@RegDwigнt I managed to get Chuck's hat even before asking how to do it :)

Exactly 300 behind Web Apps.
@Artemix hey cool!
You still don't have any hats from ELU, though.
Perhaps you need to synchronize your accounts or something.
I am really at a loss right now.
Also, I am really wasted right now.
So I shouldn't really be posting.

@RegDwigнt Yeah, I edited that meta post without being logged in.

@Artemix ah. A bummer.
Anyway.
Don't drink and chat!
I'll be back lator. Latre. Latoer.

Ste
@RegDwigнt - Still no "Before it was cool" hat...

5:11 PM
Morning!
I have someone trying to defend using "geriatric" to mean the opposite of "curing old people".
"If people use it that way, it can't be wrong."

Ste
Morning @Cerberus. Hmmm...

Hmm indeed!

Ste
I say morning, it is 17:12 here.

18:12 here.

Ste
So it was an ironic good morning...

5:13 PM
Yeah, how can it be good when I am forced into the defensive against illiterate language!
sighs and grumbles
How are your hats coming along?
You wish you had more heads to display them, eh?

Ste
I have 35, as does @RegDwigнt. #1 has 39.
Some moron on SO answered my tumbleweed question which riled me no end.

So you needed in unanswered in order to get your hat?

Can anyone help me with my question, please? chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/12777223#12777223

Ste
Unanswered, un-commented, low views.

You should have made sure the question was absolutely chock full with obscure technical terms and have a very off-putting title...

Ste
5:19 PM
I did tag it with visual sourcesafe 6

@M.Jarocki "A name for prank/fake/joke packages".

Ste
I need to try again with something really vague.

Sounds obscure to me...but what do I know?
You could ask about a boring little fact that you can only know if you happen to use a certain language/product?

Ste
It was a low-rep user who answered to, and practically link-only!

@JasperLoy Yes it does look crazy here, i've popped in from time to tome and never seemed to understand anything of what's going on

5:20 PM
Such as, "do the comments count towards the word count in [obscure IDE]?"
@Laure Bonjour!

Ste
Yeah that sounds like the way forward. Or I could post something in our meta saying "don't look, don't vote, don't comment, "don't answer". But you just know everyone will be all over that.,,

and seems you're all hat hunting these days, hatomiac, would that be a word ?

Notre chambre est comme ça, incomprehensible.

@Laure At least you learnt to click on the arrow to reply, many people dunno how to do that. Well, the conversation is pretty random

@Laure -maniac?
But not I.

5:22 PM
@Cerberus Do packages mean "real packages" here? Or packages in computing?

@Ste Yeah that's not going to work...

Ste
Hataholics

@M.Jarocki Not sure, maybe both?
Does it make sense in context to have a fake package in computing?

@JasperLoy I'm sort of literate, you know, not as if it were a first time

@JasperLoy Only if they aren't active in other rooms either...

5:25 PM
@JasperLoy We've got a chat room on fr.stackexchange (not sure how we're calling it these dayss what with they're changing names. If you care to visit.... but it's usually empty, chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/1098/chez-cosette
Maybe we'd prefer berets to hats, we'll tell them for next year's winterrbash

@Laure Thank you, but I don't know anyone there. =)

@Laure Tricorns!

@Cerberus Why not..
@Ste yes, hatolics !
@Cerberus so you're not hunting for hats.
@Cerberus On fr. we're quite serious usually. Work. But we're not in a festive mood at the moment.
Anyway i was told to come here to get a cat hat, they do look great!

@Laure Oh...did anything happen?

Ste
We are very pro-hatting here. Which hats do you need?

5:31 PM
@Cerberus not yet
@Ste i want a cat hat
2

Oh...

Ste
I have given you your cat hat now. :)

Julien CuminTolkien wrote a poem called “Over the misty mountains cold”, which is featured as a song in the first Hobbit movie. Ste
@Laure You haven't put on your cat hat yet!

@tchrist Haven't got one

5:42 PM
@Laure Haven’t got one what, a licence?

@Cerberus Maybe a funny generic name for packages, but I really don't know.

Oh, yes i do now, just seen it.

@M.Jarocki But "gag" indicates that it has to be a joke package.

Hat ahoy!

Ste
@Artemix - Are you on a hat-hunt? We here at EL&U are very generous with out head-attire!
2

5:56 PM
@Ste I liked the word "head-attire"!
2

Ste
Two hats for the price of one. Get "Oh the Horror" and "Marauder" here! Star this message so everybody knows!
@TimTimmy - Do you need hats? We can help!

@Ste Yes please! :)
2

@Cerberus OK, this will do. Thanks!

@Ste Gracias
Did I spell that correctly?

Ste
@TimTimmy - Stand by - you are about to receive your Chatty Cat hat!
You did but that's Spanish not English! :o)

6:00 PM
@Ste no hats yet :( ....

Ste
@TimTimmy - The hat job runs every 5 mins or so, I think. You will be awarded it shortly.

@ste are you a hat salesman :-)

Ste
@TimTimmy Have you voted on anything on this site yet? You may need to do that before the hat comes through.

@Ste Thanks loads, I'm still waiting...

Ste
@badass - I ain't selling, I'm giving!

6:07 PM
@Ste Umm... No
@badass There you are

:D

Ste
@TimTimmy - Go to this question and upvote it: english.stackexchange.com/questions/142855/…

@Ste I have only got 1 reputation on this site so I can't upvote yet :(
Uhh... Complicated English :(

@Cerberus Hmmm Hmmm!

Ste
@TimTimmy Go here and add an answer :meta.english.stackexchange.com/questions/4356/… I will up vote it and you will soon have voting ability.

6:11 PM
@Ste You must have at least 5 reputation on English Language & Usage Stack Exchange to answer a question. :(

@TimTimmy ?? That makes no sense. How do you get point then?

@Mitch You must have at least 5 reputation on English Language & Usage Stack Exchange to ask a question.

Ste
Ahh - you'll need to ask or answer on the main site first.
@Mitch I pointed Tim to meta.

Oh...

@TimTimmy Is it ask or is it answer?

6:12 PM
@Mitch Both :)

Then do it! (easier to answer)
Just get one up vote and you're set.
well, you'll want a little more to be able to comment.
So you're just a chat lurker?

@Mitch Kind of... I go on the other exchange sites.

Ste
If you're on the other exchange sites how come you haven't got 101 rep here?

Devgeet PatelFrom Earth, we can distinguish the type of another galaxy very easily simply by observing the shape, colour, and structure of the galaxy when we image it. @Ste you need 200 reps in one account to get the association bonus

6:17 PM
Who knew? Well, that guy did.

Ste
It turns out that I know very little!

@MattЭллен Quit trying to bring facts into the argument. Wait, this isn't an argument, is it?

@Mitch I'm not arguing with you!

Ste
I need to search other chat rooms to find out how to get Eureka
Surely someone has spilled the beans on another site..

@MattЭллен You should be.

6:19 PM
@Mitch I don't think so. Why would I want to do that?
@Ste good idea. I hope someone has

Keeps your mind sharp. Staves off Alzheimer's. Makes you better at crossword puzzles. Things like that. And maybe some other things too.

@Mitch arguing with you has not made me better at crossword puzzles. I'm just as bad as I ever was.

Ste
@MattЭллен Okay I'm off to some other chat rooms. Can I get an upvote on this please: I'm going for "Before it was Cool" hat: english.stackexchange.com/questions/142855/…

good luck

Ste
I just tried sports but they were talking about actual hats...

6:25 PM
@Ste Thanks a lot!! It worked :)

Ste
@TimTimmy no problems!

@MattЭллен Prove it. I don't think you've tried a crossword puzzle since we started arguing.

@Mitch I just looked at this one and I can do one clue. This is one fewer than normal.
I think you're making things worse!

Ste
I've just done the rounds around the other chat rooms and it seems people are tight-lipped about the secret hats. I need a mod to approve my tag wiki edit to see if that triggers the "Before it was Cool" hat.

Ste
7:13 PM
Nope - that didn't do it either... Aargh!
Where is @RegDwigнt? I need my "Before it was cool" hat!

Ste
7:31 PM
Let's get EL&U more Hi ho Silver hats

@reg I didn't know the pointy haired boss was real.

7:42 PM
Yo

@MετάEd well. Thanks to me you know now! thanks self
@Ste where do I come in in that endeavour?
@MattЭллен something something measurement rum.

close enough

That should keep y'all occupied for another hour.

8:38 PM
Hi, question: how would you say more correctly?
a disguised phone: something looking like a phone, in order to trap people
the term disguised seems not appropriate (for a person rather)
lure is close, but it's for hunting.. different context

lure isn't exclusive to hunting, that's just where it origninates

9:01 PM
so you could say of someone throwing a tennis ball, that he is throwing a grenade lure?
(when it's actually a grenade camoufled in tennis ball)

no
!!define lure

@MattЭллен lure Something that tempts or attracts, especially one with a promise of reward or pleasure.

@ctrl maybe
if people find tennis balls alluring
I would say if you made it look like it was made of gold
maybe
perhaps I have expensive taste :D
lure is also (and I would say more often) a verb
@ctrl you could call it a trick phone.
if the phone does something bad when they use it, call it "a booby-trapped phone"

^ better example, how would you call that phones?

that's a "trick phone" or "pretend phone" or "cookie phone"
(the last one is specific to that example)

9:15 PM
ok, when there is no harm, or danger

I suppose you could also call it a "trick cookie" because it's a cookie that tricks you into thinking it's a phone
@ctrl yes

@Ste sorry, but no: there are no hats on meta, so you can't get Marauder that way
You could do this on Meta Stack Overflow

@Gilles "oh the horror", though, can only be got that way

@MattЭллен yes, but you get it on the main site, for something that happens on meta

@Mitch What is right? What is wrong? Is the universe morally opposed to crosswords?

@RegDwigнt done
now prepare to be suspended and have all your hats removed
@ColeJohnson you could, but then we would suspend you and take away all of your hats. (You're probably joking, but if we catch anyone gaming the system just to earn a hat, that's what will happen.) — Laura 22 hours ago

That means you can award some warm hats retroactively.

Everyone's hats will get removed! Very soon!
