Q: Why don't pedophiles love children in the same way that Francophiles love French?

David MThanks to Richard Krafft-Ebbing's Psychopathia Sexualis pedophilia only refers to the always pathological sexual attraction to children. Yet, we don't automatically assign the notion of sexual attraction to the -philia/-phile suffix in most other words. It means loves/likes/attracted to. No...

I can't decide if this question is stupid. I sort of know the answer, but I think it's a great discussion question. And, if nothing else, I worked hard to make it entertaining.

@DavidM It's (somewhat) similar to phonology: there are things that you just can't distinguish and other don't understand why you can't, and there are things that are totally different to you that others can't distinguish.
@DavidM The first two of the each triple?

@Mitch Yes

@Mitch Most probably true.

And the plates with the threes below are identical to me.
@Mitch Never thought of it that way. Actually brilliant.

@DavidM That should have been easy for me to know. I've been not reading with full sense lately, making lots of misreadings here on ELU. Not sure why.
@DavidM But I don't know how to make that thing known. How do -you- know that those first two are different for me?
maybe we're all punking you?

12:19 AM
@Mitch These are the questions that keep me up at night.
@Robusto Hates my title for the question I posted.
Anyone have a suggestion to improve it?

@DavidM I thought it was funny, but it is certainly in the direction of possibly offending.
to the french? to children?
somebody will take offense.
Robusto's was funny too

@Mitch His was hilarious

I still don't get it though
did you do research on all -phile words?

I did a bit. They go back to the 18th and 19th century at least. Before the book that coined pedophile

necrophile is the only other one that is ... about sex
coprophilia?

12:30 AM
@Mitch That's kind of the point of my question. We truncated the word erotica from both descriptions.

just change the title - 'Was Kraft ebbing the first one to use the -phile ending for sexytime?'

@Mitch Yes. That's actually a good angle!

it seems the list of -philia words are more erotic than the -phile words
@DavidM The title is the most egregious

@Mitch I changed it. What do you think?

Q: Was Krafft-Ebbing the first to add the sexual attraction angle to the suffix -phile?

David MThanks to Richard Krafft-Ebbing's Psychopathia Sexualis pedophilia only refers to the always pathological sexual attraction to children. Yet, we don't automatically assign the notion of sexual attraction to the -philia/-phile suffix in most other words. It means loves/likes/attracted to. No...

1:08 AM
@DavidM change 'sexually molesting' to something tame.
@DavidM but presumes an understanding of phonology. I'm stumped for the moment for an example from everyday life. maybe something like pain can only be perceived by the individual not anyone else?

1:33 AM
@Mitch ok. Sanitized for your protection.

1:52 AM
@DavidM sure.

2:07 AM
@DavidM You deleted it?
In Ancient Greek, philo usually meant loving someone Platonically, wheras ero meant loving after an erotic fashion.

@Cerberus Yes. Clearly too many people are going to be offended by this.

Bleh, people.

I waited for someone to downvote it. Then deleted. Maybe it's vanity.

Autophilia?

Maybe I should reopen it and see what people say. Robusto is usually pretty straightforward and he used the word skeevy to describe the question. I didn't care for that.
Not a knock on him.
Just didn't want to have something out there that made people like him uncomfortable.

1 hour later…
3:23 AM
@DavidM That is indeed what he is.
@Mitch Homophile.
Though those words are none of them about sex, exactly, but rather about romantic or sexual attraction.

So... I don't ingest caffeine very often. I almost never drink tea and I'll have cola once a week or so (I hate the taste of coffee). But today I had insomnia, so I decided to take some paracetamol with caffeine to get me through the day (because my nasal passage is itching like hell, which the paracetamol takes care of) and let me tell you this is the worst feeling. It feels like being uncontrollably excited about nothing and horribly depressed all at the same time. Thanks I hate it.
Luckily for capitalism I'm aware enough to do my job.

Sounds...awful.

sings everything is awful, everything is bad when you're high on caffeine

:-/
Caffeine buzzes me out also.
I avoid it at all costs.

I don't avoid it so much as I'm too impatient for hot drinks and water is fine. But I'm thinking this sensitivity to it... is it a plus? I mean I'm not going to be able sleep until midday tomorrow, so that's a super power? Luckily that was the last of the caffeine infused paracetamol, so I can't do this again accidentally :D

I hope the rugby semifinal isn't as close as the cricket final was @MattE.Эллен
If it is, fatigue will be a factor in the final.

10:02 AM
@skullpatrol oh man. we're playing NZ. that will be a toughie

10:24 AM
Yup, barring fatigue and injuries; I believe that will be the championship game. @MattE.Эллен

10:37 AM
The one thing that bothers me about rugby is why does the team that scores get the ball back?

10:54 AM
@skullpatrol only for the conversion, then the side who didn't score has the ball for the kick off

But the side that didn't score has to kick it off and lose possession, right? @MattE.Эллен

Yeah but they kick it up the other end, so they have an advantage @skullpatrol
Kick high and long, then get your team nearer their try line
Hmm. There's a skullpatrol and a skullpetrol here. Confusing.

Without possession, field position doesn't mean as much.

It does, because you can only pass backwards

riiight, now it makes more sense

11:04 AM
What sport are you more familiar with?

Still, even in soccer possession changes after a goal

You can kick it forwards, but that has drawbacks because anyone in front of you when you kicked it is offside, and it's a weird shape so it doesn't always go where you meant it to.
Also there's a minimum distance to kick from a kick off

I like having numbers on the field to tell me where the team is :P
(re: NFL)

11:30 AM
hello gys
when we say find sum of even digits in a large number what does it mean? say number is 84645164
then sum of even digits is 8+4+6+6+4
or sum of even digits = 8+6+5+6
or sum of even digits = 4+4+1+4

5 mins ago, by Fawad
then sum of even digits is 8+4+6+6+4
you missed:
"4"
the sum of the digits that are even
Your other two answers are even place value positions in the given large number.
> find sum of even digits in a large number
Says nothing about place value position.
@Fawad

12:05 PM
> compute the sum of all prime digits of a
given number
what does this suppose to mean then
@skullpatrol
should i check only for 2,3,5,7 in number?

Yes. Replace "even" digits with "prime" digits, as above.

ok pal, thanks!

np, thanks for asking

Now what does THIS mean? "Prime computation of even some of the even sum digits of a primarily even number"

12:16 PM
No fair, you cheated
I saw you peeking at someone else's paper
D. Adams

1 hour later…
1:47 PM
@Cerberus I don't doubt that that is a word, but it is not in my reference list (/usr/share/dict/words)

1:59 PM
Wondering if someone can point me in the right direction. I have an image of four characters that I think are Korean, but could be Japanese. I tried scanning it with the Google translate camera app, but no luck. Where do you suggest I look for help on SE?

Thanks barlop

no prob

@T.Ioca Korean and Japanese look quite different. I should be able to tell you if you haven't already asked

Let me upload it then

2:14 PM
Korean
Maybe.

I thought so, thanks

'cause it looks simpler

Or could be a European graffiti tagger using a tag that looks like Korean. I'll ask now in that forum.

@Mitch sign -- Mitch
I mean, it's such a you thing to say.

@Mitch Wow, that is the best advice this room has ever seen!

11. If you're making a list, always end on a round number.

Hah!
12. Don't use lists.

:D

13. Don't write in imperative!

2:21 PM
14. NEVER USE CAPITALS OR LOTS OF EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!
15. Always complete your

16. Their are certain pronouns your shouldn't confuse.

ᅙcould be your top right character (so Korean), but I can't see any of the others in Hangul or Katakana, except that the bottom row could be mirror versions of フ and ヌ, which are katakana (so fake Japanese), but then the ᅙ is not a katakana, or hiragana, and I don't think it's a Kanji either. the first symbol is a mystery to me

Yeah, it could very well be a tagger called "Kocc" who just likes to make his tag look like Asian script.
Is Katakana used in Korean as well as Japanese?
Oh I misread, no it's not.

@T.Ioca lol. classy

> New research at Oregon State University suggests that the blue wavelengths produced by light-emitting diodes damage cells in the brain as well as retinas. (source)
I shouldn't have given away my 19" CRT monitor

2:31 PM

Ohhhhh...clever

You can probably get a filter to block blue light
@CowperKettle my optician offered a blue light filter on glasses

which, if wikipedia is any kind of reflectino of reality at all, an actual Englishism in Japanese, abbreviated 'Unique Clothing' with a misspelling, then translated phonetically to Japanese 'yunikuro'.

I wonder if they had a control group of flies that were kept out of any light at all. Maybe it was just the deprivation of sunlight?

wait wait wait... brain damage in flies?

2:38 PM
well the study apparently used fruit flies

@Mitch Horrible.

and they are extrapolating to humans

@T.Ioca That's a very long extrapole.

@Mitch - are you saying that first image on the right is actually stylised Japanese script?
Fruit flies are "an important model organism because of the cellular and developmental mechanisms it shares with other animals and humans.". Apparently.

@Cerberus For ages I just couldn't figure it out. 'Unique Low'? 'Uni Cloh'? And it's just another department store.
Now that I know what the clever idea is, I can happily walk right past it to the food court and have Korean Fried Chicken because it's fried chicken that's Korean so it must be good for you!

2:43 PM
@barlop Yes, and there are various programmes that will reduce blue length on your computer and phone.
@Mitch A logical conclusion.

@T.Ioca That would be a reasonable inference to make but, sadly, no, I am not that transparent. I'm only suggesting that the graffiti is a vague attempt at looking vaguely vague like the Uniqlo square Asian script graphic.

@T.Ioca Reading that article, I am somewhat sceptical.

@Cerberus and a happy one.

Good.

Except you shouldn't have too much fried chicken.
Every so often it's a wonderful treat.

2:45 PM
Oh.
Is that like chicken nuggets?

of course, if you like living dangerously, you can try kwickly fried chicken

@T.Ioca I guess you're not gonna shine blue lights into kids faces (or not, for a control), dissect their brains, and see how much damage there is.

Or is it not deep fried, but fried in a frying-pan?

Too much work

not enough sleep

2:46 PM
On the other hand
@Cerberus Look man I don't just walk into the kitchen asking to see how much oil they fry the things in, I just eat it. Bonus if they have a menu of choices.

Okay.

@Mitch That actually sounds like teaching :)

@Cerberus No. Chicken nuggets are (usually) formed balls of excess chicken parts (meat fragments, joints, toenails). They are fried in a batter, but that's it's only connection with fried chicken (OK also that chicken is involved)

So early verdict on my "Korean" is that it's Latin script, probably English, spelling a synonym for 'rooster'. :D

@MattE.Эллен Oh? That sounds really good.

2:49 PM
@Mitch OK then I have no idea what fried chicken would be. Except if it is like chicken milanese.

@Mitch was it fried long enough to kill any bacteria? find out later!

@T.Ioca I get emails about how to make roosters grow faster and plumper all the time.

Plumper!
How culinary.

K + O +C + C. Rearrange to find the farmyard animal :(

@Cerberus What colorless desolate hell without fried chicken have you been living in?
Oh. The Netherlands.

2:53 PM
/me wonders why you get emails like......oh.

they only have cheese fried tulips

@MattE.Эллен I'd try that.
Maybe once
Maybe a bite

Me too!

or a nibble on the edge.
of just the batter

they sound great

2:54 PM
available at all good windmills
any more stereotypes... when you try them you'll be like "Dam!"

Clog your arteries though

@M.A.R. I would totally say the title, and I read some of them like 'What are they trying to say? Is that good or bad?'. And then realize 'oh ... that explains a lot of my difficulty in high school English.
Also the part of programming I like - you compile and it tells you the composition errors.
@MattE.Эллен +1
@T.Ioca Cheez, you guys.

3:23 PM
Known troll returns.
This is the guy @tchrist first showed me all of his troll tracking info about 4 years ago.

3:44 PM
@Mitch Yes. Just the Underworld.
@Mitch It is now rare in English, I believe, but less so in other language.
Which is relevant, as this is an international discours.

@Mitch Umm.
That looks like a chain of snack bars I have never heard of.

@Cerberus I only sort of trust the unix word list. I don't know who manages it. and what kind of curating they do.
@Cerberus You've heard of them now, so you should try it and report back your experience. I can't tell how difficult it is to get to easily. It doesn't look walking distance.
But it's close to suppertime so...

I'd rather not.
I hope you sup well.

@Mitch [unrelated] best way to access sites blocked by college wifi in ubuntu? its the only thing stopping me to completely switch to ubuntu!

3:58 PM

@Mitch Very...interesting.
What about it?
I have to go, too.

Fried chicken and waffles. I've never had those together. It sounds like it is a thing people do -somewhere in the US traditionally, but only ever heard of it in the past couple years.

Only tourists eat waffles here.
For some reason.
Nutella and waffles are everywhere.

Is it a nederlandisch thing?

Luckily, there is now a city-wide ban on new shops that cater to tourists.
No, it is only a tourist thing.
Those waffle/Nutella shops did not exist ten years ago.

4:01 PM
@Cerberus I mean, nutella and waffles are good things in general, right?

Or perhaps fifteen.
@Mitch Not especially.
In my 2-minute walk to the supermarket, I pass by four of those shops.
Visited exclusively by tourists.
Those waffles will be all mealy and sugary.

> Some guy just assaulted me with milk, cream and butter.

How dairy!

Nutella is just a supermarket spread, not particularly interesting.
@Mitch Hah!

@Cerberus Bad waffles are bad.

Anything for tourists is bad.
They buy bad things.

4:03 PM
It's a bad precedent to buy bad things when you're not a tourist.

We have this famous flower market here. A newspaper recently tested the bulbs tourists buy there. It turned out only 1% actually grow into flowers. And none of the flowers looked anything like the packaging.
@Mitch Nobody buys those things except tourists.
But have to go.
Bai!

@Cerberus I've been to the big flower market depot thing, where there are dutch auctions and thousands of trolleys of flowers

@Cerberus "American Style Brunch With Caribbean Influences and a Hip-Hop Soul" (from Water en Brood). It sounds like a marketing concept from Martians.

It was very impressive

4:45 PM
I'm tired of people downvoting obviously correct answers. I get the impression it's because they don't like the question. Or maybe they're just trolls.
>10 upvotes, but some troll thinks they need to downvote it without a corresponding comment.

@DavidM the beauty of upvotes is it doesn't matter if somebody does that, because >10 other people disagreed. So their opinion that they didn't give, doesn't count. I personally think a downvote should require a comment.. but the system very adamantly promotes the opposite.

I'm just being whiney.

A: Is "swap" an accepted alternate spelling for "swab" in Australian English?

David MIt doesn't seem so. This is a malapropism by your client. See below: From Macquarie’s dictionary of Australian English - paywall, so no link. swap /swɒp/ (say swop) verb (swapped, swapping) –verb (t) 1. to exchange, barter, or trade, as one thing for another. –verb (i) 2. to make an excha...

Meanwhile I love the reference for swap: Swap the witch for the bitch.
Only in Australia would that be in a dictionary as an example for any word other than bitch.

4 hours later…
9:03 PM
@marcellothearcane Okay, that is the real flower auction, in Aalsmeer?
That's not where tourists normally go!
It's nice that you went to visit that place.
I'm talking about the street market where tourists by their flower bulbs, in the inner city of Amsterdam.
@Mitch You've said it!

9:23 PM
@Cerberus Speaking of tourists, did you ever look at that YouTube video about the Acropolis as portrayed in Assassin's Creed Odyssey?

@Robusto I...remember you mentioned it, and I remember watching a video from Odyssey, but I'm not sure whether it was that one.

@Cascabel meet me here.

whoops...what is this?
"...am I on...hello..am I on?"
@DavidM Ok...I am here.

@Cascabel I'm getting a this is a 14 year old non-English speaking kid who is trying to learn how to say bad stuff to his friends on COD or some other online game site. Maybe I'm wrong.

I have gone through 3 of this poor child's questions, most of which seem to indicate an abusive and isolated upbringing.
...maybe I am wrong.

10:38 PM
Hi!
That sounds like a complicated user.
@Robusto It looks great! Probably accurate enough.

10:58 PM
Hi @Cerberus... I flagged one of this kid's questions as "requiring moderator intervention.

Hmm I'm sure one of the remaining moderators will deal with it eventually!

11:50 PM
@Cascabel it's very difficult to say. I'm also getting the vibe of someone who got screwed in a contract. He keeps making reference to legal/money.
@Cascabel my heart goes out to him, but not much we can offer.
