@JohanLarsson I laughed.

:)
he is a genius right?

Yes, that was a superb effort of the intellect.

maybe not much effort but the result!

The italicised word asterisks in your question above is displayed correctly for me on XP Pro 32bits SP3, both in Chrome and in Firefox, both latest version (presumably). Never in my history on SE have I encountered this issue. My XP hasn't been updated in years, so a recent patch may theoretically have introduced the problem (unlikely...). — Cerberus 1 min ago
Seemed like a good opportunity to get in a reference to my unpatched XP system.

2:07 AM
Hi @medica

hi, skull! How are you?
fancy your avitar.
:)

:D fine thanks, how are you?

Good! Sometimes this place is crazy funny.
How is your team doing?

2-12

8-O

2:09 AM
:O

how many games left?

bummer. sorry.

np
one more win and I'll be happy

but team loyalty is fun! Really, where would football be without it?

2:10 AM
this is crunch time for the play-offs

Now you've got me curious. I might just watch one of their games.

:-)

Can they still make it?

nope

lol
then it isn't really crunch time???
lol

2:11 AM
I meant for the rest of the league

OK, now I've gotta watch their next game.
@skullpatrol That's how much I know about football.

never forget what the NYG did to the perfect season };-)

:-) Never!

that has never happened in any sport

Hey, in college I dated a guy (for 4.5 years altogether) who was a big college ball player.
He asked me to marry him.
I said no.
Now he's a billionaire.
:-O
oops! j/k
but I used to watch football with him (and watch him play football) all the time. I haven't much since.
:)

2:15 AM
I accidently came across your medical advice room

:)

nice

I'm soooo paranoid, right?
oh, thank you!
I feel really bad contradicting another doctor.
But I felt worse for Robusto.

there is a medical proposal at Area 54

So who are the Raiders playing tommorrow?

2:18 AM
chefs

Yeah, I have seen that.
They're cooking?

they are a bunch of cooks

Having a cookoff. Could they win that?
Or will their goose get cooked

we beat them last time

geese?

2:19 AM
them and the 49ers
whiners

Oh, that sounds good
lol

our last game this year is denver >8(

:(
no fun

tough schedule

If they win tomorrow, I'll feel like I have to watch every game
that might actually be fun.
Gotta eat now. :)
CU.

2:21 AM
the league head office never liked us since we were the only team to put a woman in our head office

>:(

CU pal, enjoy

>8((
ok, nite :)

2:42 AM
@medica And I appreciate the concern. I'd rather err on the side of safety. And nobody got their knickers in a twist at the practice. The nurse who was delegated to talk to me was very nice about it, and gave me the impression that she and the doctor both placed my concerns above any ego issues.
Now I hope I can get through the next nine days without side effects.

I got flagged again. This time in the moderator election room :(

what for?

my conversation wasn't purposeful enough for them

Then we should flag your ass every day in here.

I was talking to a candidate about the importance of "context"

2:50 AM
@JasperLoy Welcome back, Jasper. If you promise not to make a dramatic exit again, I'll start taking you seriously.

classic
:O I never knew this list was so long.
but it makes sense...

3:38 AM
@skullpatrol Should be longer. What about "Eve of Destruction" and "Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag" and "For What It's Worth" and, oh, I don't know, like about 5,000 more.

War! What is it good for? Is one of my favs.

I was just thinking of that too.

Good god, y'all.

Thanks for the memories of a great era in pop music.

5 hours later…
9:09 AM
I gave my best answer ever on SO but no rep :)

9:44 AM
Giving your best and getting the best are two completely different things.

10:02 AM
Sometimes, one gives the best but gets the worst from this sick world.
@skullpatrol Do the Christmas hats start tomorrow?

I read dec 15 somewhere. @JasperLoy
And this silly election business should be over on dec 23

@skullpatrol The math election?

Yep

It is Dec 2014. I think one could say that my mental illness started in Dec 1999, which is 15 years ago.

These kind of things are hard to time, my friend :)

10:12 AM
These few days I have been feeling very sad.
Sometimes, I think that I may never ever get well.

There are always going to be bad days and good days.

One thing I am sure of though is that I am done with all meds and therapy.

Ok, be very strong with that commitment.

I also believe in rebirth. In case I cannot find happiness in this life, I hope to find it in the next one.

Remember strength comes from inside of YOU!

10:17 AM
Do you have any hopes to fulfil for yourself this life?

Not in this life time pal

Are you in your final days and waiting for death?

No.

At least I am not in North Korea.

I'm not going down without a fight

10:20 AM
What if I were in North Korea? These thoughts are scary.

Don't think about it

It's actually similar to asking what if I were born a cockroach.

In a way, yes.

It is because of North Koreans and cockroaches that the Buddha came and preached a way.
As long as there is birth, there is suffering.

Have you finished the books yet?

10:24 AM
No.
Can you reveal what you are doing with your life at the moment?
I know you are very secretive.
Is your life as messed up as mine?
I see. I would like to give you some hope. You can find happiness in the next life too, if you believe in rebirth.
Good for you as well.
These few days I have been feeling a bit cold and also getting stomach cramps.

16 mins ago, by skullpatrol
Remember strength comes from inside of YOU!

It is from anxiety.
I am anxious about what is going to happen to me.

@JasperLoy you are putting too much pressure on yourself to succeed in the new year

I have a few wishes this life. I will try to make them happen, but if they don't happen, I simply cannot carry on living.

why?

10:37 AM
Have you watched The Hobbit 1 and 2? I just did. I am going to see 3 in the cinemas this month.

I don't watch movies my friend.

I need a miracle in my life.

If you believe

It seems that nobody else is talking.

it has been really quite in here lately :/

10:42 AM
By the way, I lost about 5 kg the last 2 months.
2

I am now 65 kg and 1.65 m.

so much?

It is 18 more days to the new year.

yep
see ya pal

1 hour later…
12:01 PM
Probably my fave in the genre.

@Robusto Can a room owner like you see removed messages like mods?

Yep.

It's Sunday. Not many people in this chat.

Yeah, and I'm going down to have breakfast, so it will be minus one for a time.

I just had dinner. I will take a nap.

12:33 PM
Evening!
Anyone here that is a native English speaker and knows how to work with Git/GitHub? I need someone to fix grammar on my website.

Jez
12:47 PM
yes, me

@Jez Cool! What's your GitHub account?

Jez
jez9999, but i tend to use bitbucket now

What does jez mean? Jesus? Yes? ??

Jez
short for Jeremy

never heard it, is it common?
Do you write any wpf?

12:53 PM
@Jez How much money/SE upvotes/octocat stickers would you like for correcting grammar from my website? :-)

Jez
probably not that common
@IonicăBizău the whole thing? i thought you meant 1 or 2 fixes

Umm.. Yes.
There are 3 pages and 16 articles.

Jez
1:14 PM
how do i correct stuff?

@Jez Fork the project and edit the files.

Jez
i dont quite understand what you mean by "Later, I will discover programming languages that I will really like!"
do you mean you will in future, or do you mean you did discover them?

I did discover them.
BTW, thanks a lot!

Jez
1:37 PM
i don't understand "default profile you want to open is yours"

If you don't type anything and just press Enter, your profile will be displayed.

1:55 PM
@Jez What's the correct form: It only uses JavaScript or It uses only JavaScript?
In Romanian we say it does only that. But in English I guess the things are a little bit different.

Jez
It only uses JavaScript
although you could get away with the other form
also, I'd say "it just uses..." - "only" conveys a slight sense of "merely"

I see..
@Jez I left two comments on two commits.

Jez
hmm
github's interface is annoying. when i edit that patch branch, it doesn't update the pull request

It should

I does update the pull request.

Jez
2:05 PM
oh yeah. but not the comments page

Ah, yes.

Jez
hmm. minimalist vs minimalistic
for some reason minimalistic sounds better to my ear

BitBucket works differently in this direction, right? I didn't like that feature. :-)
zeptojs.com <- Zepto is a minimalist JavaScript library for modern browser...

Jez
yeah ok minimalist is fine

@Jez What about working in technical support vs working on technical support?

Jez
2:11 PM
nah i wouldn't say "working on"
you work on something, you work in a department
or "work for"

2:27 PM
¿¿¿WHERE ARE OUR HATS??? It is now Monday, 15 December 2014 in Oz and for Kiwis too.

Stack Exchange works on UTC.

Jez
hats?

@AndrewLeach I always thought its "day" was 50 hours long. :)
I recall how you could get the "posts on Christmas" hat so long as it were Christmas somewhere in the world.

I think they stretched that particular day.

It makes sense though that it should start at 00:00:00 UTC.

2:30 PM
The Winterbash countdown is currently at 34300. Not sure why. Why not count down to the start time?

Jez
how many of you would say "weltanschauung" was an English word?

14
Q: Hats are coming

Matt ЭлленWinterbash 2014 is on its way. It will run from 15 December 2014 to 4 January 2015. (The site isn't live yet.) For those are unfamiliar with the Winterbash hat dash, it is a time of festive fun and hats. Each person can earn hats. The criteria for each hat is available at the above site, althou...

34300 seconds is like 9 and a half hours.

@Jez I would say that's German. And it should probably have a capital letter.

It is now about 14:30 UTC.
14:30 + 9:30 == 00:00.

2:32 PM
Aha. Mental arithmetic was never my strong point.

Well, it’s clock arithmetic, so it’s “special”.

@Jez I guess there are two articles left. What should I give you? :-)

Jez
two left?
i did all of them

@Jez 10.md and index.json containing the titles. Thanks a lot!

Jez
10.md is fine

2:37 PM
@tchrist I have the countdown page in two separate tabs in Firefox. They show different numbers.
3

@Jez Cool!

@skullpatrol His name is spelled queerly: it should rightly be Mariano Suárez-Álvarez. If he is going to write the accent on Suárez, then he should write the one that happens on Álvarez too, because you can’t say alvaREZ stressed at the end. It has to be ALvarez with the stress at the beginning. The -ez is like English -son, and it never receives stress. People who don’t bother with formally required accent marks on capital letters are making a common error unsanctioned by the Academy.
@AndrewLeach How can this be?

No idea. The two tabs are five seconds apart.

Jez
i dunno why Github seems to flag text in JS surrounded by single quotes as an error - looks fine to me

@Jez Use: "foo": "something \"with quotes\"". It's because JSON format. It doesn't allow simple quotes for field values.

Jez
2:43 PM
surely JSON is just like JavaScript
it doesnt like single quotes?

No, it's not.

Jez
why on earth not?

Valid js: {foo: 1}, valid JSON: {"foo": 1} (that is also valid js).
But first is not valid JSON.
Talk to you later. I have to leave. Thanks for improvements!

@Andrew, I need to ping you from the bunker. Just a sec.

what is the bunker?

2:48 PM
@Andrew I can’t find the unfreeze control, which is allegedly available to me. Sorry.

3:12 PM
After a week in the 50s and even mid 60s, today we’re to get a dusting of snow, probably only 2–4 inches, but still, enough to remind you that Winter Is Coming. It’s as though the very heavens were playing herald to today’s ribbon-cutting at the start of the Winterbash Iditarod.
What are the most common given names in English of at least two syllables that end in a consonant + the letter "Y"?

I am very sad these few days. I have the feeling I may never be well.

Jasper, you are not taking care of yourself.

I think it helps to come to this chat and talk.

Alone, you will stare too deeply into the abyss.
You need others to bounce your mind off of.

Yes, just don't suggest meds or therapy because I have tried those and I can always return to them if I choose to.

3:22 PM
So, you choose sadness?

But did you try biking + healthy food & sleep?

@JohanLarsson I did not try biking, but my food and sleep are alright.
My sadness is of another kind these days.
I have been thinking that maybe I cannot do the things I want to in future, because of my background.

What are the things and what is the background?

I am afraid that grad schools may not accept me because of my mental illness, for one.
And even if I do get into a decent school, math departments may not hire me after that.
Academia is very competitive, I think.
I don't think I will be happy doing an office job and staying in my country for the rest of this life.
I am going to make some coffee.
There was no hot water, so I used cold water.

Jez
3:53 PM
for coffee??

Yes. It seems nobody has anything encouraging to say to me in this chat.
6

4:04 PM
I do.
Believe in yourself.
Remember I told you @JasperLoy "I will make you a believer" :-)

@skullpatrol Thank you, we will meet in our future lives.

I hope so, my friend :'-)

I am going to eat something.

@terdon @Cerberus What’s the best way to verb something “à la grecque” in English, and why: to Greece it, to Greek it, to Graecize it, to Grecize it, to Greekize it, to Grecian it, to Graecomorph it, to Hellenize it, to Hellenicize it, to Atticize it, to Spartanize it, to Olympianize it, or to Byzantinize it? Should those be in lowercase instead? Is there any justifiable tolerance for the -ise forms?

Sudden heavy snow.

@tchrist as in you blink and there's the snow?

Yes.

@tchrist I can really greek that.

4:21 PM
@tchrist should I ask him about the missing accent?

@skullpatrol Only if you want to get flagged again.

:D
Top of the world Ma!

5:07 PM
@Jez I gave you a bunch of upvotes. :-) Thanks a lot again!

Hi everyone

I am trying to describe a scientific field that is becoming more and more popular among researchers and will reach the peak of its popularity and number of publications in the coming years. Is the following correct? :
This field is expected to """reach its peak of interest""" among researchers in the future.
If not, any alternatives?
@JohanLarsson
It is really really necessary!

11:46 PM
I don't know English.
