Does anyone have access to this article? I'd like to read it

12 hours later…
1:56 PM
@CowperKettle I only see the first few paragraphs, then would be required to subscribe.
I can tell you this about running, though: It certainly does damage your joints.

@Robusto I don't smoke joints

I have an artificial knee now because of that. I had two knee surgeries before that, and after the second one the doctor said, "your running days are over." I said, "But can I still play basketball?"
He said, "Only if you can get your buddies to let you camp out under the basket." In a word: no.
@CowperKettle But you can damage them anyway.

@Robusto So you think your knees were damages by running: did they ever hurt during or after running?

Yes, and yes.

OK.
I run, too.

1:59 PM
Even when I was in my twenties I was getting knee injuries.

Hmm.

That's why I cycle now.

That sucks.
I run, but I never notice any discomfort in my knees, neither during nor after.

Yeah. The problem is running on pavement and other hard surfaces, like an indoor basketball court.

I run on pavement.

2:00 PM
@Cerberus Usually not during, but definitely after.

OK.
My knees never hurt.
So could I be OK, then?

I'm not an orthopedist, but if you don't run too aggressively you might be all right.

Right.

How far do you run, usually?

Only short distances, 25–35 minutes.
Because I hate it and I don't get any noticeable production of endorphin.

2:02 PM
My "normal" was 5 miles (~8 km) in 35 minutes before breakfast. Then I'd play basketball later on in the day if I could.

(I imagine endorphin can mask pain.)

Of course endorphins can mask pain. Why do you think people are so hooked on exercise? ^_^

I'm sure my route is shorter.
I know!
I have experienced endorphin a few times in my life, but I cannot remember the last time. Would be nice to have.

Well, you get it from vigorous exercise. I don't know how vigorous your exercise is, but I suspect not very. Do you ever get into a second wind?
@Cerberus: The above painting by van Gogh was stolen from your country recently.
The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen (Dutch: De pastorie in Nuenen), alternatively named The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring (Dutch: De pastorie in Nuenen in het voorjaar) or Spring Garden (Dutch: Lentetuin: F185, JH484), is an early oil painting by 19th-century Dutch post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh, created in May 1884 while he was living with his parents in Nuenen. Van Gogh made several drawings and oil paintings of the surrounding gardens and the garden façade of the parsonage. The painting was in the collection of the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands from 1962 to 2020. On 30 March...

@Robusto Yeah, I know.
But the large majority of stolen Van Goghs are found eventually.
So we'll see.
@Robusto It depends on what counts as vigorous, but I still don't get it when I run very fast.

2:23 PM
@Robusto Sometimes my hip joints hurt, never the knees

2 hours later…
4:31 PM
For knees I would recommend a placebo operation. I read some research about that some years ago. It works. (But perhaps not if I tell you.)

3 hours later…
7:10 PM
@Robusto I'm very sorry!
I'm afraid of having pain in my joints, because I love running. Today I did a 11-km run.
And since the start of the year I have run 640 km.

8:00 PM
You could be in Latvia!
(I think you lived in Moscow?)

1 hour later…
9:11 PM
@CowperKettle No problem. The knee replacement gave me my life back, so I'm very grateful to have it.
Although it was a real bitch to get through.
