I mean, his love for her could have been part of the story, but a writer shouldn't take on more than he can handle.
The real problem is that GL surrounded himself with sycophants.
Well, that's one problem. Another is that the prequels feature mainly inexplicable space battles, along with long periods of people sitting around talking, or walking down hallways, talking.
user174558
What if the sequels are as bad as the prequels?
I doubt it.
It's hard to be as bad.
JJ Abrams may not be the best thing ever, but even if he phoned it in he'd still make a better movie.
user174558
I think there should be at most 3 movies in a series, not 9 or even 6.
user174558
4 is just too many. Time for something new.
15:05
I dunno. A story takes however long it takes. Look at the Harry Potter stories. 7 books, 8 movies.
user174558
Remember we said we could make the drama in this room into a movie. Hahax.
I think that'd be a boring movie
user174558
Yeah, half of it would be me deleting accounts.
user174558
I think I am going to watch all the movies with 'seduction' in the title.
user174558
15:13
Every Xmas, I would watch The Polar Express.
Oh, I didn't like that movie much.
user174558
I like movies with 'believe', lol.
The animation in that movie is too much in the uncanny valley for me. It looks like everyone is blind.
Have you seen "Elf"?
user174558
no
I'm not a Will Farrell fan but I really liked that movie. It's cute and whimsical and hilarious.
user174558
15:15
I don't like Jim Carrey movies.
well, he's not in it, so you'll be fine. I recommend Elf.
user174558
Hi @DeltaEscher, new picture?
Yah
I'm sticking with this one, finally
probably
Don't make promises you won't keep ;)
That's why no one I know promises
They know they're going to break it :3
user174558
15:17
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 "I will keep my account for life" sounds familiar.
@KitZ.Fox OK, finally have the screen to read for real. I don't see anywhere in that article about company policy. I see the conjecture (that you noted) about something bague about soldiers posing with jars of Nutella, but I interpret the sentence to mean that there might be some fear by somebody of that somewhere. It's fast thinking by everybody (the writer) leading other people to do fast thinking.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I promise to press return at the end of this sentence.
Woo hoo! Done!!
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I don't see that in the linked article.
@Mitch "Instead, Ferrero offered to print any nickname Isis goes by instead — as long as it wasn’t on their list of banned words."
@KitZ.Fox It could happen.
In George Lucas's strange fantasy life.
@Mitch "Rebanks called the company and asked to speak to someone "high up." She says she spoke with Tony Selina, who seemed, to her, apologetic, and he insisted there were several words that couldn’t be printed on the company’s products."
@KitZ.Fox world view turns over
15:33
I'm very slightly miffed that Mr. Shiny has his monkey and I haven't gotten mine yet.

@JasperLoy James Bond? That's an increasing sequence of integers.

You just do it.
I mean on the chat

@DeltaEscher Oh.
You get its URL
and the way to do that is...
you get the permalink, or right click and say 'copy link address' and than paste what you copied.

thanks
I thought it was more complicated
try it on any link, here from chat, from a question, answer or comment

A: What is the best way to light a hard-to-reach candle wick without burning your finger?

Delta EscherA firework punk can be used for this, as it is a long thin strip that could reach into a candle holder with ease.

some web URLs will work too, wikipedia,
I did it!
+1 ingenuity
@DeltaEscher exactly! woo hoo!
+1 for using the mouse.
15:41
Also, I should have gotten at least one upvote for meh answer ;-;
I want my Copernicus
Is good hat
which answer? Oh, in the URL you just gave?
EDit your answer minimally to bump the question, then hopefully people will go to the bottom of the answers, see how ingenious yours is, and upvote it.
By the way, what is firework punk?
I've never heard of that?
We use them all the time on Fourth of July
It's like a really long thin stick that burns good
Edit your question to include the alt-text. For accessibility purposes.
15:45
A punk is a smoldering stick used for lighting firework fuses. It is safer than a match or a lighter because it can be used from a greater distance and does not use an open flame. They are made of bamboo and a brown coating of dried manure or compressed sawdust. Punks often resemble sticks of incense, and in some countries actual incense sticks are used in a similar fashion. Punks are sold at nearly all firework stands and many stands will include them for free with a purchase. == See also == Black match Slow match Fireworks Pyrotechnics Tinder...
@KitZ.Fox Alt... Text?
OK, maybe I can do it. It's the description of the image which shows when you hover over the picture or when a screen reader finds it.
Oh.
I'm still relatively new to this
I usually just hang out around the Overlook
Oh, I can't. It has alt-text already anyway.
@DeltaEscher I've heard of punk as a handwarmer, probably the same stuff. And I've heard of punk as a musical genre and as a catamite. This needs a question on ELU.
I've heard of punk as no good dagnabbit kid
15:49
and there's that

don't you have a belt?

@Mitch Punk is above fluff and tinder and below kindling.
oh they took them and your shoelaces away when they put you in the can overnight for litterin?
@KitZ.Fox it seems like tinder that is glowing
er.. has a tip that is an ember
or a really bad torch
a poop stick
isn't that a children's game?
Poohsticks is a sport first mentioned in The House at Pooh Corner, a Winnie-the-Pooh book by A. A. Milne. It is a simple sport which may be played on any bridge over running water; each player drops a stick on the upstream side of a bridge and the one whose stick first appears on the downstream side is the winner. The annual World Poohsticks Championships have been held at Day's Lock on the River Thames in the UK since 1984. == History == Poohsticks was invented by English author A. A. Milne for his son Christopher Robin Milne. The sport first came to prominence when it was described in the author...
such an unfortunate choice of a name
I can't believe I didn't think of that until just now.
re nutella-ISIS - there's just something so obvious about how stupid this is but I don't know how to articulate it. also there's the meta cultural value of the sales lady says 'no I can't do that I have to ask my boss' but if this were france the lady would just do it, if it were Germany, the lady would say no without needing the boss, if it were Russia you'd just pay double to get it.
so there are cultural metarules.
Right.
15:56
@KitZ.Fox it's polysemy in action. for kids.
looks like you don't need me again
Ohai @Matt!
@MattE.Эллен we need you but not in that way.
hi @KitZ.Fox :D
Who's ready for the very special Christmas edition of Tanya (In Space!)?
I'm not even ready to write it!
15:57
@Mitch oh. oh I see. I understand
Are you feeling better, @Matt?
@KitZ.Fox I'm sleeping better, but my nose and chest haven't recovered yet
@tchrist can you tell if this fellow is NortonnS?
@MattE.Эллен wow. once would be a coincidence, but 2 is a pattern
@MattE.Эллен Really? Good because I don't. Why don't we need you again?
@Mitch you found the tweet
16:15
Who wants to play a game?
Not 52-pickup. It took me a while, I just learned the strategy to that one.
No, an interactive game
I give everyone a prompt, and you say what to do next
It's like D&D, but with less Dungeons and Dragons
And less 2d20s
I'll invite everyone and tell them the gist
@MattE.Эллен Oh. Right. People almost wilfully misunderstand. But then some people (who are not stupid) don't get sarcasm either. They're not literal-minded, just ... serious? or take everything at face value? or something?
@MattE.Эллен @Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 @MετάEd @KitZ.Fox @JasperLoy Ley
@DeltaEscher and we split the profit? nice!
16:17
Let's play a game
I give a prompt
You say what to do next
Everyone who wants to participate, say ready when you are.
'ready when you are'?
Just 'ready'
When you are ready
I want at least three people other than me
Or else it's just banter
Been listening to the same song on loop for two days now
Just now getting sick of it
Ooh
Time to set the record for most time listened to Spooky Scary Skeletons on repeat
I've got to get some lunch, but then I will play for a bit.
16:48
@KitZ.Fox I did a whole bunch of exceedingly puerile experimental investigation into google translate. It is very good at translating back and forth lots of profanity. Works well for IE languages, but also the alternate character set ones, and non-IE langs. The hard part for a random mod would simply be choosing the right language to translate from. But then you just go down the list.
Also, surely, there's a google translate API that we could put in a smoke detector.
But then that's exactly the Nutella-ISIS case. This is why I call for tolerance (and intelligent oversight) rather than regex bots that people unquestioningly follow.
In other news, the review queue is down to ~20. Amazing.
lolwhut
Anonymous
17:10
@Mitch Of course, you can also say offensive things without profanity.
Anonymous
I think translating profanity can be really difficult because taboo language works differently in different languages.
Have I mentioned how much I really dislike Christmas?

@snailboat It keeps stretching out. And I don't like giving buckets of presents to my children. So I feel like I'm fighting culture a lot.
My school put up the Christmas tree almost immediately after Thanksgiving
@snailboat Yes, that is one of the problems with the regex matcher, too many false positives (what's wrong with Isis? absolutely nothing before a couple years ago), too many false negatives (being mean doesn't need profanity).
The problem is that people always want to feel festive
@KitZ.Fox Actually, no you haven't.
At least StackExchange got it right
17:39
@snailboat nice. I'm always worried that they'll remark on some of the dumber things.
@KitZ.Fox It'll stop immediately on Dec 26th when all the drugstores and shopping centers will put up their Valentines day decorations.
Because no one loves New Years
It's just a reminder of how little we did in the past year
@DeltaEscher I did a whole.. thinks .. I did some ... thinks more I effing survived this past year.
I just realized that I say "asteriks" when I pluralize "asterisk".
brain is melting
17:55
only the most deliberate speaker says 'aster isk'
the plural should kill people.
It's easier if you don't say the middle syllable. Astrisk. Astrisks.
Anyway... food. Back sometime.
normally -sks goes to geminate s. wasps -> wass, lasts -> lass, tasks -> tass
Anonymous
@Mitch I never acquired ɪks in asterisk, so ɪsk isn't a marker of careful speech for me.
Anonymous
In rapid speech I compress the schwa, though.
Anonymous
So for me, pronouncing it as three syllables marks it as careful pronunciation.
Anonymous
18:02
@KitZ.Fox It does, doesn't it? I don't really celebrate Christmas, but it seems to have expanded to even before Thanksgiving here.
Anonymous
Halloween is my least favorite because I feel conflicted about giving candy to children, which I think is a bad idea but is expected of me. I don't know what I'm supposed to do exactly.
I celebrate secular Christmas, which I am working on turning into celebrating solstice.
18:22
we we wish you a merry solstice
we we wish you a merry solstice
we we wish you a merry solstice
It's the same as new year
18:37
@snailboat I am really talented at generalizing my own singular experience to everybody else.
@MattE.Эллен :D
@KitZ.Fox I know! All the quarters should be celebrated. Mar 21 because hey spring is the best ever. Jun 21 I don't know why this one is so underrepresented because summer is the best and people who disagree are weird boring skiers., Sep twenty whatever, I guess because harvest/Yom Kippur/Oktoberfest and well I guess Dec 21, but why would you celebrate coldness and death and emptiness and so so cold?
@KitZ.Fox any more chat-faq posts to make?

Q: Chat: What is a Room Owner?

Mr. Shiny and New 安宇I've been a room owner of various chat rooms: chat rooms I created myself, and now, the ELU main chat. But what IS a room owner? What can a room owner do, what can't they do, what should they do? Also, how can a regular user find or identify room owners?

Anyone? Bueller?
@Mitch you celebrate the Dec solstice because you made it! half way out of the dark!
@MattE.Эллен 2 to three more months of when its really gonna snow. and get colder. The real dark hasn't even started. It's always darkest before it gets even darker.

@Mitch you'll be fine once the hypothermia wears off

frostbite is like frost kisses... of body parts you'll never use again
Protip: put close to frost bite parts in cold water first. You want to warm up slow and gradual.
I learned that from Call of the Wild or Wild Fang or something.
I can't tell if Pinker is a reputable guy or just good at self-promotion.
19:08
@KitZ.Fox You should celebrate Festivus instead
I'm sad that my "doubt" question didn't get more votes. I specifically asked it using the app to get a hat.
19:27
Does anyone remember Construx building toys? those were great.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I liked it.
@Mitch Yes. We still have chat memes, doing the flagging, and getting flagged. I'd like to wrap up with the memes one because it is happy and flagging one suck.
@Matt We need you for this one.
What else do we need to tell people about chat?
Hey, I just realized that I could possibly get a gold badge and therefore hat out of views on this question.
user174558
19:43
@KitZ.Fox Chat is a nice place.
I thought tag edits didn't bump questions.
Oh! This is an example of that thing, like with the elephant! english.stackexchange.com/questions/294515/…
A paraprosdokian (/pærəprɒsˈdoʊkiən/) is a figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence, phrase, or larger discourse is surprising or unexpected in a way that causes the reader or listener to reframe or reinterpret the first part. It is frequently used for humorous or dramatic effect, sometimes producing an anticlimax. For this reason, it is extremely popular among comedians and satirists. Some paraprosdokians not only change the meaning of an early phrase, but they also play on the double meaning of a particular word, creating a form of syllepsis. == EtymologyEdit == "Paraprosdokian...
Or maybe not.
user174558
Well, technically it could be one.
user174558
My deleted answer on the elephant question is still there.

@KitZ.Fox I think they do. Every time I go on a retagging spree on Japanese.SE, I see a pile of old questions at the top of the page!
user174558
19:50
The math folks get very angry about bumping. I don't care and just bump all I want.
user174558
They also don't like boxes to expand in chat, like youtube or wiki.
@KitZ.Fox so any details for the falgging ones beyond 'When should we flag stuff?" and "What do I do when I get flagged/suspended?"
@JasperLoy Really? What's their problem with it?
user174558
@Mitch They just think it is not important to edit unless absolutely necessary, impatient folks you know, easily irritable. I suspect these are poor mathematicians as well. Good ones should be more tolerant.
Or young people
user174558
It's a very different culture there.
user174558

user174558
@Mitch I just saw James's comment on monotonically, lol. Those folks don't get it do they?
user174558
@Mitch I think we should not comment on the sequence question anymore, we can ask them to come to chat if they want.
20:14
@MattE.Эллен It's possible but there's not enough data. I'll mention something else elsewhere.
MADONNA!
time to waste, I mean use up, my daily votes. if I want to use the maximum, what's the required ratio for Q and As?
user174558
@anongoodnurse Hello medica.
anyone need any votes?
user174558
Nope. One should not try too hard to get hats, they are meant to be fun!
the fun is in trying!
user174558
20:19
For me, the fun is in getting them automagically.
20:33
wow, the review section shows all zeros for me
@Mitch flagging is for more than just offensive stuff. We'd like people to know about mod flags to signal for help with stuff.
hmm, would someone like to temporarily add the etymology tag to english.stackexchange.com/questions/294565/… so I can test something out?
20:50
@Hugo done
thanks! I'll revert the tag in a mo
@KitZ.Fox that's the explanation or spin on my question. But should I reword the question?
'more than just offensive stuff': but with the intent that flagging with validation suspends someone.
@JohnNash Who is John Nash? Oh it's you!!! John Nash!! I get it.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 ?? I got everything to zero but closes which is at 14.
and benjamin rain
@JohnNash I have a hard time drawing any inference from the numbers. It's three years old, so if it is interesting, then that explains the high visit #. I find that title just as boring as most titles. So Idon't get. I don't think it's a problem, just I don't get it.
must be a common problem for it to be googled so often
user174558
It is so elementary.
21:04
for us, perhaps
user174558
For everyone, actually.
Yes. everyone.
@Hugo or something about people searching for sell or sale somehow are given that page by google near the top of their hits.
21:35
The title is ungrammatical now. There should be the article, it's: "What is THE difference ...." Who approved this edit was just being lazy. — Mari-Lou A 10 mins ago
I rolled back the title to its original because it was more grammatical than it's "improvement" — Mari-Lou A 5 mins ago
What does she want, a hat?
I haven't looked.

I noticed the missing "the" as well.

Oh, it's OK, lol.
Seriously, how do I not have any hats yet?
user174558
21:38
Maybe you accidentally turned off hats.
user174558
I have 5 hats. I will give them to you.
I don't think I did. They were on last year, and I haven't done anything but check for hats.
And I tried last night to get the reopen hat.
user174558
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Maybe browse some posts, cast some votes, and things like that.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 The hats are slightly harder to get this year.
user174558
21:48
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But I have 5 for doing almost nothing, lol.
Some of them are date based. Some are app based. Several are self-answer based.
user174558
I must be very lucky then.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Did you post or vote today?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 no :(
vote 10 times using the app today, that's two hats
use the site's search feature 3 days in a row, that's a hat
edit a question in the reopen queue, that's a hat. close questions in the close queue, that's a hat. maybe two, if you're part of a team of dupe-hammering.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 post something on meta, pimp it out here in chat until 10 people vote, +5/-5, that's a hat
upvote my doubt question, that's a hat for me. hopefully, eventually :)
Three more votes here and you get a hat

Done. I'll send a batsignal. :)
I presume you flagged it.
@tchrist I did.

Jasper, behave.
@KitZ.Fox I think Matt's toddled off. If you're around, you might want to nip that one above before it gets uglier.
user174558
@MετάEd Why do you think he wrote that?

Indeed.
user174558
Why are you backing away slowly? LOL
@tchrist What's that? The comment there?
23:37
@KitZ.Fox You have a flag related to Ed's deleted comment.
Not on Ed's comment, of course. :)
It’s an Ed-flag.

I know, right.
Drunk perhaps.
But he's always been a get-off-my-lawn sort.
You don't think that's a she?
user174558
I am now reading the comments on the increasing sequence question. They are still ongoing, LOL.
@KitZ.Fox You know I'm not good at sexing.
23:40
I forget sometimes.
I assumed someone that belligerent must be a son of Ares and not just of Cain.
May I speak with you privately a moment?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I saw your comment on the increasing sequence question, no point engaging with him. He doesn't know the math very well.
Why am I still having to create .BAS files 39 years after I learned my first programming language?
@KitZ.Fox Did you find it?
@tchrist Sorry didn't mean to beckon your way.

I am just very surprised that deadrat speaks so authoritatively on that sequence question, lol. I think I should forget it and move on.
@MετάEd The thing from earlier? Yes. Thank you. Did you see the nice answer I left on your etiquette answer?
user174558
meta.english.stackexchange.com/questions/7453/… I also don't expect anyone would post an answer to this with his opinion.
user174558
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I actually commented to deadrat that he can come to chat and talk about it, but I don't think he is coming.
Can't believe that was re-opened.
user174558
@KitZ.Fox WTF! How?
23:53
Easily fixed. :)
Ed, shall we play That Game? :)
@KitZ.Fox I did. After reading it I now think I could make clearer that some of those etiquette points are more like commandments than suggestions. :-)
@tchrist Which game?
user174558
@KitZ.Fox Anyway, since it is reopened, I think I should delete my meta post then!
@MετάEd I found I liked it more than I thought I would. It's a nicely-worded "Grow up".
@JohnNash There's no need for that. Might as well leave the history.
I think @tchrist said he's not good at sexting.
user174558
Done. Deleted.
user174558
23:56
What game? Is @tchrist sexting @MετάEd?
@JohnNash That's what I think I heard.
Maybe the game is telephone!
user174558
There is a telephone tag, LOL.
No, so we can go close that question.
It's a bit naughty, but it's a lame question.
user174558
OIC, 5 people voted to reopen it @KitZ.Fox, hehe.
