Can anyone think of an adjective form of "diary" and "report" without some awkward hyphen with "al" happening ?
Diarial struck me and Merriam-Webster says it's okay but it still seems a bit weird

2:12 AM
@HsMjstyMstdn "diarial" seems like it would be the correct form, if you want to make an adjective ending in "al" out of "diary". Compare "secretary" and "secretarial". But I think in most cases, using "diary" as an attributive noun would sound better.
@HsMjstyMstdn No adjective like that derived from "report" seems to exist.
Well, actually, I guess "reportive" and "reportative" seem to be used as jargon, but I doubt either of these would be the right choice for you.

How is English a modern language when it doesn't even have its own word for a crossaint?! #nílsécgl
I'm not anti-English, but if it can't can't survive without government subsidies for films, and the arts through English, and BILLIONS wasted employing English teachers and civil servants producing pointless documents in English, then maybe it should be allowed to die. #NílSéCGL
"John Smith, teacher, father of four and English language enthusiast was laid to rest today." #nílsécgl

@Mitch If it ain't a cross...
Then it must be a crescent.

You and your viennoiseries

What's it called when the cigarette gets to you and you feel dizzy and start to enjoying it?

Insanity?

Well.

3:23 AM
I can't say: it nauseates me and distresses me too much.
Wait, do you mean a cannabis cigarette? :)

Any type of thing that gets to your brain fairly abruptly and gives you that kind of pleasure.
I haven't tried cannabis yet, so I don't know.
Oh, wait.

Smoke hits you faster than most anything. You can knock back a really black demitasse of tight espresso, and it still takes time.

I've tried hashish.

Right, that's the same.

It wasn't really enjoyable.

3:26 AM
I'm not especially surprised.
It's not a euphoric. Usually. I gather. I'm not much of an expert.

Maybe I had to do it several time intermittently to adopt my brain.
But didn't really care for it.

Smoking is terrible for you

Perhaps. It's not something I would recommend, but I'm not going to make other people's choices for them.

Is there a drink that can be made from cannabis, like tea or coffee?

Sure.
Well, I bet.

3:27 AM
I've quit smoking cigars and cigarettes for two or three years now.

Most of the so-called edibles are heavier substances.

Lost count of the years so soon.
@Mitch Drinking could be much worse bro.
Oh, I didn't finish reading your sentence.
I meant alcohol.

I come from a world where smoke is super-gross, something that for ages was forced upon you against your will.
I don't think I'll ever get over that experience.

Hmm. I hear it was customary to smoke everywhere in the US.
From restaurants to restrooms.

Yes, exactly. And the workplace. Everywhere. There was no escape.

3:30 AM
It's quite an achievement that nowadays most of your cigarette production is exported to other countries!

It's hard not to consider that an evil.
My drug of choice is caffeine. I may never quit, at least willingly, although I'm getting to the age where I probably need to.

Quit? Age is a problem with caffeine?

Messes up with your sleep cycle.

Yes, sleep is ever harder. It also isn't good for your blood pressure if you do too much of it.

Oh
takes notes

3:35 AM
And it makes you too aggressive in the morning.

Oh. Didn't know that.

And makes you pee more

Anything over about 250 mg of caffeine introduces personality changes.

A double espresso could agitate me.

Yeah.

3:37 AM
So how many hours of sleep do you get daily?

I use to start every day with two doubles.

From INTJ to ESFP

@tchrist That's a lot.

I haven't been speaking from theory here as I've been recounting the perils of overdoing caffeine.

Cannabicoffee

3:39 AM
I haven't done that, but I imagine it's possible. I've never been in any of the cannabis stores, even as a tourist.

I'm not goingto brag about how many hours a day I spent smoking, because I quit before getting to the perilous part.
Or so I think.

I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast
But I like hot butter on my breakfast toast

And once I got in bed with a ghost
(Now try to top that)

That's the worst

3:42 AM
Topping a ghost in bed?
With what, caramel?

Haha
It would be funnier if you were talking about the position.

I wasn't? :)

Well, so I have to figure what I have to do with caramel!
Oh.
:)

Can I call this "A new drawing by my sister", or do we use a different word for such pictures?

6:58 AM
Guys, I don't understand the concept of this sentence:
> The third number specifies permissions for the owner's user group
Who is "owner's user group" ?
All users of a group which is including the owner?

5 hours later…
11:46 AM
A new bill will be introduced today in the Russian parliament according to which all persons with social network accounts will have to register there using their passports.
@Shafizadeh Permissions for the group. The group might belong to the owner, or the owner might be one of the members of the group.

Q: Which word to use: Arranging a meeting "between" dates

Jimmy ManselI want to ask someone if we could arrange a meeting during some time span between two dates, but I'm not sure if "between" is the correct word to use in the context of time, not space. Example phrase: "Can we arrange a meeting between Monday and Thursday?"

Does "Valid Until 2018-04" mean either it is valid until the beginning of fourth moth or the end of it?
@CowperKettle thx

Q: Word meaning inferior version

elszeusI'm trying to remember the word meaning an inferior version of something more attractive. I believe it begins with A. Any ideas?

2:05 PM
@CowperKettle That's a painting. If you use a brush it's a painting. If you use a pencil it's a drawing. If you use a computer (or anything at all) it's a picture. 'She made this picture (or piece of art)'

@sumelic Hmm... I see. Thank you

2:21 PM
@Mitch thank you!

Q: I am looking for a word or words for someone who give praise or credit to other too readily

MohI am looking for a word or words to describe someone who does not give praise or credit to others too readily. I was sitting in the library, studying math as usual. Miruka came and sat right next to me, a citrus-scented breeze announcing her presence.
I have two questions : 1- what the function of right he can say sat nest to me, Am I wrong 2- he says studying like usual. since it's habitual action why he used present continuous instead of simple present
Please someone explain to me ?
Is the usage of "right" means close to me ( distance )
I think I didn't notice that styding not used in present continuous but in past continuous since the sentence started with Was

Q: I thought “jalopitated” was a word?

johnny 5I remember a word which means to have two things unlevel or off-kilter. I could have sworn the word was jalopitated. I’m aware of the word jalopy, but this does not satify the requirements of being unlevel. Does anyone know what word I am thinking of?

Q: Adjective to describe something that is not rushed

Arash HowaidaI was having trouble thinking of the right word to use to describe a process that is not rushed. I suppose I could say not rushed, but I think there should be a single word for it. Q: One word for 'a small town'

chocojunkieWhat words/phrases have you heard growing up that mean a small or remote town? I'm an ESL student, so I haven't heard much. I've only seen the word 'whistle-stop' in a dictionary once, where it was marked as North American. Is there a British/Canadian/Australian etc. analogy for this?

> Recombinant humanized anti-interleukin-6 therapeutic monoclonal antibodies
I'm not sure if my word order is correct here...
> Recombinant therapeutic humanized anti-interleukin-6 monoclonal antibodies obtained using genetic engineering methods bind the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 with high affinity.
I shuffle the adjectives this way and that and it all seems okay

6:32 PM
@CowperKettle Trying to make sense of humanized antibodies. Is that like antihuman bodies? Anyway, it's nice they're humanized.

Is it correct to say : "im not going to answer you if you dont accept critics dont post from the very begining "
from the very begining

@Educ I don't think it works there.

So what do you suggests ?

Hmm.
> If you don't accept criticism, don't post at all.
> If you don't accept criticism, you shouldn't post at all.
> If you don't accept criticism, you shouldn't post in the first place.

yes ( in the first place )

I like the first two ones better.

thumbs up
Thank you
Could you please check the followings statements :

@Færd What the heck is it with all of you people skipping the word then in these conditional constructions? XP
More seriously though, I've been noticing this quite a bit on the main website too.

If X Then Y (implication ) in logic
@Tonepoet consequence
A Implies B
If A then B
Not all the people, here is an conter-example: yesterday tchrist
yst 5:20 PM
If I said "I have never saw" then I should have edited it. :)
you notice that tchrist used then after if clause

8:34 PM
I understand the construction @educ and it's used in normal prose too, but I'm wondering what manner of ellipsis is happening. Also, it's probably worth noting that while that is a valid counterexample, tchrist also employs it here.

9:05 PM
@Educ 1- Kind of. Right in "right here/there/next to me/..." could imply that the exact position is meant, so here it could denote close proximity.
2- And the past continuous is used because the particular session which was interrupted by Mirkau's entrance is meant.
@Tonepoet I think the comma will suffice. :)

Did you watch the game(s)?

@skullpatrol Yes. You?

Yup.

Thought the Jags were going to pull it off, didja?

::yawn:: looks like another sb season for Brady

Could be.
It can't be stated enough, though, that the coaching is absolutely the G.O.A.T.

10:37 PM
he'll get the job done, but will he cover the 6 points???

@skullpatrol It'll be 8.5 by game time, you watch.

Eagles =/= Giants
;-)

We'll see.

Yeah, two weeks of hype is a lot.

You just kinda wish they were going to play next week to get the hypefest over with.

10:47 PM
That, and the momentum factor.

The real test will come next year when the Pats have to replace McDaniels and Patricia.
OC/DC at New England is worth a head coaching job anywhere else.

Yup, they are valuable.

11:10 PM
@skullpatrol But the defense strategy is where they'll shave off points. It's pretty crazy

Yeah, shaving is a messy business.

haha

Don't forget the refs

OMG
THey're obviously bought

Three of them went to prison in the nba.

11:14 PM
that's messed up

After confessing.

It's not like they just decided one day that they felt a little funny about it all and decided to tell.
But back to the actual game...

Yup.

People tend to forget this, but the real strategy, the meat of the whole thing, which of course has all its nuances, is to get more points than the other team.

The offence gets you to the championship game, yes.
But, defence wins championships.
So, "get more points than the other team, " has the flip side of stop the other team from scoring more points than you.

11:39 PM
That's sublime
