@tchrist Oh, how very pink!
Cute animal.
Too bad we don't have those here.

You bump into them now and then. I had one one night under my apple tree after they'd started to fall that year.

Possums drop from an apple tree? How very marsupial of them.

'Twas the season.

I am very happy that the Belarussians have risen against the tyrant.

@CowperKettle Lushenko’s opponent has had to flee the country.

@Xanne Of course she had, her husband is in jail, and she is not a professional revolutionary, she is only a housewife.
But the very fact that at least they are trying to resist is heartwarming.
In her place, I would go crazy from the stress. Lukashenko is a wily and cold blooded murderer. A couple of his opponents suddenly disappeared in the past.
"Disappearances of people in Belarus"
The Head of the Belarussian Central Election Committee disagreed with the results of the referendum that gave Lukashenko sweeping powers. He suddenly disappeared in 1999.
Shards of car glass and drops of blood were found in the street. He and his friend have not been seen since.
Lukashenko is a thug like Putin.
Putin's long-time critic, journalist Anna Politkovskaya was killed on Putin's birthday, by the way. A gift. A true mafia state.
> The assassination had happened on Vladimir Putin's birthday, and two days after Ramzan Kadyrov's 30th birthday celebrations
Anna Stepanovna Politkovskaya (Russian: А́нна Степа́новна Политко́вская, IPA: [ˈanːə sʲtʲɪˈpanəvnə pəlʲɪtˈkofskəjə]; Ukrainian: Га́нна Степа́нівна Політко́вська, IPA: [ˈɦɑnːɐ steˈpɑn⁽ʲ⁾iu̯nɐ pol⁽ʲ⁾itˈkɔu̯sʲkɐ]; born Mazepa [mɐˈzɛpɐ]; 30 August 1958 – 7 October 2006) was a Russian journalist, writer, and human rights activist who reported on political events in Russia, in particular, the Second Chechen War (1999–2005).It was her reporting from Chechnya that made Politkovskaya's national and international reputation. For seven years she refused to give up reporting on the war despite numerous acts...
And still the moron Macron calls his "friend Putin" and visits to shake hands.
The story of appeasing Hitler has taught them nothing.
> In 2004, Politkovskaya had a conversation with Ramzan Kadyrov, then Prime Minister of Chechnya. One of his assistants said to her, "Someone ought to have shot you back in Moscow, right on the street, like they do in your Moscow". Ramzan repeated after him: "You're an enemy. To be shot...."
Kadyrov is President of Chechnya, a state in the Caucasus that Russia keeps under occupation.
> Politkovskaya had planned to file a lengthy story on the torture practices believed to be used by the Chechen security detachments known as Kadyrovites. In her final interview, she described Kadyrov—now president of Chechnya—as the "Chechen Stalin of our days"
A couple of years ago a story emerged of mass torture and killings of LGBT men in Chechnya. Some managed to flee abroad.

@M.A.R. I'm not trying to convince you to bother with twitter or facebook...they're both horrible wasters of time.

6:58 PM
@CowperKettle I think it's important to realize that Macron is not an outlier and following the status quo.
@Mitch of course, but you always need two sides in a debate. We would either talk about it and reach a new understanding, or we wouldn't. Not a big deal.

@M.A.R. I really like Macron, I'm just being grumpy. Yes, in politics you sometimes have to communicate with despicable people.

More importantly, that the only people that can uphold moral values in politics are outsiders.
There are no good guys, so if he starts questioning Putin's treatment of the LGBTQ, it's politically beneficial to do so.
This should be obvious to most of us, but between all the masks and masquerade, it sometimes gets lost in the noise

7:43 PM
@M.A.R. OK That's just crazy. Debate is useless, since there's only one correct side to a dispute. If one 'side' can't realize on their own that they actually have no point, then they're just stupid. Same goes for respectful and constructive opposition, it's for idiots.
@M.A.R. I don't think everybody is so Machiavellian.

@Mitch ur face is respectful and constructive opposition
@Mitch Almost every politician is. FITE ME

8:02 PM
@M.A.R. Agreed.
I have a Facebook account, but I have never used it much.
Certainly not to post things or anything.
@Robusto Yes. We have a clear distinction between neuter on the one hand and feminine-masculine on the other.
They have different articles, different pronouns (relative, personal), and partly different adjective endings.
The distinction between masculine and feminine is much weaker, though.
It is observed by careful writers, and by southerners and Flamands.
But I need to look up the gender of many m/f words in a dictionary in order to use them properly.
It is only expressed in possessive and personal pronouns.
Perhaps also in adjectives by southerners.
Het huis (n) - de staat (m) - de opening (f) [articles]
Het huis, dat ik zie - de staat, die ik zie - de opening, die ik zie [relative pronouns]
Een groot huis - een grote staat - een grote opening [indefinite adjectives]
Het is groot - hij is groot - zij is groot [personal pronouns; but the distinction between m and f is often not observed]

> Has anyone noted this phonetic variation in /ə/?
Yes. You just did.
What a weird question to ask.
@M.A.R. ah I can see the error of your ways now.
You think that using Twitter means reading Twitter.
But that's not how Twitter works at all.
That's not how the Internet works.
On the Internet, you never read. You only write.
You never listen. You only talk.
You do not follow or like. You only check how many others follow and like you.
Hope that helps!
You don't go to a landfill to fill your pockets with garbage and your trunk with dead bodies.
You don't go to a septic tank to drink from it.

10:26 PM
@M.A.R. I think it's even more important to realize that Putin is not Hitler and France is in no danger of being invaded by Russia.
Macron realizes that. Some people on the Internet don't. Which is why he gets to be the President of France, and they don't.
@tchrist One time ole Brer Possum, he git so hungry, he did, dat he bleedzd fer ter have a mess er ’simmons.
