Perhaps a definition of empirical is needed.

1 hour later…
1:13 AM
I think what @ⵃⴰⵎⵎⴰⴷⵣⵉⴷⴰⵏⵉ is calling Exact Sciences would be called “hard sciences” in American English.

3 hours later…
4:45 AM
@Færd I like to think of math as not a science but rather a tool of science. I also don't think of social science as science. While many universities grant a bachelor of science in math, many prefer the term bachelor of arts. I think math is more of an art.

1 hour later…
6:06 AM
so hungry
@Jasper what job do you get by bachelor of mathematics?

2 hours later…
8:34 AM
@Cerberus yes

4 hours later…
12:06 PM
@Cerberus They can try to be more empirical, with some success.
@Jasper Math is definitely not reducible to a tool, much some scientists would like to regard it as such.
Technically speaking, I suppose you could call it an art, but I don't feel comfortable with that either.
I'm going to content myself with "math" for now.

12:57 PM
*much as some scientists...
(among others)

1 hour later…
2:05 PM
Looks like Blizzard is going full Frank Frazetta with their latest art.
Compare:
Frank Frazetta (born Frank Frazzetta ; February 9, 1928 – May 10, 2010) was an American fantasy and science fiction artist, noted for comic books, paperback book covers, paintings, posters, LP record album covers and other media. He is often referred to as the "Godfather" of Fantasy Art, and one of the most renowned illustrators of the 20th century. He was also the subject of a 2003 documentary "Painting with Fire". Frazetta was inducted into the comic book industry's Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1999. == Early life == Born Frank Frazzetta...

2:54 PM
@CaptainBohemian I don't know. I think you can get lots of jobs that just require a general degree.
@Robusto It is weird that he removed a z from his name.

3:06 PM
@Jasper Probably got tired of people misspelling it.
@CaptainBohemian Learn to program.

@Jasper what do you get? But most jobs which can be gotten by a general degree don't satisfy a mathematician, I think, because those jobs can't satisfy a mathematician's sense of achievement.
If a person who really loves math, she should hope to work on a field where she can exercise her specialties in math.

@CaptainBohemian What excites you about math? Specifically, what do you like to do the most in that discipline?

A person who studies for a degree just for the purpose for getting a job wouldn't choose such a profound subject such as math to major. They can choose a vocational subject to make getting a job easier.
@Robusto geometry.

What is it about geometry that is so appealing? (I mean this in a positive way.)

3:44 PM
@CaptainBohemian It is very hard to become a professional mathematician. One must go to graduate school, finish your PhD, get a position as a post-doc, get a professorship, get tenure, etc. Many steps along the way, each one uncertain.

@Robusto It gives fascinating formulations for some theories in physics, like general relativity, quantun field theory.

@CaptainBohemian Maybe look into physics?

@Jasper actually I thought about entering graduate school when I was in undergraduate school and did that right after finishing undergraduate studies; I had never thought about what jobs to look for when being in undergraduate school because I just like to keep studying.

@CaptainBohemian If you really just like to keep studying, then academia is where you belong.

@Robusto I think so.

3:59 PM
Such jobs do exist. And while @Jasper may choose to underscore the perils and pitfalls thereof, it's worth noting that you don't have to be a Fields Medal candidate to have a very stimulating career.
Teaching, for example, is a great way to share your enthusiasm for a subject, even while you're still pursuing your own studies in it.
The very best teachers/professors I ever had were ones whose enthusiasm for their subject carried into their teaching.

@Robusto actually teaching is part of the curriculum in our graduate and PhD program.
@Robusto I indeed major in physics.

2 hours later…
6:24 PM
Not to be too prejudicial, but are people just dumb?

@Mitch No. They're also ignorant, mean-spirited, callous, unsympathetic, and immune to reason.

6:44 PM
I'm salivating right now like Pavlov's dog.

@Mitch What happened

7:19 PM
@Robusto They missed the side story "Wild Dogs Eviscerate Stephen Miller; Dogs Recovering"
@M.A.R. Nothing in the real world. Just a general remark on life, but also some of the ELU answers.
It's like people who actually know things don't even bother. (here or elsewhere)

@Mitch Stop trying to make me feel depressed. I'm happy today.

@Robusto LOL
I actually prefer Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders to Joe Biden, but anyone is better than the current president.

@Jasper Word.

8:00 PM
@Mitch I sometimes console myself that we don't live in smart enough conditions (environmental, social, etc structures) for our level of intelligence. Not smart enough for everything to work out pleasantly.
So, ultimately, it's not our fault.
But that's the kind of philosophical "cool" that I often lose in my day-to-day life.

> Hey everyone, I wrote this new nocturne
Hm. I never knew I could write new nocturnes.
I only keep writing nocturnes that already exist.
@Robusto lol, secretary of commerce Bezos.
That picture reminds me of an old English saying, what was it again. Ah yes, don't stick your dick in crazy.
Then again you all long went and collectively did, so who am I to teach the world things.

Don't ruin his happy day man.

1 hour later…
9:09 PM
@RegDwigнt Jeff Bezos = Joe Biden = Justin Bieber = James Bond = Jason Bourne = JB. QED.

9:20 PM
@Jasper Dude, you just summoned the apocalypse.
@Robusto Oh shit. How about this then:
> What’s the difference between Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

The people in Dubai don’t like the Flintstones, but the people in Abu Dhabi do.
I laugh until I cry with that one.
Because haha flintstones
@Færd but then, on a different tangent, sometimes when people say 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing', I think I'd prefer for people to have that little head start.
Dunning notwithstanding Mr. Kruger.
@RegDwigнt Yeah, that's probably not the best idea.

@Mitch You made me facepalm.
@RegDwigнt What, no link?
@RegDwigнt Yes. Sadly, that ship has sailed.

@Robusto Where is Sanders?

@Cerberus Fighting the power.

9:51 PM
Hi everyone.

@Taylor Hello
@Mitch I don't get it

Gosh I forgot how alarming that sound is. It's been a while.

BUMP

I hope everyone here is doing well. :)

You can see @Mitch hasn't lost his touch with funny things that are funny because they're not
Oh, sorry, I thought you were an old-timer, but you don't seem to be
Unless you are, which would make this whole thing awkward
I have a thing for that

9:55 PM
Well, yes and no. I guess it depends what you consider old.
I'm not Thursagen, at least.

Hah.
I don't remember seeing Th. in ages?

That's how it goes with old people

Hi Cerberus, are you well?
Thursagen's profile says he was last seen 2016. I'm not sure about chat though.

Chat is always the same people unless someone has a question about this paragraph they're writing

10:02 PM
@Robusto Haha OK

@Cerberus That's what a years-long banishment will do for you.
It has a chastening effect.

10:36 PM
I suppose it has.
@Taylor Quite well, and you?
@M.A.R. But you're not always here, nor am I.

@Cerberus In spirit
And I really am, because this tab is always open on three devices

The holy spirit?
How multimedial of you.

@Cerberus I don't have the certificate to be able to judge that
@Cerberus just trying my best to be one of the kids these days

How is it working for you?

I come off as more solemn than hip
And I'm nowhere near as whiny enough. I think.

10:54 PM
Heh.
By the way, how is your health these days?

11:13 PM
I am curious how the AMD Ryzen 7 4800U will perform in a laptop.
It has 8 cores and 16 threads and uses very little power. It is supposed to beat the Intel Core i7-1065G7.
I hope more laptops will use these new AMD chips later this year.

11:43 PM
So do we all!
