I have trouble understanding what "Feel the Bern" means... would this question fit here, or ELL, or none? Thanks!

3:18 AM
@NicolasRaoul It is probably about Bernie Sanders?

@Cerberus: Yes but why say "Feel the Bern" rather than just "Bernie Sanders"?

That is a common figure of speech in America, but I don't know when that started.
It doesn't mean much, probably.

"It doesn't mean much, probably" <- That's usually at that time that languages get interesting :-)

5:35 AM
"The life is once." seems to be incorrect. What do you think?

@YasashiiEirian This is absolutely incorrect.

@Mahnax OK. Thanks. Could you make it correct? My attempt is "We live just once.". But it is a bit far from the original one.

@YasashiiEirian You seem to be trying to say that you only get to live life once, yes?

@Mahnax Yes. Not only I but also all human beings live just once.

@YasashiiEirian You only live once is unfortunately apt.

5:40 AM
@Mahnax So what is your recommendation?

@YasashiiEirian That depends on your audience. What's the context?

The audiences are all people who read the billboard.

Oh, you're advertising? Well, who is your target market?

For example, a company that provides buggy jumping services.

Buggy jumping?
Bungee jumping, perhaps?

5:45 AM
@Mahnax OK. It is.
I will be back in 5 minutes.

I would go with "you only live once".

How about "We only live once."?

Ehhh, sounds unnatural.
This "you" is general.

@Mahnax Why?
Why?

@YasashiiEirian Hard to say.

6:01 AM
@Mahnax Please make it soft. :-)

@YasashiiEirian It's simply one of those things that sounds more natural to a native speaker—while it is not incorrect to say "we only live once", "you only live once" sounds like a more useful and natural phrase.

@Mahnax OK. Thanks. :-)

6:22 AM
@YasashiiEirian You're welcome. Hope I helped.

11:54 AM
@Arrowfar How were your exams?

user116848
@Jasper Hey! Welcome back.

user116848
@Jasper A bit tough.

user116848
The result was a <ahem> bit embarrassing as I had imagined. I'll retake one paper again.

user116848
And you? How are you?

user174558
I am not too good. I did not start studying this year, because my mind is still very confused.

2:08 PM
@Jasper I'm glad you are back. I'm sorry that you didn't start your studies. There's always next year!
@NicolasRaoul You could try it on EL&U if you haven't already posted somewhere else. It's a play on "Feel the Burn" which is a common expression that is used to exhort people to work harder at their exercise routine. It means something like "Keep it up! You can do it!"
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Success! I actually found the correct exe and old drivers finally yesterday. I had to run it in XP compatibility mode, but I DID IT. Ha!
I also bought two micro SD cards and a new battery for a total of about $12.
So now the boys will have their own tiny controllers. The eldest thinks it is cool, but is disappointed that he can't call or text on it. Kids these days.

Where is that Patriot fan called Robusto?

2:31 PM
and his side kick Reg

@guest They left.
@KitZ.Fox You could put Hangouts on it, so that they can message you or each other using the wifi.
So did you just update to 2.2 or did you go full bore and upgrade to CM?

Oh Really? Thanks for the info @Mr.ShinyandNew安宇
Too bad, I was all ready to talk some trash with them after that game ;-)

Can't help you, I don't watch baseball.

np

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That's a great idea.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 haha you funneh.
@guest You mean how the Broncos bought the refs?

2:38 PM
Excuse me?

@KitZ.Fox setup an arduino-raspberry pi interface to an xbox with stepper motors that connect to a Rubik's cube that is attached to a pile of lego with cameras that translate to a Minecraft simulator of a Turing machine that computes pi to arbitrary digits where a substring of digits encodes the IM.

@guest Was that the trash you were going to talk?

@KitZ.Fox Or it's a terrible idea. But I guess it depends on your feelings about kids owning cell phones. ;p

@KitZ.Fox whoever wins...they're damned cheaters.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I was thinking about figuring out VoIP.

@Mitch I'm just kidding anyway. It was a great game. Very exciting to watch.

@Mitch Don't over-complicate things. Just spell the message out using 1x1 lego bricks like a dot matrix printer and then use image processing on the other end.

@KitZ.Fox I root for teams like a suburban mom... "I want X to win because they haven't won for a while, and the other team has won enough."

Booing manning was mean :(

@guest So who are you anyway? You're too new to know Reg and Rob and not be a sock, although if you knew Reg, you'd know he wasn't a fan of handegg.

2:41 PM
prolate spheroid

@Mitch You're not a Pats fan? For shame. I'm glad Manning has another chance at the Superbowl though.

@KitZ.Fox I have to be or I'd be shunned. (if it came out that I am a nonbeliever, then people would start burning things)

Ellipsoid actually.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 The most exciting feature for the eldest is that there is a flashlight! And it has a menu option to flash SOS in Morse code.

@KitZ.Fox lol.

2:43 PM
Morse code is not officially sanctioned anymore.

If my kids had phones, they'd A) want games installed, and B) text each other poop emoji ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT and C) text my mom when they're not texting each other.

It's not prefix-free so I have mixed emotions

@Mitch Even as a fair weather fan, you have to recognize Brady's command of the field. He and Manning are an excellent matchup, the two best QBs in the league.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Communication!!

@Mitch Yeah, well, emoji are words, right? Oxford said so.

2:44 PM
Speaking of communication, I have a meeting. Gotta bounce. L8r.

@KitZ.Fox I heard "blh blla h blha Brady blah ablha blha Manning blah blah have you called your mother blah blah blah"

You funneh.

Cya missy
;-)

@guest So are you SP?
You must be

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I know! Wait...Oxford Dictionaries not OED. Not the same people. It's just pandering to ... to... to entertainment.

2:46 PM
@Mitch Well, it's the same org, right? Just different departments

I haven't been able to confirm one way or the other.
I feel like they have the same database of words and definitions to start from, but different editing staff.
Mr S is sneaky.

"For your next mission, should you choose to accept it..." "Thanks, but no, I just want a vacation this episode"
Yeah, what's up with the frequent message deleting? Do you regret the things you say so often?
regrets the many times failed to regret

2:54 PM
Life is too short to live with regret.

@guest why a puppet? Seems like annoying effort to go through with no return.

I'm trying to kick the habit @Mitch

Which habit? Sock puppeting?
Or your nun career? Ha ha ha ... dad joke.

@Mitch speaking of dad jokes. Have you seen the twitter account @dadjokehansolo ? Spoilers for SW:TFA, but it's hilarious.

Hello everyone!
Is there a simple and common term to describe dice that are not fair? I am looking for the antonym of fair in this specific context, if it exists (and I don't mean "unfair").
In my own language it would be "leaded dice", literally translated. It means that they used (heavy) lead to create an uneven weight distribution and cheat in the game. I don't know if such an expression exists in English.
Should have searched more. The answer is loaded dice.

@Szabolcs yes...'loaded'
A more technical term might be 'biased'

Q: Abbreviation of "Street"

JasperI know that Street is abbreviated as St. But does the t in St represent the first t or the last t in Street?

8:32 PM
In accordance with Avenue, I believe the first T.

In accordance with Road, I believe it's the last t.

In accordance with Lane, I believe it's the middle T

Hah.
Generally, the dot indicates that something is left out at the end, not only in the middle.
But I think some countries/regions use the dot differently.

8:53 PM
There isn't always a dot.
And sometimes there is a dot where middle letters are left out:

Not when you leave things out in the middle.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I think that Rd. is non-standard?

Or maybe it's American.

@Cerberus Weird text speak for please

Ahh.
Fascinating.

That's Toronto, and you can see that there are basically all kinds of signs, with dots, without, for all the abbreviations.

Are you sure that's Toronto and not Crazyland?

9:05 PM
pretty sure. I used to live not far from the "Shaw St." sign at bottom left.
well, walking distance, anyway

When I think about it, I lived on Shaw St...

Perhaps Shaw Saint is in Crazyland.
That would explain a lot about you...

Aw.
Thanks <3

Both of you.

@Cerberus It would explain it. It would also explain how Rob Ford got elected.

9:07 PM
See?
I miss the news about him.
That we would get.

user174558
My question has 3 downvotes, LOL.

well, now there's trump. He's the Rob Ford of US politics.
@Jasper And at least two close votes. Sorry, but I don't think it's on topic.

user174558
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Does Av stand for Avenue?

user174558
I will make an edit to give the downvoters a chance to redeem themselves...

9:11 PM
So here we have Ave as a short-form for Avenue. I'm sure more variants are possible.
I never really noticed before how random the street signs are. It makes me a bit twitchy.

Q: Abbreviation of "Street"

JasperI know that Street is abbreviated as St. But does the t in St represent the first t or the last t in Street? Drive is abbreviated as Dr, which means it could be the first t, but Road is abbreviated as Rd, which means it could be the last t, if we were following the same pattern.

It could also be both Ts at once.

I just watched 1313: Cougar Cult. Half the movie was filming hot men in the shower, LOL.

@Jasper Is it some kind of soft-core porno for women?

user174558
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Maybe. But there is no formal nudity in it.

Why a sweet potato?

9:31 PM
@Cerberus because he's orange

Is he?

Is his skin so orangey?

It's pretty orange

But anyone's skin can be orange in odd lighting.
XCOM for €1.
And Pirates.

9:37 PM
@Cerberus Nah, he's way more orange than most people.
I guess he tans a lot?

Okay.
Tan spray?

user174558
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Maybe he eats many oranges. Maybe he is a Mandarin orange.

@Cerberus I dunno. I suspect tanning bed. But who knows.
