@tchrist This is why it makes sense to use zero-based arrays.
for (i=0; i<len; i++) {
  // statements
}

Only way I ever do it.

Q: A word/expression for "Making a problem simpler by sharing it with a group of people".

S AdamOne strategy to solve some problem or make it simpler, is to share it with someone who has a lot of knowledge about the subject. We use the idiom "Pick sb's brains" to express this way of breaking up the problem or this strategy. Another strategy is to share the problem with a group of people or...

@tchrist Nice.
I don't think we ever really read Vitruvius (why not Vitruvy anyway?) except for some short passages.
for (i=1; i=<len; i++) {
// statements
}

@Cerberus No idea. The anglicizations are inconsistent.
@Cerberus There are safer ways to do this, like some sort of range(len) primitive.

@tchrist Quite.
@tchrist I don't know what that is. That was just an example of how 1-indexing could be easy enough.

The whole 0-base vs 1-based thing is a royal pain.
@Cerberus I think it's something python may do. None of the languages I use do; they all do the other way.

@tchrist Imperial, one might even say.
@tchrist Autohotkey uses 1.

This becomes trickier when you want to go through just the evens or the odds, for example. Yes, the third part can be i += 2 and such, but still.
For the most part, "user" oriented systems use 1-based on "programmer" oriented systems use 0-based. I know many examples of that split.

Probably.
But I'm glad I can program with 1 in Autohotkey.

2:13 AM
Shell scripts, awk scripts, SQL scripts: all use 1.
Then again, so does FORTRAN.
C and its scions all use 0.
And trust me, it has a lot of kids.

Each even less pronounceable than the previous.
See hash? See sharp?

That's only because everybody knows how to pronounce C. :)

C as in SQL?

No.
C as in the programming language.

I thought it was pronounced sequel.

2:16 AM
I mean that all its children are zero-based.

I know.
I understood all of that.
Hence my reference to C#.

I don't get the comment then.
Oh what the hell is that thing.
Yeah.
See pound.
Maybe a sea pound for sea lions.

Who knows.
Sea cyans.

I didn't even think of that one because it's from the evil empire.
My brain can't go there.
So it doesn't lodge such bits readily.

I wouldn't know.

2:19 AM
Oh I know one that's easy to pronounce: Go.

Yes.
Too bad it's already a game.
Autohotkey is stuck with its old, silly name.
Often abbreviated as AHK, but I hate unnecessary abbreviations.

A: How to read a user input using Read...Data statement in BASIC language?

Jerry StrattonUnfortunately, once you get sucked into a computer program, it’s difficult if not impossible for someone outside the program to help you escape. You’re probably going to have to overcome several trials to find the means of exiting the program. Pay special attention to I/O devices: one of them is ...

Anoop MysoreLooking for a (preferably single) word/simple phrase to refer to "the quality of a person to know that he is probably wrong about something and is also willing to accept he is wrong about it, but just has not got a chance to do it yet"

Q: What is a word for a restriction imposed by a person's religion?

John JoeLike for instance different religions say that their members can't partake in eating certain kinds of food like shellfish, pork or beef. But, what is a name for something someone can't do due to their religious beliefs? Also, just as a side question because there is a time-wasting 40-minute pos...

Q: A proper universal name for any city or town, regardless of its size

MaxTI'm facing a pressing issue with choosing a proper way to call a place (city, town), regardless of its size. 1) Has to describe places of any size (from pop. 5 to 5 mil.) 2) Must describe any location that is inhabited and/or has any administrative boundaries 3) Should be easy-to-understand b...

Q: Word for nouns with multiple plural forms

JJJSome nouns have multiple plurals, this article from Merriam Webster names a few. I'm wondering if there is a word to describe this, a word meaning having multiple plural forms. To put it in a sentence (two sentences to allow noun and adjective answers): Syllabus is a(n) (insert word), because i...

@NVZ I love that movie.
Emily Blunt and ... that guy... from Mission Impossible... is he... Mormon?

@Mitch Tom Cruise is a Scientologist isn't he?

Argh! Yes! That's it! Of course he is!
But you followed that without suggesting that I should really have been thinking of that actress that... was in that movie... about pizza? or was it with that guy... who was maybe ... Buddhist... and something about... a hamster?

4:48 PM
@Mitch Argh! The two aren't even comparable. Scientologists think a superbeing from the planet Xenu is responsible for our current situation. Mormons say it's a superbeing from Kolob, a completely different planet!

What would you call the family members (and close friends) of a recently deceased person? There's mourner but that could be anyone attending the funeral.
The grieved?

5:44 PM
@MetaEd Temujin's Wind Horse will allow either of those. But the Rapture? That's just weird.
@Færd The bereaved?
The family members and close friends of the deceased?

6:32 PM
@Mitch Yes, that's it. Thanks.
