@Mitch Second class lobsters, have we now?

@Robusto Which is funny because it turns out the red panda is really actually not a panda

And the sloth bear is neither.

Also a white horse is not a horse (where it all started)
@Robusto wha??
maybe they're just ... slow.

Not in my book, anyway.

8:12 PM
@Robusto I didn't know sloth bears could read
@Robusto wiki says they're bears, not that that means anything.

Anonymous
@Mitch They're cute, though!

Anonymous
They're called lesser pandas in Japanese

3 mins ago, by Robusto
Not in my book, anyway.
taps the sign

@Robusto You should get another book then.

8:18 PM
That's your solution for everything.

@snailboat the lesser of two kinds of panda

I recommend Infinite Jest or McTeague or V.

@Robusto Water is my solvent for everything
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 If I could have only one book on a desert island? A Hundred Years of Solitude? The Brothers Karamazov? Tristram Shandy? Nope, none of them. Encyclopedia Britannica.

The K Bros are nice.
And why not the Wikipaedia?
If you're stranded on a Waikiki-like island...

I have to play by some rules

8:23 PM
Since when?

@Cerberus If it's Waikiki, why bother reading!
@Cerberus There has to be some challenge.

@Mitch Your island will be like Waikiki, except that it's 100x100m and deserted.

@Cerberus Is there a printed version?

There is if you print it.
So ask yourself.

@Cerberus Nice. No traffic.

8:25 PM
None whatsoever, especially no boats.

@Cerberus I printed the internet once. It wasn't that good. And it was faint towards the end because the ink was running out.

How could that happen?

Before that I had prinetd off some pages that were all blank so it was already low.

Oh, such a waste.
I never seem to have enough blank cartridges.

It's a lot cheaper to print off pictures that are all white.

8:34 PM
There used to be a service where they would download parts of the internet onto a pile of CDROMs and ship it to you.

@Mitch Cheaper than blank?

@Mitch transparent gifs

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Such as when you want to export software that you're not allowed to?
Have you received your N5 yet?

@Cerberus No, like if you wanted to read a bunch of websites, but didn't have internet
This was late 90s
@Cerberus Yes, I bought it on Thurs

Anonymous
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Oh, I never heard of that, interesting

8:37 PM
It's significantly faster than the N4, I'm surprised
@snailboat It's a bit of a strange business model for the late 90s. Everyone who was in a position to care about reading websites typically had internet access, and the rest of the world was still wondering what the fuss was about.

@Cerberus Well, you still have to print something.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 and today there are still some tribes in the rain forest of deepest Amazon who wonder "Why would you want an Apple Watch when you get all that already on your phone on a bigger screen?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yay! Isn't that just because it doesn't have all your crap on it yet?

Anonymous
Can I wonder that over here, too?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 When do you notice the increase in speed?
@Mitch You jest, Sir!
@snailboat Snails don't like apple?
I thought you fed them apple?

@snailboat haha. I wonder it myself. I think watches are dumb.

8:47 PM
@Cerberus I have an iPhone! :-)

Anonymous
And a Mac.

@Cerberus No, first thing I did was tap one phone to the other and it restored everything.

@snailboat Oh, dear. I didn't know.

@Cerberus Whenever it's loading things. It seems either the storage or the cpu is much faster.

But I do kinda think it'd be nice to have a phone with a really big screen, but then it'd be a tablet, and that wouldn't fit in my pocket. Zeroth world problem

8:48 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Surely not everything...

@Cerberus All the apps, some of the settings.

And did you do a factory reset after updating Android on your N4 the last time?

Anonymous
@Cerberus I'm a software person, and I have different computers with different OSs for different stuff. I'm not exactly an Apple person

Anonymous
I have FreeBSD and Linux and Windows and OS X

@Mitch A 7-incher might fit in your pocket.

8:49 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Apple should steal that idea. But then microsoft would have the idea to steal the idea of stealing ideas. and then sell it as a recipe storage device.

@snailboat Better.

Anonymous
I got an iPhone because I wanted to make iPhone apps.

@Cerberus My most recent factory reset was in Dec when the Android 5.0 update didn't install properly because I was rooted

Anonymous
That might've been a silly decision in retrospect. :-)

Anonymous
But I do like my phone.

Anonymous
8:50 PM
I take lots of snail pictures with it.

Anonymous
I have a new baby snail! As yet unnamed

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Mmm so a normal Android update is actually a kind of dirt flash...

@Cerberus It's really tempting to respond to that but I won't.

You should factory-reset your N4 and then tap it against your N5 to restore everything, then compare them.
And make sure they have an equal amount of storage free.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That is possible.

@snailboat I don't think there should be any native apps, just browser apps that work on all the different browsers and all the different screen sizes. (or design for screen size, not platform)

8:52 PM
@Cerberus So your position is that my n4 is slower not because it's an older phone, but because in 4 months and with the same apps running it somehow got filled with crud?

Hmm is your screen only 4.95"?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I am saying the test is not fair, and it is possible that the dirt might make a difference.

That's what size a screen should be.

Anonymous
@Mitch There are good and bad aspects of that idea...

@Cerberus I did a factory reset in Dec in order to install the latest android
Then I installed a few apps and some account settings and stuff
Then my screen stopped working
Then I got a new phone, unlocked it and flashed to the latest android, then installed those same apps and accounts
and now Spiderman loads maybe 75% faster
for example

My new screen is 5.2", and yet the device is only 1.x mm wider than yours.
75%? That really is a lot.

8:56 PM
It's much faster.

Anonymous
The internet says my phone has a 100mm screen

Anonymous
Which it says is "four inches"

Anonymous
Is it common to measure screen sizes in inches in places that otherwise usually use metric?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Hmm it has the same internals as my phone, I see.
Only screen, camera, and battery are different.
And...buttons?
@snailboat Yes.

Anonymous
@Cerberus Do you find any other uses of non-metric measures invading your otherwise metric life?

8:59 PM
@snailboat Unfortunately. It screws things up, but the reason that it is tolerated is probably because diagonal measurements are rarely compared to other lengths.
@snailboat Hmm let me think.
Maybe some parts of electronic devices that I don't know enough about.
Like some camera sensor.
Things that you never need to compare with anything that isn't of the same kind.
I can't think of anything else...
Oh, there is one thing.
It is by far the biggest culprit, you can guess what it is...
And I don't mean calories.

Anonymous
Rundlets?

Haha no, what?

Anonymous
Monme?

Anonymous
@Cerberus A rundlet is one seventh of a butt.

Um.

I normally halve butts.
Oh, no no such silly things.

Anonymous
Sorry, I couldn't help myself :-)

All liquids are measured in litres. Okay, sometimes in glasses...
What I meant is those pesky minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years. Most inconvenient.

Anonymous
Oh!

Anonymous
That hadn't occurred to me

Anonymous
9:05 PM
Too bad we aren't all on Swatch Internet Time

@snailboat Sure, but despite my preference, it's what will eventually happen.

That's the only time when we have to really use a calculator for everyday problems involving simple calculations.

Anonymous
@Cerberus Dealing with time is unpleasant. Leap seconds, for example

@snailboat It's Beer o'clock?

Ah, if those were the only problem...

9:07 PM
@snailboat waiting. that's the worst part of time.

Anonymous
@Mitch I'm not sure when Beer o'clock is yet

Anonymous
It might never come

@snailboat In common parlance, I think it is five o'clock. with the next statement being "it's beer o'clock somewhere"

Anonymous
Oh, is it?

Anonymous
In Snailboat Standard Time, it has yet to roll around

9:10 PM
Well, in SST +3 (I'm guessing) the beer light just went on. So right now, somewhere in the world, somebody is raising a glass.

Anonymous
Ah, I see!

Anonymous
I drink water :-) Lots of water. Some tea, too

gotta run. cya

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 later dude
