@Mitch - I wonder what my FIL remembers; he was a teenager then. About all he's ever said is that they marched through Germany, giving the people what little they had on them; and that he would never forgive the Japanese (b/c of the POWs he knew, not b/c his brother was stationed at Pearl Harbor at the time. They survived by hiding under the trees; the bombers hit the buildings, barracks, etc.).

@Mitch - People have to be judged by the time they lived in. I was happy as hell that Bush Sr. knew how to use his Air Force...but my son, trained in urban warfare, would see that as an atrocity. Where I would see house-to-house combat as stupid...like W (and I'd assume he didn't GAF about his own army). One generation...people don't fight like their parents; they just don't.

@Mitch - I don't know; I think it's all bad. But it's a matter of record, so I don't know what you mean, really. There's all this "unknown" stuff on video. It's unknown in HS history class, maybe not anymore; I don't know where else.

@KannE What I meant about prevalence was whether it was a single or small handful of instances out of many, a few bad actors, or was it a general occurrence that wasn't planned but pretty widespread practice, or was it general stipulated procedure. Or just a myth.

eg maybe some guy made up this story about Allied fighters strafing civilians, or maybe it actually happened once or twice, or maybe it just generally caught on as a thing to do after strafing an airfield and then flying over town get a few extra hits, or maybe there was an official command that told the pilots to do this particular strategy of scaring civilians out from cover of their houses into the street and then doing a second strafing run down the street.

That is a general scale of prevalence to understand any claim... is the claim made up (though plausible), are there some heinous but very few examples, is it general culture that happens commonly (again this needs to be quantified) but is not an official or even conscious behavior, or is it a very conscious (mandated or official) behavior.

@Mitch - Well, my MIL was one of the evacuated British children, so I watched quite a few documentaries on that, and one went into detail about the bombing, specifically bombing with the intent to kill civilians. There's a term for that; I can't remember anything. And terms they use for that. There were different ways...and things people did to prevent those (not just blacking out; it was more complicated). Anyway, I think they showed both sides of it. Sorry, my memory is bad.
