3:24 AM
“It is requested you” isn’t understadable, which is probably why you have no answers.

1 hour later…
4:26 AM
I'm trying to come up with an example of syntactic syllepsis using a bulleted list.
It's easy to come up with examples in Polish, so I'll give one of those as an example of what I mean.
Ten ser
* jest smaczny i
* jem.
"Ten ser jest smaczny i ten ser jem", meaning "This cheese is delicious and I eat this cheese."
It constitutes syntactic syllepsis because "ten ser" is the subject of the first part but the object of the second part.
You can't really do that specific thing in English, though, because you can't generally put the object at the beginning like you can in Polish.

9 hours later…
1:54 PM
Where is everybody? You realize social distancing doesn't apply in virtual chat rooms, don't you?

@Robusto Back off man. That's too close.

I was going to say that!

ha ha ha ha

Sweet baby Hades.

something something geniuses something think something alike
WTF to Hades talk though. That... incendiary
Oh shit... is it ...
Pun Thursdays?

1:58 PM
It's more incendiary down here—less so up where you dwell.

@Robusto Look man... I'm reading three Stephenson novels simultaneously, writing a Stephenson novel which is basically three dissertations in one, disinfecting my house like kashering a yeast farm, making a fully functional Lego ISS (with test planet and vacuum).
-and- you want me to text?
Oh and @RegDwigнt needs help with his effing opera.
Hey @RegDwigнt, here, use a C# there. Trust me. It'll give the color you need.
@Cerberus Oh Devil. So literal.
OK here's another one.
How well do pickles like a good day?
They relish it.

Last night YouTube suggested to me a wonderful new video by Vengerov.
@Robusto Thought you might be interested as well.
Right now he has to stay at home just like the rest of us.
So he filmed a chamber concert in his living room and put it online.
Tchaikovsky, Mozart, and Schubert.
@Mitch My opera is doing fine, I'm singing as loud as I can, can't you hear it?
Or is it the problem that you can?
Then stick two gurkins in your ears.

I guess you're just not gonna use the C#. I can tell.
Your loss.
I do feel bad about it, but mostly for you.

2:22 PM
WTF does It's a "tock" year mean?
I presume it has something to do with "tick-tock" ... but what?
I read the whole fucking article and it doesn't even bother to explain. I'm so out of the loop ...
@RegDwigнt I guess this is the true meaning of "chamber" concert.
@Mitch What is this kashering?
@RegDwigнt Did you mean "gherkins"?

Tick–tock was a production model adopted in 2007 by chip manufacturer Intel. Under this model, every microarchitecture change (tock) was followed by a die shrink of the process technology (tick). Its replacement was announced in 2016, called "Process, Architecture, Optimization", and is similar to a tick–tock cycle, followed by an optimization phase. == History == Every "tick" represented a shrinking of the process technology of the previous microarchitecture (sometimes introducing new instructions, as with Broadwell, released in late 2014) and every "tock" designated a new microarchitecture. These...
so, new micro-architecture

@MattE.Эллен Thank you. I am so out of the loop.

ars should really have spelled it out
I had no idea

They really should've.
It's not like everyone's as dumb as me, but still ...
I only clicked on that article because it made me wonder what a "tock" year was.

2:33 PM
@Robusto before Passover you're suppose to clean things super well, especially the kitchen. one of the things to really make sure you get rid of is any kind of thing that will lead to flour accidentally leavening. like stray yeast?

@Mitch Dafuq? Do the super-religious start cleaning places that can get yeast infections?

@Robusto um... probably?
There are rules about that stuff too I'm sure.

Also, does kashering have to do with kashrut law then?
@Mitch Ouch for women then.

yeah, they're cognate words
kosher, kasher, kashrut

I'd never heard the verb form.

2:35 PM
@Robusto I've heard that one of the jewish prayers ends with '... and thank god I'm not a woman'.

I've heard that too. I wonder if women still have to sit apart in temple.

I' mean, like most religions, there is holy scripture, and then there are all the cultural practices built up around it.
@Robusto We are in the 21st century so that's totally crazy.

Yeah. I think Judaism may hold the record for cultural practices built up around it. Hmm, maybe Islam would give them a run for their money.

Except for those sects who still do it.
@Robusto People of the book.

Includes Christians, of course.

2:38 PM
maybe it's an abrahamic thing, having the holy book.
but literacy is also a pretty modern thing.

Could be.

I'm sure there's a base set of 'rules' in hinduism, and then it gets interpreted wildly in subcultures.
And then the British come along and make it worse.

Prolly. It's all these rules that make people stupid and crazy, though.

Without rules it'd be anarchy.
There'd be linen mixed with wool

Didn't Swift satirize that in Gulliver's Travels?

2:40 PM
@Mitch Thank you.
@Mitch gasp

@Mitch And you could no longer eat ants because they're traif.

Next think people will eat shellfish!

@Cerberus I know. It'd be awful. Your socks would never stay up.
@Robusto uh...

Yes, and Hades would could come and take you.

@Cerberus and rabbits

2:42 PM
Oh, perish the thought.
Or even hare.

Yuck

In nice, creamy pepper sauce.

@Mitch Or rabbis.

Or stewed.
Hmm.

@Cerberus Oh. Now that you put it that way.

2:42 PM
I did, didn't I?
@Robusto Oh, I thought those were the same?

Do they sell creamy pepper sauce? Like in a bottle? That would be nice.

@Cerberus Experienced folks can tell the difference.

So lately every other day, there's a new awful pun written in chalk on the sidewalk.

@Cerberus Happy fucking Easter.

2:45 PM
Sometimes, it feels like this.

It's making me think that all those dad jokes are really written by moms, and then the dads are the ones who have no shame and say them out loud.

@Mitch And then the moms blame them. It's a perfect system.

Something should be done about it.
Like wait an extra five minutes before you take the trash out.

Heh, I almost typed mombs. What a serendipitous mistake. Watch out, falling mombs!
@Mitch That is not covered in scripture.

@Robusto Consult your local rabbi.

2:47 PM
Or rabbit.

not kosher, dude.

I follow cashrut law. Money talks, bullshit walks.
@RegDwigнt: Nice that the pianist is playing a Bechstein. They blend so well with strings, yet they have such a charming upper register that really stands out without drowning out, if you know what I mean.

I follow cashew law. basically you just eat nuts.

NOU. You're nuts.

That's racist

2:51 PM
@RegDwigнt: I also love Vengerov's expression. He just looks like he's enjoying the shit out of every single note.

I follow katchoo law. Mostly it's just saying 'Bless you'

You follow kazoo law.

Anyone can follow that.

No. You have to be chosen.
You don't choose the kazoo. The kazoo chooses you.

2:59 PM
Jet engine in what key?

3:13 PM
@Robusto All of them?

3:46 PM
@Mitch A real composer would know the right keys to use for jet engine.
If you can't find the keys, how you gonna fly it?

@Robusto Inorite. I would enjoy every note, too, if I were able to play them the way he does.
And yes, I have practiced today. And will go practice some more in a minute.
@Robusto Inorite №2. And at their level, that probably wasn't even an accident.
There's a million pianos in Moscow, and I'm sure he has access to all of them.
To think that I could have crossed paths with him had I picked up the violin just a decade earlier or so.
He used to be a honorary professor right here in this town. Of all places. In the middle of something that would have to work really hard to qualify as nowhere.
My violin teacher has crossed paths with him many times.
@Mitch lucky for you, I have access to all three, so you've come to the right place.
I own a kazoo, castanets are a no-brainer to get ahold of, the neighbors probably have like a dozen between them. And my dad can bring a spare jet engine from work should I need one.

4:02 PM
Nice.
I expect greatness.
No pressure.
Maybe a little pressure.

@Robusto fun fact: the German word for "key" is the same as for "wrench". So if I were to work on a jet engine here, I'd certainly have all the keys on me.

It can be a small jet engine.
I'm not picky

We only have big engine in Russia.

Oh. Great then.

Engine very big. And loud.

4:03 PM
The louder the better.

Our thinking exactly.

Castanets can really overpower a piece.

Yeah maybe I'll throw them into the engine at the end of the piece.
Would be a lovely coda.

OH. So modern music then.

Nono, all baroque.
I'm not Phil Glass.

4:04 PM
Kind Pete Townshend.

I only do counterpoint.

@RegDwigнt That dude just wants to play one note. Forever.

Right, speaking of which, I'm off to play all the instruments in the house. BBL.

So.
You're back.

@Mitch that's John Cage, tho. Also not forever but a mere 700 years.

4:05 PM
@RegDwigнt That's forever to me.
I mean, 10 minutes is a long time.
Have you seen the news?

1 hour later…
5:30 PM
@Robusto Tick, tock, tick, tock, BOOM.

6:13 PM
@Cerberus don't be ridiculous. Mombs don't go BOOM. Mombs go MOOM.

6:44 PM
@RegDwigнt What, Schlüssel? That I didn't know. But it makes sense. We use key in English in that way for some similar purposes (though not wrenches).

2 hours later…
8:29 PM
@Robusto Sorry, I was too busy staring at my reflection on the countertop.
@Mitch Yeah.
Do you wash your hands with soap?
Cool. If you decide to tell me about it I think I’m just gonna block you.

9:17 PM
@Gigili Tsk tsk. Remember what happened to Narcissus.
@tchrist: ^
That's today. And it's probably apt to go cheaper.

@Robusto Good thing your bike isn't Diesel.

Heh, yeah.
A Clif bar is more expensive than a gallon of gas.

There's a place near Junction where they're cheaper by the ton.
Clifton.

Haha.

9:39 PM
@Robusto yeah, Schlüssel. It has so many meanings, the Wiktionary article has more pictures than any Wiktionary article.
== Schlüssel (Deutsch) == === Substantiv, m === Worttrennung: Schlüs·sel, Plural: Schlüs·selAussprache: IPA: [ˈʃlʏsl̩] Hörbeispiele: Schlüssel (Info) Reime: -ʏsl̩Bedeutungen: [1] Gegenstand zum Schließen und Öffnen eines Schlosses [1a] in der Heraldik Darstellungselement im Wappenschild, symbolisiert Aufgeschlossenheit [1b] Symbol des Apostels Simon Petrus [2] Musik: kurz für Notenschlüssel [3] Informatik: Information, um eine Nachricht zu verschlüsseln oder zu entschlüsseln [4] Technik: Werkzeug zum Anziehen oder Lösen von Schrauben [5] Datenbanken: kurz für Datenbankschlüssel – eindeu...
@Robusto wait, cheaper? I read earlier today that it was on the rise again because Trump tweeted something stupid (of course he did).
> I am designing a video game, and i need characters for it from anyone who is good at graphic designing. This would be volunteer work, and i would need the characters in different positions. Attach a link to the picture in the comments section, if you would like to try. I want the character to look realistic, but still have a anime look on it.

@RegDwigнt Wait, I think I remember Schraubenschlüssel, because screwdriver was Shcraubenzieher, right?

9:58 PM
@RegDwigнt MOOOOMMM

10:17 PM
Let's see: comb, bomb, and tomb. Should all be pronounced the same, right? Nope. And let's not leave out aplomb. Ah, English.

Should, aren't.
Climb, limb, bimbo.

11:19 PM
Surrogates is a 2009 American science fiction action film based on the 2005–2006 comic book series The Surrogates.
