@Cerberus whatever us done standing in an alley, it ain't called 'a stand'.
@RegDwigнt Is that with Arnie Hanner?

@Mitch Still ignoring the context...
Anyway, you might very well be standing if you're doing it in an alley.

@Færd 'guffaw' is a weird word. It sounds kind of onomatopoeic, but not really. I mean it sounds weird. It's supposed to sound weird. I think.
@Cerberus I'm just telling you as a native speaker, the 'stand' part doesn't have any sex meaning outside of 'one-night stand'.
But I think you can lie down for whatever you're calling it.
@Færd But I think a 'weird sounding quasi-onomatopoeic word for crying that corresponds somehow to guffaw' might be...
bawl
'sob' doesn't sound as weird

@Mitch And are we talking about stand outside of one-night stand?

Here's a game

Hi!

Hi Cerby! How are you at geography?

Well, that isn't for me to say!
But I like geographic games.

Try to cover Africa
It's diverting.
It has taken a while to get that far.

4:05 AM
@Jolenealaska Nice!
I believe I have seen something like this before.
Yeah, Africa is big!

Undo pointed out that website in the TL like 2 hours ago. I've been toying with it off and on ever since.

Good.
Have you tried Antarctica yet?

it fits well, but then I'd have to move the US
I'm afraid that Greenland has to go That southern tip just screws the pooch.

Poor Greenland.
It's my bedtime now, have fun!

4:22 AM
G'night!

@Mitch It's overrated...just making up shit, basically.

3 hours later…
7:25 AM
This is where I call it quits:

@Jolenealaska Sadly you've left out a small part between Ethiopia and Somalia. you might wanna use Malta or Andorra or something :P

I've got a few gaps :)
And I was starting to resort to US states.

It's a kool website tho

Yes. Very.

I dare you to fill Russia with not a nook or cranny remaining :)
I feel small

7:39 AM
My first pic was the UK on top of China on top of Alaska on top of the contiguous 48. That was enough to keep me playing with the damn thing for three hours. Cool site.

GTG!
bye SE chat

??
Ah, Google answered.

@Mitch Good one! Thanks.

9:56 AM
@Cerberus noobs. Just take two Russias and you'll cover all of Africa and still have enough left to cover the entire European Union.
Or take one Soviet Union and you're basically done.
(Africa: 30 mil km³,
EU: 4 mil,
Russia: 17 mil,
USSR: 22 mil)
Netherlands for scale: 0.04 mil. Suck it up.

@RegDwigнt Yeah, but the shape makes it tougher.

1 hour later…
11:13 AM
@Jolenealaska well yes, precisely. So why don't you ignore it, then. What's the point.

?? I was playing with it. No point, really.
It surprised me that it was as challenging as it was.

OIC.
To me the point of the creators seemed to be to show how large Africa is. In which case taking shapes into account proves the opposite.
Because you can take Africa and won't be able to cover half of the world's countries even though they are much tinier.

Africa was my puzzle. The site doesn't focus on any place in particular. I was just goofing with it.

Q: Can someone tell me what I have

JohnHi people I'm a 16 year old boy and I have these thorts in my head there not just any thorts there special because I think of the future and I can tell people's deaths what time we going to die

this guy. first bad answers, now troll questions
or perhaps not
just the same name

Looks like a winner though! Great question!
I'll ponder for hours.

As I commented, this is a trivial question for someone who can look into the future. Indeed any question is. Because then you simply look to the point in the future where you already know the answer.
If you are able to look into the future but have a question, that means that question cannot have an answer.

@Cerberus Yeah. That's what I just said.

12:59 PM
the question is: is he really seeing the future, or is he setting the people's death day with his mind?

I read it as he has a sore thort and also he's a doctor

a doctor of mind death?
at only 16 years old?
sounds a bit fishy to me

No just a doctor. That's their job.
So he's a prodigy?

john houser

@Jolenealaska Well done!
Now do we have to guess which countries you used?
I can guess most.

1:04 PM
I can't!

But some are too tiny or too light.
Did you perhaps use Hungary twice?

I snuck a few states in there too.

I saw Florida.
And a few shapes I didn't recognise, so I guessed those must be American states as well.
The purple country north of Thailand, do you remember what that is?
At first I was thinking, maybe upside-down Ukraine. But I think you haven't rotated any countries?

No, no rotation

And I would not have guessed that Bolivia is much larger than Turkey!
Oh, I think that orange Hungary was the Czech Republic after all.

1:09 PM
Turkmenistan

@MattE.Эллен Thanks for undeleting. Now the rush for all to non-action.

@Jolenealaska No, I meant the one in Italy.
Turkmenistan is presumably by India's right side?
And is that Uzbekistan, south-east of Italy?
There are a couple of countries I'd need to compare with a map to identify.

Turkmenistan (purple) is north of Thailand (blue). Over the real Ethiopia.

Ooh right.
Yeah, that one was hard!
I see Kyrgyzstan between Iceland and Poland and Slovakia?
That red country there I have no idea.

Oooh, I actually remember that one... The red country is Nicaragua!

1:19 PM
@Mitch no worries. I hsould add my downvote :D

Seeing that picture just after understanding what the website does, I think I would be lucky to correctly identify 6 shapes.
Even after cobbling it together, I couldn't identify half the shapes if my life depended upon it (except for being able to cheat)

@MattE.Эллен For a certain context, I think that answer could be considered not far off.
That context doesn't apply nowadays in almost any circumstances except for maybe some superposh men's club. (ie, old RP people)
In other possibly not relevant news, Ed Tanguay, the author of that answer, has all of his answers in the first week of the opening of ELU, and then stopped.
He didn't fall off the face of the earth but he stopped answering entirely after that week.

1:50 PM
@Mitch that is interesting. I've seen him around. perhaps he's been in chat then
apparently 0 all time messages, so that' snot it

@MattE.Эллен Yes, interesting. He's asked questions over the years, but stopped answering almost immediately
I sorta recognized the name (it stands out) but couldn't remember from where. His answers are all well-up-voted. Could be that's just how the start of the site worked.
The answers aren't awful, and maybe with the newness of the site, those answers worked well for people. (but also note that Mari-Lou's research showed that at least foe the answer in question there was a constistent up-voting pattern over the years.

Hello? IM writing an important business email
what do you do when you do not know if the title is Mr or Dr or Prof ?

4:28 PM
I prefer to ask questions than answering questions.

@WantingtobeanAndroidDevelor if you don't know if they have a title, then use the basic Mr.
if it's an important email, can't you find out from this person's website or from previous correspondence, or from the person who introduced the two of you?

4:49 PM
Ive spent like 3 hours
but he is off the Internet
But i think I will just go with Mr
becasue he provided with his contact
everyone else stated if they are Dr or Mr but for him there is nothing
surely he cannot be offended for being called Mr

If he didn't state it, I would guess that Mr. is fine

I think assuming all people who are in work fields are men with title Mr. may offend some women. If the receiver is by chance a woman, you take the risk of offending her.

5:21 PM
@CaptainBohemian A smart woman will never be offended by a sincere mistake.

5:44 PM
@Jolenealaska I like geography!
@RegDwigнt Aww are you sad the USSR is no more?

6:03 PM
@CowperKettle Likewise a dude, Mrs. Cowperkettle.

6:15 PM
@Cerberus not really no. I'm sad my childhood is gone yes. But the USSR can go the way of the USSR as far as I'm concerned.

@Mitch Sincere.

My point above was more like, you jokers are doing it all wrong.
Like, just take all the countries in Africa and then use them to cover every last square inch of Africa and not a single square inch more. Bam you win.
I briefly considered doing just that and posting the image as a practical joke, but then I remembered that I was lazy.

6:49 PM
@RegDwigнt Never forget!

7:02 PM
@RegDwigнt That was a lot of work you had to do to realize you're lazy
@CowperKettle Lili St. Cyr
@CaptainBohemian I prefer to question the answer
I prefer to answer in a comment, then close as gen reference, namely the comment.

@Mitch but commenting needs sufficient reputation number while asking questions and answering questions don't need any reputation number.

7:23 PM
when I first knew SE and even hadn't registered, I read some answers and had strong wish to comment with my thought, but can't do that.
in Quora, you can do that no matter whether you have asked or answered questions getting upvotes.

@RegDwigнt The way my main teacher said that was performing can be like having a toothache. You are acutely aware of how bad it is, but nobody else knows unless you start making faces.

@Mitch Yeah, this is the way to go.

@CaptainBohemian SE and Quora had different design paths. SE is a little bit more 'gamified', you 'get stuff' for 'doing stuff'

8:01 PM
@RegDwigнt At least I tried
