@tchrist Rapier than what?
@RegDwigнt Yeah, show up while I'm having dinner. One of your Russian tricks.

Why no the before so-called?
O_O

Do we really call torn jeans distressed jeans in common parlance?

5:45 AM
@CowperKettle It’s the fabric that’s distressed, e.g., distressed denim. Today this is often done mechanically, or with machines. Thus you can find jeans that have exactly the same tears or marks of wear in the fabric as an other pair.
. . . focused on mono . . . Why would so-called require “the”?

@Robusto the peasants at work, the lieges at diner. One of your capitalist tricks.
Vote Castro.

Castro GTX: high performance communist revolution

@CowperKettle Well, most countries' graphs are like that

@RegDwigнt Looks like your workers' paradise has tricks of its own.
@RegDwigнt I'm sure the probability of your being drunk at any given time >= 1.

1:13 PM
@RegDwigнt Nope, I didn't!

1:41 PM
@Robusto well you always eat all the diners, so vodka is all I have to make do with.
@Cerberus all rehearsals with 10 people or more are virtual.
We are a 90-strong choir.
Plus orchestra.
You do the math.

@CowperKettle That's the young Franklin trying to imitate The Spectator. He actually plagiarized one or more of those columns. I wrote about that in an American Lit class as an undergrad, but damn me if I can recall which one(s) now.
@RegDwigнt I have never eaten a diner. Dinners, on the other hand, I have had aplenty.

@RegDwigнt Ahh OK, makes sense.
A pity, though.

Hm.
Hey guys, remind me please. What is today's minimum required number of attempts at beating someone over their head with the answer?
Two doesn't seem to be enough.
But I'm afraid the third one will be too violent a blow.

Q: "before increasing" or "before increased"

dotwhich sentence is correct : (I'm writing about a graph) • Flour consumption had a little drop in mid 30s before increasing again in 1940 • Flour consumption had a little drop in mid 30s before increased again in 1940 What if I want to change "again" to "along with ..." ? • Flour consumption had...

Enjoy the comments exchange.
@Cerberus well you don't say.
Like, the largest hall in the whole city barely fits an audience of 1200.
They did some basic maths on how much it would fit with the current Sicherheitsabstandsregeln in place.
It's 160.
One ticket would have to cost 300 Euro for us to even break even.

2:26 PM
Yeah, that really sucks.
@RegDwigнt Do it in a park?

it is not a long question

@M.A.R. what are the latest good movies there? I mean uh local movies?
Any Persian sci fi?

5:51 PM
@Mitch Zilch
@Mitch :/
Since around 2000, my impression is our cinema has been declining steadily.
There's probably not a single movie I can recommend after 2010.
More propaganda, less substance, definitely less substance, and right now these horseshit movies that pass for comedy but are really rather uncouth reactions to the uptight religious status quo
There were a few movies decades ago that passed for pre-SW sci-fi with very low budget but still with a good heart and often a good lead.

@M.A.R. Did you ever see this old film about a man who pretended to be a famous director? The second half of the film is actually footage from the court case.
I think it's from the seventies or eighties.

@Cerberus It's kinda familiar
It's certainly from that golden era right before the decline.

The man actually plays himself in the film.
OK.

There were directors that were real artists with real passion
Few of them are left, and none of the passion.

Did some go abroad?

5:56 PM
That movie sounds like something Makhmalbaf would make.

That actually sounds familiar.

@Cerberus Kiarostami did. Our great artists have often had a history of living their final years abroad, yes
Right now we only got Majidi, and he's not the Children of Heaven Majidi, methinks

Or I actually think the con man in the film pretended to be Makhmalbaf!

The recent movie about the prophet Muhammad, my brother watched it in a cinema, and said it's visually grand but empty otherwise.

And then Makhmalbaf directed the film in which the former con man played himself.

5:58 PM
Familiar
You have Farhadi of course, and Ramin Bahrani
Check out 99 homes and Chop Shop, if you haven't

It was Close-Up.
And apparently Kiarostami is involved as well.

I strongly recommend Kiarostami's work also, if you haven't watch some

Close-Up (Persian: کلوزآپ ، نمای نزدیک‎, Klūzāp, nemā-ye nazdīk) is a 1990 Iranian docufiction written, directed and edited by Abbas Kiarostami. The film tells the story of the real-life trial of a man who impersonated film-maker Mohsen Makhmalbaf, conning a family into believing they would star in his new film. It features the people involved, acting as themselves. A film about human identity, it helped to increase recognition of Kiarostami internationally. Many critics consider Close-Up a masterpiece of world cinema; in the 2012 Sight & Sound poll, it was voted by critics onto "The Top 50 Greatest...
So it was directed by K. after all.

Where's The Friend's Home? Amazing movie, one of my favorites.
@Cerberus Heh, you had these few artsy blokes, of course they got familiar with each other often

I rarely watch films, but I'll keep in mind I should be looking back at chat when I do!

6:04 PM
Yay!
When I'm looking for a made-up name or a movie to watch or something similar, my mind draws a blank until I come up with something stupid
Even though I often do ready lists and other stuff

A made-up name?
Ready lists?

Ready (v.)
@Cerberus I was creating this new character in a fantasy game and I could use a lot of GoT-inspired or similar names which I tie a knot beforehand to remind myself of, but I never do
There were a few shows in the eighties, 2000–2005, that IIRC based their plot on sci-fi things, like this show "Travelers" which was about aliens visiting Earth, unaccustomed to any of the unsaid social traditions and tricks, but it had little to no CGI, and I wouldn't call it sci-fi

@M.A.R. I was thinking of آینه Ayneh (or The Mirror in the US). But I see that that was 1997. I imagined it as only a couple years ago.

@M.A.R. That could be nice.

8:19 PM
@M.A.R. Welcome to the club. The superhero blockbuster genre has entirely taken over cinema, so that over the last 20 years you can count on one hand the number of really good films released in the US.
TV, however, has come to the fore with some excellent series.

@nohat Nice.
Nice day for a crest ride. At least in the beginning.
After 5000' (~1500 m) of vertical ascent I was too sore and tired to appreciate it much. But the view was great.
Damn, I'm still tired. And sore.

11:05 PM
@Robusto What club? If the superhero genre had taken over our cinema, at least it would have generated some revenue, turn some interests to funding better movies.
Right now our cinema's considered a cash sink AFAIK, or at best like the downer 1950s era of B movies
@Mitch oh no, might be that . . . Might it be that you're getting, you're getting OLD?!
Dun dun duuuuuun

11:34 PM
@Robusto Wow, you actually climbed that high?
Marvellous view.

11:59 PM
@Cerberus Yeah. Probably not my best idea ever, given the heat today, but it was at least cooler on the crest.
