Oh, officially, there are strict rules.

But some Thai vowels will be mapped to the same English vowel.

And we don't transcribe our tones.

So it can be confusing sometimes.

And, when it comes to people names. Everyone does whatever he or she likes. :)

This is one of the problems with stripping diacritics.

When it is built into your written language already, to lose that is troubling.

Spanish has lots of minimal-triples of three-syllable words where the only distinction is which of the three syllables receives the stress. If you strip out stress markings, it can become confusing, since you just erased the distinction between 1st-person singular present tense and 3rd-person singular past tense. Read that wrong and it becomes weird.

Ah, I guess I kinda understand.

It’s the closest analogue I can think of to what you must experience.

The feeling must be close enough.

For example, termino means “I finish”, while terminó means “He/she/it/you-formal finished”, while término is not a verb but a noun meaning a term.

The unmarked one has stress on the 2nd syllable. Wipe away markings and it can sometimes become a muddle.

There are also lots of minimal pairs between n and ñ, so if you lose that, it can read really amusingly.

Sometimes I think the Spanish-speaking people get their exercise just talking. They profoundly emphasize nearly everything.

It’s just called “Beef Salad – With Lime Juice, Mint, Thai Chilies, Tomato & Cucumber” there. On the other hand, Larb is two lines up from that.
