1:00 PM
Between the coughing and talking and nose-blowing, it's a wonder the actors can be heard at all.

Nah, all those are drowned by candy wrappers.
If you don't give your audience enough candy beforehand, your own fault.

candid rappers have shorter songs

If you're from a really poor third-world country, like oh say the US, you can just give them some wrappers with no candy.

@RegDwigнt How's your blanket work now, eh?

@Mitch it works even better with holes. If there's any draft, it goes into one hole but then straight out of the other.

1:03 PM
What are your thoughts on computer science as a high school math or science requirement?

the ability to programme is essential for scientists
but computer science isn't the same as programming

That was my thought.

@RegDwigнt You see, juggalos, as cool and hip and with it and badass as they seem on the exterior, on the whole they still live at home but are still not appreciative of their moms. Also, they're born again in real life.

Computer science is really too high for stupid kids.
Programming could be real fun, though.

@KitFox You mean instead of? math or science or one in a series?

1:06 PM
@Mitch oh I did get the point alright. Those people are young. Ha-ha. Very funny. I just had, and still have, no idea who the heck those people are and why the heck I should give a damn.

@MattЭллен adding numbers is not mathematics, but if you're a mathematician and you can't add, something is wrong.

I read this statement, that there is a petition to make computer science count toward high school math or science graduation credits, and thought "yet another person who doesn't understand the discipline."

@Mitch but if you're a computer scientist and you can't programme, nothing is wrong
if you're a computer scientist and you can't understand bubble sort, then something is wrong

@RegDwigнt It was a thing a few years back. Just a funny name for themselves the fans of ICP. And so easy to pick on.

@RegDwigнt You don't need to give a damn.

1:08 PM
You should read the New York Times more often, then you'd know about these things.

@KitFox I don't say I have. All I'm saying is that's the first Onion article like that, is all.

I don't think that's all you're saying.

@MattЭллен Really? Yeah, I'd think something is terribly wrong. I don't expect mathematician's to be doing integrals all day long, but they better be able to do some, and have had it very early in their education.

Normally they write about shit even this person on the other end of the world can somehow relate to. But this here is like, "Martin and Jürgen from Garmisch had to be driven to a concert by their mom". So unless you know Martin and Jürgen, at best you go shrug and at worst you go dafuq I'm reading.
@KitFox I can say a lot more for 3000 dollars.

@Mitch I don't think you have a good analogy. Sure computer scientists can programme, but that's irelevant to whether or not a scientist can programme, which is what scientists need to do, and being able to write python doesn't require an understanding of computer science, just an understanding how to programme

1:11 PM
@RegDwigнt Well, Insane Clown Posse was a thing back in the 90s, so if you were immersed in US pop culture back then, you would have known who they were.
In general, I'm disliking how this group is approaching promoting STEM. Actually, I think I disagree with promoting STEM. They are looking at the situation in the wrong way.

@KitFox wait, but I was!
And come on, I don't have to tell you that.

Obviously not, if you haven't heard of ICP.
looks disapprovingly @Reg
I have to reboot. brb.

Hey as long as I can rap along with anything produced in the 90s, I don't care how disapprovingly you can look.

ಠ_ಠ

Also, the article didn't read like it was about the 90s. I thought it was a new boygroup.
> Aug 4, 1999
OIC. Well sorry, that doesn't count.
Good music was dead by then.
That's so not the 90s anymore.

1:15 PM
apart from all the good music

Oasis don't count. Oasis are rubbish. You can quote me on that.

Good music was dead before Mozart was born.

The best music is silence.

Obviously you've never listened to Geto Boys.

@RegDwigнt I was thinking of Radiohead, Far, Deftones, System of a Down, etc.

1:18 PM
I am really not going to change my email or SE account again, yay!

I have now emailed 36 people my email address.
Mostly recalled from memory.
This time I added them all to the contacts as well.
Then I don't need to remember anymore.

that's why humans invented digital storage

@MattЭллен not bad, who?, yeah, gah no.

I have also changed my password on all my online accounts, hopefully I don't have to change again.
My new password is ************.

1:22 PM
hunter1!

I wonder if all passwords are automatically starred out

LOL

@MattЭллен you don't have to wonder, for it is so.

oh! cools
My password is: ***********

Do you like A Perfect Circle or Burning Airlines?

1:23 PM
Very cool. In related news, yesterday I ******* a *********** in the *****.

You installed a printer in the cluster?

I'm not a huge fan of A Perfect Circle, although everyone tells me I should like them. I've not heard of Burning Airlines

That's three of my passwords all in one sentence. That's how I memorize them.
@KitFox yes, yesterday I ******* a *********** in the *****.

@MattЭллен Burning Airlines is not spectacular, but I like their lyrics. I haven't listened to them in ages though.

I have not changed my linux distro for 2 months, this is also a miracle.

1:25 PM
@KitFox I like to listen to stuff I haven't heard in ages. Like The Offsping or something. Brings back good memories :D

Oh yeah, The Offspring.
OK, ima put my head low and try to get psyched for this meeting.

good luck!

Get PSYCHED!

@MattЭллен that alone doesn't count, though. Everything from the 90s brings back good memories. Even the worst trash.

1:33 PM
I don't ever want to feel / like I did that day

@RegDwigнt plenty of songs from the 90s don't do that for me

You're too young for it.
;-)
Oh right. I was working.
hums

Heck, even the worst trash from the 80s brings back good memories.

well, I hadn't hit puberty in the 80s, so sure

@MattЭллен I am sorry to hear your childhood sucked!

1:36 PM
:D it's ok, I have counselling

Deanna Troy is from the 90s, too.
Troi, sorry.
Those futures and their spellings.

@RegDwigнt Martin and Jürgen act like skinheads but sie sind echt kleine Waschlappen. Also Garmisch, what a backwater.

My point. I'd even know Podunk, but Garmisch? puhlees.

I think you're just not trying.
So what are you saying about Troi? You have some thing against her?

I wish I had something against her.

1:43 PM
@Mitch I am saying she's a counselor.
And now I'm saying you're obviously not geek enough to know.

@MattЭллен The analogy is calculating is to math (and general math knowledge) as programming is to computer science (general computer science). What's the point of teaching general computer science without having some actual practical experience programming.
Sure, I'm all for a computer science curriculum in high school, but that curriculum better start with programming otherwise the rest won't come very easily.
@KitFox !!rimshot

Talk about overthinking. The kids are too dumb for science, but programming will be fun. That is all.
How are you going to teach P=NP to people who don't get Pythagoras?

I am annoyed by it because they talk like STEM is something magical that we need to get kids interested in and my opinion is that we should be teaching our kids science because it is the right way to think.
So not this touchy-feely get them interested in it. It should just be.
They don't get a choice.

@RegDwigнt I'm hurt by that assessment. I don't know what the general view on Troi is because I hardly watched that because... TNG was not up to standard of TOS, and anyting that was was a direct ripoff of TOS.

@Mitch oh. so I think we agree. except I'm not for requiring computer science

1:49 PM
@Mitch TOS had a standard? Other than the corset for Kirk, that is.

@KitFox Oh, sure, yes. But newsy reflection on things is not so thoughtful. They have to have a reason ("beat the Koreans at the game they stole from us", "return on investment", etc)

For the record: by now I've watched way more of TOS than of TNG.

@JohanLarsson Impressive. I didn't know you were that flexible.

@Mitch This is a non-profit group trying to increase STEM graduates in my state. They are trying to influence curricula.

Customers want things. Gah. BBL.

1:50 PM
@Cerberus what where?

You, jumping from your motorcycle onto that car.

@MattЭллен oh. OK. as to requiring, I don't know. From a practical matter, more kids will end up using programming (or other computer science) than chemistry or physics.
@RegDwigнt that's because there's more of it to love.

@Cerberus wasn't me

@KitFox Does medicine count as STEM?

@Mitch I don't think so. Maybe.
It's not really science, but you need science to do it.

1:52 PM
or is that just one of the expected outcomes of a STEM education, as much as a chip designer or petrochemical engineer?

@RegDwigнt So you are going to Ireland? I had no idea they were so absurd.
@JohanLarsson No need to be shy.

Absurd Irish? How dare you! They are Irrisch Irish!

They are both at the same time! It is a miracle!

Yuck! (spits out communion wafer)

Are you Irish?

1:57 PM
Only in spirit. Also a little flesh.
but not any one I know. at least not well.

@RegDwigнt Helen of Troi?

Any "one"?
@Robusto Of Sparta!

Spartai?

She was probably hotter than Troi, I'm sorry.

@Cerberus You homoioi.

2:05 PM
"Similar people"?

so unattractive, she causes people to flee to ships and run off
the hoi paTroi

@MattЭллен Well, now, let's be nice to Deanna.

@Cerberus Come on, you of all dogs should recognize homoioi. As opposed to perioikoi.

@Cerberus I was talking about Helen
the face that launched a thousand ships
why would you sail away from beauty?
unless they were sailing towards her

The Spartiates (Greek: Σπαρτιάται, "Spartans") or Homoioi (Greek: Ὅμοιοι, "those who are alike"; sing. homoios) were the males of Sparta known to the Spartans as "peers" or "men of equal status". From a young age, male Spartiates were trained for battle and put through gruelling challenges intended to craft them into fearless warriors. In battle, they had the reputation of being the best soldiers in Greece, and the strength of Sparta's hoplite forces let the city become the dominant state in Greece throughout much of the Classical period. No other city-state would dare to attack Sparta even though...
See, once again I have to ruin a joke by explaining it to @Cerberus.

2:12 PM
@Robusto Ahh yes, I knew there was something! How humiliating.
@MattЭллен They were, d'oh!

@Cerberus oh! well, that's OK then :D

Dogs ruin everything.

You shouldn't be talking to dogs who have just woken up!

Dogs should be awake at this hour!

By the way, I was reading a book where they used the relative pronoun "who" to refer to an animal.
An unnamed one.

2:15 PM
@KitFox hey. I was gone before seeing your message yesterday. I noticed you've cleaned up the comments with that user's posts, but he won't stop communicating with the other users who comment on his posts:

@Cerberus What's wrong with that?

I think it was like, "in the garden there was a dog who was barking all night", something like that. Most writers would not use who for nameless animals?

-3
A: Can "a person" be used as plural?

bobie'a person' is singular: "a person can develop his/ her talent". The general term is 'people': "people can develop their talent". 'a person' is used with the meaning of 'any person' when it is an antecedent in another (usually subordinate) clause. The use of their is also justified for pronouns ...

At least I don't see it often.

@Cerberus I would have used that in that construction.

2:16 PM
@KitFox ^

But in a children's story, the personification is understandable.

I wood of ust what

Or it might have been a translation.
@MattЭллен Wut?

exactly
In vuh gardun ver wuz a dog wot woz barkin aw nigh

Since many people (still) object to this use of they, you might want to avoid it if you want to play it safe. However, considering the genre you are writing in, this should probably not concern you; more people will probably object to uniqueness. — Cerberus 8 secs ago

2:20 PM
uniquitude is the better word

@Robusto It is neither. It is a Roman detective story, by Lindsey Davis.
@MattЭллен Unity will do if needed.

I don't think that would work for uniqueness

@tchrist I'm not sure either. Perhaps because there is water in the ground near the lines, and the expanding ice breaks the lines?
@MattЭллен Nothing would work for that word!
Not even a dog would take the job.

rarity
is what it wants to convey

That is better, but...
I don't think that's what the writer wants to convey.

2:24 PM
common -> uncommon -> rare -> mythic rare

He wants to convey some vague sense of his being a "special person", barf.

seems like he wants to be thought a rarity

Oooh we were discussing secret stuff!
Noöne must know!

ooo
we'll never tell

Indeed not.
Can't you alter the records, so that not even mods or room owners may see it?

2:28 PM
I could alter it so that room owners can't see it...

Haha yay!

unless they own the bin

Own the bin?
Oh, is that a room?

Wait but...
We want Robusto to see that something was deleted!
We just want him to be curious and unable to see what.

2:30 PM
well then that message should raise his curiosty

I am curious.

Oh yay!
That is true.

It seems that X and Y are still not talking to each other, lol.
What can we do about it?

Not get involved.

Maybe we should not do anything and just let nature take its course.

2:35 PM
Yes.
Lol.

So George got unsuspended and then resuspended.

Really?
Too bad.

What did he say this time?

he was insulting
the messages have been deleted

2:40 PM
Maybe he needs some meds.

maybe
maybe he's just uppity

Yeah he did say something insulting to Skully.

I have never flagged anything in SE chat.

but it's been dealt with now, so no need to dwell on it
@JasperLoy I don't think I have either

I think I got suspended 5 times or so.

2:43 PM
I've been suspended once

I am more daring than you.

I am thinking of changing my reading list for next year. There is still time.

there's always time for reading

I mean there is still time to change.

2:45 PM
I know

I must think carefully so that I don't get the wrong books from amazon and waste more money.
Anyway, I hope to study about 8 hours a day next year.

Hello everyone

@RutvikSutaria Welcome to this chat.

@MattЭллен You, really?
What did you do?

He said "fucking is something people do", lol.

2:48 PM
that's right. I remember now

Haha he got suspended for that?

@jasper loy, you are saying that you are hoping to study about 8 hours a day so you are in which grade?

Religious people should not be allowed in chat...for their own good.

some sensitive people must be been browsing at the time

@RutvikSutaria I finished undergrad. I am trying to prepare to take some exam to enter grad school.

2:50 PM
Ok.

@Cerberus careful! you'll be flagged!
have you ever been suspended, @Cerb?

He said "iPhones are gay".

Is there a difference between being suspended and being banned from chat for, say, an hour?
I am not up to date on the terminology.
But I was at least banned from chat for an hour over the gay Iphones.

@Cerberus It's just different periods of suspension, lol. That's what I mean, same as ban.

@Cerberus they're the same

2:52 PM
And another time over the goatfuckers (which was even only a quotation, but anyway).
Ah OK.

I seem to recall what others got banned for, lol.

So George can still answer questions on the main site?

Yes he can.

OK.
So you can still answer questions even when your reputation has been set to 1?

No, that is suspension from main site, not chat.

2:53 PM
@cerb, why would you think that iPhones are gay?

I can see what everyone's been suspended for (except for Jasper's previous accounts)!

@RutvikSutaria It was a bit of a joke, you had to have been there.

@Cerberus no. we're only talking about chat suspension

Have you been suspended Matt?

But I think they are bad, Iphones.

2:54 PM
@JohanLarsson From chat, yes.

@MattЭллен Oh, OK.

@JohanLarsson from chat? yes

Jinx.

I thought George had been suspended from both the main site and chat?

2:54 PM
@MattЭллен that surprises me

@Cerberus Really?

Can one be banned from the main site while not being banned from chat?

@Cerberus I am not sure, but I think so.

@Cerberus I am quite obviously not going.

2:55 PM
@Cerberus yes
@Cerberus only chat

Even you don't have my balance sheet. Why should I give it to an unspecified leprechaun?

I see that the plagiarism case announced a day or two ago has not led to a suspension, lol.

@JohanLarsson I said something someone took offense to. I don't know who flagged me or who validated it.
not the worst thing that ever happened

They can go read their own balance sheets. And going by the recent bankruptcy, perhaps they friggin should.

@RegDwigнt I absolutely agree. The Anglo-Saxon governments are going nuts.

2:57 PM
@MattЭллен I suspect it was Martha, but that is just a guess.

@MattЭллен It takes a bunch of people validating no?

@JohanLarsson Yes.

@RegDwigнt Are they extra impossible towards Russians, or is that to anyone outside the EU?

@JohanLarsson oh, possibly. probably only one vote for a mod

@MattЭллен Hmm OK. And the main sites entails 1 rep?

2:58 PM
@Cerberus yes

OK.

@Cerberus they are actually extra nice to Russians. The Visa Waiver Programme is specifically limited to Russians and Kazakhs and half a dozen other rogue rebels.

I announce that my avatar, desktop and outlook theme is all set to "blue".

Huh?
Why?
