5:41 AM
On the recent election in Israel, and the turning tide about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict:

6:00 AM
Just listened to the whole address and interview. Magnificent.

2 hours later…
8:27 AM
@CaptainBohemian that's what bookmarks are for. they can even tell you the last time you visited a page

1 hour later…
9:43 AM
@MattE.Эллен bookmark can't be commented. I want a feature where I can comment about the website I read, including questions and at best people who see my comment can reply me.

I think I don't really need the feature of adding web friends if those friends can't really talk with me about my concerns. I don't need a ton of friends who can just post their pictures to show me or pass irrelevant message to me.
I don't exactly know what reddit is for; I have never used it and don't know what functions it has.

you post links to things and people comment on them (or ignore them). I think it has got a bit more complicated than that over the years, but that's how it started, as a link aggregator

9:59 AM
Facebook also has a function I like pretty much---you can like the websites you are interested in then you get feeds every day from the articles from those websites. Also, you can join some groups where people may post websites interesting you.
those groups can also be asked questions, but I find scientific questions don't usually get good answers there. Maybe asking in SE or forums is better.

then I guesss Facebook is the place for you

but I just don't like the function of adding friends in Facebook. I seem to have never got a functional friend there.

so don't use it
you don't have to add friends

10:20 AM
but I have had 42 friends there now though none of them really has kept substantial meaningful interactions with me.

Then it seems your options are clear!
1.
keep using FB the way you're using it
2.
unfriend everyone you've friended and keep using FB the way you're using it
3.
build a custom website that does exactly what you want
once you've decided on a course of action, follow it

I can't build websites. Though the computer course of my undergraduate 1st year seems to have taught us how to build personal webpage, I have long forgot it.

10:44 AM
Good! so you've narrowed down your options to (1) or (2)

1 hour later…
12:08 PM
I am beginning to like the fonts Cambria, Constantia, Calibri, Candara, Corbel, and Consolas.

If only there were a Coheed font :D

12:47 PM
I do need friends, but Facebook is not a place for making friends.
Facebook should not use the term "add friend"; using "connect" or "follow" is more appropriate.

12:59 PM
perhaps linkedin will do what you want then. it's basically FB but no one is friends

2 hours later…
3:09 PM
Do you register your name on a register or in a register?
I know that's an absurd sentence. I just want to know which preposition goes with register.
If you consider it a list, then it's prolly on.
If something like a book, then in.

3:57 PM
@Færd What are you using 'register' for?
a list of names? (that is called a 'register')?
which gives 'in' as most popular and doesn't have 'on'.
Which is funny because my first impression was "It is obviously 'on' and ludicrous to use 'in' (because you're on a list).
But maybe you're also in a list.

1 hour later…
5:00 PM
I have an adverse events table for a lot of clinical trial patients. The head of the table has a column named "actions taken" or "measures taken" - the column contains measures/actions taken to address the event: decrease/increase medication, exclude the guy from the trial etc.
I wonder which word is really better here: action or measure.
The Russian title of the column is предпринятые меры, measures taken.
@CaptainBohemian I also post links to audiobooks on Facebook. Quite convenient. And I don't care if they use my data and sell it, I'm not a superstar.

@CowperKettle 'action' is better. 'measures taken' sounds like some last century bureaucratic euphemism.

@Mitch Thank you!

5:27 PM
Indeed. In ICH Topic E 3: Structure and Content of Clinical Study Reports, it is "Action taken"

Personally, I think Facebook is the single worst tool on the entire planet to do anything for quite some time now
Too big to fail though, I guess. Or maybe it's just a minority opinion
I mean, it did betray users on the primary things it promises to do for them
You're done pal. Now NSA knows you pretend to have healthy salads for lunch.

6:22 PM
Which abbreviation is more common for diastolic blood/arterial pressure - DBP or DAP?

Someone's back!

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ So what? I'm not a big fry to worry about my personal preferences being stolen

You don't have to be one to care about your privacy.

Even if someone breaks into my PornHub account, no big deal. It's not bad to have interest in porn.

If they're left free to project your future and make money out of it and even shape the future of societies, little will be left of democracy.
@Mitch I share that expectation, and I reckon many of the in hits are for cash registers.

6:29 PM
@Færd That was my expectation of my expectation (that seeing the graph it would have bee due to a more common reference to physical cash registers where the physical insideness of the object would come into play), but looking at the examples it found, it still seems to be about lists. So now I don't know what to think.

Hmm. At least I have a native speaker to not know what to think about this with.
That's good enough. I'm having such a peaceful night tonight.

@Færd Do you think powerful institutions have only social networks to gather such info? I think they can and will gather big data on society anyway
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Did you ever use it, or do you rely on news reports? I'm using it to chat with friends, to make appointments, to participate in political rallies (they are announced and promoted on Facebook, and then we meet on the streets)
And Russian opposition uses it to spread info about Putin regime's corruption.

@CowperKettle Not unless the public lets them do that. Our private lives is like the virgin wood for big data-gatherers. We don't know how important it is yet to preserve that for the sake of collective freedom and democracy.
Technology that respects the privacy of the individual and the public is possible.

I think that we've entered the AI era, in which our ability to predict what happens next gets weaker

Laws can be put in place about the reach of technology and even AI.

6:37 PM
no..

Too quick to capitulate.

People thought in 1935 - what beautiful technology we have! Fast trains, telegraph! And then 13 000 workers of the Trans-Siberian railroad were invited into USSR by telegraph, traveled on beautiful fast railroads to great fanfare, and then arrested and given 13 000 bullets to their heads.
Invited over from China.

The only thing lacking is the public mandate. And that's of course intentional. People must be kept in dark about what they lose for this situation to go on.
@CowperKettle I suggest that you take a look at Shoshana Zuboff's new book. Or, if not, read this article as a summary: 'The goal is to automate us': welcome to the age of surveillance capitalism

I was just amazed at a recent opinion poll result that says that 46% of Russian respect Joseph Stalin.

There are Iranians who hold fucking Hitler in high regard.

6:43 PM
All the knowledge of his atrocities that we have at our fingertips is nothing, because people only live day to day, and don't care about history or about even current events.

Or the previous Shahs.

@Færd Really? Because he was in favor of "Aryans"?

Or the current authoritarians, for that matter.
@CowperKettle Right.
@CowperKettle That's intentional, for a huge part, and can be remedied.
The part that is due to people being stupid, maybe not.
But I'm not sure how big either part is.

My friends spend all their free time discussing where to go camping next. They don't care about history. Even such recent history as 1990s. When I started telling details about WWII as we visited a museum on a bicycle ride, they stared at me as if I were some super-brain.
A rode a bicycle with a woman friend, she is 30 years old, and she did not know when the Second World War started.

I feel you. But I'm hopeful that that can change.
We humans are too slow to wake up to what matters in our life. Building up collective awareness is even harder. But when it is there, it motivates people.

6:48 PM
She thought that Russia had free and fair elections, until this spring. When Putin signed a law prohibiting critique of authorities, she said "Now I will not vote for him", and some guys laughed at this statement.

I have a Russian friend whom your friend reminds me of.

I only know two people among maybe a hundred friends who really think that Russia still has elections.
The second is a 43 year old guy, and he is.. ahem. He loves Stalin and Lenin and USSR and stuff.

I understand this, but I don't follow your argument.
Your original claim was along the lines of 'that people are to be supervised and shepherded forever'.

My argument is, AI-assisted corporations will easily manipulate societies.

Then your reasoning is faulty. It doesn't prove your claim.

6:51 PM
I think that people should fight against manipulation, but I'm not optimistic.

Building up awareness and motivating people in spite of that strong current is not impossible.
I'm not either. I just don't feel like caving in.
There are bright spots in history that give me hope.

@Færd It's something.

It's indeed a thing.

It probably means that my (and your) intuition is for one thing and the blind search without context is another, which means (maybe) that the context in out heads is different, we just can't articulate it.
or it could be in free variation.
meaning there's no rule, it's just sort of random.
There was an ELU question earlier about 'total' and which preposition followed, asking which version was right.
They were a all right.

Heh. I'm going to stick with on for registers that are lists, for the sake of consistency.

6:59 PM
One always comes to these questions thinking there must be exactly one right answer.
and sometimes there's not

Very often there is not.

but it's not like 'anything goes'

Sure.

I'm talking like this to avoid the real question
which is
which is not 'what does it really mean to be a true friend on FB?'
(that's easy, it means 'upvote everything)
or 'what is the meaning of life?'

Jan 30 '13 at 16:21, by Robusto
I just don't want to have "friends" like that. A friend is someone who will help you move. A real friend is someone who will help you move a body. A Facebook friend is someone who will find out where you moved the body and report you.

7:02 PM
(slightly more difficult; there's no meaning to that sentence)
@Robusto people think words mean things
and often they do

Jan 30 '13 at 16:20, by Robusto
Every time I log onto FB I find more people to unfriend.
But that's all over now. I deleted Facebook a few years ago. Before it was trendy to do so.

Every time I log into (onto? in to? ...?) I just don't get it.
I'm just not interested.
@Robusto you're a hiFBster
@Robusto I don't know why people are still using it. There's no press that says 'FB is great, use it to cure warts'
Wait...
I'm pretty sure someone said that
so nevermind

People use it for puppy pictures and the like. So if you are looking for people to manipulate, you're found your audience with FB.

@Robusto Puppies are the opiate of the masses.

I can't argue with that.
Puppies ought to be illegal.

7:07 PM
If you mix it with rum and coke
the latest party drink
rum and coke and puppies
ew...thbpthth...I got a hair
anyway, the real question is: Is it 'in a register' or 'on a register'.
'Put your name on this register'
vs
'Put your name in this register'
You know what I love about programming? When things work.
You know what I hate about it?

When things don't work. And it's your fault.

it has to be my fault. But I don't know what I did.
I did things as slowly and incrementally as possible.

@Færd Agreed. Thanks for the article link, I'll read it
Good night

one change here, one line there, if it doesn't work, remove that one line, check to make sure it works.

@CowperKettle :) Good night!

7:13 PM
but EXPLETIVE EXPLETIVE EXPLETIVING EXPLETIVE. It didn't work when I went back one step.

@Mitch So you added a line and it broke things irrevocably forever even when you revert to taking that line out? Sounds like gremlins.

Why is religious blasphemy still not tolerated but scatalogical is?
It's like people get upset more at 'goddamit' than at 'fuck'

@Mitch Here's where I tell you that religious blasphemy is eschatological.

goddam them all.
@Robusto hhaa

Do you realize how much of my life has been spent waiting for an opportunity to use that pun?

7:16 PM
@Robusto you're welcome

I feel ... freer now. I think I'll go for a walk in the woods or something. The long ordeal is over.

I'm sure that's pretty belabored freshman year of seminary school
@Robusto You have the rest of your life in front of you.
One chapter is done. the next begins.
unless it's one of those pst modern things where a chapter is followed by a stanza and then by a newspaper advertisement.

Speaking of a walk in the woods, if you haven't read this book you really ought to.

This was the closest I could find.
it wsn't about far-right parties in Europe, just independence movements
and the swastika with a missing leg is just some weirdo historical legacy
@Robusto I think I've read that. and is stil on the book shelf somewhere.
I did not see the movie.
if there was a movie

Don't see the movie. It sucked.

7:25 PM
I'm doing good so far then.
I'll see another movie.
not Shazam.
It might be a good movie, but there are just too many superhero movies out there.

Aug 2 '18 at 15:26, by Robusto
I won't see it. I don't see comic-book movies anymore unless Gal Gadot is in them.

haha..nice.
she's also in fast and the furious.
most of them
and Date Night

Really? I guess I have to start watching those now too.

@CowperKettle It wouldn't matter for most people (including me) either, but what the buyer does with that info can be potentially harmful to yourself, or your pocket.

Fun fact: the first fast and the furious was written, with full awareness, that it was trying to be 'Point Break' but with cars instead of surfing.

7:30 PM
Fun fact: Keanu Reeves is actually made of wood.
Hand-made, but still ...

@Robusto and we knew it all along in our hearts
when it was right there in front of our faces
I can't recommend the F and the F.

@Mitch the F is the F and the F good for anymore anyway
I wanted Fate of the F to actually be the Fate of the F than a vocal pun on 8, but it ended like Papa pig or whatever show kids watch over there

Hey! Adults watch Pepa Pig too!

Like, the two a-holes they were trying to kill for the past two movies are suddenly the world's best baby sitters?
"We're skilled spies. Let's go save a two-year old kid instead of thwarting some foreign terrorist plan."

But I find myself watching them for the parcourt scenes and when the tank is speeding down the highway followed by race cars and vin diesel gets on top of one car and attaches a chain to the tank and another car and the other car somehow gets exploded over the railing of the nile high bridge and that drags the tank sound to shoot at his car at the last moment and he is thrown through the air to catch Michelle Rodriguez (his former girlfriend who he thought had been killed but she has amnesia an
@Robusto Ohh baby baby Salt and Peppa Pig
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ People can change.

7:36 PM
@Mitch Do you mean parkour?
That's par for the kourse, I guess.

@Robusto No I mean parcourt. Like it's fancy and french and shit

I think you mean parboiled.

I think you've been having too many parsnips

@Mitch Yep. They couldn't kill Turret-o so they have to go save his kid instead.

There's a pun there with rutabaga, but I'm sure Garrison Keillor was already ousted from NPR for that.

7:38 PM

Or maybe I expected too much from a fan-pleasing franchise anyway. I mean, I was hoping for something like Logan, you know

Can you guess why this man is smiling?
Or smirking, perhaps.

I would have if I could see the image

@Robusto Gas?
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ It's banned in all right thinking countries

@Mitch Rhymes with it, I think.

7:38 PM
and yours

@Robusto Grass?

So if you said "gas" you didn't pass the test.

Are the kids finally off his lawn?

I dunno.

7:40 PM
@Robusto I saw that headline. Seems kinda whiny.
Just thank the nice billionaires.

@Robusto Anything Trump is one of the first to tweet about ends up like that
@Mitch So many philanthropists
And building . . . thropists

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Smirking at his well-dressed wife?

@Mitch No, the fire
Something like "enter the brigade of pretentiousness"

This
is
just
an

to

something
about
chat.
Yup!
I was right.
See if you can guess what I was testing.

Now, as your next assignment, try to make a nice little fellow in fixed font
It took me 13 edits.
To get it wrong

7:43 PM
I'll give you a hint. Compare that chat message with the one including the picture above.

The spacing?

Nope.

Padding.
Margin.
Indentation.

Nope.
Nope.
Nope.

Well, that's my remaining supply of typography jargon. Oh, and kerning.
This TeX library owner liked to spell it as 'fount'. So, 'fount'.
@Mitch your turn to guess

7:46 PM
Give up? It's testing what triggers SE's use of larger gravatar and rep score.
I noticed that my message with the picture didn't get that treatment, and I wondered why.

How big is the image? It doesn't when it shows me "image not found"

Formerly I thought that it must be based on size of message box, but now I think it must be about line breaks. Or something equally arcane.

IIRC it was the length of three messages, and a fourth consecutive message would show the accumulated rep

@Robusto hm...i always thought it was size/number of lines, but you're right. that's weird

You can test line breaks before insertion, I guess, not box size.
Even my nope nope nope messasge gets the start treatment.

7:50 PM
scrolls way back to find a single picture

These things were probably coded in 2011, so yeah, arcane. And ancient.

Yep, three lines gets you big avatar, fourth gets you your rep count
That fifth one . . . OMG WHAT DID YOU JUST DO

I broke the internet
You're welcome

I'm glad we have such a crack team working on these pressing issues.
Entering a Business Website in 2018
The days of entering a business website and being allowed to browse uninterrupted are over. Today, this kind of journey is all too familiar:

Yes okay, you can use my location

7:56 PM
@Robusto The other day someone was arguing that websites are actually dying

and also fullscreen computers. in favor of everything on the phone.

And the cookies reminders are now way more intrusive thanks to GDPR.

I heard someone's solution to that is to just assume by default that a website is GDPR compliant, and only have popups to say that your website does not do cookies.

Everyone's solution to that is that
No one's doing it though
TBH GDPR sounded like something Rouhani and his clique would do here, so it was kinda unlike EU? Or maybe it's the other way around

I thought GDPR was a euro-trash thing.

8:00 PM
Seeing how mister greenbeard likes to copy everything he can from the west

"mister greenbeard"?

Rouhani

I need more.
You mean Hassan Rouhani?

@Robusto I don't know wtf you're talking about, your image does get that treatment.

google.com/… Hmm, it looks greyish in the images, but I swear it's green
@Robusto Yep, POTIRI, heh
Or POTIROI, for consistency's sake

8:03 PM
@RegDwigнt I guess you had to be there.

I didn't have to. And so I was not.
I am a man of priorities, man.
I shall note however, that my post above while showing my avatar en gros does not show my reps.

@Robusto GDPR is the German entry at Eurovision

So I guess their code defies logic.
We may be witnessing a bug, not an intentional behavior.

I get the small icon not the large for that

My bad. I was attributing intelligent decision-making to what appears to be merely crappy software.
Didn't I learn when they trashed EL&U's design in the name of Big Brother?
"The design of this website will be a boot stamping into a human face forever."—George Orwell

8:08 PM
Timelines don't match though
@Robusto No it was Twain. It's always Twain.

At least here.

@Cerberus Looks like you really hate that smug, smirking bastard.
But, yeah, another county heard from.
Or country.
County is funnier.

I am tempted to find a working VPN just to check out the image

8:09 PM
@Robusto I have no idea who that is, but those people looked vile.

@RegDwigнt I knew you were going to do that.

I knew I was going to do that, too. We should be friends or something.

@Cerberus François-Henri Pinault et sa femme

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Facebook used to hold that title but lost it to Trump.

There is no doubt that he is a tool.

8:16 PM
@RegDwigнt Maybe I'm too much of a teen but Trump's reality TV is getting shittier. 2/10
Wait, 20 isn't a teen anymore.

20 is a teen twice over.

20 is the new 13.

Nooooo

@Robusto true, and if we wait another 20 years, then 40 will be the new 13.

I should be posting 16 emojis in 4 different types but laptop keyboards are so 2010

8:17 PM
@Robusto Ah, that figures.
Nouveau riche.
I thought fille, but no.

French words look like cosmetic brand names to me

Persian words look like shoe brands to me.

Fromage . . . Yeah, I could try fromage lip balm

ORLY looks like an airport to me.

Oh, really.

8:19 PM
Inorite is some mineral found deep in volcanoes

Like Volvic.

But Norit isn't.

Norit is a German company specializing in heated floors.

Remember, you're only young once but you can be immature forever.

Well. Not quite forever, technically.

8:22 PM
As much of forever as you'll ever see.

So what the fuck does "YouTube" even mean? Is "tube" a noun or a verb there?

Tube means subway
See, makes much more sense now

@RegDwigнt "The Tube" in America means the television, which means video.

@Robusto I must say your yesterday's question was not up to this site's standards. This site's yesterday's standards were as follows: for questions, "is the game is over passive voice". For answers, "Germans typically capitalize every word in a sentence".

Not to be confused with "the tubes" ... as in "going down the tubes" ... in which case it means plumbing.

8:25 PM
YouTheTubes

@Robusto well yes, same for BrE. But that is very much my question. WTF does the phrase as a whole mean, then? "You tube" is then an insult of sorts.
If you take it to be a verb, that at least makes some sense. For very small values of "some". Like, "you broadcast".

@RegDwigнt It means, essentially, "your videos" ...

It doesn't say Your Tube, though.

That is implied.

It is news to me that "you" implies "your". I would struggle to name any other context where it does that.

8:27 PM
In any case, just now I have to pop over to a brewery for a couple minutes. I shall return. Keep up the merry-making while I'm gone, otherwise the place will go down the tubes.

I will open a beer too, then.

@RegDwigнt Have a few more drinks. It'll come to you.
See? We think alike.

I've had more drinks than there are drinks.

I'll leave this window open while I'm gone.

Right. So having given it another thought while rummaging through the depths of my fridge, I believe it makes perfect sense and so henceforth in the name of efficiency I vow to shorten all my "your mom" jokes to "you mom" jokes.
Meanwhile a more important question has arisen. Shall I listen to Les Noces or Pulcinella.

8:50 PM
@RegDwigнt Good question.
BTW, I'm back.
What do you feel like?
I like both, of course. Depends on the mood I'm in.
Young Stravinsky or more mature, neo-classical Igor. You be the judge.

@RegDwigнt I only know the carbon pills.
