@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I can't make this thing work. I don't want to brick it by accident, but I also can't seem to get it to mount so that I can install something useful on it.

1:06 AM
So I need an SD card to mount it. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by that. But I can't get the sync manager to recognize it.

1:46 AM
So...CyanogenMod maybe?

2:12 AM
I guess maybe the device is too old. I can't find any way to make it work.

2:24 AM
@Mitch Or, perhaps, they could just ignore whatever I do with my body!

2:42 AM
@Cerberus Now you're just making everyone curious. How do you contort your body like that?

I want to tell someone "please be online" or "please get online". how should I say him?
"get online" is correct?
(He is offline now)

12:55 PM
@Shafizadeh If you mention a time at which he should be online in the future, then please be online at 18.00 is perfect.
I you don't mention a time, that means you want him to go online immediately? Then please get online will work.
Or come online, go online.

1:37 PM
Hi all
I've got a short question: I'm trying to find a more elegant way of expressing the following. "[Complicated object]'s are mapped to [complicated object]'s"
I'm typing up some notes, and the lecturer uses "[Complicated object]'s are mapped to such."
But I don't feel certain that this is correct, grammatically.
Any guidance?

1:54 PM
@KitZ.Fox I need more details, such as, what kind of phone, and what you're trying to do that might brick it.
@Danu Grammatically, it should be [Complicated objects] not [Complicated object]'s

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Sure, but I'm sure you understand that that's not the point of my question.
Replace [...]'s by "Homotopies of paths relative to their endpoints"

@Danu Does the lecturer mean that the objects are mapped to themselves?
The way the lecturer said it sounds a little weird but works just fine. I wouldn't take it as a pattern to emulate, in math or elsewhere, because there are other ways of saying it. YOu don't want to repeat the entire long sequence of aulifiers that define the set of objects, because the second time around, you're looking to see if it is different from the first time. That's why the lecturer uses 'such' which can (rarely) act like a pronoun.

@Mitch No, to objects of the exact same type.
Homotopies of paths relative to their endpoints are lifted to homotopies of paths relative to their endpoints.

but you should say 'the set of X maps to itself' or automorphism or something like that.

@Mitch So you're saying it's correct?
@Mitch See above; this is not the case.

2:07 PM
I'm saying it's weird, but doesn't sound like a foreignism. I'm not going to go so far as to say it is incorrect.

In case you know some algebraic topology, this is about how homotopies lift (to covering spaces).

@Danu but it sounds like the case to me from what you've described
"so the set A of homotopies of .... bah blah blah ... endpoints are lifted to A"

@Mitch No, it's mapping homotopies between maps into $X$ to homotopies between maps into $E$.
@Mitch No.

?? how is that different?
forget the long description.
you're not asking about the long description.

@Cerberus Ah I see. thanks

2:10 PM
Never mind. The objects are not the same, please just take that on good faith :)

you're asking about how to say "A are mapped to A"

No.
I'm asking how to say $A$, which has property $B$, is mapped to $X$, which also has property $B$.

Then you didn't explain yourself.
"[Complicated object]'s are mapped to [complicated object]'s""

@Mitch Sure, I'll give you that much ;)
I'm sorry about that.
I was trying to simplify things too much.

@Danu OK Good...it looks like you came up with a better way.

2:12 PM
@Mitch This is not what I'm looking for, but I guess I'll just stick with the way the lecturer put it.

also, that is a subtler situation. and you want to make it obvious about the subtle situation.
@Danu Is this accurate? Then define your sets A and X by properties.
and both sets happen to have the same property B
If the properties are complicated then set up the descriptions in stages (that's what a proof does).
Are you working from a recording? And do you want to preserve how the lecturer says it? Then use the words the lecturer uses.

2:28 PM
@Danu Is the point that you don't like the use of "such" as a pronoun? As a stand-alone sentence, I feel it is unacceptable, because I don't know what "such" refers to, but otherwise, grammatically, it's acceptable.

@Mitch No and no.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Thanks.
@Mitch Please don't try to modify the mathematical content; I'm not looking to change that ;) Your whole confusion just arises because I'm not providing you the 3+ pages of preparation for this statement.
(but thanks for your concern!!)

@Danu It's difficult to make the sentence more comprehensible if we don't know what the sentence is supposed to mean.

@Danu replace the complicated objects by simple single variables. That's how you make it understandable. trying one big monolithic statement may be taxing. good proving is good teaching.

@Mitch It's not a big monolithic statement in the context of these notes.
What I mean to say is: The content and clarity of the sentence is not what I'm asking about. I was just interested in the grammatical correctness.
Everybody seems to agree that it's just fine, so there is no problem.

Well, 'just fine' is a little strong, it sounds weird. Also, it may mean something different from intended: 'mapped to such' makes it sound like a map to itself.

2:42 PM
I am 100% sure it is a dupe, but I don't bother. Lack of research. english.stackexchange.com/questions/302134/…

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 So after many hours of trying anyway, this is what I figured out: It's a US Cellular HTC Desire (cdma), which is why nothing will work on it. I also finally managed to locate the name of the file that I could use to upgrade to Android 2.2, but the link is dead.
So I might contact HTC and ask them for the file, or I might not bother. We hooked the boys' iPads up to our new Sonos speaker, and that's been pretty exciting for them. They have their own Pandora accounts now too.

@KitZ.Fox Ah. What do you intend to use it for? Because a phone that old is pretty limited now.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Camera and music player.

@KitZ.Fox Can it not do that already?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I can't figure out how to install a new music player on it. I could use the integrated one, but it's not very good.
And it would be nice if I could put the Sonos controller on it, but that might not be possible anyway.

2:50 PM
@KitZ.Fox yeah, it might be too old to use the app store anymore

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It doesn't have the app store. That was introduced with 2.2.
Hence the need to upgrade it.

I am pretty cavalier with old devices like that so I'd just try to upgrade it to CM but there is a risk of bricking.
CM will get you gingerbread (2.3)

The other one (my husband and I had matchign phones back then) has 2.2 but it's not recognizing the network. I would do a factory reset, but then I think I lose 2.2.

no, I don't think you will lose the OS updates
it's not that kind of factory reset
well
at least on any phones I've used factory resets didn't wipe out OS updates

Maybe I will try that. It seems there isn't a Gingerbread mod for the cdma phones.

2:52 PM
I haven't tried it on an old HTC
There is
at least, I think that's it

Oh right. I looked at that and downloaded it last night.
I can't remember why I couldn't root it. No SD card, I think.

yeah an SD card is critical. AND you'll probably find that the thing still runs out of internal storage
because lots of things can't run from the SD card.

Right, which is one reason to root it iirc.
Because then you can change some of that.

yeah... sorta.

Oh that's right. I can't do Gingerbred until Froyo is installed.

2:54 PM
but re: cdma/non-cdma mods: if you don't plan to use the phone as a cell phone, you don't need a cdma mod. I am 90% sure that a non-CDMA mod will boot, but the phone hardware won't work.

Good to know. I would prefer to shut off the phone hardware entirely.
I just want a small touch-mobile device for the boys to play with.
Oh right and I can't get the Revolutionary thing that I need.
I was up for hours trying to figure things out. It was pretty annoying.

yeah there is a window of time when the modding community and the hardware vendors support a phone and I think your phone might be past its due date.
You could try the XDA forums, maybe someone there has links that still work.

I looked around there. I found several that were promising, but none that panned out.
But today, I am trying to stay away from the rabbit holes.

That must be tough, for a fox

They smell so good.

3:07 PM
Mmmmm, the head scent of rabbit poop and rabbit sweat

redolent
was a word I thought of just now.

:D
Do you think CMs ever say "I don't always have an account at a Stack Exchange site, but when I do, it's a moderator account"?

I'm sure no CyanogenMod has ever said that.

You know, ever since Reg left, the star board has hardly any new stars.

I'll never understand those guys
I guess that means the people that left with him were starring everything. or that we're just not as interesting without him
by with I really mean "at or around the same time"
i think it's nice to have a relatively calm star board

There's less conversation now too. It tends to be more topical.

I had a dream that Reg came back to the chat room and we were talking about Lego.

who's to know what's important if it's always changing?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 awwww

@MattE.Эллен Everything is important here.

I had a dream about an owl standing on my head. That's almost the same thing.

hmmmm
I guess her success was limited to the more eastern hemisphere

crl
la la la, lalala la la

@MattE.Эллен or the US.
@crl but nice!
I first heard of her when she had a super guest appearance on the Vicar of Dibley. That's how unknown she is in the US.

@Mitch That's when I heard of her! "A little lippy for the Vicar?"
And then she was a guest on Doctor Who for the Christmas episode or something.

Wasn't David Bowie on there too?

3:41 PM
She's in the titanic episode of Dr. Who?

@MattE.Эллен That's right.

I don't remember her in the Vicar of Dibley, but I don't recall that show very much
The only episode that sticks in my mind is the Reg Dwight one, because that's where I learnt that Elton John is a stage name.

That's the one where Reg Dwight showed up to play at their festival or something.
Right.
Pretty sure she shows up because of being friends with him.

Of course, I saw it back when I was dating the big ex, which was a considerable long time ago. I might be misremembering.

3:45 PM
It's really bizarre how the US media pays so little attention to the UK media. I get it (but it's annoying) that they don't care about continental Europe or anywhere else. But UK? It's like free copy already written in English.
Because I see UK media copying US media so wholesale that I wonder if I'm reading US stuff.
goes to read the Indonesian tabloids

Hello @MattE.Эллен @KitZ.Fox!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 for perspective, it takes many viewings to get that 'Trailer Park Boys' are Canadian.
@MattE.Эллен I just remembered that we established (by reading somewhere) that VoD is supposedly set near you.
So can you introduce us to Kylie Minogue?
Or MIA. If we get one wish, I want it to be MIA.

@Mitch for the right price
@Mitch The Sri Lankan singer?

@MattE.Эллен as silly as that whole show is, the acting has to be top notch because all those people seem to be non-actors. Like they playing themselves. Like they really are total idiots.
@MattE.Эллен Yes!

3:55 PM
singer isn't quite right

@MattE.Эллен omg, are you mental? You sounds like my cranky 90 year old uncle.

@Mitch hmmm. That'd be harder. I think she's a Tamil refugee and my Sri Lankan relations are Sinhalese...
@Mitch no, I mean I'm sure she does more than sing

@MattE.Эллен I'll let you work out the details, thanks.
If you came here I could introduce you to somebody

somebody I want to be introduced to?

Oh. uh...
thinking...

3:58 PM
I mean, I already know myself.

That's a good step on the way to self-actualization. Does Kylie know that? That would help a lot.
Ask me if I know anybody in particular here.
No not that one. Pick someone else.
Yeah. that one. ask me about that one.

Kylie doesn't know myself

the VoD episode only just got to the Reg Dwight reference. I had no idea.

Hi @Mitch How is the weather (snow) where you are? I heard east coast area got lots of snow this year.

@Mitch do you know that person who is over there?

4:11 PM
@Arrowfar The bad parts of the blizzard didn't reach this far north, so we barely got any.

user116848
Ah, cool.

user116848
And people where I live long for snow all winter, never get it :) Temperature never drops below 5 C here.

@MattE.Эллен No. Oh you mean that one? No, I don't know here either.

aw shucks

@Arrowfar where I grew up it was like that. We would get snow once a winter but barely a couple inches and it would melt by the next day.

@KitZ.Fox I'm glad to se you've survived the blizzard

@MattE.Эллен Oh..him I know.

@Arrowfar It's not bad. Pretty nice, except it's very cold and breezy.
We haven't had snow in a while.
We've got maybe four inches on the ground.

I still don't get that reference. it's been years now

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I looked earlier. why do you ask?

It's basically non-famous people shouting.
all the time.

5:07 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 My dad had an interesting story
Someone in a restaurant stood on a table and ranted about how the world was going to end
Literally everyone ignored her

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 that's true.

Good flag: +rep

@DeltaEscher no.

Yes
It gives incentive to new users to make good flags

Even though I believe that is a silly question, I think it is interesting

And punishes people for bad ones

It is essentially writing advice

6:45 PM

Unfortunately it's all a bunch of no writers giving their advice.

It's a good idea.
Or at least punish bad flags

@DeltaEscher On paper. Lemme explain.

It's recorded, just isn't part of the rep count

So there's a badge for reviewing. Three badges. And what do we get? The second worst SO review problem is robo-approvers of edits.

It's in your profile somwwherr

But just a tiny amount of rep
Like +10

People already do very bad things for rep.

Bad is -25

That's not tiny. That's an answer upvote.

Then +1 to +5, depending on how many people flag it
More flags: Less rep

6:47 PM
More accepted flags more rep

I don't mean punish flags made in goodwill

On the other end of the spectrum, there are frequent flaggers who also tend to get declined flags every now and then. Let's not discourage their flagging.

Punish flags that are obviously made for free rep

@DeltaEscher How do you define good will?

Flagging something accidentally that looks off topic, but isn't.
That's happened to me before.

6:48 PM
There are always gray areas in something subjective like that, and a black border will be arbitrary and stand out.
BTW the idea of having "moderation rep" has been proposed before.

Successful flag counter on profiles, then?

That would make me the most "reputed" person on Chem.

Is there a badge for flagging?

Yep. Three.

Nice.
Then I retract.

6:49 PM
But it's not naturally something people would robo-ly do.

Flag counter is still good idea though.

@DeltaEscher Bad flaggers get a flag ban.

Alrighty
I want a successful flag counter ;-;

There used to be flag weight. Now it's gone.
