William McGonagall
William Topaz McGonagall (March 1825 – 29 September 1902) was an Irish weaver, poet and actor who lived in Scotland. He won notoriety as an extremely bad poet who exhibited no recognition of, or concern for, his peers' opinions of his work. He wrote about 200 poems, including "The Tay Bridge Disaster" and "The Famous Tay Whale", which are widely regarded as some of the worst in English literature. @Færd I think you will very much enjoy it. It's less bloody than the title suggests. But it's a deep, deep movie worth all your attention when you're watching it.

@Færd Perhaps that an almost bankrupt Soviet Union had to tend to its own problems closer to the end, and the soldiers mostly became like a failed abandoned plan? Taliban sounds like it's backed by extreme wealth and power at every turn, though. At least perhaps to the average Afghan. So it can be that the Soviets weren't much better, but it feels that way
Trying to find a way to rationalize the book's depiction of course. I haven't studied it enough to assume a firm stance on anything

@M.A.R. Maybe. I don't know much about the details either. The charts I put up yesterday suggest that the Soviets were, by and large, worse for Afghans than the Taliban.

@Mitch our media sometimes propagates the Iran-centric idea that the US is in Afghanistan for the opioid business, because a lot of illegal drugs are smuggled over there to Iran reportedly. The implications are that they're in it for the money, and to hurt Iran. I never checked the veracity of such claims, so I can't dismiss them, but they seem a bit far-fetched
For one, the cost of the US staying is never mentioned in this sort of conspiracy theory
They show that allegedly lots of agricultural farms have been converted to weed farms or such since yadda yadda I don't remember the details much.

On another note, compared to Palestine, Syria and Yemen, news coverage for Afghanistan or what's happening there is relatively low here. Nevertheless, if that's the best they can come up with to attack the US existence in Afghanistan, maybe there isn't much to begin with
Of course, every once in a while, this US drone drops a bomb and kills some Afghani civilians. They never admit the drones target Taliban's or any other group's leader
