@Vitaly Aha, right. I'd write from 1016 plasma cells.

9:13 PM
Hi everyone :) I need some help finding a word.
Oh, nevermind :D while writing the question I came up with the answer :P

user19161
@Waldir There is power here. Just coming to this room solves the problem.

I think there's a law describing the effect :) something similar to Murphy's law ^^
Can't find it now, but PhD comics has a nice illustration of this: phdcomics.com/comics.php?f=821

@WillHunting Shouldn't the power has an article?

user19161
@Gigili It is an uncountable noun there.

(well, it's not exactly the same thing, but I think you get the idea)

9:19 PM
Right.
@Waldir Yeah, I got the idea. No worries!

:D

user19161
I made an interesting observation. Besides the bottom starred message on the right, the others have two stars each.

@WillHunting You're welcome ;)
Now there's one with 3 stars. Sax and violins... very nice pun!

Is "we need to use a more accurate experiment which confirms their positiveness or negativeness." correct?
Or should it be "positive and negative qualities"?
Or what?

user19161
@Gigili It is not clear what is meant by positive or negative.

9:25 PM
well, "thier" needs fixing, for one :P

@Waldir I have no idea what you're talking about.

oh wow how do we change previous messages? :P

user19161
@Gigili The pencil mark gives away the crime.

I always had fun with this on Skype, didn't know it was implemented elsewhere :)

user19161
@Waldir Using mouse and keyboard.

9:26 PM
ha, just like in Skype. cool.

@WillHunting It's referring to the results of a test .. "showing infection:positive / not:negative"
Or experiment is also correct? Whatever.

user19161
@Gigili It is not clear what is meant by "showing infection".

@WillHunting as in “tested positive for HIV”

Okay, the text is not clear if we continue that way.

why not "confirms their results"?

user19161
9:28 PM
@Gigili Indeed!

user19161
@Gigili We need a more accurate test to know if infection has occurred.

user19161
After a direct translation, think about the meaning and try to rewrite it clearly.

Yes, that's what I am trying to do.

Or if you know exactly what is supposed to be infected, e.g. samples, you could say: We need a more accurate test to determine if the samples have been infected. — or something along these lines. I am bringing it up because it might not be clear whether Will's sentence is referring to the whole cell culture or just specific cells.

user19161
We need to do more tests on Will to know if he has been infected.

9:34 PM
@Vitaly Is "to confirm their positive/negativeness" wrong?

@Gigili It is not clear what is meant by positive or negative.

Seriously one should not do technical translations unless he knows the context and is trained in the field.

user19161
@Gigili It depends on whether and how the terms poitive and negative have been mentioned in the text.

What particular infection, anyway? And what is infected?

user19161
I have been infected with a bad cough but this is a small matter.

No, scratch that. That sounds awkward.

user19161
9:40 PM
He tested positive for HIV is a common expression.

user19161
But in other contexts I don't know the accepted terminology.

@Vitaly Infection with HSV2, all taken samples are infected.
@Vitaly I saw that, I don't have a choice.
Stop making me feel bad, okay? Okay.

I'm still looking for a good expression to describe the effect that "verbalizing a question might lead you to figure out the answer yourself" but google isn't helping :(
quoted expressions yield no results, and unquoted ones bring up all sorts of unrelated stuff
any ideas?

@Gigili OK, I'm with Will on that one then:

@Gigili We need a more accurate test to know if infection has occurred.

user19161
@Waldir What kind of expression are you looking for? Verbalizing a question helps in figuring out its answer sounds good already.

9:47 PM
@Waldir It's always like that, Google is totally useless on that matter.
@Vitaly Thank you.

I just wanted to find if there's a law (or maybe an expression used in psychological circles) coined for this, or find a page describing the effect... something like that

user19161
@Waldir Ah then you should ask on a psychology forum!

lol
well a pop-culture term like murphy's law would do just fine :)

user19161
You may be interested in the term crystallization though.

The audience effect is the impact that a passive audience has on a subject performing a task. It was first formally noted in various psychology studies in the early 20th century. During some studies the presence of a passive audience facilitated the better performance of a simple task; while other studies show the presence of a passive audience inhibited the performance of a more difficult task. In 1965, Robert Zajonc proposed Drive theory as an explanation of the audience effect. See also * Audience theory * Social facilitation * Social inhibition * Social loafing

9:53 PM
@Vitaly, nice! that's quite close, let me read it
oh it's really that small :/ I thought this was only an excerpt
hmmm... looks like it probably should be merged to "Social facilitation": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_facilitation

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary is a neo-Gothic church that serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Moscow. Located in the Central Administrative Okrug, it is one of only two Catholic churches in Moscow and the largest in Russia. The construction of the cathedral was proposed by the Czarist government in 1894. Groundbreaking was in 1899; construction work began in 1901 and was completed ten years later. Three-aisled and built from red brick, the cathedral is based on a design by architect Tomasz Bohdanowicz-Dworzecki. The style wa...

My name is now Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili.
We knew that about you already.

You are too late to that party. It only lasted five minutes.

Funny, but I think I was celebrating during those exact same five minutes. Coincidence? Hardly.

Huhuh. You said hardly. Huhuh.
Also, if you were celebrating, it probably was a coinci-dance.

10:02 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 No dancing in chat.

Do you play LOL?

It's a coinci-dance. Not a real dance.
Quincy, M.E., also called Quincy, is a United States television series from Universal Studios that aired from October 3, 1976, to September 5, 1983, on NBC. It stars Jack Klugman in the title role, a Los Angeles County medical examiner. The show resembled the earlier Canadian television series Wojeck, broadcast by CBC Television, and took some inspiration from Los Angeles coroner Thomas Noguchi. John Vernon, who played the Wojeck title role, later guest starred in the third-season episode "Requiem For The Living". The first half of the first season of Quincy was broadcast as 90-minute t...

Kind of a "safety" dance?

With syringes, yes.

@Reg: Can you look in one of your many tabs and find the one where some creationist wandered in here and someone cold-cocked him with a funny putdown? I wanted to show it to my son.

10:04 PM
That would be Mahnax right there.
You can cold-cock him live right now.

Mahnax is a creationist? Or the bane of creationists?

Feb 15 at 6:07, by Mahnax
@Cerberus I am a creationist, sure.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Hi!

Wo?
This all is such fun to Mr Khachaturyan's music.

Aww, and I was just starting to like the little guy. Double face-palm
@RegDwightѬſ道 You have nothing to Gayane by making such a statement.

What in the world is a power shower?

user19161
@FumbleFingers: I read somewhere that a power shower, at least, can use more water and energy than a bath. – Barrie England 41 mins ago

user19161
@Robusto Don't forget to eat too.

10:55 PM
@WillHunting someone who shows power!
Like me. Just a second.
