See, I'm still not asleep because I had to get some work done on a score first.
@Robusto Being serious for a minute, here's my work-in-progress folder right now for your eyes only:
One of these is a concerto, like.
Another, a quartet.
Yet another might one day turn into a symphony.
Also, one day my ass might sprout wings and fly me into space.
But yeah. That's just the scores I'm actually working on.
As in, literally at least once a week I fire up every single one of them and don't close it again until I've made progress. Even if it's just writing one bar. Even if it's just throwing one bar away.
Really that's my one rule that I have. Every day, play at least one measure, and every day, write at least one measure down.
Note how there's a whole sub-folder "Sketches". That's all the things I'm not working on. Actual sketches. The stuff you're seeing here is all past that stage.
In fact a few are actually finished pieces, as you can tell from the names. It's just that it's only now I'm actually writing them down for the first time.
And then there's stuff I just do on the side real quick. Like the Blueberries from earlier. They never even made it into this folder. They might now, so a week down the line I still remember to iron out the counterpoint or give it polish.

Also, @Cerberus hates when people use sentence adverbs separated by commas to begin sentences. Also, I dunno where he gets that, but I think we should all bombard him from now on with sentence adverbs separated by commas to begin sentences.

@RegDwigнt Let's just say the difference is that Cormac McCarthy convinced me he'd left nothing out; you didn't. I was having fun enjoying the music earlier and then it came to a rather sudden end. I felt then, and I feel now, that you could have done with a bit more development.
Bear in mind that I wouldn't say that if it weren't true. I'm not going to accept glib excuses about "leaving on a high note" and the like. Take your talent seriously and explore it.
You really have no idea how few people in my life I have said that to.
End of lecture. We are now closed for rebuttals. Get to work.

@Robusto Ugh. I don't know exactly what you mean by sentence adverb, but, yes, also should not be used at the beginning of the sentence like that, let alone with commas.

Might as well, as at its core it's true.
You write music in which your fans love, but then you also write fanfiction in which your fans love. And then you get a side job in which your fans love.
It's difficult. I need 30 hours to a day. And if I had the 30, I'd probably need 50.
You say you don't get to say "don't waste your talent" too often.
But I can supply the flip side to that coin.
I get to hear "don't waste your talent" all the time.
But everyone means a different thing by that.
I've had people say I would be wasting my talent by not becoming a pianist, a guitarist, a mathematician, a typographer, a racing cyclist, a LEGO designer, a professional World of Tanks player, a chemist, a translator.
And a million other things. You get the point.
Life's too short. Every minute I spend on my bike, I'm not spending at my piano. And vice versa.
@Robusto yeah that bugged me a great deal last night after turning off the PC. I should have started with a "thank you".
@Robusto I might agree. I could go on forever. I could give you ten minutes of music no problem. And I wouldn't mind doing that. I wouldn't mind listening to it myself.
But Mandelstam just doesn't give me the luxury.
It's the whole point really. And I am actually enjoying that in a way. All these tidbits. Gone in sixty seconds.
I'm already stretching the genre quite a bit. This is no Schubert. This is Russian romance. It's supposed to be verse-chorus ad nauseam till you run out of text. All over a bunch of simple chords any farm boy with a guitar can play.
I'm already stretching that in every respect. I try to have it both ways. Pack as much Schubert as can into what little time I'm given.

@RegDwigнt I think you could squeeze more out of the Mandelstam. Listen to these songs based on fragments of poems by Kenneth Patchen:
Actually there is only one song there.
But you get my meaning, I think. When you're writing music based on words, the music still has to come first.
@Cerberus Actually, a sentence adverb is an adverb that governs an entire sentence.

@Robusto yeah that's very good. I will need to do something very similar for his poems that are even shorter, of which he has quite a handful, including possibly the most famous one, which is only two lines. A single sentence that does not even have a predicate, just the subject.
Roughly, "The careful and muted sound of a falling fruit amid the incessant song of the deep silence of the forest".
That might be served quite well by slowly building up a shapeless pianissimo soundscape into which the lyrics imperceptibly tiptoe, and from which they then just as subtly vanish.
But that's rocket surgery. I'm nowhere near that yet.
Like, I only just finished my first minute of SATB yesterday. Only took me forty years.
