Hmm, from the '20s I see. Interesting.

She may sound a bit...goody-goody? to the modern ear.
But I likes.

Sounds fine so far. Don't forget, I have eclectic tastes.

Naturally.

Well, I gotta get ready to go. Talk to you later.

Have fun!

12:04 AM
I will surely try! Ciao!

I'm sure it will be great.
Adios.

12:30 AM
"What is the origin of the term White Supremacy?" I was dissappointed to see that my question was closed as off topic. I have already moved it twice. There is nowhere else for it to go. Someone gave a very good answer, and I think it deserves to be seen. I also didn't have the chance to mark it as accepted. I was hoping for more answers, too. english.stackexchange.com/questions/389833/…

@JohnDee Voted to reopen.

Thanks, parachute head!

Haha, funny American accent.
Resulting in such a weird homophonous sentence.
(That one was new to me.)

I didn't realize where i was ;)

Oh?
I think this here is hardly England, though...

12:39 AM
No, but you probably live in a former British colony!

I'm searching history.
While large parts of the world were colonised by Britain, I can't find any records of such a feat here.

12:53 AM
How many votes does it take?

> The threat to topple the head of state of a fellow GCC member was not even made anonymously. It was made by the man whose job it is to represent Saudi interests in the US. Salman al-Ansari, the president of the Saudi American Public Relation Affairs Committee, tweeted:
> “To the emir of Qatar, regarding your alignment with the extremist government of Iran and your abuse of the Custodian of the two sacred mosques, I would like to remind you that Mohammed Morsi did exactly the same and was then toppled and imprisoned.
During my recent trip to the Middle East I stated that there can no longer be funding of Radical Ideology. Leaders pointed to Qatar - look!

1:21 AM
@JohnDee the closure due to 'lack of research' has not been addressed. You should edit your question minimally to say something like 'I looked everywhere and couldn't find anything'. Sure, you should probably do it before claiming it.

1:52 AM
@JohnDee 5.
@Færd I'll read it!
But obviously SA would like to punish any support for Iran among its allies.
It's funny how the Emir says it was all fake and hacked.

2:08 AM
@Færd I'm not sure what to think of the article.
It is clear that SA and a few other states have launched an campaign to pressure or damage Qatar.
But I find the details in the article a bit difficult to judge.
The website has possible ties to the Qatar government, it should be noted.
That is, its director used to hold an important post in the organisation of Al Jazeera, which is funded by the family ruling Qatar.
I'm not so convinced that what the Emir said on television was fake.

3:09 AM
@Mitch I couldn't find anything on the internet. The responder found the earliest attested use in the Oxford English Dictionary (which was about India). He also highlighted a few examples which seemed to show a change of use. I'm still not sure when the term arose or when two words, white and supremacy, were used together. The only other thing is the google books frequency chart. I don't think there's a publication about it, yet.
@Mitch It's an Implicit thing. Otherwise every question would have to start, "I looked everywhere and couldn't find anything, so...)
I hope my "probably lived in a British colony" didn't sound arrogant. I simply was pointing out why someone might speak English.

Is there a single word for almost perished goods? Like food with only a few days until they go bad.

2 hours later…
11:55 AM
@Cerberus I'm not sure about the details either. Judging the exact origins of a piece of news is not easy, especially if the circumstances don't strongly suggest that one of the possibilities is true. In fact, I think with all the madness and instabilities in SA and especially after Iran's presidential election some members of the Gulf Cooperation Council are starting to consider leaning toward Iran and escaping from under SA's hegemony.
But fake or genuine, I fear this incident will be used as just an excuse to take savage, disastrous measures against another of our neighbors and we'll end up with the ruins of a nation on our hands, having forgotten what all the fight was about.
(Correction: fake or true genuine)
So I think there are more important things to focus on than the origins of some tweets.

@Færd I would welcome any shift away from SA, but I'd have preferred a neutral stance over leaning towards Iran.
Yes, the heart of the matter is that SA is trying to punish harshly any neighbour that dares to show the faintest sign of improving relations with Iran.
@Færd Or "real".
I do wonder why SA is so hysterical about Iran.
How much of a threat is Iran really to SA?

12:39 PM
Mornin.

1:19 PM
@JohnDee I'm just telling you why I think it was closed giving with how your question was written (I voted to reopen). This ain't yahoo answers, people expect you to actually show some effort. Just asking a bald 'what is X?' without some work on your side is off-putting. You can do the simplest of google searches for 'origin "white supremacy"' to get -something-. If you just ask a bald question, we don't know what you know and so it can open things up to very broad wordy answers.
@MetaEd Same to you.
and I mean it to sting

1:30 PM
@Cerberus how is anybody a threat to anybody? Mostly psychological (but yes competition over resources, which I don't think there is between the two). They are the two large stable military powers with visions of leadership in the area but on opposite sides of a few things: sunni vs shiite, Arab vs non-Arab, US-backed vs alone, monarchy vs republic, mono-cultural vs multicultural (lots of non-Persian subcultures)
(all those labels are qualifiable by themselves but are incontrovertible distinctions)
Now that I think about it, it's probably that they are the two big guys now and one is back by US and one has US sanctions.
also, just found this. Iran-SA relations on wikipedia
@JohnDee I agree, that does sound implicit, but is often not. It's very annoying to strt an answer and have the OP say 'I knew that but what about X' or on the other hand 'I don't know what you're talking about' (because they know nothing at all). Do the reader the favor of skipping those steps
Wait..are you John Dee or Tyler Watt?

2:21 PM
@Mitch That's an interesting page.
Personally, I think there's the animosity between the peoples and the hostile rivalry between the governments, both heavily fueled by the religious divide and historical grudges, but in different ways.

2:54 PM
@Færd Right. But I wonder how long it's been there (given that Iran was supported by the US up to 79) and Iran's primary adversary was Iraq either before then but certainly after then, until the US invasion in 2003. That page seems strange on wikipedia because it's analysis rather than factual, so not clear how much is let's say opinionated.

@Mitch Morning. By the way, is it safe to talk about politics in public chats like this one? I wouldn't know, the internet can be strange sometimes.
Who knows who else is reading our transcripts here. Could be IS. I mean who knows?. I'm exaggerating, but you get the idea I guess.
I would rather talk about "sex" than "politics" in public chats (depending upon the audience of course)

@Averruncus Safe? 1-nothing on the internet is 'safe' unless you yourself intentionally encrypt/VPN/etc.

@Mitch So do you use those precautions?

that said, the main chats on SE are indexed by google See the third link

That I know.
Being 'indexed' doesn't say anything about its safety I reckon.

3:04 PM
So there is varying ease with which things can be viewed. If you know what to look for you can search for what people say here with google. Or if you care, you can just come here to this site and use its search. or you can just scan the transcript.
so if you are concerned that people will take things you say and judge you... it's just like real life!
@Averruncus then what do you mean by 'safe'?

I'm not afraid in real life. I don't know why.
I'm not afraid on the internet either per se. Just uncomfortable with certain topics because I can be quite vocal sometimes.

People are more polite and reserved in real life.
Except for some people.
they can be really in your face.

I mean I feel strongly about certain "political" topics, so I try to stay away, on purpose. My language could offend people and rile them up quickly that' why.
Although I try to be diplomatic in what I say

see? I did feel like editing because people would get the wrong idea. making a joke about overgeneralization, based on my personal experience, but touching a hot point for a lot of people.

Yeah.

3:08 PM
@Averruncus On ELU chat I find that people are fairly tolerant. they may have their own ideas that are not the same as others, but the discussion isn't very heated
unless it is @Cerberus and @Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 about iPhone vs Samsung. Man, at each other's throats.
Which is funny because they're both idiots.

I mean I have muslims in my family too, and I have lived in the middle east, so I feel strongly about certain things. For instance, I am highly against US airstrikes on muslims etc. It is a general comment by the way, I would rather not continue it heh.

no problem at all.
Oh I forgot to mention that @Cerberus has certain notions about 'political correctness' that verge on the ... I hesitate to say... callous, which attitude will eventually lead to him burning in the fires of hell for all eternity. That and a perverse tolerance for cats. That is just not right.

haha

I meant 'Cats', the musical. I just don't get why people like that.
It goes beyond taste. It's a failure of personality.
Are you listening now, IS?

Ok, not them, but intelligence agencies perhaps.
But anyway... so I was saying...

3:19 PM
go on...

Well it sucks.
I mean I don't know how to put it in words.

the bombing stuff?

Yeah, but no.
Wait I'm typing.

chat needs the dynamic '...'

I have a friend, a muslim girl about my age, and she wants to visit Syria these days. I told her not to do it. It is a spiritual trip by the way, like what people do in Mecca and Medina so she is doing it
I mean it sucks hearing about it. All those bombings etc. and she is going there.

3:21 PM
Are there pilgrimage sites in Syria?

She is not nuts by the way.
Yeah, several.
She is nice and all. A good friend but kind of religious. But not extreme, mind you.

for Islam? I know there are a few in Iraq that Shiites want to go to, which poses problems for Iranians.

Yeah she is a muslim.

@Averruncus I can't remember... are you from ... Northern India or Pakistan?

She must be taking a car or a bus because flights are cancelled in a war torn country
I didn't ask much.
I mean I would, once she returns :)

3:25 PM
Yeah the 'war-torn' part would encourage me to avoid until things cool down.

Yeah

presumably with her family?

Yeah.
But not with younger people like kids.

@Mitch what? Neither of us likes iPhone OR Samsung!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 pfft. infidel

3:26 PM
@Mitch This is true though

only an infidel would admit to ... oh. OK.

@Mitch Thank you

wait...which ones do you like?

@Mitch I like the Google phones. Lately those have been LG and HTC.

Android?

3:28 PM
@Mitch Sorry I forgot to reply, I meant if what we said here became an issue and someone wanted to take an action would they be able to? Or are we safe here?

The latest is made by HTC but not even branded HTC, only branded Google

and Cerb? You can speak for him

@Averruncus what kind of safety are you concerned about?

That is to say, can anyone in real life harass us for what we write here?
I am not talking about mod flags btw.

@Averruncus That depends on how anonymous you are and to what lengths you go to to cover your tracks
The more information you share, the easier it becomes for someone to harass you
I've had people track down my personal email address and write insane screeds

3:30 PM
@Averruncus action? they can say things back, but I'm guessing that is not what you mean by action. They could click the button 'flag this message as spam/offensive' and that has escalating consequences that could potentially lead to not being able to chat.

it didn't last long so it was kinda funny at the time. But it could be worse.
People have been doxxed
it depends on how much information you make available.

I see.

The more the site, and the internet at large, knows about you, the easier it will be to find you in real life.

but are stormtroopers going to rappel down from the top of your building, crash through your windows and bundle you off to an undisclosed site?
oops, forgot the flash-bang canisters.

hah

3:32 PM
@Mitch That depends, doesn't it?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 really?

in some countries, atheist bloggers get lynched by angry mobs

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 yeah. people are jerks

@Mitch I mean, it's because I don't enforce a strict anonymous persona here that that is possible.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 good point.

3:33 PM
So your physical safety depends on how anonymous you remain and also to what level people in your own location are willing to go to lengths to find you and unmask you.

I don't know much about the internet, I was just curious but the most dangerous situation I have been in real life was when the husband of the woman I was friends with became angry with me in the past and went postal on me (kind of). But I handled it very well. Pretty decently too.

to be more open about that. WTH. It is the 21st century. and people are still claiming ghosts and leprechauns are actual things that do things? I totally get it if you just walked out of the rainforest with a skin from a jaguar you wrastled yourself, but everybody has some education nowadays.

Erm, I hope I didn't go off in a tangent there.

@Averruncus the hello talk person?

@Averruncus Well, let's say the site owners or one of their employees developed some reason to want to harm you. They have enough data on you to track you down to a particular neighbourhood, probably.

3:36 PM
@Averruncus nope.of rather, tangents is how we traffic in here. also mixed metaphors.

@Mitch Heh, no. She was local, not an American or from the internet. :)

@Averruncus This room used to be called "The Incomprehensible Room" for good reason

hah

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 haha. jokes on them. they'd be underwhelmed by the neighborhood.
maybe that's it. the embarassment of it all.
"we expected rather more of you"
@Averruncus They changed the name, because, non-ironically it was difficult to understand.
a little misleading
but not false

The Incomprehensible Room sounds nice.

3:39 PM
If you use more than one website frequently, it may be possible to correlate your accounts on the sites until any attacker can build up enough of a profile on you to determine some identifying things about you. For example, in this chat I've openly discussed that I live in Toronto... that narrows down the search for me quite a bit.

wiat. not misleading at all. just not welcoming.
misleading s one way of being not welcoming.

I mean I would love to be part of "The Incomprehensible Room" .
Sounds cool

but not all ways of being not welcoming.

If you can find my other profiles on other sites, you will probably end up finding my real name, then finding my real location isn't that hard.
Oh, it lived up to its name quite a few times.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 storm troopers dispatched

3:40 PM
@Mitch I'm not worried about them, they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with their guns.

temporary delay. storm troopers waiting for ducks to cross road in front of traffic

@Mitch Meh, what a bunch of sissies they are. :)

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I have never tried to not make sense.

hm... or never not tried to ...
sigh
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Wasn't there a leader in some army whose famous last words were "They couldn't hit the broad side of a"?

3:42 PM
anyway, gotta run. I just popped in to set Mitch straight about phones. ttyl

Bye.
It's Mitch and me again.
So where were we?

cats

Yeah, cats are nice.
Let's about about 'em.

and how despicable they are

Speaking of them I had one in my bedroom this afternoon, not kidding. It came from outside. It never happens here. Almost never, I mean they don't just pop in the house uninvited.

3:45 PM
are there a lot of stray cats in your town?

Not a lot, but some, yes.
Kids love them.
Like my little nephew for instance.
I don't like them because they are not clean per se.
I mean they live in the street.

there are none here, or rather I see a couple cats around here but they are all 'owned' and go back home after touring the neighborhood.

I see.
Nice I guess, right?

I live too far north to be good for outdoor cats

What about deer?
Do you have them there in the North?
I'm guessing you get wild tigers and reindeer there.
Not sure.
What's the plural of "reindeer"? Is it with "s"?

3:49 PM
the same as plain old 'deer'. no extra s or anything

Oh I found a related question.
Cool

4:24 PM
IE always asks me if I want it to be my default browser, no matter how many times I tell it "No, and don't ask again."

I think there is an option which says "Do you want to use Firefox/Chrome as your default browser" when installing those browsers, did you tick it? Also I guess you could tick the "Don't ask me again" option.
I can't be specific about where to find them.
I don't remember well.
Anyway, on a more lighthearted note, I guess Internet Explorer has a lot of self esteem asking that question. =)

It does. It is so needy. It knows it is inferior.

Heh

4:44 PM
@Averruncus It had so much promise when younger
It got in with a bad crowd
Didn't make 'good choices'

@Mitch Right, it must be a combination of those factors. But still, it seems so silly: surely neither country will really invade the other, so I would expect dislike, but not actually feeling threatened by the other.

@Cerberus it's hard to know not being in the middle of it and constantly thinking about it.

@Mitch I am already in the underworld.

It's always silly from the outside. And from the inside, how can anybody not take this seriously, it's your life
@Cerberus So it wont be a long commute.

I consider political correctness a mixture of superstition (probably culturally derived from how words can be taboo in religions), intolerance, insult, and American cultural imperialism.

4:53 PM
You can say all sorts of bad things about Walmart and Humvees and anti-intellectualism and oblivious entitlement but the worst thing about American cultural imperialism is that McDonald's french fries are undeniably the best in the world.

That's the worst thing?

Yeah. Because they're really good, you can't totally want to get rid of American Cultural Imperialism

Umm, they're not?
They're rather bad.
Flemish fries is where it's at.

@Cerberus Your face is bad
I said it's undeniable

Which one?
denies

4:56 PM
and you have the audacity to attempt to contradict me

audes

struggles to imagine that

"Politically correct" is used as an insult in the US by people whose feelings are hurt when they are reminded to be considerate of others.
5

But I have to leave this fruitful discussion now, adieu!

Oh, I'm sorry, I see the problem. It's that you have no taste
literally.
you must have had a terrible fall as a child.

4:57 PM
He's a dog. He has different taste.

I'm an Internet avatar, just ones and nulls.
So what did you expect.

or dropped on your head just that one time extra too many

Bai.

@Cerberus wait...was that a pun?
Yes. Yes it was. Because potatoes are a fruit in the US.

@Mitch "and you have the audacity to attempt to contradict me" Your alpha male side is showing, I meant your douchebag side. Oh I kid I kid. =)
I'm just teasing.
I knew you were joking.

5:00 PM
@Averruncus ducks finally cross road

hah

stormtroopers stub out cigarettes

lel

looks at watch Lunch time?
SWAT van goes through McD's drive through

kicks one stormtropper's ass
does some Krav Maga and escapes

5:02 PM
@Averruncus All I know about Krav Maga I learned from the Simpsons.

I see. I hear it is quite efficient.
They teach it in Israel to soldiers. Mainly I mean. In other places too.
You say good things about Simpsons, I will definitely watch it one day.
I just never liked that show due to yellow colors in it, like I mentioned once. =)

@Averruncus I don't really watch any of these things on purpose, but I hear good things about the Simpsons.

I see, cool.

all I can usually say is 'of the very few things I've seen, I like/find funny/meh/find embarassing/hate/find dispicable'
The Simpson writers introduced 'embiggen' and 'cromulent' and 'd'oh' among others to the world. And re-popularized 'don't have a cow' and 'ay carumba'. Any others? I'm sure there's an Oxford Dictionaries blog page about it.

I like embiggen and cromulent. I use those.

5:33 PM
They fill a glaring void.
Dang it! I just thought of one: 'Enlarge' is already good enough!
or increase.

6:24 PM
@Mitch Growtle.

7:05 PM
@MetaEd the latest Pokémon

@Mitch Doesn't it evolve into a Gropius?

7:45 PM
@MetaEd And then, in turn, into POTUS.

7:56 PM
Pictures. We need pictures.
Too bad Gumshoos has already been tied to POTUS.

@MetaEd I'd rather not, actually, if it's all the same to you.

3 hours later…
