bad actors, or was it a general occurrence that wasn't planned but pretty widespread practice, or was it general stipulated procedure. Or just a myth.
eg maybe some guy made up this story about Allied fighters strafing civilians, or maybe it actually happened once or twice, or maybe it just generally caught on as a thing to do after strafing an airfield and then flying over town get a few extra hits, or maybe there was an official command that told the pilots to do this particular strategy of scaring civilians out from cover of their houses into the street and then doing a second strafing run down the street.
That is a general scale of prevalence to understand any claim... is the claim made up (though plausible), are there some heinous but very few examples, is it general culture that happens commonly (again this needs to be quantified) but is not an official or even conscious behavior, or is it a very conscious (mandated or official) behavior.

@Mitch - Well, my MIL was one of the evacuated British children, so I watched quite a few documentaries on that, and one went into detail about the bombing, specifically bombing with the intent to kill civilians. There's a term for that; I can't remember anything. And terms they use for that. There were different ways...and things people did to prevent those (not just blacking out; it was more complicated). Anyway, I think they showed both sides of it. Sorry, my memory is bad.
