in Mathematics, 13 secs ago, by I'm mostly just an idiot
From memory I have proven that $E$ being a finite dimensional subspace of a normed space, means that it is complete.
Should it be 'proven' or 'proved' above?

Anybody seen any ELU mods lately?

@tchrist Just Kit.

Ok thanks. I've pinged one of them.

How would one say, I have some of your alarm clocks to a company? "I have some copies of your clocks"? That doesn't sound quite right.

[ SmokeDetector ] Bad keyword in title: Name for action of pulling hair back using scalp muscles by Daniel Griscom on english.stackexchange.com

1:20 PM
@SmokeDetector what?
have you balcklisted scalp?
@FaheemMitha if they manufacture them, just say "I have some of your alarm clocks"

@MattE.Эллен Ok. I eventually wrote: "I own several Opal Big Digit Alarm Clocks."

@FaheemMitha that's fine, too

I suppose "possess" would also work, but is more awkward.

yeah. own is more normal

@MattE.Эллен Yes, that's what I thought. Thank you for the feedback.

1:31 PM
@MattE.Эллен Muscles, I think.
In the Tavern or Charcoal HQ, you can ask Smokey "why" and he'll tell you.

@tchrist ah! that makes sense. I remember the body building stuff now
@tchrist you are correct. thanks for the tip on charcoal

Charcoal is a sane place. Not like Tavern.

Q: What is the difference between "proven" and "proved"?

vonjdMy question concerns when to use which of the above.

@Mitch It makes me feel like I am increasing chat room activity by leaving real life baits :D.

@MattE.Эллен So rude.

A: What is the difference between "proven" and "proved"?

Sven YargsThe biggest difference between the two forms—and one so obvious that neither of the earlier two answers points it out—is that proved is used in the simple past tense, whereas proven is not: Euclid proved [not proven] the proposition with remarkable economy and rigor. Another big difference ...

Very in depth answer.
I can't comment or upvote though.

It doesn't really discuss the usage in the math community where it is a very common concept.
Also, in a very special vocabulary, it is used in baking.
to prove means to let some raw dough item rest for a bit before cooking (or something like that). And I can't remember if they say 'proved' or 'proven'

@Mitch Oh, that's interesting, I have never heard of that.
"(of bread dough) become aerated by the action of yeast; rise."
(prove)
Proofing (also called proving or more rarely blooming), as the term is used by bakers, is the final rise of shaped bread dough before baking. It refers to a specific rest period within the more generalized process known as fermentation. Fermentation is a step in creating yeast breads and baked goods where the yeast is allowed to leaven the dough. Fermentation rest periods are not always explicitly named, and can appear in recipes as "Allow dough to rise." When they are named, terms include "bulk fermentation," "first rise," "second rise," "final proof" and "shaped proof". Proofing yeast (as opposed...

right. 'proofing'. what a weird way to say it.

@Mitch I love this.

Oh. I see. Yes. you did.

Hi @DeltaEscher.

Hi there
dleta can into english

user174558
Now that I know your name, you are officially my friend.

user174558
I don't like talking to people whose real names I don't even know, in general.

user174558
It's almost 1 AM.

Only 11:00ish here.
Time zones are butts like that

4:56 PM
Home time here. Bye!

user174558
Bye.

I want a job .-.
but who would give a job to someone who's 14?
bleh

user174558
Looking back I think I wasted a lot of time in school learning useless things. Education is overrated.

That's why more schools should be charter

user174558
I think people should start working at 13.

4:58 PM
Same

user174558
And get married at 16.

The age of marriage should be the age of consent
Which should NOT be at 16

user174558
What should it be?

17
When people reach maturity
Not mentally, as that varies.

user174558
Have you finally watched A Beautiful Mind?

5:01 PM
For the life of me I can't remember to do that

user174558
You have a long life, take your time.

I'll make a jpeg of the words 'Watch a Beautiful Mind' my iPod lock screen
Memory ain't a feature I'm quite proud of.

user174558
I don't use any iProducts.

As a stereotypical 13 year old I asked for one for my birthday
I had to pay half of it and give up a party, but totally worth it.

user174558
i,j,k are the unit vectors in the x,y,z directions.

5:03 PM
wut

user174558
Complex numbers are in the form x+yi for real values of x,y.

I'm only in Pre-Calc
is confus

user174558
Of course, the two i's up there are different.

For some reason a plot generator I used once used 'laser' as a sample adjective
I made it my job to use laser as a joke adjective now.

user174558
With LaTeX you can plot things too.

5:05 PM
Cool
It's too complex when I could just draw out a calculation though
I find drawing more fun than writing
Writing is so uniform and jagged
Drawing is smooth and curved

user174558
I am bad at drawing in general. I like singing.

I'm bad at drawing too
It's fun anyways
I just draw incredibly horribly and call it abstract

user174558
I like the orange colour.

Teal for life

user174558
Your picture reminds me of Charlie Brown.

That picture sold for $44 million
I just slapdashed a thing up in Google Chat Draw

user174558
@Mitch Is that your website?

Took me about 10 seconds

Pfft, no

user174558
@DeltaEscher Wow, sick.

5:09 PM
@DeltaEscher I will buy it from you if you give me $44 million

Maybe mine will sell for $44 million
@Mitch lolnope too low
Bidding starts at $44 billion

user174558
I would pay 44 cents for that.

@DeltaEscher Oh. OK. Give e $44 billion and I'll buy it from you for that.

Nice!

5:10 PM
there

Check is in the mail.
Wait for it.

umg I just earned a profit of -$44 billion

it'll even out
eventually

Tanya: Oh no you don’t

@DeltaEscher Da da da dah, dat duh da dah, dat dat da da dat duh da dah.

what
I can't watch that, my school is a butt about streaming media

It allows you to sing a long

Did you read my beautiful novella?
I spent ten minutes on it ENGLISH SKILLS

@DeltaEscher shouldn't they also be a butt about using any kind of electronics in class at all?

@Mitch School issue computer
It's an internet oriented school
Streaming is obvious though, it eats up bandwidth

5:23 PM
Also macchiato will kill you

*The macchiato swears revenge upon the hipster cafe
*And the society which enslaved its being
*It attempts again to shake its fist towards the air
*Only making it lose more precious fluids

You had me at 'SpaceCafe'

My favorite line:
Tanya: Curses, I must find another source of coffee I hate but pretend to like because it’s cool.
That or:
Generic Hipster #2: umg is this organic arsenic
Tanya's last name is canonically Nottanya

Stay away from lemon verbena, it's toxic in not too large amounts.

umg flax sead 2
its almost liek everything can kil u

5:27 PM
sure.
if a pallet of it falls over on you.
wear a hard hat
there's rules you know

Apparently too much flax seed can kill you
joy
Using a plot generator because I'm too lazy to make my own story
Six adjectives (e.g. fast, dangerous, laser)
Because laser is now an adjective

@DeltaEscher Proof?

plot-generator.uk says so

I think not.

Therefore science
My favorite line from Curse of the Creamy Cream Puff:
"I hope Tanya and Cup of Yogurt get married"
Putting 'Cream Puff' as 'Something You Can be Addicted to" has beautiful results
Uh oh
Plot Generator has a Teen Vampire option

Q: Why does the "i" in naïve have "two dots"?

HappyI have observed that the word naïve is written with two dots on the i. Why is this? Is it correct to write the word with a single dot, as in naive? Are there any other English words with such two dots?

So where were we with the gloves v. mitts/mittens discussion?
I'm guessing mittens is some kind of diminutive form of mitts, but might it be a corruption of mitt-in, as in something you put in a mitt?

mittens are usually knitted

Interesting. I don't have that concept.

It's a natural belief of mine

Do you live in a cold place, where you wear mittens often in winter?

No
It's just logic to me
I don't wear mittens or gloves

7:14 PM
I'm wondering if it's a difference based on iconic representation versus practical experience.

I rarely get cold
I only wear gloves when I rake

Leather or canvas gloves?
Not knit ones?

Leather
My dad has a motorcycle, so I just use motorcycle gloves

@Jez seg fault
wow... 'mitaine' - 'halfway'?
like maybe its started out as a glove, then cut off the fingers, you know, halfway, then sew them back up again (Because you know it's all cold now with all those holes at the fingers)

@Mitch T’as seg fault?

It's always segway's fault
segway no

A: Is there a male counterpart to being a virgin?

Jasper LoyIn English, virgin can be used to refer to a person who has never had sex or a person who has no experience in a particular activity. This person may be male or female.

user174558
I am so proud of my answer.

No offense, but it's an obvious answer
Who would even post that question?

user174558
I got so many points from it.

9:13 PM
That's cheap

user174558
Most highly voted posts are cheap.

9:27 PM
@Mitch It's less fun if you just link it.

@KitZ.Fox I always expect it to one-box

I wonder if we should request that.

One can request?

Sure, why not?

what strange angel do we ask?
@JasperLoy "Is there a more specific counterpart to 'a' that refers to a specific item?"
goes to ask that

user174558
9:30 PM
@KitZ.Fox How was the training?

hopes people will upvote it to the multicollider

user174558
@Mitch Yes, the, LOL.

@JasperLoy Oh... you knew it! Nice! I was still googling for it.

@Mitch You could put it on our Meta or Meta.SE, tag it as a feature-request.
@JasperLoy Made me pretty punchy.

@KitZ.Fox are there any other suggestions?

9:32 PM
On that site? Or what to do?

user174558
Is it difficult to learn a third language using a second language as a base?

@JasperLoy Depends.
It is difficult to learn Japanese using Spanish as a base.
2

@JasperLoy yes, you need two bidirectional dictionaries, and all the errors in one set are compounded twice.
It is difficult to learn Italian using SPanish as a base because all the words are the same, except for other word, which looks the same but means something slightly different.

user174558
I see. There is a very good series of products for learning languages but most of them have French as a base, not English.

Oh. That might be different
how well do you know french?

user174558
9:35 PM
I don't at all, but may learn it.

user174558
Brown rice is nicer than white rice.

Well, if it explains the grammar of language X in French, that would be difficult
@JasperLoy I disagree entirely. Same with whole wheat vs white wheat.
Is it OK to mark as 'invalid' flags in a another room for posts that are OK in this room? (because they include profanity)

@Cerb do you know you have the most chat messages on SE?

I don't know, maybe everyone's grandmother is in the other room.
That would embarassing

user174558
@JohanLarsson Go to chat.stackexchange.com and go to the users tab.

user174558
9:39 PM
@Mitch Valid or invalid is all up to you. That is what voting is about.

user174558
@JohanLarsson Sorry, I read that with a how in front.

@JasperLoy Sorry, I read how that with a in front.

@JasperLoy I saw him linked in another room, #2 & # were fighting on who had the most posts. Then they linked cerb and he had more than them combined.

user174558
@JohanLarsson I might have more than him if I did not delete my accounts.

user174558
I have a terrible headache.

11:21 PM
@KitZ.Fox Yes, yes, yes! Pretty please!

11:53 PM
@KitZ.Fox I watched a better movie this time. Species 1 and 2.

user174558
It's a bit like Alien.

Good lord. I guess that's better than Wrong Turn, but not a lot.
I've seen Species.

user174558
The alien looks like you.

user174558
What was the training about?

Teamwork and communication.
Want to hear something funny?

user174558
11:55 PM
Yes.

There were a bunch of scores that were supposed to tell you what kind of teammate you are, and apparently I rate high as "moderator".
lol

user174558
Good, good.

user174558
I am sceptical about this kind of training. I don't think it really helps anyone.

I had a good time. I like pretty much everyone I work with, so it gives me an opportunity to share that with them constructively and to invite feedback about my own bad habits.

user174558
The best part of this kind of training for me is the teabreaks which is usually full of nice, free food.

11:59 PM
We had cuties, which are tiny oranges, and bagels and cranberry muffins.
And tea and coffee and water.
