@JD342 What happens is that individuals who have either built up a good rep score through good contributions (or in rare cases who have been around for a long time getting three downvotes and one upvote for many, many, many years), get to vote to close questions accoding to various criteria. They also have the ability to reopen them too. It takes five votes both ways. So your question might well get reopened. But in any case ...
@JD342 Your question should still be around, because it is useful for other users, and intrinsically for linguists, etymologists and serious language enthusiasts.

I was kind of expecting moderators coming around and breaking some kneecaps

It hasn't disappeared, and wil hopefully providing both answers and linguistic thought fodder for many years to come.

The post was getting a bit too warm for comfort

@JD342 How so?

Not new around here, but comments started to be a wee bit confrontational

12:08 AM
@JD342 I would just concentrate on those answers which dispassionately answer you question using good sources or evidence and ignore everything else.

Peter Taylor pointed that out nicely

@JD342 Sorry about that. I might have contibuted to that impression. However, notice that HeWhoShallRemainNameless deleted most of their comments. And that I asked the conversation to be moved to chat.

Not tryna fault anyone here
It's just unfortunate that the question is about to be nuked
Oh well, I did get my answers, and I thank you guys for that

@JD342 Ha ha! Don't worry :) It's not getting nuked. "Closed" doesn't mean "disappeared" here (unless the qustion is rubish unhelpful for future users). It just means there can't be any new answers!.

So is it
Æba
or
Ahba

12:16 AM
@Araucaria also, they removed some pretty useful comments that contributed a lot in the question. That's unfortunate as well

@JD342 I think it will probably get reopened, but you only have a les than 50% chance of getting any better answers than the ones you already have. You have already contibuted to the useful knowledge available to people looking up info about the word nook - maybe forever! (as much a anything's ever forever)

The ones that got a boatload of +1, that were about to surpass the actual question

@JD342 Well, they're still there for the persistent user.
@JD342 Which one's were they?

I quote the very first one for example

"Breakfast nooks and reading nooks are common here (US, SE Region). I think zen space is a common term used to describe relaxation or meditation nooks now, but it doesn't sound cozy to me."
Kinda baffles me that 4 moderators in a row decided it wasn't useful

@JD342 Yes, I agree.

12:20 AM
Or was it only one? I have no clue

@JD342 Ah, no. It was four normal users who have reasonably high rep (for varying reasons) and one overworked mod who got sent over there because there was a lot of activity and a flag (form me - oops, sorry, but it was meant to be helpful). But they haven't deleted the question, only stopped more answers posts on it.

@JD342 Very unfortunate. It's the most normal and on-topic of questions.

@Mitch Well, you could give it a freindly reopen, for our new user perhaps?

done before I said anything about it

@Mitch Ok, I'll follow your lead ...

Goodbye Porpoise Spit!
Missing You Already!
Sorry
Just finished watching "Muriel's Wedding"
"Muriel's Wedding" is not the same kind of fun times as "Mamma Mia"

@Mitch Depends how old one is ...
Ok, gonna scram @JD342 @Mitch. Have got to do a better impression of giving the impression that I'm trying to do some work. Ciao!

Gee, I have 193 points now
Can I buy stuff with them?
I need to get a haircut

@Araucaria haha you lost that game awhile ago!
@JD342 I've heard that soon they'll be convertible to frequent flyer miles
@Araucaria My memories of MW were of the great ABBA hits. Most of the movie is people being awful to each other in awfully cringy ways.

leeand00I was listening to NPR today and they stated that in NYC some neighborhood store fronts were empty except for Hair Salons...the rest of places have such high rent and such long term lease demands that nobody is leasing the buildings. What's the word for the category of businesses that stayed?

pongpong1I mean, an online shopping mall company is trying to recruit some users for having an interview and research on their sales and their feeling. In this situation, they want to give some money for them in return for their interview. What do you call this 'money'? Interview fee? Interview payment?

For those installing Office, remember never to delete the account you need to create and associate with your Office, otherwise you cannot reinstall, lol.

PeteI've performed Google searches and multiple dictionary searches, scanned lists of medical terminology, and am starting think there's nothing other than "drug interaction", "medication interaction", or variants thereof. I've found synergistic and antagonistic interaction, and categorisation terms...

5:15 PM
@Araucaria No worries
@JD342 I'm here. Let me know how I can help!

@MetaEd hands over a baseball bat

@Mitch bunts

Always ask first if they're right or left handed
@MetaEd bundts

@MetaEd Oh hi

@JD342 Your question is whether "nook" meets your constraints -- appropriate in an informal register, and safe to use without "cranny". The research we'd want to see in such a question is, where did you already look to find an answer, what you found, and why it didn't answer your question -- that is, what are you still in doubt about and why.
You made a good start -- you checked a dictionary and a thesaurus. You could add the name(s) of the works, you consulted, say something about what you found, and say why it left you in doubt.

5:32 PM
Hm okay, I'll say this
To post a question in a forum/q&a platform, I do research on that specific website first, to avoid making a duplicate
so there's that
Furthermore, on Google there doesn't seem to be much specific info by simply writing "can nook be used without cranny", you will in fact see my question as first link now

@JD342 Which is great. We just want the research result details edited into the question, along with, basically, why you still have a question.
So what you are telling me now in chat more or less belongs in the question body, along with the names of the reference works.
This is a big help to experts who happen on your question. It lets them know how far you got and gives them a starting point.

And, since I believe the Stack Exchange platform is full of people smarter than me that know their stuff, posting the question over here would be beneficial for me and everyone

@JD342 The issue isn't whether it's a good question. Closing a question doesn't mean it's been judged a bad question, not necessarily. It means there's something about the question that should probably be addressed before anybody else tries to answer it. Then once the issue is solved, the question gets reopened.
@Mitch Feel free to play devil's advocate here, because I know you expressed a different opinion.

I think the reason that the question got flagged was another one, though
It was more because some started to get a bit chatty on the comments sections
And I believe that the cleaning up was the right call
However, there were some comments from some that weren't part of this problemo, and actually got a ton of likes
So, is it possible for those in particular to restore them back? Are you a good necromancer?

5:55 PM
@JD342 Comments have a limited purpose on the Stack Exchange network -- they really are just for offering you, the asker, constructive feedback. A lot of those comments were off track. So they're preserved in the chatroom created for the purpose.

Well the very first one wasn't that off track I think
It got the same amount of +1's as my question

My breakfast nooks and reading nooks were brilliant. The rest was all rubbish. Jk.

I think KannE belongs in the third point of the third point of the 'When should I comment' section
Maybe he believed that it wasn't good enough to be posted as an answer, but worthwhile info to put in the comment section?
I repeated 'the third point of' two times - sozy it's because I didn't get coffee today

6:13 PM
@JD342 This is why I have an "espresso" machine in my office. Coffee is not optional. :-)

@KannE That's nook very helpful

@KannE I was kinda getting envious that you were about to surpass me on +1's btw

@JD342 We don't really want even partial answers in the comment section.

@MetaEd I just want to point out that at a certain age, ear hair starts to grow really fast

Answers in comments cannot be community edited. They cannot be peer reviewed. They discourage people from posting actual answers. They defeat the core answer ranking process.

6:15 PM
When it stops growing, that's when you gotta start worrying.
ha ha haha ha ha
old age problems

And they drive away askers, which means a good answer will probably never get accepted. The usual response to a comment answer is basically "kthanksbai"

hmm... I wonder if it's kinda like the problem in forums where someone asks a tech question..
and adds detail that X didn't work...
and then some more about Y...

@Mitch Ear hair is for tying your glasses on so they don't fall off when you nap at the keyboard.

and then the last message is "OK I figured it out. Thnksbai"...
with no clue given about how the problem was solved.
I hate that
more than fast growing ear hair
somewhat more
only a little more
maybe about the same
@MetaEd I never nap at the keyboard
I know when to walk away
Do I hear a country-western song in the background?
I feel like you should count your money at the table every so often. Or is even that frowned upon?

@MetaEd I'm kinda going trough popular questions and 90% of comments don't seem to fit very well in the delineations of the help center - which nobody reads anyway

6:21 PM
@MetaEd what if you're asking for clarification and in that request for clarification you give what some might consider partial answer but really it's only a request for a clarification?

But oh well, if these are the rules I can't do much about it

@JD342 EX-effing_ZACTLY. Most of the comments are worse than trash and chatty crap that do nothing for the question (or answer). And the ones that seem to be deleted, the ones that are these nefarious 'partial answers' are actually substantively on point and helpful to future readers. That is, the ones deleted are the ones (that would have been) the most useful.

@JD342 Yes, true. The community curates the posts as time permits. The same rules apply to every post, but the attention actually paid to individual posts varies from day to day, and the way that volunteers understand and handle each situation varies also. So all curation is necessarily a work in progress.

@MetaEd The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

KannE wasn't much of an answer as well, he made an anectote

6:23 PM
Sometimes people make the argument that their comment should get a free pass on the grounds that the community has not already perfectly curated all other similar content on the site with complete self-consistency. I take a dim view of that argument.

I thought they made too big a deal out of 'Doubting' Thomas, when all he really did was...
> The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

Gonna go have some pasta
Have a great one boys
/girls

@JD342 maybe we'll have some great pasta too.

@Mitch There appears to be some type of debate over this question. I'd love to get into it, but stores are selling things to eat right now. As my daughter said when I tried to buy Play-Doh for my grandchildren--'They can't have it because we're fun-killers'...'Yes, Mom, we really are.' So, just admit it. I'll still love you...probably, but you are what you are. Nooks and crannies are fun.

It's pasta-ble.

6:26 PM
I think that should be the farewell and greeting of some culture
"Have a great pasta!"
The diabetesists

@KannE When play-doh gets into crevices in the couch. eugh
wait...who are the funkillers? your grandchildren?
@MetaEd I hear your request and have no idea what to say. I am thought deprived at the moment.
More importantly. I don't think I've been hungry for a week.

@Mitch I try to avoid that when I make comments. But sometimes it's unavoidable. A great example is word requests with no research whatsoever. I might offer a link to a reputable dictionary, and that link might more or less answer the question or at least make it unnecessary.

...which really means I've been well-fed for awhile (two words? one? whatever).
which reminds me...snack time!
@MetaEd some might say you should have just given the answer.

@Mitch Sure ... except that ELU is not a thesaurus.

6:32 PM
@MetaEd You've probably seen my what-should-be-a-cut-and-paste-auto-comment "What did a thesaurus tell you?"
And often I'll go to a thesaurus and it won't have the obvious answer I was thinking of
but then a responsible person would have answered just like I just suggested to you
and then a person who just popped into the room would ask why are you italicizing all the ends of your sentences
But if you're curious, Nilla wafers. That is, my snack is Nilla wafers.

6:56 PM
@MetaEd I'd like to see a debate between Pastafarians and Unitarians. Both sides would immediately concede with 'Whatever'

@Mitch So a debate over anything would end the same way?

@Mitch which is to say (@MetaEd) that Thomas just didn't believe those other guys. He doubted them not the actual insanity of coming back to life ... oh... good reason to doubt. Also, those guys are always screwing around.
@MetaEd Even a debate on intolerance.
If I want an irrational debate on philosophy, I'll go take a nap.
Have you ever tried to do algebra in your dreams? It all works out until you wake up.

Have you ever tried to read in your dreams?

Sure.
Who hasn't?
But what's really hard in my dreams is typing on my phone.
I always get the wrong words.

@MetaEd That sounds familiar. I think I may have 'done' it but on reflection it was really fuzzy letters. I just 'knew' what they meant to say

7:02 PM
It takes hours, or I just have to give up, in my dreams.

@Cerberus turn on dream-correct

It's on!
But it puts out the wrong words!

Did any body ever respond to your messages?

I could never compose any to send.
So you've never had this dream?

phone typing?

7:03 PM
The experience/emotion is akin to moving your legs in a dream but being unable to move.

that doesn't sound crazy, but I can't claim to have dreamt anything like that.

@Mitch Yes.
Be glad!

But, to be honest, I haven't remembered dreams in a long time.

Hmm.
That could be the sign of a sound sleeper.

I am dreaming (that's a bad sign if you're not)... but I just don't remember the contents anymore

7:06 PM
Still, it could be a sign that you're good at sleeping.

usually I'm towards the end of a dream and I'm slowly waking up and I think wow that was totally weird about the... I gotta tell someone that I... with the... what ... where are my slippers, ahhh... there.

Alas!

7:20 PM
@MetaEd should I say it?

@JD342 ?

@MetaEd pinky promise me that you won't get mad at me

What makes you think I have a pinky?

Oh no
I hope I haven't offended you
Are you an automaton?

Only when I'm dreaming.

7:22 PM
Then pinky promise it virtually

I'm good with friends but few more aren't a biggie
I'm not gonna say it if you don't pinky promise
(folding my arms)

@MetaEd Oh? takes notes

Let's just say that @MetaEd pink promises, and let's get to the juicy stuff.

7:27 PM
Aw yiss

Wait...your question was reopened. What's the problem now?

I'm gonna give my cents but I still think you're cool in my book
I find that removing @Mitch reply to your comment a wee bit dodgy
But he's keeping his cool, so it's fine, we're fine

@JD342 Wait...what?

@Mitch I can't find your constructive criticism in reply of MetaEd's comment. It was you who made it, right?

7:50 PM
@JD342 You have a better memory than mine, and mine seems about as good with reality as with my dreams right now. Did I make a comment on the 'nook' question or any answers? I felt like I only made it here. Or did I say something about how on-topic that question was?

@JD342 Plot twist: That's not me in the gif.

I wasn't fooled. I'm pretty sure your hair is not black and tied in a pony tail on top.

8:13 PM
I tried to retrieve the page from cache, but to no avail
So I got no proof on my part, thus I'm giving the benefit of the doubt, also Mitch can't seem to remember it
But I don't think I went mad—yet

@JD342 ah but you haven't specified what it is which had the option of benefit or not for which you chose the former.

I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to MetaEd

@Færd I'm so worried for Brazil.
That article makes the evangelical churches seem even more dangerous and corrupt.

But I do remember that one person—which I recall is you, Mitch—put in the comments section of my question a constructive criticism to MetaEd, telling that my question followed the conventions and is was alright. I remember it started with something like, "@MetaEd I fail to see the closeability of this question..." and had 3 +1's last time I checked.

I am afraid that Brazil's road to liberal democracy will be set back at least a decade, and possibly much longer, by next week's election.
My only hope is that parliament can provide enough of a counterweight.

8:27 PM
@JD342 Sure. That's kind of what we want to avoid, though. A discussion or debate is best carried on in chat. Consider that the comment was addressed to me. One sign of a good comment is that it is addressed to the author of the post.

And I am still assuming that the military won't be led to a coup by Bolsonaro.

Hello , I miss you folks

@MetaEd Your house, your rules I suppose

@Færd I've come to the conclusion that a presidential system is truly inferior. Except the kind that Italy has, where the president basically only has veto power and not much else (so just a constitutional role).

Was it my forum I would've banned my moderator for that

8:33 PM
For what?

I'm not replying to you, @Cerberus

So...
@MetaEd That doesn't make much sense to me.

...I thought that "for what" was referred to me, sozy

@Cerberus Is it correct to say : I missed you folks

@MetaEd That "sign" doesn't make much sense to me.
@Educ Sure!
And hello.

8:36 PM
Hello there

Thank you

@Cerberus I got confused, I thought you understood that the "was it my forum..." was in reply of your "I've come to the conclusion....", so I said that I'm not replying to you

I'm sorry, I don't understand you at all.

mh okay
me and MetaEd were chatting with each other
then the message I sent 'Was it my forum I would've banned my moderator for that' was in the context of what I was saying previously
But ater a message you wrote 'For what?'
So I thought that your message was in reply of mine, which led me to think that you thought I was replying to you

8:46 PM
By "previously" you mean you were talking about banning Mr Ed for something he did?

Therefore I replied to you with ''I'm not replying to you, @Cerberus"

@JD342 Okay, but you never answered.

@CowperKettle I'm not the best person to ask; I like things that cause pause. For me, it's like "the bold" started singing 'Oh, she's a jolly good...' and then, for a moment, a camera zoomed in on her besties...shy like in a knowing, happy-for-her way. Probably not what you intended; it never is, but it's a sweet moment worth remembering, I think.

@Cerberus Well I have 208 points, I can't ban anyone

And somehow I was confused by your later lines.
But now it seems clear to me.
@JD342 Of course I know that.
It was clear that you were joking, but I didn't understand to whom or about what.
But now I know it was about something from your conversation with Mr Ed.

8:50 PM
@Cerberus I was talking about that a comment that was confuting the decision to put on hold the question, which got few likes, got mysteriously removed thereafter

Right.

If it was the moderator who decided to remove it, then that would've been a dicey move from my perspective
But I don't know the rules, so he might've done it out of good intentions

@JD342 The rules are that discussions go in chat, not comments. Comments are for improving the post.
Comments are ephemera.

Gotcha, let's hug each other now

You don't want to catch strep throat.

9:00 PM
Bleh, discussions are held in comments all the time, and the site benefits from it.

OK--Enough is Enough! I haven't had so many upvotes on a comment since I was the only person (still alive in the world probably) who had heard the phrase--WANES in comparison--and been told by my teacher (when she was still alive, of course)--It's not FEIGNS in comparison! I demand to be...nothing really...oh, hugged; that's it. Jk, again.

You made me giggle KannE
Just so you know

@Mitch No, no, not ear hair...I think you meant goat hair...spiraling out of control from someone's chinny-chin-chin...so that would be pig hair...maybe pinkish or semitransparent.

@Feeds LOL

@KannE ah.. that's the difference between men and women...un momentito por favor...
looking for a quote
"Stupid as a man, say the women: cowardly as a woman, say the men" Nietzsche
I think that accounts for unexpected body hair too.

11:19 PM
@Mitch You got your hair in my peanut butter!

11:53 PM
Uh, here's a personal question that just came up about the difference between men and women, sort of... For example, on a construction site, after the only woman there leaves...does the foreman start calling the men in training "stupid" for making mistakes like cutting a precut stud, for example? And, if so, do most of the men consider that verbal abuse or just regular talk? I have no idea if it's a real problem or not, in a man's world, that is. It would be a problem in mine.
