@Mitch nods

Hah!
I think GPA is an exam score or something?

@Cerberus Grade point average.
@RegDwigнt: Did you ever see the HBO miniseries Chernobyl? Very depressing, but I'm not asking you to watch it all. There is an unaccompanied dirge at around 49:00+ in the 4th episode, which sounds like Russian to me but might be Ukranian, and I wonder if you've seen it or heard it and can translate it for me.

Ah!

> In some countries, all grades from all current classes are averaged to create a grade point average (GPA) for the marking period. The GPA is calculated by taking the number of grade points a student earned in a given period of time of middle school through high school.[2] GPAs are also calculated for undergraduate and graduate students in most universities.
The USA is one of those countries.

@Robusto Oh, gosh.
What pressure that must put on children.
Here, only marks from the final year count, and a few special ones from the one before.
And that is stressful enough for them!

@Cerberus Yeah. It never bothered me because I got top grades in all but a couple of instances.
But those couple of instances rather pissed me off.
I got a B in each of two semesters of music theory because the teacher only awarded an A to his piano students (orchestral students weren't real musicians, after all) and I got an A- in a grad school math course for similarly stupid reasons.

@Robusto Same here.
Except the Dutch literature exam.

Heh.

I hated all the books.
Well, most.
So I announced to my teacher that I wasn't going to read them for the oral.

Ha, good for you.
I did actually flunk one course (technically) when I withdrew within the time period but the paperwork never went through. It took me a whole semester to get that expunged through the turgid bureaucracy.
If I was interested in a course, it was easy to get an A. If I wasn't, I dropped it if I could. If I couldn't, I just turned it into a game. Because getting good grades is always a game.

3:19 AM
Oh, is this about music college?

Conservatory, yes.

Ah, we call it conservatory, too.
I never did that at university...

I actually went to the conservatory first. Then I picked up my English degree afterwards through a year of intensive study.

Good for you.

BTW, learning to play the game is key to education. So many people don't realize that.
Also to getting lots of fake internet points on sites like this one. ^_^

Q: What is the equivalent for this Persian expression "The cat can't reach the meat, says it smells bad"

DALThe expression, which implies the meat is placed on a counter too high for the cat to reach, is used when someone who can't achieve a position which is notoriously high or expensive, would pretend they don't like it. "Gorbeh dastesh be goosht nemireseh migeh boo mideh" Example: I don't like Ferra...

Gawd, I'm glad this one was closed.
What, are we the clearinghouse for Persian expressions now?

@RegDwigнt I subscribed to that channel some months ago. It is excellent.

@Mitch Okay then
I was trying to descibe words in which a prefix is more common than the unprefixed word
For example you would see 'disjointed' a lot more than you would see 'jointed' (i.e. put together)

I think food is the power for doing everything. as long as there is persistent food offer, any giant work can be completed.
yesterday I heard a broadcast in some mart asking people to donate money to solve children's hunger again. Actually hunger is not only children's problem but a lot of adults' problem.
food is a persistent demand but making food is very boring (I guess that's why food price is roaring constantly) and going to fetch food frequently is a hassle.
so I think hunger is a problem to many people, not just children.

Q: Does the word "agree" have more than one meaning?

TimothySuppose the word agree just has the meaning of agreeing with an opinion and to say you agree with that opinion means you have that opinion. Furthermore, suppose that every time somebody says they agree to something, they truthfully mean they have that opinion. Finally, suppose people don't feel f...

Q: How would you translate "il n'y pas d'amour, il n'y a que des preuves d'amour" to English?

Théophile PaceI'd like to translate that quote from Pierre Reverdy (or Jean Cocteau, this is an open question apparently). The quote is: "il n'y pas d'amour, il n'y a que des preuves d'amour" For some context see: https://dicocitations.lemonde.fr/citations/citation-10483.php . I'm not necessarily searchi...

How about if you want us to translate a phrase from a language nobody speaks, maybe you at least get the phrase right in that language?
"Il n'y pas" cannot be translated into any language because it is not a thing that exists in any language.
@Robusto well, you'd be like the second-to-last person on Earth who wasn't subscribed to it already.
That's how excellent it is.
They also have Computerphile. And Numberphile2. And quite a few of their regulars have channels of their own which are also quite fantastic.

I mean, who asked for that?
May 2 '17 at 2:07, by Robusto
@Cerberus Yes, well, this reminds me of Dr. Johnson's remark about a dog dancing on its hind legs: "It's not done well, but you're surprised it can be done at all."

@Robusto So you're a watcher of Fox News now.
@Robusto Probably apt.
